Remarks and questions after one month of usage - Xiaomi Mi A3 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hello,
After a month of utilisation, I have some remarks and questions about this phone :
Remarks
1. Laggy camera but Gcam does the job. Camera quality is very good perhaps slight lower if not on par than with my previous Huawei P20. I'm happy with it
2. Selfie camera is good but I don't use it a lot
2. Battery life is solid 2 days of battery life easily
3. Screen is OK even though it's 720p
4. Fingerprint sensor is horribly slow than P20
5. Voice call quality is okay but can be bad sometimes (probably related to my mobile operator, sound is good in whatsapp call and messenger call)
6. Mobile network connectivity okay but it takes time to shift from 3G to 4G :/
7. No VoLTE option by default. We have to activate it with *#*#weirdcode#*#* and sim is HD compatible message all the time (this is corrected in new update)
8. VoWiFi option isn't present. It seems that we have to activate With again *#*#weirdcode#*#* but doesn't work. With my previous P20, I have both VoLTE and VoWiFi and was very useful especially VoWiFi
9. Lowest brightness is super high to use in dark environments. Hello eye strains
10. GPS is ok but can't grab UE Gallileo signals. Gallileo is a lot more precise than GPS, Russian and Chinese GNSS.
11. No step counter
Questions
1. Have anyone has successfully used VoWiFi with A3?
2. It seems that there is a chip for pedometer but apparently not counting the steps. Had anyone has the same problem?
Cheers

Using VoLTE and VoWIFI normally here in Brazil, but I had to activate with the weird codes.

Oh no, bad call quality? I can tolerate the display and FP sensor but call quality is going to be a deal breaker.

Call quality isn't bad all the time but multiple time , I noticed that the call quality was so bad that I was obliged to guess what people were talking about. By the way, it never happened to me with P20 for almost one and half year.

Now that's weird, because there is several reports that the loudspeaker, even it's just a mono, is best-in-class. Myself I find it surprisingly loud, clear and capable, much better than some notebook's speakers for example.

Thannks for the codes, vowifi was already activated but doesn't seems to work. Do you have any notifications at your status bar for vowifi ?

Por favor, o seu funciona 4G+ ? Minha operadora é a Claro, funciona no Mi MIX 2S, mas nesse só aparece 4G!
Dá para perceber a diferença nos medidores de velocidade.
Tem como habilitar no MI A3?

the *#*# codes are counterintuitive. they need to be ran and the corresponding carrier check should be left DISABLED to always try the default volte/vowifi profile.
with the options enabled it will always try to find a specific profile for your carrier.
P.S. and after you "enable" (i.e. disable the carrier check) you also need to enable the wifi calling in the settings menu, network - advanced: wifi prefered.

When you disable carrier check for wificall, a new option will be available at phone app>settings>calling accounts>Sim1 "Name" and then wifi calling.
Also, if you like lower brightness try a new app called "screen dimmer (dims notifications too)" which dims everything.

I'am selling mine ASAP, it is destroying my sensitive eyes with stupid PWM dimming.

Audio Issues Related To The Fingerprint Sensor

I'm posting this thread as I need your help to figure out if all OnePlus 5T devices are affected by the issue:
When listening to music I started to hear some audio crackling and sounds especially when the screen was off. I started to investigate and tried different ROMs, firmware etc. but they all had the same issue. I even sent an RMA request and my device was "repaired" while still no being fixed. Then I started testing it on another OnePlus 5T and the issue was there too. So I'm starting to wonder if this is a bigger issue.
Short Issue Description:
Whenever the fingerprint sensor is active, the audio wave skips a few milliseconds which you can hear as a clicking noise.
Testing:
0) Make sure to have your fingerprint enabled in settings and do the following:
1) Best to use a sine wave generator (these fancy beep sounds) like on: http://onlinetonegenerator.com/
2) Start playing it via loudspeaker or wired(!) headphones and listen to it.
3) Lock your screen while keep playing it and unlock it with your fingerprint.
4) Start pressing the fingerprint sensor multiple times for at least 20 to 30 seconds. Do it quick and softly or hold it on the sensor for a second and start pressing it again.
>> Do you hear any distortion or unusual sounds despite the on-going beep?
I made a quick video of this issue showing that the audio output stops for a few milliseconds which leads to this issue. It is not just when unlocking the phone but sometimes when it's locked too. Pressing the fingerprint scanner just makes it easily reproducible.
(quality is bad I know, I just needed to film this quite quickly)
Do you consider this as something that's bothering? I'm in the office right now and can't test it.

