my friend has the Sony Xperia Z2 and the viewfinder (camera preview screen) is pretty smooth, it's like 60fps but when I look at mine Lg G3 with 3gb ram it looks 30fps. btw both phone where at the same light condition.
given that the camera is not the same, it could be a simple hardware difference. could be the camera app at fault. could be a difference in recording settings. could be anything, the info provided is less than helpful.

Considering this thread exists I think 30fps in the rom stock without mods.

I think what he meant is when looking at the screen when the camera is open , the framerate when panning around is not smooth, not the actual video recording itself .
@screwyluie I think you are right. But I think that the could have the same hardware. But I hope somebody can mod it.
@crash4fun I have that mod but 60fps is only when recording and I meant 60fps in the live preview screen.
@joejoe23 Yes thank you that's what I meant

Yup, its 6 to 30 fps in preview screen.
Check out /system/etc/camera_config.xml. Especially, keys "camera_preview_fps_range_rear" and 5 following keys. Modifying the second, "maximum" value doesn't have any effect even in bright lit environment. You may try modding the lower bound, however no one knows what effect this would have.

I think it will affect the battery nothing more. I really want to test it now but I need my phone.
We need to contact @Hendrickson the guy who made this mod: "[MOD] Camera mod v2. Improve 4K 2160p birate, 1080p 60fps and camera compression" to test this

Well, i once again changed maxfps to 60 in every condition, and there is some improvement in fps in bright light. It's not as smooth as it should be (constant 60 in viewfinder) but it is good enough. I guess we can try upping the lower bound to 30 or 60, this may help.

no force closes yet. Will try to record 4k video with 50mb bitrate for all 5 mins, to see if phone will overheat/fail to record video because of heightened cpu/gpu load.
I edited it on-phone, using jota text editor.
15 mins later...
My 4k, 60 fps, 50 mbits video was recorded just fine
I think that once you are shooting video, fps of the preview screen is locked to video's fps, so that "test" may have been totally useless... Anyway, things are looking good. No force close, video/photos are doing just fine, and preview is somewhat snappier.

I'll record one sample video in "dark and noizy" conditions (it's 00h in Moscow, so it'll be quite easy), and one in "morning sun" condition's (8h later, after some sleep). Then i'll upload both here
Edit: I finally know why 4k suddenly became 60 fps... It's mx player bug, it shows incorrect values. It's still 50 mbits, though

"Camera_preview_fps_range_night_front"
"Camera_preview_fps_range_ia_rear"
"Camera_preview_fps_range_full_frame_continuous_rear"
Did you tried to edit the one with "_night_" in them?
What does "ia" stand for?
and the last one, what does that?
I'm googling now hoping to find some answer

About meaning of "ia" parameter... No clue, will have to dig into documentation later.
The last one must be for FOCUS_MODE_CONTINUOUS.

Anybody else have a problem playing back 8K video on PC? I get vertical lines when I playback on my RTX2080Ti Windows 10 via Media Player Classic and VLC. Seems fine playing back on phone and other devices though. I had no problems playing back a sample 8K video from a S20+. I wonder what could be the problem.

Hi there, same exact problem here. I am connected to a B9 OLED TV and I also have a C7 (both doing the same), so it's not the TVs.
I have made lots of tests, and it seems like a frame-skipping issue (both in 8K and 4K that could be causing the issue playback) as other 8K videos from other sources are working (tried from RED camera). Here are my results if this can help you and Samsung (all test recorded to the internal memory of the S20 Ultra ) :
- Different decoder (Windows Store, VLC and MPC-HC) = Vertical Lines
- 8K with display at 120hz from my 2080ti+B9 = Vertical Lines
- 8K with display at 60hz from my 2080ti+B9 = Vertical Lines
- 8K with playback on my iMac 5k = No Vertical Lines (but frame-skipping - the GPU/CPU is strong enough to decode H265 8K, not the problem)
- 8K with HDR disabled in Windows 10 (RGB/4:4:4 8bit) = Vertical Lines
-4k at 30FPS with video stabilization with "Auto-HDR" = Choppy (even from the phone)
-4k at 30FPS without stabilization with "Auto-HDR" = choppy, but still here and there
-4k at 30FPS without stabilization without "Auto-HDR" = less choppy, but still here and there
-4k at 30FPS with video stabilization with "High Efficiency video" on", so BT.709 (8bit) = Near perfect
- I have tried other softwares on the phone to capture videos, the one that comes with the OSMO Mobile 3 = same problem
- With Filmic Pro, you can control the shutter speed, but no HDR and lots of noise in the videos (not efficient encoding).
Conclusion so far :
I can see, both in 4K and 8K, when HDR10+ (BT.2020) is on the videos are missing frames (so either choppy or giving us vertical lines and artifacts). Samsung has to release a fix.
Auto Focus is always doing something (focusing-refocusing).

