HSPA+ on the A70? - Samsung Galaxy A70 Questions & Answers

Is there a way to activate HSPA+ on the A70?
If I have two bars on LTE, then three or more bars on 3g will actually give me more speed. The practical difference is that videos on app such as Instagram, load up really slow, or, if on 3g, load fast and is seamless.
But there's also such a thing as 3G with HSPA+, which is supposed to be faster than regular 3g.
Is there a way to activate this on the Samsung?
Thanks.

Open Settings, go to Connections>Mobile Networks. Tap Network Mode. Select 3G/2G instead of LTE/3G/2G.

That just gives 3G or 2G. I'm looking for HSPA+ 3G.
Well anyway I downloaded an app called HSPA+ Tweaker, and I seem to be getting faster 3G speeds. (7mbps). The "H" often turns into an "H+," which I didn't see before the app.

3G includes hspa+ (h+). and hspa (h) means 3g. I don't recommend using 3rd party apps for such basic things.

When you set your device to 3G from settings, it will automatically switch to H+ depending on what you're doing on the device.
A 3rd party app is not needed for this.

Is there any way to disable automatic switching between UMTS and HSDPA?

In my apartment my G2 constantly switches back and forth between UMTS (3G) and HSDPA (H). Is there any way to stop this? Both look like they have the same number of bars, but it seems like UMTS is way slower. I also should be in a 4G market, so is there a way to tell if I'm on HSPA+ or not?
I've honestly never even seen the 3g icon on my g2. whenever im in kent, when it drops it drops from h, to E

I don't think the stock G2 ROM has a specific icon for 3G, if that's what your'e on. It shows H for 3G/HSPA/HSPA+.
I think the original poster is on Cyanogen, where it does show the type of connection a bit more accurately.
I'd also be interested in trying to force an HSPA connection. I don't think Bell has UMTS data so if I'm labeled as on 3G I can make calls and texts but have to wait for it to switch to H when I start using data.
It's a feature of cyanogenmod that it switches to 3G when heavy data is not required and switches to H+ when you need a faster data connection
That is of course if your running CM on your phone...

It's not a "feature" of CyanogenMod. This also happens on the stock ROM but we do not see the H icon, only the 3G one. Cyanogen himself explained this a while back.

You mean stock sees only the H icon, not the 3G one XD
Also note that if you're not actively using data, it'll show the 3G symbol (on Cyanogen or Sense ROMs) - as soon as you start a connection, it'll switch to an H. This isn't necessarily because the phone is switching between a 3G and HSPA signal, but rather because 3G is also used to carry voice - so if the phone isn't using HSPA for data, it obviously doesn't need to show it.
Thanks for all of the information, guys!

[Q] 3g vs. H designator

Im on tmobile usa and the indicator regularly changes back and forth between 3g and H although im in a strong area for hspa+. Anyone having similar issues? Anyway to 'force' H signal?
i agree
i am seeing the same issue
It's not an issue. This is the way it works. When idle the phone is connected to UMTS and displayed as 3G. When it is pulling or pushing data it switches to HSPA ("4G") its displayed as H.
Most carrier builds hide this change and display the icon as "4G" all of the time.
Nothing to be concerned about.
this is normal. any carrier. saves power. only switches to H when you are actively sending/recieving data.
If the 3G to H transition bugs you, I believe the XXKK6 radio maintains the static H when data is not currently in use.

This is not the case.
If H stands for 4G, then why does my GSM Nexus display it all the time?? Basicly, it shows up H most of the time.
If it is using data, then the 3G sympol comes on... Is this perhaps a bug? Using 4.0.2 stock, the radio is XXKK6...

H isn't 4G. this it what mobile connections are (in a nutshell)
GPRS (G)
EDGE (E)
3G (3G)
HSDPA (H) (you can call it 3G+ also)
4G (4G)
3G is normally active in a good reception area, but when you are using your internet it uses HSDPA because it is quicker, but also uses more battery. When your are not using internet (say in idle), the phone uses 3G to save battery.

Turn off 3G but keep 4G/LTE enabled?