It definitely is. You can notice it while simply listening to music. Pressing the fingerprint sensor just makes it easily reproducible. Test whenever you can

Thanks. Will check and see if it bothers me while listening to music if it's really an issue that is also happening on my device.

I'm just interested if more devices are affected. Please note that you have to use wired headphones as Bluetooth headphones aren't affected.
Yes!
I am able to reproduce the same. I had always heard the breaks, but have always thought it was something with the audio or network quality, but this!
I also found (a long time ago) that the cpu briefly boosts to 2.4GHz when tapping the fingerprint sensor. I don't know if it's related to OP's problem, just something I noticed; it may very well be because of 1+'s stock kernel.
Also on the YT app, when tapping or swiping on the fingerpring sensor soemthing similar to what OP said happend, but it's the video that freezes and not the audio.

Which firmware/ROM are you using? I've contacted OnePlus about this but after an RMA where they updated OOS they simply said it's fine. Now they want me to send it in again which is bs considering it's not just my device

Call quality

Hi, I have just bought Mi A2 Lite which has been already updated to Android Pie. Overall experience with phone is very good but my biggest concern is the voice quality over the top speaker when making calls over GSM network. The voice is very flat and I have the impression like anybody is talking with me from very small room when sometimes it is very hard to understand single words. The overall loudness is quite good but flatness of the sound is far away from what I have experienced on another phones. Can anyone share with me their feelings regarding making calls over this phone? Is the poor quality typical for this model or maybe it is software issue? I have this bad experience only when using Pie dialer. When calling over Whatsapp or Messenger the voice quality is quite decent so the speaker itself must be good enough.
Adroid 9 (Pie) call quality
Same problem here. Since Android 9 upgrade, call quality went down. With Android 8.1 the phone provided very clear sound and speach was easy to understand. With Android 9 sound is distorted with overdrive noises.
Sounds like someone was speaking through very lound PA system.
Waiting for Google Dialer app update.

Confirm that it purely Pie bug. Getting back to Oreo solved this issue and voice is much clear.
Thanks for info. I'm gonna wait for update anyway. I'm not making to many important calls, so can live with it for a while. Will see how long it'll take google to react for the bug...
I Can Also Confirm The Call Quality Is Not Good. I Am Experiencing Like Echo.
https://en.miui.com/thread-4734621-1-1.html
Can you guys "confirm" this issue on MIUI forum? Maybe devs will take a look on the matter.
I don't think it's MIUI issue. My phone is A2 Lite, so it's Android One onboard (suppouse to be a clean Android). There's no other Xiaomi apps than File Manager and Opinions. As other people described, no issues on other communication apps. Just Android's Dialer.

Yeah, sure.
But complains here will do absolutely nothing regarding audio issue. Mi A2/Lite (Mi A1 as well) are officially listed in MIUI forum, so it is good place for ask for fix.
I am experiencing the same issue. After updating my Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite to Pie call quality is worsened. How to fix it?
@sysios
V10.0.2.0 has greatly improved call quality. (2nd release of Pie with december security patch)
@ShadyTurtle334
It is weird, because I have that version actually:
PKQ1.180917.001.V10.0.2.0.PDLMIFJ
And call quality is still horrible. Other apps works just fine. Only Dialer app is affected.

Guys, success. I have restarted phone and everything now works.
Call quality improved after December sec update
Agreed, now it's perfect.
But, since the beginning I struggle with another issue/bug/feature.
I switched from Meizu M3 note (Android 5) to A2 Lite (Android 8 >> 9). Before, mms sending was working "normally" - meaning: when send button pressed, system started data transmission using mms APN and turned it off afterward.
Now, I must start data transmission manually to send mms (could live with it), but without data transmission enabled I don't even know that someone sent the mms.
It sucks.
Hi guys, I have the same problem (bad call quality on Pie). Can you confirm that the only solution is still the rollback to Oreo?

