Ram Management - Asus Zenfone 5Z Questions & Answers

Out of 6gb of ram - 5.1gb is currently in use while only 480mb is cached. is this normal? I'm not using any of these apps and instead of being cached, they remain in current use. Won't it consume battery a lot?

This is my average usage I'm considering getting the 8gb ram version of the zenfone 6 if I can find it because of this.
My battery life is still pretty good tho I can squeeze about 12 hours on LTE and a full day on wifi only

Same for me too. I might replace the battery or get zenfone 6. I use heavily everyday and the battery starts dying even with schedule charging.

The battery is ok for me I'm able to stretch it to make it through my work day if I need to with the battery saver options. I'm usually streaming iheartradio and Spotify at least for 4 to 5 hours everyday with Bluetooth on that's the bulk of my battery usage. If I can ever find a zenfone 6 I can buy I'll definitely pick one up they are sold out everywhere. I wonder if the RAM would make a difference in the battery life

I recently went 36 hours on a single charge with my typical usage. Streaming Youtube, playing music through GP Music, facebook, twitter, instagram. Then add in emails, phone calls and texts.
Yeah 3000 mah battery sucks! In all seriousness you might need to turn auto brightness on or you have apps running in the background.

Not sure if this was a question or statement.. If your not rooted, root it immediately, then remove whatever bloat you have. I would also greenify everything, and that should give you much better battery life. I went from stock rooted barely getting 3 hours, to almost 6 hours after I rooted.
Try out lux for your screen auto dimming and juice defender or green power to help out.
Battery is comparable with Note 3 if you managed to disable sync when not in use. Mine can usually last one day without changing battery.

You need to do some research and understand what you can do. I have gone as long as 70hrs on a charge.

I don't buy three days almost. Was the phone sitting in a drawer on WiFi? Did you ever use it? I get an average of 15 hours at 50% brightness with mixed usage. YouTube, Netflix, gmail syncing, SMS, calls, a few games mixed in. I average around four hours screen time. I just can't see 70 hours of usage.

I had 3.5 hrs of screen time and like I said that is my record for battery life.....no synching, no wifi notifications...... I typically average over 24 hrs on battery.easily. I'm rooted, running zonerom. People that get 8hrs or less don't have their phone set up right. Plenty of info in XDA how to maximize battery time.

Itchy. Tasty.
I just had to, sorry.
I wouldn't say battery life sucks but it is definitely not what I expected. It lasts me all day without boosting, but I can't go without charging overnight, unlike my OPO. I charge my OPO every other day. The G3 must be charged every night. Not a big deal, because I am used to charging my phone every night while I sleep. But considering the G3 and OPO are essentially the same phone except for the 1440p display, that shows what the G3 battery life could have been if LG had gone with 1080p.
Battery sucks doesn't really present much of a platform for helping you. I get all day usage from my phone on a single charge over night, that's all I ask from a phone. Screen time will vary from just shy of 4hrs to my best of 6hrs. I have 2 email that sync, web browsing, bt all day with my gear, calling and texting with minimal gps usage and turn on and off gps and Wi-Fi as I need.
Post some screen shots and let us know your usage habits, are you stock or have you rooted, what apps you use frequently and what you are doing to conserve battery life. With that information perhaps we could help out some. I will also second greenify. It does help.

[Q] New Battery - Better Android System Usage?

I have an AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 4 running Lollipop. I've noticed I have been having fairly poor battery life over the last few days with Android System taking up the most usage. I purchased a spare battery for my Note 4 yesterday and I have been using the new battery with my phone. My android system usage is significantly lower with the new battery. Does this mean the older battery is defective? Or is it something else with the phone? Has anyone experience the same circumstances?
And yes, I have a SD card installed and I have factory reset my phone and wipe the cache after I installed Lollipop.

If I were you, I'd use the new battery a few days before jumping to conclusions. The Android System usage may start up again. Knock on wood that it doesn't.

Thanks for the reply. Hopefully it won't start up again. I just feel it's weird because a new battery shouldn't affect what is using the battery but rather how long the battery lasts. Isn't that right?

