proximity sensor - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

i went into the service menu using *#0*# and went into sensors ....but i noticed there is no proximty sensor showing
could someone check their phone also to see if its missing also please...or if its somewhere else
i have it on my note 9 alright
thanks

mine doesn't show up either, however it does work, since when I make call and put receiver next to my head screen goes blank and comes back when I move receiver away.

There is proximity sensor but it is hidden. Only visible when you make calls. You can see a blinking dot at the site of front camera, try cover it

thanks guys
probably only work during call so.... can't use it with case do.....mmmm

Definitely restrictions now that it's placed under the screen. Note 9 and previous versions, you could place the device to your ear when in a message thread and it would dial that person. This feature no longer works.

That's slick. Too bad it's gone.
Punching the screen when you don't have the time isn't fun. Every little trick helps when your in a crunch.

Position sensor or something?

Ok, it seems there is a position sensor in TyTN (correct me if I'm wrong). When my phone is in its case on my belt and it's turned on (usually by a call), it's rotated (as if the keyboard's open). It takes too long time for it to rotate, and I can't answer the call until it rotates back to normal. So my question is, can this sensor be turned off, or is there other thing, that makes the screen to rotate and eventually how can I solve the problem? Thanks in advance.
P.S. I'm useing Schap's ROM, but the problem existed in the official rom, and the Black rom, and the official WM5 rom
no position sensor that I know of and I have never had this problem :s

Yeah, there is a position sensor on the hermes. It's a magnetic sensor that detects whether the keyboard is open or not.
The problem is most likely your case. I've heard of issues like yours. The magnetic snap on the case fools the hermes into thinking the keyboard is open.
I don't believe that there is a fix to bypass the sensor, as it is hardware. But I may be wrong. If not then you might need to look at another case that uses velcro or something.

ah now that would make sense, i never use that stupid case that comes with it, they are really ugly! so that would explain why i never noticed it.
My wife came up with a great solution when I had this poblem (standard case causing phone to start in landscape) - turn the phone the other way round! Now I have the screen facing my belt and the phone is ALWAYS in portrait when I get it out.
Sounds silly, but try it - it works!
Yep, that's a sollution, but there is one other detail. There's no other position I can plug the earphones .

Solution..... Bluetooth Headphones.
It appears to be a magnetic switch...
Your case must have a strong magnet on it, I can't get it to effect the switch if the phone is completely closed. Only if I have it partially open.

I have exactly the same problem. Also, my phone is NEVER put into standby before closing the keyboard.
I'm going to try storing it with the screen facing towards my belt.
I simply use Brando case and HTC BT S-100 headset. and never have a problem with phone starting in landscape.

I've come to notice that no one REALLY knew how to fully disable screen rotation on WM devices.
Some offered 3rd party apps to get the job done, some only knew how to disable automatic rotation, but when the device went into standby and woke up again - the screen rotated back. So that didnt really work.
So if you're as desperate as i was about screen rotation,
this is what you need to do:
1. Get dotfred's free taskmanager HERE, and run it.
2. Go to "Devices" tab, and look for "MIS1:" device (oem_misc.dll)
3. Long-Tap on it, and tap on "Stop"
4. Long-Tap on it again, and now choose "Set Manual"
5. Go to "Notifications" tab, and look for "Notifications\NamedEvents\VCPowerWakeupEvent"
6. Tap on it to make it selected
7. Disable it
(In dotfred's taskmanager, there should be a button for disabling it, but for some reason some devices couldn't see the button icons, although the buttons are still clickable. Under the notifications list there is an empty light-blue line - the buttons are there, eventough you can't see them.
The disable buttons is somewhere i the middle of that light-blue line, just tap the center until a message box popps up and asks if you'd like to disable this notification - Tap on yes.)All those steps are a one time deal - they stick even after an SR.
This has been tested on htc universal and works great.
The screen will keep its orientation even if you flip your screen, take out your built in keyboard, or turn the device off and back on.
The only time your screen will revert back to the original orientation is when you soft reset your device.
Hope this helps

It's also the way to receive less radiation in your body, because the GSM antenna is pointing away from your waist.

I can, and I used a Tesla-meter to measure them:
in-between the two magnets of the case and the lid, there are around 150 mT (Millitesla) which is pretty much!
for comparison:
a usual horseshoe magnet would have 1 mT, the magnetic field of the earth has about 0,05 mT!