I am not impress with the camera system on that phone so far. It might not be about the hardware, but the software that is not optimized, but who knows! The bottom line is that I bought this smartphone to get rid of my big mirror less when on a field trip to shoot videos in HDR10 so I can benefit (on my OLED's) and it's not even an option now. The only lens working "as it should" for me so far is the front one. All others on the back are problematic with wrong colours.
If Samsung can release an update soon, that will be great.
A bit more on Frame-Skipping
After more research, it seems that the problem is that the phone can't handle or is not set to "constant" 29.97 FPS in 4K or 23.98 FPS in 8K. If you open the details in the video file, it's either at 23.20FPS or something similar instead of of 23.98 like it supposed to be, so players are adding artifacts or choppiness video. The worst is when you record 4K with all the package (HDR10+ with image Stabilization and auto-"broken"-focusing) where instead of 30FPS as expected, it's between 27fps and 28 fps which is abnormal frame per seconds.
The temporary workaround is to disabled one of the two (HDR10+ or IMage Stabilization) and then 4K video will be at 29.97. As for 8K, the only workaround is to "reencode" to file making sure it's set to "constant" 23.98 fps.
Hope this help and will update later if I can find a way to get 8K recorded at proper speed. I am on the Snapdragon 865 by the way.
The best player I have found to reproduce the proper image (HDR10) and the profile of 709 in 8K is the MPV (you got to be full screen and ensure to make a config file and have in it a line hwdec=nvdec-copy . Not too sure why the copy makes thing works, but it does . VLC is giving me the wrong gamma and contrast, but this one is perfect so far.

EDIT: LOOKS LIKE BIXBY ROUTINES WAS UPDATED TO SUPPORT MOTION SMOOTHNESS AND SCREEN RESOLUTION AUTO SWITCHING, SO NO NEED FOR THE DYNAMIC DISPLAY APP OR ADB ANYMORE!
SETUP BIXBY ROUTINE
Settings
Advanced features
Bixby Routines
Add (+)
You can add an application (app opened) of your choice or whatever else you want
Under display you can select Motion Smoothness and Screen resolution
(In my case I selected Standard and WQHD+ for YouTube)
No need to create an exit routine, when you leave the app it will revert back to your original settings (in my case FHD+ Adaptive)

You need to use the app that I linked. The link takes you too a reddit page where you need to get it from Github. Thats the app for the FPS. The Bixby routine is only for the resolution and only have of the steps needed.
I've used tasker profile to simply force some apps under 60hz
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s20/how-to/force-app-to-run-120hz-t4053133
I think adaptive refresh is not fully optimised
https://m.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note20_ultra_5g-review-2149p3.php
and that causes the bad battery drain. Since I've implemented the tasker routine battery now drains normally. Hopefully next firmware update fixes it.

When it switches back to 1080p its default is 60fps. In the top right corner of the app if you hit the 3 dots it has has an option to set default hz. Set it to 120hz.

Nice, but the goal with this is to force the resolution to change from 1080p to 1440p and vice-versa. The fps is to just reset 1080p back to 120hz automatically since it defaults to 60hz when switched back.

I haven't tried the 96hz personally, but I don't see why it wouldn't work as long as your in 1080p. I don't think there is an option for 96hz in the default refresh rate setting so it be per app.
You could set it and try the UFO FPS test to see if its actually 96hz.

Thats what you need the Dynamic Display app for. Bixby routines will only switch the resolution. You need to use both Bixby Routines and Dynamic Display in conjunction.
Its explained in the main post.

I can't make this work, each version I get the same result.
I have the Bixby Routine set up, which works flawlessly.
But once I exit back to system the display does drop to FHD but only at Standard (60Hz).
I have set the default Hz in the Dynamic Display to 120 Hz, and I have enabled both the WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS and the Accessibility option for Dynamic Display but still it doesn't work.

Hi, I also want to test this, when I get my Poco F3. Can you post which gcam mod exactly you use?

