Initial Thoughts Thread! - Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ Questions & Answers

I am not getting mine for a few weeks sadly, so I'm living vicarious through you all...
What do you think!? Any comments on your new phone are encouraged!!
-People coming from the Note9 (like me), does it feel like an improved phone? Big upgrade?
-Those with the Aura Glow, how are you liking the color? I was torn between Blue and Glow... Went with glow because I've had a Blue Note9 and wanted a change.

Honestly it's almost there same size as the note 9 but feels much much bigger. Definitely seems faster and another with the ram bump I believe but that could just be it's a new phone.
Overall I'm happy thus far but only had it this evening to really judge so that's a preliminary assessment.
My biggest annoyances are the always on charging status and the device care widget looks washed out and hard to see.

[Q] Oh the blue hue, what to do?

I am not an SGS2 owner as of yet but in all likelihood I am still anticipating that I will be by the end of next week as that's when I am eligible to upgrade with T-Mo.
I was going back and forth between this one and the HTC Amaze but the battery life horror stories and overheating issues have pretty much scared me off from that device.
I've tested close to a half-dozen SGS2 handsets at various stores and each and every time I've been bugged and annoyed by a bluish hue that is very apparent on what should be white backgrounds. Comparing the culprit against my current phone or another model at the store really confirmed it. In every case whites were simply not white...usually very slight blue and in one instance, almost like a greyish blue. I really want to like the SGS2 and overall I do (not crazy about Touchwiz so much and the resolution is a bit of a knocker too but I found a smaller system font on the market that I tested and downloaded on one handset and it did help a little).
I found an app in the Android Market called Color Filter Service (just search on those exact words and it comes right up). Has anyone tried this or have any comments on it? This looks like it could do the trick. I know it's only .99 but if it there are any opinions I'd like to hear them. There's only 2 reviews on the market and they aren't really all that detailed or helpful. If this app works on the SGS2 I think I would really be a lot more sound and comfortable in my decision to go with the SGS2.
Finally, I think I saw that the AT&T and World version of this phone has a color mode setting, something along the lines of standard, dynamic, etc. I don't know if this has anything to do with how hot or cool the color temperature runs but I am curious if this setting might come to the T989.

Because the GS3 is that good

This morning I had a iPhone 4s, a Motorola Razr Maxx, and a Bionic at my desk. Here's my thoughts...
Motorola phones at this point need to be left out of this conversation because they're hideous next to the GS3, i4s, and pretty much any other newer high end smartphone. The screens are ugly, the UI stinks (although better with ICS), and they just don't look very good. Can you say larger than life bezels?
The i4s' screen next to the GS3 does look a lot sharper but that's because I was holding them so close. I mean the GS3 looked down right fuzzy. After backing them away from my face the GS3 came into focus and that advantage was gone. Iphone screens are so small that you need to hold them up to your face (12 inches or so). Anyway, it was fun using both at the same time. Both were fast although the GS3 was faster in most cases. Just slightly. The i4s did have smoother transitions overall, so they get the points for that. I'm hoping JB brings the GS3 that same level of smoothness because if so Apple needs to watch out, as the one advantage that iOS has over android will soon be gone. All I know is that both devices are fantastic and it's obvious now that they're both totally different when used side by side. It's as though Samsung was trying to avoid any legal issues if you know what I'm saying (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). It's a great time to love gadgets.
After using my GS3 for a few weeks there's really only a few small things I would change about it. This new version of Touchwiz is actually pretty nice. The transitions look cool and it overall feels very clean. There are times when the animations get glitchy and lag on the home screen but I'm looking past that in hopes that it's cleared up with JB. I also really like the dialer until you end a call, then it just sits there. Why Samsung, why? The other thing I would change is the battery cover. Why couldn't they have made the back feel nicer like all of the cool third party ones we're seeing from Hong Kong.
Yeah I wish our screen was a bit sharper, I can't deal with a 3.5" screen. My hands are to big for that.

Was hoping for something other than Silver

http://www.droid-life.com/2013/08/2...rizon-stores-no-sign-of-blue-or-black-models/
Looks like we won't get the Black or Blue (even though Blue was never confirmed) models. That's slightly annoying.
Yep not about to spend 500+ on a phone with a color I am not crazy about. Think it's terrible how Verizon has treated the Htc One thus far. From polls I have see looks like a 50/50 split of people who prefer silver or black. And sure enough Verizon finds a way to piss off half that group who have already waited months to get this phone.
I really wanted the blue. In the end though... It's still a One.
I don't like black phones so this is perfect for me.
In person the Silver model is cheap and ugly looking compared to what I had seen on youtube, but the Black model is extremely sleek and classy (this is my own opinion, don't get your panties in a bunch if you don't agree). If they don't roll out a black version within a month I'm just going to get the S4 again I think. I know that color seems a silly reason not to get a phone but I'm the sort of person who holds on to electronics for a very long time so this will bug me endlessly.