I think so. I mean, the only thing I could think of that might reduce ASystem with a new battery would be if the new battery didn't have NFC. Then MAYBE ASystem will go down just because the system wouldn't be detecting the NFC chip. But even then, I wouldn't expect a huge drop in %usage.
If the old battery was defective, I also wouldn't expect ASystem to run high. If the CPU were bad though, then it definitely would because the cpu may not enter deep sleep, so the phone is always technically on. (I had the happen with my old phone. Had to get it warranty replaced).
Just keep an eye on it for a few days to see if things continue to stay good.
Btw, what battery? OEM? Third party? Large capacity (like a 6400mAh battery)?

The new battery is just OEM. and thanks for your input.
So...with the new battery about 10 hours of run time and 4.5 hours of screen time (mostly YouTube). I am at 8% battery life? Is this normal?
Also here's my setup
- Bluetooth off.
- Location On - Power Saving Mode
- WiFi on and connected, look for WiFi network is On. Always connected to WiFI is on.
- YouTube @ 15% of Battery and Screen / Android System both taking up 14%.
- Screen Brightness on Auto
Is this normal or should I be getting battery life out of my phone?

I think many people report 4.5-5 hours of constant screen on time, so I think your getting normal battery life.
I usually get about 1-2 hrs screen on time, but my phone is in standby for tge rest of the time. I usually then get a day and a half of battery life (or 2 days).

SOT really depends on usage, and whilst I was one like many here that is obsessed with SOT, I've started to just use phones without really worrying about it. Plus Dash charge is a great addition (aside from having to carry the charger with you).
Used a few apps, specially Snapchat and Whatsapp. Got a screen on time of 3.5 hrs on 4G. Decent yeah. OPO had a tad bit better.

What's the stand by?
I bought it on the launch day and conducted the test the next day after a full cycle. At precisely 5 pm I unplugged the device, at 100%, Connected to wifi with brightness at 25%, with auto brightness off. The phone was at 3% the next day at 4 pm. I got about 5 hours and 15 minutes of screen on time, moderately heavy usage, the phone only lost 6% overnight. Made 15 minutes worth of phone calls, light gaming, lots of browsing and video watching. And some apps with location as well. My previous phone was a oneplus one and for my usage, it seems to be giving me better battery life.

Computer power use: 534 mAh
I'll PM the Droplr link for the battery stats and SoT screens
I've using the following:
Dark Mode active throughout
Night Mode active throughout [ I REALLY REALLY LOVED IT, so I keep it on all the time.]
Apps used - Gmail, Excel, Word, Dropbox, Apple Music, Pocketcasts, Fenix, Messenger and Whatsapp.
Data usage is split over LTE and WiFi.
Battery was at 5% as I post this
If there is any other stat you'd like to see let me know
I'm getting exactly 5 hrs of sit for the last 2 charge cycles. Completely on wifi. No sim cards for now and moderate usage with low to no gaming.

One thing I noticed about the phone is that the 6gb of free ram that is bragged is really more like 4.9 gb after a reboot and 4gb after about an hour even without using the phone and I can't seem to find any apps that are eating up the ram. can someone explain why this is the case? It doesn't seem to hinder the performance at all but I haven't tried a speed test so I'm not certain.

Wow complaining about having 4gb of FREE RAM.. Mine has a total of 3gb and you have more free then mine total. You will never use that much up and run out. If your at that much free ram out of a total 6gb then I'd say it's running great. Mine usually sits at half 1.5 or a little more free but having that much RAM you'll always be sitting at more then half free cause you'd have to be eating up more then 3gb to get to half and I've never seen a phone use more then 3gb even multi tasking. Your always going to use some, kernel, apps, etc so sitting at 4gb free is great
Under heavy daily usage I get almost a full day. Thats a lot for me. All day whatsapp, calls, spotify, bt headphones, fitbit with notifications, countless hours of facebook etc.
I'm not a heavy user. But normally (without gaming), starting from 9.30 am, I put it charging at 2 am (after a day combining 70 % under 4g+ and 30% wifi, all account I have with push sync but sure I'm also working so there's a period of 8-9 hours where I use it only to quick write some whatsapp or checking notifications but after work I usually watch anime or TV series saved from Netflix) and I reach always 4-4.30 hours of screen with 20-25% still remaining. I'm really satisfied, it's a very good smartphone. And if I miss some juice, well....dash charge is the candy

