Chrome downloads to hidden location on Android 10 - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I thought I was going mad when I kept downloading files from chrome and they wouldn't show up in the file manager (nor would they open in the proper application if clicking the download from Chrome)
I poked around and found that instead of downloading to the Download folder at /storage/emulated/0/Download it downloads to /storage/emulated/0/android/data/com.android.chrome/files/Download
I'm guessing I could remove the latter folder and symlink it to the former, but that seems hacky (and not likely to fix the problem of opening files)
I looked around Chrome's settings and don't see a way to change it from there.

Yes thats something new by google in android 10 with the downloads thing, app called storage redirect (needs root) will fix this for you

From the description in the play store for that app
This app provides application storage isolation. Once this feature is turned on for an app, that app will only be able to use the isolated storage space defined by us.

That sounds like the reverse of what we want?

Mmm actually i installed the app and didnt play around with its settings it just starts when os boots up and i cancel it all the time but since installing it, chrome now downloads files fo download folder so i think it is because of this app

Since I posted this THREAD things started downloading to the right place. I'm baffled ?

I wish. This is chrome settings:

The location directory isn't changeable, and the behavior is the same if "ask where to save files" is on or off.

Weird, I had this behavior with the Brave browser, but Chrome works the old way...

had the same behaviour on brave and vivaldi browsers. setting "ask where to save files" to OFF fixed the problem, so I guessed it would work also on chrome... I guess that's just another reason to switch to a better and more privacy oriented browser

You got it man did the same thing in chrome and finally device started showing recent downloads in the download folder. I actually turned the "ask where to save" back on and still shows new DL in the folder so a quick little off/on gets the job done. Hopefully is patched soon tho cause was a hassle finding anyone with the same issue as me. On pixel 2 xl btw ?

hah.. Mine asks twice but still down loads to that obscure folder. I thought they did that on purpose. Thanks for letting us know it's correctable without root.

Chrome to phone - rocks!

Just thought I'd give everyone a heads up - I can't believe I have lived without this for so long. Just fantastic.
Agree, fantastic tool.
Im using mozilla as there is an add-on for that too.
So, except for google maps and youtube videos what other uses for ChromeToPhone are there?
Well, you can push any link to your phone and not depend on QR codes. I think thats cool. Just an example, you come across a nice picture you want to use as a wallpaper. Just push a button, beats fiddling with bluetooth/usb after DLing or even using a QR code generator.
Totally agree!
This's just amazing!
I love it and I'm sure I'll use it often!

You're able to dial a phone numbers. You just have to select the phone number in the browser then click on the button. It'll directly send it to your phone and open the dialer application.
Also you're able to select a text and after you click the button in the browser it will be copied in your Android clipboard
Totally! I've used it a couple of times today already.
The fact that it sends maps straight to Google Maps on the phone is gonna be super handy for trips.
I was looking for this. Awesome tool!
It is cool, but it needs to be able to go the other way too.
How many times have you clicked on a page that's slow or cumbersome on your phone, one that's just better suited to your laptop browser? Would be so handy to be able to send from phone to chrome.
It was raised on the code.google site but they said they're not working on it
i found firefox/chrome plugin but i also want IE8 plugin, any one found this yet?
yep, tried it yesterday on mozilla firefox and it works great
Will it drain my batterry? How it works? Is it checking requests from chrome every sec.?

It is a puch service so your phone doesn't actively check for the links sent to the phone but it is pushed to the phone and then the phone downloads it.
Just how the push email works.
Clever stuff!
Can you use it for file transfer, eg put the file into dropbox, copy the shared link, Chrome2Phone and download from the phone's browser?
EDIT: Just realised, there's a Dropbox app, er, for that.

So what is this? An extension to Chrome? I don't find it in Chrome extensions. Searching Google I found an .apk with it suggesting it is an Android app. How does that enable anything in your Chrome browser? Sorry maybe I'm dense

Is there any way to disable the notification sound for this app. I know i can disable notification sounds, but i would like to disable it only for this...
And maybe I should ask this on the Maps brut thread, but when sending a link from google maps it opens in stock Maps app instead of Maps brut (which I chose for default), if I uninstall stock Maps app it just won't load the link.
Does anyone knows a way to launch maps links with Maps brut?
thanks!