The black is not classy. It looks like a stealth bomber. You can't call a stealth bomber classy. The Black One is not sleek. It is hardcore, serious, and deadly. /joke
The S4 is not bad. It tried a friends today. No lag whatsoever. It was hard to reach the corners of the screen, but that's just me. Thing is, it felt extremely light. Not sure if that's good or bad.

I actually had the S4 for a week and returned it (before any development happened) and it was a great phone minus the Touchwiz stuff and lag (it DID lag at the time but that was before Samsung pushed updates out). If I got it again I would pretty much be running either stock 4.3 or Cyanogenmod. The things that attracted me to the One were build, speakers, LCD screen quality, and Sense 5 being a smooth minimalist skin compared to bloated Touchwiz. S4 in my opinion is better for screen size (wider vs skinny), repair-ability, expansion, camera, button placement, and development support (more popular=more development). First world problems eh?
Oh and yeah it was really lightweight. I liked that because I put my phones in cases so it makes it seem less bulky than perhaps a heavier phone would. Strangely it was lighter than my 2 year old Fascinate that's half its size... not sure what black magic they did to make that happen.

This whole thread is a big FWP. I don't want to buy this phone because, while it's better in almost(actually less than almost, both have pros and cons) every regard, it isn't in the color I like.
But, you're paying First world prices, so it's justifiable. I think the silver (which should really be called clear or natural) looks good in a sort of minimalist type of way.
Silver is the color of the bare metal. The black is just color on top, but the silver shows the true color of the phone.

Yeah I agree with you on that, I like the silver color of the metal but I think what ruins it for me most is the white plastic trim. I think it would have looked a lot better with a darker grey or even black plastic trim instead of white which will get dirty really easily and in the future turn a disgusting yellowish tint. For some reason in person it really looks cheap with the way it all came together, where as the black one actually looked premium. Of course, like you said it is just color so the major drawback is if you manage to dent or scratch it it'll look a lot more beat up than the silver one. I'm the sort of person to use cases so odds are mine will stay really nice... in fact I've had 2 Seidio cases since August 1st because I had false hope that they would have released it that day! :crying:

only issue I have with black is the same one I had with my iPhone 5 before I sold it - the black scratches right off to reveal the same 'cheap' silver underneath, and pretty easily. Put it on a table and slide it across, and it'll come off if the table has any texture at all...
I think the color is very important and not just because of a preference.
When watching videos you want the picture to blend in with the background. The silver sticks out like a sore thumb.
How many of you here would want an led tv with a silver frame as opposed to one in standard black?
i understand wanting that choice. to me, ive been waiting long enough, and i dont mind that visibility. honestly, i liked my white ipad more than my black iphone when i had them. also my led tv is silver - but its the thin bezel cinema screen

I've got to disagree. I've had several white phones and I never thought 'man I wish my phone was black so the video blended in.'
I'm looking at the video on the screen, not the phone. A black phone doesn't make the video any larger.
Hope the blue still comes out.
I want an announcement. What I don't want to have to wait another month and find out that they will never have black in their stores. Could be that they don't want to make one right now because they want it to sell in it's inferior color. I don't think so, and not even for profit.
Just ordered mine this afternoon. Been sitting on an upgrade since April. Was considering the Moto X but I'm sick of plastic phones and I think the screen is going to be much better on the One - true 1080p. Coming from the Dinc 4G its gonna be a little bigger but worth it for the screen. See you all in the Dev site.

