For a good while now, I've enjoyed switching the back and menu buttons so the back button is on the right side — seems more intuitive to me — when using the three button option.
Alternatively, if I use the swipe up feature instead, with the pill button...the back button stays on the right.
We've updated a Pixel 2 XL to Android 10 and Custom Navigation Bar app doesn't work.
I also tried running an ADB shell command:
Code:
settings put secure sysui_nav_bar "space,recent;home;back,space"
but that didn't help either on the 2 XL.
My 3 XL hasn't received the OTA update to Android 10 yet. I was hoping someone might have figured a way to swap the navigation buttons as I'm apprehensive about updating until I can achieve the swap.
Ideas/suggestions anyone...?
Thanks.

Depending upon what all else you might be interested in modding, you can flash this to swap your back and recents. You must choose three button mode because in two button mode, only the home button will show. This is a module so you can always delete it or disable it in magisk manager.
Edit: Very simple mod. No need to even decompile or recompile SystemUIGoogle.apk. Just in zip it, remove res/layout back.xml and recent_apps.xml. swap the names and replace.
how about for a VZW variant. I'd love to move the back button to the right so i can use the phone easier with one hand

I tried this on my Essential PH1 and it didn't move the back to the right. Do I just use Magisk with that zip or do I have to change it? Any other way? I'm using 2 button navigation.

Op I'm in the same boat as you. I updated my 3 XL to android 10 and the first thing I tried to do was swap the back button to the right side. Sadly I couldn't make any method work as well. Hopefully someone will figure something out.
And here I am trying to figure out how I can use gestures with 3rd party launcher..
Even when I use fluid navigation or vivid navigation the recents no longer work

Fluid works great. That's what I use. You have to enable 3 button navigation.
Looks like we are a bunch of people with similar issue: we love to move the back key to the right, or give us full functional gesture navigation (which we could back from right edge of screen) with 3rd party launcher....
Hope someone come up something soon....
Tried make Nova launcher as a system app but this doesn't bring out recent gesture...

The only thing missing is "clear all" which is nobiggie

You must be rooted with Magisk. Once you are and if you are on stock 10, all you do is open Magisk manager, in the menu, click modules, click the "plus" button, find my mod that you should have put on your phones internal sdcard, flash it, and reboot.

So I am a LONG time Samsung user. I've had every generation of the Note's and recently moved to the Pixel XL after returning my Note 7.
The phone is great and silky smooth so far but my biggest gripe and I know this is something I could become accustomed too if I had too but I was hoping that maybe there was an easy way to swap the placement of the two buttons.
On Samsung's the back button is on the right and the recent apps button on the left. Almost all other Androids are swapped (The Pixel is no different obviously) but trying to re-wire 6 plus years of back button pressing is going to be a lot of work and I have my fingers crossed there is a way to to do this easily within settings somewhere that I have missed.
The buttons themselves are merely icons on the screen, so swapping their positions doesn't seem unreasonable, I know you can do it with a rooted phone but I obviously don't care to void my day old phone's warranty quite yet. I'd understand if they were illuminated buttons on the bezel like the Samsung phones, but these are icons.
Anyone figure this out?
Thanks in advance!
Have you tried the app All in One Gestures? I don't have my Pixel XL yet, but I use the All in One Gestures app to swap the back and recent buttons on my Galaxy S6.
First off, unlocking the bootloader and modifying does not void the warranty on Google phones. There are no software methods included to swap the navbar icons. Only way remaining is to unlock the bootloader and look for a way to mod it.

Wasn't there a mod that went around with the Nexus 6P that added more options to UI Tuner for NavBar? Could this be done?
I came from Samsung also. If you decide to unlock your bootloader and flash TWRP you can use this. Works great is what I used before I went to pure Nexus. And u can flash back to stock it will stick with it. Until u do factory reset. Comes with aroma installer so you can decide what you want.

Just change them in system ui tuner.
If you don't have it. Pull down statusbar. Press the settings icon and hold it for about 5 secs.
Now you should have it in settings.
Go to navbar
There you can just pull the symbols by holding the = and pull them up or down.

It won't work. That option is not enabled by default. You need to decompile system ui apk and add a line of code to tuner_prefs.xml for nav bar to show up in system ui tuner.

Hi to all!
I'm experiencing a really strange thing when try to set an HOME gesture with some of most famous apps for that purpose, like ALL IN ONE GESTURES, EDGE GESTURES and similar.
If I set recent apps and back gesture, they work in every way I set them...but if I try to set ANY KIND of gesture for returning to home... nothing happens.
The command work properly (I feel the haptic vibration, or alinz, that starts when a command is performed), but the gesture won't work in the end...
Anyone noticed that too? Maybe there's something I missed for make them work?
I use swipe up from bottom border and it works for me. I use aio.

I didn't find the cause yet but it is also happening to me. If I reboot the phone the home gesture starts to work fine, it only breaks if I re-enabled the nav bar + disable immersive mode using their quick tiles provided by joneplustools and systemuituner. The easiest solution is to reboot the phone.

Without root the navbar always shows if you swipe from the bottom. You could try a 0px navbar by I think it doesn't work in OOS at the moment.

Yeah that must be the reason.
If you don't want to root right now your solution is to use a gesture app like edge gestures or swipe navigation because you can use gestures from the right/left edge so you activate the navbar less often.
It's not ideal but is has one advantage; for example when I want to close a game using the back button, the gesture sometimes is not recognized and I have to activate the navbar using the quick setting and that sometimes breaks the home gesture like we discussed yesterday so I have to reboot the phone sometimes. You only have to swipe from the bottom and it's all fine.