I'm running stock ICS on a VZW Galaxy Nexus. Is there any way to keep 4G/LTE enabled but turn off 3G?
I ask because I often tether my computer at work, but there is a weak LTE signal at my workplace, and a strong 3G signal (they may even have VZW 3G repeaters in the building) and I always end up getting 3G speeds. I've tried a few app from the market "LTE onoff", "3g/4g on/off" and some others but none seem to have an LTE only option. I haven't rooted my phone yet, but would be open to rooting if there is a root only option for this. Would be awesome if someone could help!
There's app called switch pro widgets ($1) and it didn't allow you to toggle the 4g and anything else you want to adjust.

no. the 3g signal is your voice service.
*#*#4636#*#*
Then phone info > LTE Only.
Do note LTE is data only, no voice.

[Q] 3G/4G with Tasker

I'm on Cm 10 4.1.2 and my main goal is to have 3G on until I launch apps like youtube play music etc to have 4G going.
Well so far I'm not having any luck setting my phone to just be on 3g.
Am I just stupid here? or do I need an app or some Tasker plug in to do this?
Thank you for any help you can provide ~
Wow

I have no clue you could do that... I am the biggest noob ever.
I think you're confused on how Tmobile's "4g" works. It's not actually 4G, and runs on the same base as their 3G HSPA network. You can select between 'Edge' which is 2g, and 'high speed' which T-Mo calls 4G but is really just an improved 3G.
Hope that helps!

Hmm that's confusing because of the data icon. I see it go from E to 3G to H to H+ I figged the H's where HSPA which is what T-mobile was calling "4G"
Well if I can only chose between "2G" and "3G" I think I saw that in Tasker. I'll go play with that.
Thank you.
Yeah only way to force 4g/3g is by modding the modem. Which I have had no (successful) luck doing.

Ahhh ok. I did it on my friends Thunderbolt shocked you can't do it on the SIII.
Well I just have it so 5 mins after my screen go's off it switches to 2g and 3G once it's on. That should help the over all battery life some.

How to exclude 2G connections on the Exynos version?

Hi,
In the network menĂ¹ of my unlocked no brand S9+ with Exynos SOC I can't choose to have only 4G and 3G like in LG devices, do You know if there is some secret code or something like that?
My goal is to have the phone only connect to 3G and 4G networks, and never connect to 2G network
Thanks a lot.
I didn't have that option on my S7 and I don't have it either on my S9. It has only 2 options with "only": 3G and 2G.
But I don't miss that, as my goal is having my phone connected to the best available network. For this "LTE/3G/2G (auto connect)" setting works great.

The problem is that once the phone switch to 2G, it will not be possible to return to 3G or 4G unless you close the call, this means worse voice quality and no data connection until you're stuck in 2G.
There is an app called 4G Switcher that I use to set it to UMTS/LTE only. Try it.

You are technically correct, but the chance of that happening - starting a voice call while only in 2G coverage, moving to a 3G/4G area while still speaking and needing data connection while speaking - is a very long shot. Not to mention that if you force 4G/3G and there is only 2G coverage, then you can't make a voice call at all. So between a lesser quality one and not being able to do it, I'll choose the former.
But my opinions are based on my experience, my destinations and the 4G/3G coverage in my country (Romania). There are extremely rare circumstances where there is no 4G/3G coverage here.
I'm using Vodafone Italy, one of the best mobile operator here in Italy, and when I make a long call, i mean longer than 15 minutes, sooner or later it always got stuck on 2G.
So it is a very annoying behavior, and I can't understand why on a LG phone I can exclude 2G and with a Galaxy S9+ I can't.
Any update on this? It is very annoying e.g. when you're calling inside a car to always go and stay stuck in 2G until the end of the conversation, without data connection working
I want to know this too! I always have better 4G reception than 2G but sometimes it gets stuck to 2G.
up, any update about this?

Yea this app works great. But after January 1st I do believe it will not matter. Since they are doing away with anything lower than 4g

I can confirm that even now, if I start a call under 4G and I'm driving, soon it will switch to 2G, no matter what I do, and I'm using Vodafone Italy, one of the best network here.