[Q] From Nexus 4 to next smartphone

Hello everyone!
I've got the chance to sell my Nexus 4 and - to be honest - I'm not really sure I want to give it away. For sure its technology is not state-of-the-art, but it's still fighting its own way very well, except for some slowliness in some cases (running 5.0.2).
I was oriented towards Meizu MX4, but I'm very SCARED about the MediaTek SoC. Not for the CPU itself, but about its lack of moddability (besides the not 100% translated OS, it's a custom one and I'd like to choose whichever OS, including AOSP, in case).
Then I saw the LG G3 16 GB with a similar price (around 350€) and I saw it should be a very powerful yet not too much expensive choice.
Also, I'm a Nexus addicted since before it was called Nexus (HTC Magic) and never bought something outside that product line. I'm scared about updates, too.
May you please, PLEASE, convince me to buy this piece of hardware and software, or not? I don't want to spend too much for such devices, though I'd like it to last for at least a couple of years (just like my Nexus 4 (which is LG, too) resulted).
Thank you VERY MUCH!
I actually had the same phone, the Nexus 4, and I loved it. Super good looking on the front with the curved edges and awesome back panel with those reflective, crystal-like dots (almost looked like space!).
And yes the updates. Oh the updates. Perfect.
The only thing going bad was the battery - being irreplaceable and all, I couldn't last more than 6/8 of a day before I had to charge it again. That sucked. I basically had to get a new device which will last me for as long as the Nexus did. And here it is, the LG G3.
Seeing as the Nexus 4 was an LG device from the start, my line of thought was that they improved themselves over time. They did. 2K screen, 3000mAh battery, great camera (certainly an improvement over the N4, especially on the software) and a pretty design overall. Not as pretty as that galaxy-like back panel but hey, I gladly traded that over a replaceable battery - so when this one starts going bad, I can just get a new one.
I had the N4 for almost 2 years and I greatly enjoyed it, and I think you do too. I recommend upgrading to the G3, there's very little chance that you will regret it.
PS - try to get the 32/3gb model, it is certainly much more future-proof.
Benchmark if you are into that kind of things - h ttp :// im gur.co m/fnOl PBj
(just remove the spaces)
I too came from a nexus 4 which I still own but getting the G3 has made me realize how much of a good phone the G3 is I've only owned it 2 days it's rooted already gotta get a custom recovery now

Dumb question: if I buy the phone of color X and I change the cover, does the volume rocker and the camera color change, too, or that part remain the same color of the base? From the photos I see, the "black" cover is not really black, but somewhat greyish. While I don't dislike the white version, I'd like to put dark covers, too.
Thanks

They remain the same color browse a quickcircle case review, where they physically remove the back cover and you'll see that the buttons on the back are integrated into the phone.
As for the "greyish" color, it's actually metallic brown and looks very pretty. White looks stylish too so it comes down to your choice really.
Well, actually a dark cover with sparkling white parts is not in my tastes, while a light cover with some dark definition is not that bad... IMHO. Imagine the base body in white with this kind of cover: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51OzrTYR+JL._SY300_.jpg

Should i get this phone?

Yeah we all heard about the screen quality issues and stuff, But is it really that bad? I would love to get one coming from the og pixel xl. But do you guys recommend me getting one?
I got a P2XL 64BG black to replace my 1st Gen Pixel 128GB and overall I'm happy with my purchase. That's not to say the display is perfect, I do have the blue shift when I look at it sideways and I also don't really like the bland colors. I haven't had any issues with burn-in yet though I did install the 8.1 beta to make sure that the soft keys don't burn in. That said Google increasing the warranty to 2 years, the beta dims the soft keys and Google is promising a software update that will offer a more saturated color scheme.....so between what Google has done and are in process of doing I am not really too concerned about the display issues. Display aside it's a great phone, it doesn't get warm like my Pixel did, it's very fast, smooth, great battery life and the 3 years of OS updates is a great perk. I can't speak for anyone else but I am happy with my purchase and will be keeping my P2XL. The best advice I can offer is what others have said in other threads, go to a store and check one out for yourself then decide.
It rocks. Get it.
i love my phone. im coming from the OG pixel
all the negative reviewers are just dumb imho
I highly recommend it for fun on XDA! But it's your decision...
I love the phone too. Only grip is the fingerprint reader. Finger needs to be dry & clean. Otherwise it won't work well.
Go for it. I upgraded to P2XL from Nexus 6