HELP? Totally - Disable Proximity Sensor TP2

I have a Touch Pro2 T-Mobile and yes it has a Proxy and light sensor.
However it does not work well ...
I have to hold the phone .. very close to my ear .. if i move it away just a little. the screen turns on .. and my ear pushes the on screen buttons.
Very Annoying!
I found a program that works really well ..
Link> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=488991
The proxy sensor conflict's with this program.
however .. if i cover the Proxy with my finger
BEFORE I make a call and don't uncover it .. your Program takes over and WORKS GREAT
I need to find a way to TURN OFF / DISABLE the Proxy Sensor!
ANY IDEAS ??? Reg Hack ?? Or What DLL Controls The Proxy Sensor ?
I was under the impression that it was the gyro, not a proximity sensor. If I make a call then put the phone in a vertical position the screen turns off, if it lay the phone down in my hand, the screen turns on. I have noticed that sometimes I need to exagerate my movements for it to work properly. I've also accidentally hung up on people by holding the phone with just my shoulder to my ear and bending over to grab something off the floor. *click* whoops!
Looks like possibly \HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCSensor\GSensor\ might be a place to start, I don't see a specific key that is obviously for turning off the screen during calls though.
ETA: HOWEVER - there is a registry key for a proximitysensor - \HKLM\Sotfware\HTC\Proximity\ProximitySensorOn & ProximityDetectStatus Both are defaulted to 0 (which I believe is TRUE) on mine. Perhaps try changing the SensorOn to 1 and reboot and test.

WarlockW, I was reading over the thread about that program, and it mentions "disabling use of the sensor [by] using the config app"...so it sounds like there's some setting in it that will tell it to just ignore the sensor. I haven't tried that app, but it sounds like that might get around the conflict you mentioned
Thanks for the responses guys ..
Unfortunately epoh ...
registry key for a proximitysensor - \HKLM\Sotfware\HTC\Proximity\ProximitySensorOn & ProximityDetectStatus Both are defaulted to 0
Does Nothing to turn it off ..
And sirphunkee ...
"disabling use of the sensor [by] using the config app"...
There is no setting the program that seems to help
I Even Talked with the maker of the program - You can see his response
if you goto the end of the thread :/
So I am Left with a puzzle .. How to turn off the dam sensor ..
I am Guessing a DLL prob runs that sensor ..
I would be willing to donate $$$ to someone that figures out this " puzzle "
( Thats How Much It Bugs Me lol )

I'm getting the feeling your sensor isn't triggering properly (i.e. it thinks you're farther than you are). Check out THIS video demo of the proximity sensor...if you recreate the conditions there in the video, does your screen go off at the same distance it does for the guy's finger in the vid?
I found some references on other boards to that same app you tried, and they mentioned the same thing about it disabling the sensor...but none of them mentioned how exactly, they just said it solved the problem for them
Best way to tottaly shut off the sensor is get a case that covers it up. I have one of those, although my sensor works fine (it activates on 1 inch from my face and honestly i dont hold the phone further away).
Actually I had the exact opposite problem. It did not activate at all and I would be talking on the phone and getting all mad about it, untill I read in the forums that the case might be covering it up.
After that I tested it my self and figured that was the problem. Anyway go look for a nice case that covers the Proximity sensor. Its located on the top left side of the phone right above the HTC logo.
I got my case from the T-Mobile store for $30 and it works great for me. Every time I drop my phone on the ground I thank "Bodyglove" for making this case lol

I'm trying to not have to cover-up my proximity sensor. My problem is different than everyone else's, though. My proximity sensor turns off the phone even when I'm not in a phone-call. Therefore, when reaching for the power button, or the Start-Menu Icon (or just while holding the phone) the screen will turn-off...

[Q] Gyro sensor not working

I've just discovered that my gyro sensor doesn't work. I am running rooted stock 4.1.1. The phone can not detect tilt movements. And under Settings->Motion->Sensitivity settings->Gyroscope calibration, the blue dot does not move from the center, no matter which orientation the phone is held. All of the options under Motion don't seem to work. I just want to see if anybody else has the same problem before calling TMobile.
Firstly, this should have been posted in the q&a section.
And the blue circle isn't supposed to move. You lay the phone on a flat surface and it calibrates itself.

Sorry for posting in the wrong section. You are right about the blue dot not moving. I downloaded a few apps that detect sensors and all built-in sensor seem to be working as they are supposed too. I have problem for example of taking screenshot with a palm wipe or zooming picture by tilting the device, muting phone by turning it over, etc. None of these features work on my phone. Will try to explore more to see what the real problem is.

Before you go off the deep end, run the test on the sensor.
in the stock dialer:
Quick Test Menu
*#7353#
select the accelerometer tester and ilt the phone whatever way you want. If the arrows don't change, then the sensor isn't working. If the Arrows do change, then all good, no panic necessary...
Good Luck
Aloha
Thank you for your help. I ran the sensor test and the sensors work. I also turned on the Motion switch but the Motion features still don't work for me. Maybe this is a software issue. I will continue to explore and will report back if I've found something.

Hi,
Please do the following:
Pull the top notification bar down by using a downward swipe.
Tap on the Toothed Wheel in upper right corner
scroll down till you see the System divider (below the Add account line)
is Motion ON on the right side of it? if not, turn it on.
Tap on the word Motion
Are any of the options you want to use set with a check in the box?
if not, put the check in whatever you want to use by tapping on the box on the right of the function.
Example:
If you want to use Palm swipe for screen captures, tap on the box on the right of the option.
the boxes toggle these options so if you want the option off, then tap on the checkmark and it'll go off.
When you're done, click on the back button on the right side of the menu bar below the screen till you get back to the homescreen.
You are done, and the selected options should now function.
simple huh?
Thank you, bobolinko. I've been doing exactly what you described and no motion feature works for me. I begin to think that my software has a problem, because it does crash occasionally and software upgrade check hangs forever in the "checking for software updates..." screen and never comes back, no matter if I am on wifi or on 4G. Let me reinstall stock firmware and report back.
Try it like this:

Also, has it EVER worked?
Thanks!