Google Play Store (Android Market) v3.5.15
Requirements: Android v2.2+
Overview: Play Anywhere, All your entertainment in one place, Google Play is your one-stop shop for all your favorite entertainment.
ChangeLog:
- You now have the Installed and All tabs you can swipe between. The former one is what we used to have before - it lists all apps installed on your device. The latter lists all apps you've ever installed in case you want to download them again or travel down the memory lane. This is quite handy, and I've seen this list before in the Play Store on the web, so it's great to get it here in the mobile app.
- The All tab contains a handy dropdown with all your accounts (if you added more than one) and lets you switch between them very easily (as opposed to clicking Menu, etc).
- The list of apps you have purchased but uninstalled or haven't installed yet has moved to the All tab... which means it's now mixed in with the free apps you no longer have on the device. I'm not sure how I feel about that - on one hand, I like that it's gone from the first list, but ideally there should be a way to filter paid apps from free in the All list. Maybe someday...
- A few of the stock apps that apparently never got linked to the Play Store before got identified and picked up this time, and updates to such orphans were waiting for me when I fired the Store up. I've complained about this very bug in my last rant, and it looks like someone listened.
- Just like in the web Play Store:
# reviews now show the device used by the reviewer
# reviews can now be sorted by Most Helpful first or Newest first
# you can now filter reviews to show ones for the latest version of the app as well as made by only the device you are using
Installation Guide:
1.Download the apk from the links
2.put the apk on the phone ,don't use adb install *.apk in won't work it will say it already exists
3.Open the apk from the phone using a File explorer (ASTRO for example)
4.it will ask you if you want to replace the current market, press yes.
5.wait for install and voila you have the new market
NOTE:this method replaces the old market.

Troubleshoot:
If you have download problem after Installing new market do this
" Connect your phone to your computer,
set in usb mass storage mode. Look for
a hidden folder called ".android_ secure"
and then delete the file
"smdl2tmp1 .asec". Unmount and you
should be good to go."

Customize Status Bar?

Can anyone tell me how do I customize the status bar icons on my G3? I really need to add a button to enable or disable GPS.
Thanks!
On the toggles drag them all the way left, at the very end there's an edit toggle that will take you to the customization screen thing.

It is bizarre. I can access Google Play, find an app, and attempt to download, except that the app never downloads. I get an error 495. I've googled that error and I've cleaned data and cache from Google Play and Google Framework. I've also removed my Google email address from Accounts, cleared it all again, then added my email again. No joy. Seems there are a small number of people with that problem. It's very frustrating with my brand new phone.

Try downloading an app from your browser and not the Play Store app. This has got mine working in the past when nothing else worked.

Sounds like switching Roms might solve that problem. Are you on the stock Rom? Here's the one I'm using, there are only two for now and they are both leaps and bounds better than stock. Additionally, it may be a problem with an older iteration that rom if you are using a custom one

Call Recorder

It seems that there is a default call recorder on this device (TMO variant). How do I disable, uninstall this?
Can not find any settings for this or where it lives.
Found a file folder called ideacallrecorder. This is where all the files are from recorded calls, but I never installed this app, nor can I find it.

Let me preface this by stating I did not install any call recorder on this device as I have no need for this. On initial set up I made a call and it prompted me to enable call record. After I take/make a call I get a screen that asks if I want to save the recording or add a note. It is somehow linked to some playstore app, but I don't know how to find it.
Go to the play store and view the installed apps?

I'll try the play store option.
I have the package disabler and can't seem to find anything. I also do not know what it would be named. Don't see anything I don't recognize
Attempted installing the prompted app from the play store, cleared cache and data then uninstalled and still no go. May be trying a factory reset, as this is very annoying.
Well, I found the culprit! It was the dam SMS backup app I used. It was the first thing I installed during the set up of the device. Sorry for the confusion, and thank you for everyone's help
For posterity, because finding the source of this "ideaCallRecorder" just drove me NUTS for over an hour:
This apparently came from an app called "Super Backup" ("com.idea.backup.smscontacts...), which has an option to install a "call recorder" function. Once it's installed -- which I did ACCIDENTALLY while rebuilding my lady's phone -- you can't find the function anywhere in the system. The only clue is that folder in the default above-root directory /storage/emulated/0 .
The niggle was that EVERY CALL was being recorded on my lady's phone, and I could not find any way at all to turn call recording off. Until I stumbled on this thread.
The vendor shows up on apkmirror.com as "MobileIdea Studio". I advise to AVOID this dev's "Super Backup" app at all costs! Because it was way too easy for me (and apparently the OP here) to accidentally tap the wrong button on the main screen.
I realize this is 4 years later, but since this problem was such a bear to find for me (and a top-level XDA search didn't give me a lot of help), I figured I would add to the knowledge base, in the hope of making it easier for somebody else to solve this problem if it ever pops up.

That's a different thing, free form is common between all aosp roms, but miui has a custom one known as floating window or so, like you get access through the side widget, that's not possible in aosp, only the recent menu one is available which is not convenient as this.