I have had mine for nearly two weeks and it is absolutely stunning. Yeah I have a bit of the blue shift (to be expected on most OLED displays) that I don't mind at all, haven't seen much burn-in at all but have moved over to immersive mode via ADB until they release some additional screen fixes/improvements to try and help with it, haven't seen any black smearing whatsoever, etc. In regards to the bland colors, Google announced saturation mode that I imagine will come with the December release? This will be x amount more than the current vibrant mode or whatever it is, I believe it is +10%+, not certain on how much more saturation mode will be, if you dig more vibrant colors and all. I actually prefer, the more true-looking, duller colors but do have vibrant mode turned on (not much of noticeable difference), will play around with "saturation mode" once available but will likely stick with the duller look, saturation mode may be good for video viewing/editing and watching movies/videos.
Like the first poster said, the phone is great, does not get warm, incredibly fast and feels buttery smooth, the battery life is phenomenal, 2 years of warranty and 3 years of OS updates. Could not be happier. I almost got 50 hours out of my phone the other day, probably would have but needed to head out so wanted to throw it on charger, ended up charging it at 7% and about 48 hours off charger, granted I barely had screen on (4 hours) as it was a busy weekend where I didn't need my phone much but all in all very impressed as I have quite possibly every little battery sucker turned on on the phone. I did do some GPSing, lots of music, texting, some snapchatting, lots of Twitter feeds loading, etc. but I'd say mostly light to moderate use, impressed nonetheless.
In the end, it is your choice but I could not be happier with my purchase and would do it all over again, had I known about screen issues upfront.
EDIT: I take back the saturation mode coming in December release.....it is here and available in the November release. I will post screens to a different thread and can provide a link to it later but just thought I'd let you all know.

Yes
Disregarding screen issues that don't even bother me personally. The colors I know will be fixed either by Google or of not with root and custom kernele we will be able to fix that. The phone is amazing. If you do paranoid about the screen stop at a Verizon location and look at it even if you don't have verizon, but I don't recommend buying in through Verizon! :highfive:
I've had mine almost 2 weeks and really haven't found any reason to not love it.
I did a comparison of the screen / blue tint HERE if you want to see a bunch of side by side comparisons.
But honestly, like I've told everyone who's asked: get one, keep it a week, use it play with it, run it through your daily use, and then make the call to keep it or return it.
Nearly every aspect of liking a device is subjective to each person's individual likes and tastes.
I'd hate to see you cheat yourself out of a great device because someone else said it sucked, or had this flaw.
Get it. If you hate it, or just can't get over the blue tint, return it and move on
No one knows better than YOU what you'll like.
If you have to ask, then the answer is NO!
The device is only for self-minded individuals.

False statement. The update only sorted the colours... More saturation. Most of the issues are hardware. It's not just a few batches. You don't have to be picky to not be happy with the issues...at the high price too. It's been proven the LG p oled in most cases is sub par

Did it? It didn't provide the dimming of the home back and recent buttons to help prevent burn-in? It didn't update brightness configs? It wasn't just colors...
And yes not all batches have the burn-in or even the severe blue tinting issues. I have no signs of burn-in and compared my phone to another P2XL and my blue tinting is hardly visible when my buddies is easily noticed. He does not have any noticeable burn-in either.
I understand that a lot of it is hardware related but there can be improvements on software side to help make the screen last as long as possible as we all know OLEDs decay over time regardless. Is it sub par, it very well may be, but to the average user I dont know if they will notice it being sub par versus superb. I honestly have zero gripes with screen, it is highly objective, but so is the term "good screen".
And, as I mentioned in my post, in the end it will be up to the end user to decide if the screen is bad or not.
I love my Pixel 2 XL. It's the best phone I've ever used and that's with five years of selling phones.
The screen isn't as good as Samsungs. I wish that it was, especially considering the price tag. But the screen is not bad but any means. The blue tint is a design choice. It doesn't bother me. I would like a wider color gamut than just the RGB colorspace and the new "saturated" option just seems to make everything more saturated as opposed to just enabling super saturated colors to be displayed. I find that very disappointing. But that is fixable...
I could go on and nitpick the rest of the phone, but truly the reason to buy this phone above all others is the software. It's buttery smooth. It makes the other companies software look bit silly.
I would recommend the phone. It was otherwise perfect for me if not the screen, and the screen is not that bad especially after the OS update yesterday. I don't see any graininess. I like the natural color more (and now you can change to saturated mode), there is very slight screen burn in or image retention (which I have to look for it by downloading a screen test app and adjust the screen brightness and environment lighting to be able to see, normally I just can't see it). The worst about the screen for me is the blue tint. It was very noticeable when I first switch on the phone, perhaps I specifically look for it after reading all the comments everywhere. After using it for a week, it becomes less and less noticeable. And now in the saturated mode, the blue tint becomes the normal color I am used to, while the normal color when viewed straight on becomes a vibrant and saturated one that everyone else wants.
However, I agree with others that you can go to a verizon store and have a look yourself. And buy and try for a week then decide whether you want to return it.