I made a few test videos with different settings: https://mega.nz/folder/zVljkA4S#IIvT6jlU-Xy0MdUYhGzOAA
The occasional skips are because of the notebook not the camera. It looks like the gcam 4k 30fps is only 30mbit/s and 4k 60 is around 50mbit/s like stock 4k 30fps.
If you go frame by frame you can clearly see that the 60fps does have more frames.
I also noticed that the stock cam is more zoomed in than the gcam (except for 1080p 60fps).

Very interesting, which gcam did you use? I'd like to try it out myself. 4k60 does look better than 1080p60 and about the same smoothness too. The reason why it's more zoomed in in stock camera is because of EIS, gcam usually has worse EIS than stock camera but it appears as you have disabled EIS in gcam.

Has anyone managed to turn on image stabilization in GCAM? I tested several versions. I was able to turn on 60fps in 4K. However, EIS does not run in a rare resolution. The corresponding option in GCAM is of course enabled.

I would also recommend the latest version. The version I linked was just what I had installed when I made the test.
For BSG cams the versions _snap _MGC _ENG... are afaik only different package names. That will allow you to install multiple gcams at the same time. So it doesn't really matter which of these you use.
It actually seems to be working.
I didnt saw any codec stuf. But was filming the ground and the the rocks while walking and changing between 30 and 60 and was night and day. Way smoother

Huh it actually works, there is no EIS on the 60fps options I tried in gcam. Sad but the fact that 4k60 is possible is great news.
I have very good news. I spent a few hours "playing" with Gcam. I was able to turn on stabilization at 60 fps in FHD and 4K resolutions - main camera. I made a few more improvements for better photo quality. If you want to enjoy video stabilization:
1. Install the latest version of BSG. I used this: https://1-dontsharethislink.celsoazevedo.com/file/filesc/MGC_8.1.101_A9_GVy_ENG.apk
2. Change Gcam settings with my file arkadia_Gcam_settings_ver2.xml
Sample photos and video with my settings. Of course, to see them in original quality, you need to download them to your computer.

Change the color scheme to standard, it helps a little with the contrast, another fix I didn't find, very frustrating as well with the hdr and dolby vision support you see very bad dark scenes

Yes sir, I've tried this but still not as expected.
Do you know is this a software bug or hardware? Means is it better to wait for xiomi to fix or to replace tab with other?

I don't think it will be fix, the tablet it's already on the market for almost a year and its not fixed, from what I saw if you have a download movie and you watch it with km player or mx player and choose the colours scheme to standard it's ok'ish but in Netflix app is terrible in dark scenes
you get what you pay for folks, it ain't no Ipad / Samsung Tab quality hence the low price tag
If you use a player which you can control the brightness and the contrast you will have better results, so that means the tablet is capable of better results
I wish HDR - Dolby could be deactivated. But it's impossible, even with root.
Do you have auto brightness turned on or off? Is this HDR content on Netflix?

We must push feedback
Yes the brightness is a little low so I have to watch Netflix in a dark room!
SDR content is fine for me, so definetly HDR/Dolby Vision is the reason
you can try downgrading your netflix plan to Standard which removes HDR/Dolby Vision support
but of course this may not be practical for you
another solution is to use Kodi + Netflix plugin, it has the ability to disable HDR/Dolby Vision even if you are on a premium plan
It's a shame because the screen is actually really good, I don't think its a hardware problem
But I also doubt it will be changed/fixed, maybe if we throw enough report at them
So the fix for this would be to go to special features and then sidebar inside which you have a video toolkit
Enable it for Netflix
And then whilst playing Netflix videos open the sidebar and enable the vision booster option in the sidebar if it shows
this issue has been reported to the official xiaomi forums
feel free to write a reply there that you have the same issue, so it gets more attention from xiaomi
also you can report it on your device from settings -> feedback and provide the Report Id to the feedback team at the forum

I use this apk to watch netflix in hd without hdr. https://mega.nz/file/kVgDFARC#rA6ASZB-cR65_t-PlHHUwV-6VobbEBc-dEMniK563cI
It from a post in galaxy s2 forum to active hd in unsupported l1 device.
The Display are to dark for HDR Content. 500 nits are not enough

I tried this. Enabled video toolkit for Netflix and selected "Outdoor" as style. The dark scenes became immediately much brighter
But sadly we don't have a fix for custom roms
If anyone has any inputs on this then pls share

Can you use Tasker to activate outdoor style as well?