exactly the same here. only the standard GSM calls are miserable. other internet messaging apps such as Signal messenger are working crystal clear. Using latest Android 9 update.
The quoted below is the answer I prompty received from their global support. Quick but useless answer. So I guess I'll have to wipe and downgrade to Android 8.1 Oreo...
«I would request you to follow the below mentioned steps:
• Go to Settings >> Installed Apps >> All >> Contacts and Dialer >> Clear Data
• Go to Security App >> Block List >> Blocked Contacts>> Unblock the Contact Numbers
If the issue persists, kindly reset and update the phone by following the below mentioned steps.
I would request you to follow the below-mentioned steps to reset the device after creating the backup in an external drive.
FACTORY DATA RESET
1. Go to Settings then to Backup and Reset
2. Tap on Factory Data a Reset
3. Tap on Reset Phone
UPDATE
1. Go to Settings, then to About Phone
2. Go to System Updates
3. From here, you may update the device.
Hope the above troubleshooting steps resolve the issue. However, if the issue persists would request you to coordinate with the point of purchase for further assistance. I am sorry to inform you that as of now we haven't started selling our phones through our official global website, so we would not be able to guide you further in this regards.

TMobile startup tune

I am hopping between U1 XAA and U TMB often. I like the TMB better for quality of calls and the only thing that runs me nuts us the horrific startup jingle on the TMobile versions. Once upon a time there has been an app called 'Silent boot' that worked it's magic, but it is an old apk and it does not work on Android 10 ( sometimes it does, most of the time it doesn't. Keep reminded SD US phones are bootloader locked and can't be rooted.
On normal days , COVID-19 aside, I turn my phone off on flights ( the only times I can rest is the 2-3 hours at 35,000 feet. Then landing is a nightmare noisy startup jingle, combined with all the following messeges coming in. I ALWAYS forget to put my phone on silent before turning it off ... then putting a finger in the speaker to muffle it..
I searched for quite some time, could not find a solution. Obviously the other option is not to turn phone off and keep it on airplane mode, but I found those twice a day 'off' time is a life saving on my poor battery. I normally on two flights per day.. and driving rural areas kill the battery dead very easy.
Any solution ? TIA..

Long-time Silent Boot user, definitely disappointed that app stopped working on Android 10.
Just discovered this a few minutes ago, (System Startup Sound) seems to be working for me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=apps.infinite.systemstartupsound
Just tap "Go to Sound Page", move the volume slider all the way to the left (low). Working on both the Note 10+ 5G / OnePlus 8, no more T-Mobile jingle on start-up. ?

Does not work for me..:crying:
If you mute System in volume menu you can prevent the jingle....not a perfect solution if you use system sounds such as keyboard click etc....but it won't interrupt notifications, ringtones or app volume...

Thanks I know, but the thing is I never remember to do that.. and every time I turn the phone on it is full blown volume.. I am now looking at automate it and write my own script to kill volume before shut down, and out system volume back in after boot.

Nothing really scientific, or measurable, but when on the TMB firmware it seems to have less issues with the quality of calls. On the XAA I have areas in the house that are notorious to be where the other end will be choppy , and same caller, same location is just fine on TMB. At the beginning I was thinking this is a placebo effect. After it was consistent several times, I started to think maybe it is not a coincidence after all. Like you, I have the XAA purchased phone directly from Samsung, yet the TMB code seem a tad better. As I ststed- a user experience, no proof..

BTW, although I have set WiFi calls on, and although I have 400Mbit/sec connection, I have less issues making calls on TMobile network than on my own WiFi.. and that's where TMB is better than XAA firmware..

Proximity sensor

I didn't have any issue with proximity sensor, others say they did... Sincerely i think that they're just holding phone against their head wrong while talking...
Issue exist. Wife and son have problems with screen turning on and off. I watch them while talking. Without any movement of cell phone or head, screen turns on. So, calinorg, you are wrong.

I think I've heard somewhere that there is a slight problem with the proximity sensor but that was due to it being ultrasonic rather than infrared. I'm not sure but may be that might be the reason.
hi all,
I have a Mi 10T, Indian version(MIUI Global 12.0.5.0 Stable). I have faced this issue from time to time too.
I did something that helped, I cleaned the LED indicator light hole and ear piece opening, using a bubble gum(please watch a few youtube videos on how to do that and do not get any residue of gum stuck in). Then as said above calibrated the sensor from kernel version settings.
Before the clean up, 6/10 calls I faced this nagging issue. Post clean up, its like 1/10 calls , and mostly that one call is usually whatsapp voice call this happens with and not the google phone app.
hope this helps you guys too.
EDIT : P.S. Are people with stock MIUI dailer/phone and messaging app facing this issue too? Kindly mention your phone's ROM version, I am planning to Install Indonesia version of stock MIUI Rom for my device, to get back Stock MIUI Dialer/Phone and messaging app.
Also, I kind of have a feeling that Google phone and messaging app are not optimised for MIUI ROM and/or this device.