According to my experience this kind of problem is most likely caused by a third party app, possibly an xposed module or some half baked apk. Privately exchange a list of your installed apps, compare and concentrate on the more dubious apps you have in common and you may find your culprit there.

Yeah that's the main gripe. I suppose you are concerned about burn-in.
I don't know if stock OOS Oreo will fix that. Maybe some Dev can mod the navbar file as I was done with the old filetype as in the Galaxy S8.
I also can tell you that on LiquidRemix 8.0 ( it's on a Telegram group as is in testing stage ) you could hide the navbar completely without root but I understand that you don't want to change the rom and right now is has bugs so is better to stay in Oxygen.
Right now I'm using stock OOS 4.7.4 with root and to update is super easy, just download and flash the full zip, flash your kernel + magisk/superSu after and it's done.

I can tell you that on a fresh installed OOS 4.7.4 without third party apps it doesn't work. The problem is that on Oxygen the navbar has another name in system so that mod doesn't work.
No I don't care about it because there's no need for it now, at least for me.
I've always rooted phones, no problems with that, it's just that I don't feel the need to do it with 5T since is nearly stock and good to run stock "as is"...
I had an iPhone for a few years and the pixel brought me back. The progress android has made has been phenomenal but I see a few things missing that used to be here before. Honestly I think I'm overlooking it but who knows.
FYI I have an unlocked bootloader and am running magisk running stock rom and kernel.
1. I used to love my Note 1's navbar with the search and menu button in the navbar. I remember xposed being able to do it but the modules haven't been updated and just cause a bootloop on the pixel. The customnavbar by paphonb doesn't allow you to have the menu button on the bar. Is there a way to make this work with oreo?
2. What happened to the text notifications? I replaced Google's main text app with Textra but I recall there being custom notifications and ringers all being in the contacts app.
3. What happened to changing the apps notification sound? Back then it was really easy to set the sound of the apps but I hardly see that feature.
4. Can you change the lockscreen clock font? I changed my system font and the clock has a question mark where the colon used to be. I know I could find another font but I really like this one.
5. How do you get in and out of the phone quickly? I find myself double tapping on the display and most of the time it works. Is there a better way?
Note: I saw some of these tweaks were on substratum but I couldn't get it to work for me. I tried to use substratum but the themes won't take because I'm on stock or because I don't know what I'm doing. I would like a clean lockscreen or one where I could swipe to the left or right and start recording. I forget the name but there used to be an app that customized the lockscreen.
If anyone could help me figure out Oreo I would greatly appreciate it!

The custom nav bar app is the one I was talking about by php. I don't see a way to add the menu button to the nav bar on that app but I'll look and confirm.

So this adds the button that looks like the menu but it doesn't function like the menu at all. It disappears and I think it has to do with the 66 being set as the code. I don't think that's the right code for the menu button to actually work. I took a screenshot.

I have a OP6 and love the gestures so if this hides the nav bar it's a no brainer for me, don't suppose you could post a screenshot showing how it looks?
I am wondering if this is a way to bring back to old style nav bars? Used to be able to add the line to the build prop then reboot and bam they were there. Dont understand why Google let you adjust the notch but not the navbar? It was pretty simple leave the line of code in that allows you to swap.
also curious if you can remove the pill completely in favor of swipe gestures, oneplus gestures are great, but would be better if the pixel 3xl supports this natively, if not, how can we hide the pill?

One plus gestures app should be able to hide the pill. I'll let you know for sure today when I get my Pixel 3...on the truck for delivery

I would say that you are correct. I was comparing my 3 XL to my friends 2 yesterday and while both have Pie installed only he had that option to get the old navigation buttons back.
I really dislike these gestures, if anyone has run across an app or a setting to get the old three button navigation bar back please let me know. I haven't found much in my searching.
can we bring up the old nav bar yet ?
not a fan of gestures
I'm going to go against the grain: I think I *like* the new gestures instead of nav bar. I will admit I would significantly prefer a hardware home button, but in lieu of that, the gestures are fine. I've switched my 2 XL, for example, over to the new gesture system. To each their own -- if you don't like it, you just don't like it. But I would suggest trying it for a week or two.

From reviews I've heard the P3 has the option to bring back the old nav bar and the 3XL doesn't. Weird. I should be getting both of them in a few hours so i'll check out the difference.
Hello,
I am just wondering if there is an option available, that would hide the back button while using the P (Pill) navigation on the Pie.. I'm asking mostly because of cosmetic standpoint.. For apps like Nova Launcher etc.. I love the functionality of the Pill, but because the back button always there, my OCD won't let me use anything else than stock launcher.
By the way, I saw the feature in some Pixel 3 XL ROM, on their forum (at least I think I did saw it..) That enables the Pill to swipe right to go back (as it should be by default by Google) If anyone has any idea or suggestions I would really appreciate it.
Maybe installing Nova Launcher as a system app would work?
I use custom navigation bar app to hide the nav bar all together and have it set up to only pop up when I swipe up on the navbar area. It then goes away a few seconds later.

I'm not sure if you can get rid of the back button but why don't you give the Fluid Navigation Gesture app a try. By using it you can completely get rid of the navigation bar and use only swipes from the bottom and/or edge of the screen to navigate. You can also set up all the actions you want to be present when you swipe up or swipe up and hold etc... Give it a try, a very useful app. ??
Thanks, I will try it!

My system is rooted and FNG has root access granted, but I think it should work without root as well. Give it a try. ?
Look at my screenshot. I have 2 back buttons with the pill. The symitry helps my cdo and having 2 back buttons is convenient.
If i remember correctly, it's done through adb shell. Let me try and find the thread...
Edit: this is the thread i used to give me the 2 back buttons.