Thanks for the video. I did exactly as shown and nothing happens. I never tried Motion before until I needed to capture my screen and discovered that it doesn't work for me. In the mean time, using PWR and HOME button at the same time does allow me to capture the screen, so I don't really need Motion feature working for me. I am just thinking that my software has a problem and I will need to reinstall stock. Thanks a lot for your help in any case.

Any way to disable the proximity sensor?

I'm having issues with the screen not turning back on after a call or even listening to audio messages. I have to relock and then unlock to get it to work, very annoying.
I'm on 8.1, on magisk with xposed.
Could someone recommend me an app or a module?

You along with a bunch of us... ota messed it up
Good to know, I'm not the only one. Doesn't seem related to screen protector.
Really wish I can disable the proximity sensor for now.
I guess I came to the wrong thread. I don't have any issues like that or at least I don't notice it because I is the power button to turn the screen in/off all the time and I set my lock screen to not relock the phone for 5 minutes or something like that. That way I don't gotta enter my unlock code. There also is a setting which is supposed to keep your phone unlocked as long as you don't set it down. There also is a setting that keeps your phone from locking if you are within range of a Bluetooth (headseat maybe) device. I dunno try some of those options maybe you won't need to type your code in as much.
Personally I came here because I am looking for a way to completely disable my proximity sensor. I absolutely hate them on all phones. How stupid is it that they put the proximity sensor I right up next to where you have to put your hand if you want to pull down the menu bar??? It's like I go to pull down the menu bar - screen off. ****! Power button, slide open the lock screen (no code needed). Pull menu bar - screen off ****! Power.... Slide....menu bar - screen off. Of course it only does that during calls however that's a pretty annoying time because you're usually focused on other things and not wanting to **** with the screen going on and off.
Who the needs a proximity sensor to detect one's face anyway? I just click the power button every time I put the phone to my ear. Any time I don't do that, I run the risk of my cheek pressing the mute button for the 9000th time in my life. I do love Android though.

So it works too well for you with your finger but not enough for your face to prevent muting? LOL. Sorry never had that problem. I just avoid the middle if I had to get to the notifications during a call.
It happens often when I'm trying to toggle BT because my BT icon is directly under it.... For example. Anyway, I don't find it useful to even have an proximity sensor. That's why I stumbled in here, my search query was the exact title. I'm not really experiencing the problem the others were talking about though....

Who needs a proximity sensor? Really? You basically answered your own question. To turn off the screen when you put it to your face so that your face doesn't press anything on the screen. Having to press the power button every time you put the phone to your face and then press it again every time you take it away from your face would suck.

Yeah.....no basically pressing the power button is where it's at. It the again I'm not one who likes everything done for me. Absolutely NO PHONE I've ever owned has had a proximity sensor that was worth a ****. They all, at one time or another, allow the screen to wake up subsequently letting the microphone mute button to enable. The mute button is another piece of Android trash that needs redesigning. It is not often that mute is needed so why not out that in a drop-down menu or something since it inevitably gets pressed during calls due to a ****y proximity sensor and Screen wake setup.
I also drive a manual transmission car. Actually the last 5 cars I've owned have been manual shifted. When YOU are in 100% control of your devices, there are certain niceities which are otherwise unavailable. But that's only if you're the type who doesn't gotta have everything done for them.
As far as you go buddy, if you like the proximity sensor that's fine. Personally I don't ****ing care what you like. thanks for a wasted Fred post which contacted my email to have me come back here to tell you what a waste of time that was thanks.

So I assume you have earbuds, or if not, you can get some really cheap earbuds from the gas station, and when needed, you can plug it in, and it will register that it has earbuds in and will light up again, disabling the proximity sensor. You can leave it in as well, until you need it to talk, unless it will work while calling. This should work, I haven't personally tried it.

I'm having issues with the screen not turning back on after a call or even listening to audio messages. I have to relock and then unlock to get it to work, very annoying.
I'm on 8.1, on magisk with xposed.
Could someone recommend me an app or a module?

Hi,
Hope you managed to solve the issue.
If you haven't then
1. Install sensor disable from xposed repo. It's an old app so there are a few bugs when you try to remove the sensor as such.
2. Buy the Pro version or use lucky patcher to disable in app purchases for Sensor Disabler.
3. Go to the settings of Sensor Disabler and blacklist the apps that you don't want the proximity to work on.(I had problems with my WhatsApp. But it works perfectly now.)

Question Display on during a call

So my display is on during a call and with my ear and face touching it will engage the icons and open up apps, torn settings on and off in the drop-down. How do I fix this?
I had the same problem with my old op7pro - the sensor seemed a bit wonky. I haven't seen it yet on my 9 pro, but I used to put myself on hold all the time on calls with my cheek, it was super annoying.
It might be related to the case you use. Try calling someone without the case and see if that helps.
