Hello,
I bought an unlocked Pixel 3XL from Swappa. I've started the phone with no sim, no wifi, and bootloader unlocking is grayed out. I've reset, started phone with the sim, and same thing. I use T-mobile for my carrier and when I open the unlock app, it says device is already unlocked.
I'm trying to unlock the bootloader, any ideas? Phone says unlocked, but unlock bootloader tab in developer options is grayed out.

It's probably a Verizon version which cannot be bootloader unlocked.

If the first two IMEI numbers are 35 your toast. If their 99 you should be able to unlock

It is 35, not 99. Oh well I guess.
Thanks!

I just received my pixel that I ordered from Google I set it up with no sim in it then I put my Verizon sim in it after it was done setting up and updating. I held down the volume down and power and it says it's lock at the bottom of the list. I thought if I ordered it right from Google it would have an unlocked bootloader. Or is what I am seeing referring to something else being locked.
Did my Verizon sim card lock it?

Its comes from Google locked. Your sim card has nothing to do with it. You can unlock it in fastboot.

I think hes under the impression that a locked bootloader is the same as being carrier locked. @chrisusa96, If I'm assuming correctly, You're under the impression that the lock image means you're phone is now locked down to Verizon? If that's the case, you're fine, it does come from Google truly unlocked for any carrier. That lock icon is for the bootloader which is a very different thing all together. Bootloader unlock and Carrier unlock are not in any way related.
But then again, If my assumption is not right, disregard me entirely.
I was referring to the bootloader. I was under the impression that it was unlocked out of the box from Google.
I see the difference between the two now. My last question is if I unlock the Google version will I get a constant warning Everytime I reboot the phone that it is unlocked?
Fastboot unlock with adb
First toggle OEM unlock
Then run unlock command
If unsure how to use adb
Just install minimal adb and fastboot.
That will get you started

Yes
Just to be clear, you unlock the bootloader using fastboot. Not ADB

I just checked apparently my phone is the 2pw2100 021-A ...I know you could root it with 7.0.. but I updated as soon as I got the phone ...is there a way to root it still ?
i believe that means its oem locked to verizon, you would need to contact them about unlocking it but im not sure if verizon will, im in the UK but from what i hear verizon wont help much

You bought a Verizon variant. With Verizon models you can't check "oem unlock" so you can't unlock the bootloader. You are stuck with a locked phone. No root.

Maybe, the people on this thread: Verizon Pixel Bootloader unlocked? by EstiR86
Had their Verizon Pixel/Pixel XL unlocked by Smail. You can also reach him via ebay: item 222913601503
thats the best, and only bet. good luck.
I'm on one of the verizon pixel 2 xl's running pie and I've tried just about every variant of the guide to unlocking the bootloader to no success. I can always switch the toggle to enable oem unlocking but when I reboot into bootloader all the commands to unlock it will fail. Does this method not work on Pie?

If you have a "true" Verizon version of the phone, you can't unlock the bootloader.

What makes it a "true" verizon model? I bought the phone a while back on amazon not realizing that I could only get a google model from the google store. I've never used it on Verizon.

A true Verizon phone can't be unlocked no matter what carrier your on.
Do you have the latest platform-tools on your pc?
If so, and the command of..fastboot flashing unlock..doesn't work, then you likely have the Verizon variant phone.
Unfortunately what that means is, that you probably have a Verizon model version of the phone. Those models are bootloader locked and you can't unlock the bootloader. Only the Google editions straight from google come bootloader unlocked.
So got a pixel 3a xl from ebay from a UK seller. I am in Spain and have no idea how the UK carriers works.
IMEI starts with 35, thats verizon right? Can I check this somehow?
Phone was sold as unlocked.
So how to unlock ? free or paying for it.
I would except a partial refund if it would be unlocked.
edit: seems it is EE UK its locked to , got a popup
Unlock carrier
Hi, you can unlock the carrier by reflashing the OS on the phone. PM me if you have further inquiries.

Really? Just got in contact with the seller and he will unlock it with EE.
But can you flash the pixel on locked bootloader? and it will get rid of carrier lock as well?
.
Yes, it gets rid of the carrier lock and it changes to the International version. Though there is another way you can unlock it and that doesn't require flashing the phone.

That requires paying for an unlock code for the phone, they are usually between 5 to 8 US$.

I would not trust this muhammad guy as he is using "sim unlock" language interchangably with device lock. If it is a verizon locked device with OEM unlock greyed out, it is my understanding there is no way to ever fix that. Verizon is the one that implemented that lock, they will not help you unlock it, even if you tell them you are a developer. They tell you to get a google pixel phone directly from google for developer purposes.
having your phone "sim-unlocked" is very different from the device being unlocked.
v12xke said:
If you have already 100% WIPED your phone, skipped through setup and gone straight to dev settings with an active Wi-FI signal and get a greyed out OEM unlock , you will likely never succeed because you inadvertently purchased a bootloader locked phone. SIM unlocked definitely does not equal BL unlockable.

But if it is a Verizon version that was able to be OEM Unlocksd and flashed to LOS like I have done, it is now unlocked? Somehow I was lucky in being able to enable OEM unlock on mine.

That largely depends on if you have a "google" or "verizon" variant device. If you can enable OEM unlocking in developer options, then you should be able to unlock the bootloader.

First, make sure that you can enable "OEM unlocking" in the developers options settings section. If you can, then unlocking the bootloader and installing roms is not that difficult provided you have a good understanding of how fastboot works:good:

Go here and enter your IMEI: https://www.verizon.com/od/prepaid/bring-your-own-device/#/checkDevice
It will tell you if it's a Verizon device, or a "NON-VZW" device

My phone is not a Verizon variant (NON-VZW), however it was bought from Verizon and cannot be unlocked. Is there any way around that? (Since Verizon says and several other IMEI checkers don't say it's a Verizon only variant).

For me, it's kinda difficult to identify now as there is no app or setting from Verizon on it, tired checking it on Verizon but their IMEI checking page is down. If yours is non Verizon, unlock oem shouldn't be grayed out by default. I'm not expert on it thoug.
I bought a NON-VZW phone and enabled OEM unlocking, but after I put my Verizon SIM and an update happened, it got grayed out before I could unlock the bootloader. Is there any way to put it back on older software? It is still marked as NON-VZW in the IMEI thing.

Maybe try taking the SIM card out, factory resetting and then see if you can enabled OEM unlocking and USB debugging. If so then unlock the bootloader before putting the SIM back in. Won't put you back on an older software but may allow you to unlock the bootloader.