Him I have the very same issue.
Let's admit, Xiaomi note 8 pro is ****.
I've proximity issues and headphone connector issues.
The phone price is great, the quality is not there. Simply it's a big nightmare .
What a big disappoinment.
The issue exists for sure. What a piece of garbage is this phone. :-(
at home the problem appears when I switch the screen to 120hz and disappears at 60hz, it is the 120hz mode that causes concern the infrared sensor does not follow

Question LDAC issues

"Upgraded" from pixel 4XL. On 4XL was able to set LDAC bitrate to 909/990 in developer options and use with no issues. On the 6 Pro it is unlistenable because of audio dropouts and stuttering. Is the BT radio on the 6 pro that much worse?
You sure that the bitrate was set/fixed on your Pixel 4 XL? Never worked for me.
I am also a defender of LDAC and loved using it on my P3, then switched over to my P4 and noticed that I had to force the bitrate EVERY time I made a connection. Then, a long time ago, like early 2020, after a firmware update, developer options didn't save in that regard. Every time I went to change the bitrate and left developer options and checked again, it reverted back to the standart settings. So on my P4 XL, setting the bitrate has been broken ever since. I reported this to Google, nobody gave a **** as of now.
I'm not sure if this is also the case with the P6 Pro, I'll try it in a second, have my XM4 next to me. Gimme a few.
--
Edit: Alright, so, I just tried it out with my WF XM4 and it works o.o
It saves "Optimized for Audio Quality (990kbps/909kbps)". F*** me, finally it works. Jikes.
So, it's not grayed out for me and it retains the setting.
It also works without a problem - no audio dropouts, no stuttering.
Do you have a case? What case do you use? It is big? Maybe its **** and it's blocking the phones antennas.
Also, what headphones do you use? Do they function without problem with your P4? Maybe they broke only recently, best try them out - now, again - with your old phone.
On the 4XL I had the issue where every time I connected I had to reset the rate, but once I did I could go back in and it would still be set. Confirmed working by the marked improvement in sound quality.

I have a case, took it off, no difference. I have the Sony XM3s. Still no issue with 4XL.
Same issue on my P6P, when set LDAC bitrate to 909/990 in developer options audio dropouts and stuttering. I also checked without case, still same issue.
However if you keep the phone stable for a minute, the connection stabilizes and issue goes away, but it comes back the minute you move the phone.
I think, this may be happening with every P6P and it may be a hardware limitation/issue or software issue.
Either way it's a potential deal breaker for me.
I don't have much hope that Google will address this within the next 14 days.
My Pixel 6 with ath-m50xbt2 has the same issue.
Only when turn off screen will the connection stablized and not stuttering.

I have P6Pro and WH-1000XM4, the same problem, but it doens't work normal on 600kbps too. Better, but with stuttering too

The issue will be fixed by "late summer". cross your fingers.
If you (all) haven't already done so, try toggling the 'Disable Bluetooth A2DP hardware offload' in Developer settings. I would consistently get stutters once I turned the screen off prior to doing that..worth a try, at least
KERKEDAGAIN, does it make a sense? In theory it will make mono-audio or low quality what doesn't make sense with any bitrate...

I wouldn't recommended it for Sony WF-1000XM4 users, I use them, and doing this brought upon static at times.

Doesn't hurt to try. Androids can be twitchy... I would play with all the Developer bt options.
Can also try temporarily turning off Developer options and see if this helps.
Also network reset.

To be sure, I'm recommending trying to toggle disable on...

That's what I did. It gave me staticky feedback at times.

Interesting.. Thanks for trying, sorry to hear it didn't work for ya.
If Wi-fi is disabled then LDAC working normal on 600kbps, but 900kbls not yet. With enabled Wi-fi only 300kbps working normal.
The New February update it's out and it's focused on Bluetooth issues. Let's see if it's finally fix View attachment 5531103
Ldac 600-900 fixed after february patch!
BUT! Need to reset Network setting in "settings - systems - reset options - reset wi-fi, bluetooth and network".
After that my Sony wh-1000xm4 start to play on 900kbps without any stutters ))
