Development potential oft redmi note 8 / redmi note 8 pro - Redmi Note 8 Questions & Answers

Hi everybody,
I am considering to buy this phone, (rmn8 pro), however it ships with the mediatek G90T processor. in the past my understanding was that ROM development for mediatek based phones is troublesome due to missing sources. Can anyone confirm this issue for me?
Would it therefore be better to buy the non pro version of rthe rmn8 shipping with an snapdragon 655 processor?

Yeah I'd like to know it too.

OK - so it seems that if we want custom ROMs we should go with the non pro version.
Based on xiaomis history and the development activity for the redmi note 3 snapdragon and redmi note 3 mediathek there is a considerable difference.
Furthermore it appears that it took 3 years for xiaomi to release the kernel source for the rmn 3 and the rmn 2 mediatek version. In general it appears that the source release is up to the OEMS - e.g. Xiaomi. Mediathek is known to only distribute the source to customers or people who are willong to pay.
This is kind of disappointing as the pro version of the rmn8 is quite a bit better.
Any other opinions ?

I want the pro version but mtk processor no way ill be buying as I want gcam and custom roms.

I would suggest you to wait for the Global launch because Xiaomi might launch RN8Pro with Snapdragon soc..

That could be the case, but I guess it won't happen as they try to create some hype around the new helio chips.

If Xiaomi released source code for kernel, there is chance for start develop custom ROMs and kernels, but SoC from Qualcomm Snapdragon still more universal. I think MediaTek will get custom ROMs/kernels but Gcam will be more problematic. In my opinion XDA members should try create better support for MediaTek SoC. Why ? MediaTek Helio G90T it's seriously impressive SoC with some more performance than SD730G.

The phone is very, very good

The problem is that MTK doesn't fully release the sources of their SoC's that's why it has low development here in XDA.

Exactly my thoughts.... Redmi Note 7 pro has lot of developments going on and it is better than Redmi Note 8.
Redmi note 8 has Samsung sensor which does not have much gcam support.
Redmi note 7 pro has Sony sensor which works flawlessly with gcam.

Well about development, sure note 7 Pro may have better Dev support coz it's an older device but as far as gcam support is concerned, you may be wrong, I'm using note 8 and it's working flawless. At least it's giving much better camera results when compared to poco

Is Mediatek chip is better than Snapdragon as redmi said?

We already saw all the performance of Mediatek chip, the performance is not better than snapdragon. But redmi claims that the mediatek chip is better than snapdragon 712. What do you guys think about this?

Of course, G90T is more powerfull than SD712...
CPU : Cortex A76 are better than Cortex A75 (Kryo 360 is a very slight customisation)
GPU : Mali G76mc4 is better than Adreno 616
RAM : 2133Mhz is better than 1866 (both lpddr4x dual Channel)
ISP : 3x MNFR up to 64MP are better than 2x MNFR up to 48MP.
Thinking the opposite is nothing but forejudgement...or troll.
Of course, you can find some apps that will run better on 712 (for exemple, emulators), but it's not a problem of power but of app's unoptimized code.
Not everything is all about specs, but about optimization and quality of sources, of which Mediatek is not famous at all. Broken sources, ROMs filled with bugs and etc. It would be great, if Mediatek would have forums like CAF, that would considerably boost development, but...
I once used Mediatek device and got fed up with it being completely locked and sources being broken completely. My opinion, though.
Just look at the Xiaomi Redmi Pro ( this one ). It came with android 6.0 and never received any further android update. But it's not like that this time, I easily get 9 hours SOT with gaming.
Battery life for me is VERY good. About to go to bed with 50% battery left with light use during the day and heavy use all evening.