that's normal, imagine phones with 3gb of ram only having 900mb free after an hour of use with no apps open.
I have two Google accounts, Facebook (with Messenger) and WhatsApp, automatic Sync always on: the battery life is not so positive as I wish it would be given the "low" resolution of the display and other battery saving settings switched on! Google Play Services and Android System eat a lot of battery all the time!!!
i cant get more then 10hours in full charge. my average is removing from charge around 6:30AM and on 3PM, its my last 5% and back to the cord. how the hell you guys can have almost entire day!? this is insane for me.
Im on my default settings out of the box with developer option doze mode enable, automatic backup is enable, autosync on, with fb mssenger, whatsapp, skype installed. My battery would last me around 16hrs of heavy usage w/ 7hrs SOT,,,, with casual use my battery would last 21hrs tops with 5hrs sot. Overnight drain of 9% in wifi and 6% in mobile data.
I tried gaming in full resolution in my oneplus 3T (my game is Mobius Final Fantasy) and I got over 6 hours game time before I hit below 10% battery. That's crazy.

Battery life

Hello
I just received my s20 plus for a week now and the battery life just like my old s7 edge after 4 years .. 3.5 to 4.5 SOT .
Is this normal ?

I hope.. i am afraid that the device has high power consumption design that with time should only get worse.
Give it 4 days to settle down. But yes it does drain faster than s10+. I knew that before pre-ordering but I thought Samsung would have figured something out...
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
Guys this is completely normal for the phone to drain this fast, the phone is learning all your usage patterns in order to adjust the battery, use this time to go over the settings and tweak it to your liking. Also in the s10+ forum there is a battery optimisation post, go over there and apply it to your phone. Also maybe you are using the ultra high definition and 120hz, maybe start with that to tweak it.
Another thing is if you just restore the phone from a backup, this can bring corrupted settings that might be the culprits do factory reset and install all from zero without a backup.
''maybe you are using the ultra high definition and 120hz, maybe start with that to tweak it.''
thats physically IMPOSSIBLE now
I assume that you are using the exynos versions?

I had 7 1/2 sot yesterday SD 120hz
Second day, 120Hz is lovely but damn, I'm at home connected to my WiFi and it's draining like crazy, I'm worried how is it gonna look when I go outdoors to the college and will be using LTE. I'm on Exynos
I'm getting 2 hours of SOT through my day (7 am to 10 pm)
It's been a week that I've been using the Exynos version @ 120Hz RR. Battery life is way worse than S10+ on similar settings, tweaks and usage pattern.
I have charged my phone for the 2nd time and i get +- 5 hours of sot. I use everything on the phone, 120hz etc. The battery is still in the learning pattern phase...getting same battery life as I got on my S10+. I get roughly 24 hours with one charge and 6 hours is included when I sleep...The battery will get better. With my S10+ I got 24-36 hours of battery time with +- 3-5 hours sot...depending on usage...So if I can get the same or a bit better I would be very happy

I'm reading pretty bad about the Exynos Ultra as well in different but reliable sources. It's a pain to have a primary driver that dies mid-day on medium usage, that era of "unacceptable batterylife" on a flagship is believed to be over years back. I remember me behaving in an uncivilized? manner with the ones who tried to defend Exynos S9+ in every online forum when the culprit was the SoC itself to start with..
no wonder they didnt want to enable 120hz at 2K res - it would kill the battery in 1h probably

7.5hrs screen on time? How? First person I've heard that high.
I have the S20+ with the snapdragon processor. I think the battery life is very good, way better than my P4XL. I have 4 hours sot right now and have 60% left. I'm using 120 hz refresh rate. I believe it has gotten better over time, either from "settling" or updates, or maybe my imagination, haven't actually checked but some nights I go to bed after a day of light use and I'm shocked at the battery left. I unplug at 6am and at 10pm I've seen 80% battery left. That's minimal use like I said, not a typical day.
I think the battery life is quite alright, on par with my second phone (OnePlus 7 pro)
Exynos/12gb ram/120hz: stranded on 12%, so it would be around 7.5hours of SOT in full day.
Note: got the phone 3 days ago, it's still settling.View attachment 4977585

I have the snapdragon version and the battery on this thing is a BEAST!
Going on 34 hours off the charger and 7 hours of sot. I have done nothing to conserve battery. Loads of apps/accounts syncing. I am super impressed. Way better then my s10+ was.
120hz on, about mid-brightness, I'm lasting all day use with my personal usage habits. Battery life is as good if not a bit better than on my Note 10+. Snapdragon here on T-Mobile. Mostly WiFi. But it's only been about a week of use.
Can't complain at all.
ETA: Also BT always on using with my Frontier watch and Galaxy Buds on occasion.