My Redmi Note 8 Pro lasts for about a day and 10 hours mostly. At the end of the day there is almost 48% battery left. I'm much satisfied with its battery timings

I am very satisfied with Mediatek performance on this phone. I noticed big difference between Redmi note 7 that I have with Redmi note 8 pro that I have now.
Think things are different this time, the redmi N8 pro is a game changer this phone is awesome the battery life lasts all day power using and the phones a beast. i speed tested it against my sammy note 9 eight gig version and my Mi mix 3 eight gig version and it was neck and neck. But here we are a note 9 eight gig is a 1200$ phone and the mi mix 3 is a 450$ phone and a 240$ is running with them and the camera is outstanding better than the sammy n9 and the mm3 so dollars for dollars there's a big difference there.
same price as mi 9 lite...
i would go for the mi 9 lite

Are there any chances that redmi note 8 pro will get custom rom support

i am thinking to buy either redmi note 8 pro or poco f1 for a friend of mine. The poco f1 has a great support from custom rom developers but on the redmi side there has been some problems. Even miui.eu stopped supporting redmi note 8 pro and there has been some problems with twrp. So which is a better buy, redmi note 8 pro or poco f1.
I was thinking to ask the same. Since xiaomi.eu dropped support this week I am pretty sure this is dead device from that point of view. I am giving back my RN8 Pro to vendor and go with MI9 SE instead. Better display, better camera, smaller, lighter and for the same price..
Maybe GSI:s will work well for it. Seem to be some people that got them running.
i think no...if bricked its so hard to flash..need authorized account...this why no development
I was interested on this device but ended up ordering a regular Snapdragon Note 8. Mediatek just can't get it yet. Maybe in the future.
But yeah, for now avoid Mediatek devices if you want to mod then. It's a sad reality, and it has been true for many years. Hope it changes someday.

Is it still worth it to buy the Redmi Note 8?

I currently have the budget to buy a phone in the prices of the Redmi Note 8 and the Redmi Note 9, I am really into custom roms and I'm currently leaning into buying the Redmi Note 8 just because of it. Will the Redmi Note 8 still be supported by the developers here in the long run or are a lot of them transitioning in buying the new Redmi Note?
In my experience the redmi line have developer support during several years. My last phone was a redmi 5 plus (vince) and even today there are quality custom roms available (but there are not many options anymore). I bought a RN 8 recently and I think it is still a good device, especially considering that RN9 has a mediatek processor and the development for that device is going to be harder. Sorry for my bad English btw.

appreciate it, my brother just bought a Redmi Note 9, I'm not really feeling the size of the phone, plus I don't think there's going to be much development because of the processor? I guess I'll just go with this, the roms with the RN8 seems pretty great.
Take into consideration that Xiaomi is really delaying updates for this phone, even Redmi note 7 got updates sooner.

Question If you want custom roms which is better to get OnePlus 11 or Pixel 7 Pro?

Specs wise I would like to get OnePlus 11 but I've been seeing some info that maybe custom roms won't be coming. Any guidance is appreciated.
The Pixel 7 Pro definitely has more development. OnePlus made it difficult to recover from bricking so many developers have passed them up. A OnePlus 11 running LineageOS or AOSP based ROM would be amazing though.
Get a OnePlus 9 Pro. Comparable CPU, faster GPU with better support than Mali, display is kind of a wash (it's dimmer on the OnePlus but people tend to think the colors are better than the Pixel 7 Pro), much better modem, $600 new on Amazon or you can get them pretty cheap on Swappa and there are a ton of custom ROMs as well as unbricking tools available in case you need them. Don't buy the T-Mobile model though, you'll be hating life. Just get the regular unlocked model, LE2125.
Peep the OnePlus 9 Pro forum and see just how much dev support the thing has.
OnePlus 9 Pro
The OnePlus 9 Pro is a 6.7" phone with a 1440x3216p 120Hz display. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset is paired with 8/12GB of RAM and 128/256GB of storage. The main camera is 48+8+50+2MP and the selfie camera is 16MP. The battery has a 4,500mAh capacity.

If you want privacy, Pixel 7 Pro with Graphene OS.
Oneplus 9 pro is still great.
So far nobody is recommending OP11. So you guys don't feel very confident about OP11 custom rom prospects?

Not without a recovery tool being available. Just look at the 10 Pro and 10T before it that didn't have one either.
As long as there is nothing like MSM Tools, noone will recommend Oneplus'es new flagship phone Oneplus 10 Pro upwards.
OnePlus 9 pro seems like it'll be the only OP device with support for ROMs. I like the 9 pro. It's been a good phone. Soon as I can sell my S22 ultra I'll be going back to it more than likely.
