Hi everyone,
I bought my new Desire two days ago, and im noticing a really fast battery drain.
I had a Hero before, and although it had a smaller battery, i would charge it every two days.
When i check tha battery usage, i can see big percentages in cell standby, phone idle and android system. (Its where the percentages should be really low imo..) Things like display, bluetooth etc that were supposed to drain more my phone's battery have much lower percentages..
Maybe all this comes from the snapdragon cpu??
I also have 3g off, always on mobile switched off and brigthness to a really low level (although i think amoled displays dont drain the battery that much)
My battery will last one day the MOST..
I know that the new battery has to be charged a few times before it has its full potential, but i think that somehow battery is getting drained..any tips???
Thanks,
T.
I to have this same issue if anyone has any ideas on this would be great

You just need to relax
My Desire couldn't get through even one day of usage when I first got it. Several things contributed to this:
1. The battery is not fully conditioned
2. The device is new so I want to play with it all the time. I'd turn it on randomly for no reason whatsoever.
3. I use several widgets that requires updating just because of the novelty (ie, Friendstream, News, Twitter, Stocks, Weather)
Now, I go through about 60-70% charge per day which is fine by me. The only things that have changed is this:
1. The battery has gone though several recharge cycles
2. I only turn on my device when I really want to do something on it.
3. I no longer keep many of the widgets that requires updating and for those that I do keep, I make it update less often.
Eg, Updating your weather every hour is not necessary. Every 3 or 6 hours makes more sense.
Eg. Rather than having your Twitter or Friendstream widget on your homescreen, why not just have a shortcut that goes directly to the application and then set it to sync on launch? It's better than having your widget update when you're not even looking.
Also get an app like battery indicator to give you a numeric readout of your battery life left. My android battery indicator was in the red yesterday and complaining I had to recharge, but battery indicator said I had 12% left and I got 30mins more constant music playing out of it before I got to work and it was still on 5%.
when the battery is running low - you get a button to show battery usage stats.. can you get these through some of the widgets or a comparable app from the market?
almost every update is set to to once a day, or every six or eight hours...so i dont think that the updates drain the battery that much..
its just weird that the most battery usage comes from call standby, phone idle, or android system..
mine was the same, i found its due to sense & all the background updates. currently running helix2 homescreen & now I only go thru abt 50% battery each day & that includes 2 hrs of music each morning.

alright i know this seems stupid but remove all your task killers, i got rid of mine this morning and my battery has been fine normally by now i would have plugged my phone in for a juice up, but not today i had bluetooth on by accident all morning and by the end of the morning it was still at 70% yes i know it sounds stupid but it actually helps
There many interesting suggestions posted here and like most i've been absolutely hammering the battery on my handset simply because its a new and highly entertaining/useful device.
Here's some of my findings...
The battery/app usage screen can be quickly accessed by pressing the menu button on the home screen, selecting settings and "about phone". It helped me nail down some of apps causing excessive drain.
Much like the iphone and any other high powered smart phone, high screen brightness, wireless LAN, bluetooth, 3G and the GPS receiver all take its toll on the battery. One of the biggest drainers is the GPS receiver so use it sparingly, I initially had it on permanently for some of the maps functions but the battery was lasting about half a day! Sadly i've noticed the radio is also a bit of drainer, which is a shame because it makes a nice alternative to MP3 playback.
Data updates and notifications again much like the iPhone have a surprising impact on battery life so set them to manual or long intervals.
In summary, learn as quickly as possible to get the most out of your smart phone by balancing out the hardware and software options.
As a sidenote, I was previously an iPhone fan but this handset has really changed my opinion of how a smartphone should really be. The combination of excellent hardware, an OS thats clearly designed from the ground up for mobile use and an ever growing (open) software base, will in the long term win over Apple's over analy retentive ethos! Top marks also to HTC for their sense UI and application suite, it works on top of Android almost as if it was always part of the OS itself and I just love the integration of social networking features....leaves the iPhone in the dust!
I have noticed that Turning off the Data Connection helps a lot.
Last night I turned data off, before I plugged my phone in for charging. In the morning the battery was showing MAX power. Where normally in the morning would be 97%, because charging stops once the battery is full.
I am still experimenting with all the Apps & Widgets that turn data access ON/OFF, but my conclusions so far, just get a simple widget from the market, and keep data connection off, until you need it.
There is an app that turns data connection off once the screen goes off, but if you download something or wait for something to load and the screen goes off, data will also be switched off which is not what you need.
Phone Awake for last 4 hours
I'm trying to figure out why. Media Server is using 30% of battery and phone 17% (i haven't used the phone since last charge). You can also see the phone is awake for the past few hours - since I left for work this morning. All I did was use Google Music. Not seeing running apps that would be causing this - I don't use FB or Twitter. Any and all thoughts appreciated.
Lol, google music will keep it awake.
This also adds to the mediaserver ticker.
I already swiped that away once I showed up at work, but the phone remained awake for a couple of hours after that. I did not have the same issue when I was on 4.0.4 - I wouldn't always swipe away music and there wasn't a battery issue.

Well then I'm going to need screen shots from "Better Battery Stats" or a similar app for further diagnosis.
SOMETHING kept you awake that whole time. But just saying you were awake hardly gives enough information.
P.S.
FYI: The Recent Menu in ICS doesn't really kill a task. It removes the background process...but then tells the application "hey, we just killed your process...if you're not cool with that, feel free to start back up." This way things like email will still sync your mail for you and such. You actually have to go to the app info and Force Stop the application if you don't want it continuing to run.
I've used 40% of my battery, with 15 apps open. But, the screen doesn't show any of those apps. I mean, Android OS isn't even there!
This weird lack of battery usage happens every once in a while, but I don't know exactly what causes it. Usually, it's has a dozen or so entries. Any ideas?
I don't know if GSAM is simply not reporting it right but since I got my Exynos ultra GSAM is indicating AoD is my highest battery drainer by far, every single day (phone is turned off overnight so it has had multiple reboots and nothing changes). See attached 3 screenshots which show the typical stats I am getting. Any ideas??
In addition to that, every time I reboot the phone, a minute or so after rebooting, it opens the sim card settings screen all by itself, no messages, no errors, just an ok button at the bottom. I have no clue what it wants me to do. It does it every single time I reboot it. I press ok on the bottom of it and it closes that screen and then continues as normal. I have one sim card and one SD card and both seem to be functioning fine (the first time I put the sim in, it did not read it so I had no mobile signal, I took it out and checked it was seated properly in the tray, put it back in and it has read the sim ok ever since so I don't think it is related to that).
On my S20U Exynos GSAM doesn't work at all... Always shows "used 0% in 0h0m" and it doesn't track anything.
I just tried turning off AoD and now I get the same thing but from "com.samsung.android.app.routines" which comprises of packages System UI, Always On Display, Bixby routines which I have already turned off), Sstem UI (again), and LED Cover Service (which is useless to me, I do not use a case).
No idea what is going on.

As soon as i get mine from Vodafone, I'm going on a major debloating session!
Solved it. I was using the default animated lockscreen wallpaper with the bubbles on it. Noticed in my screenshots of gsam it was saying "video" was on the entire entire duration that the AoD was on. Assumed this might be related to the wallpaper so I switched it to the same one but the static version and suddenly AoD is no longer showing as stupid high battery drain in gsam.
I am also no longer getting the sim card issue. I doubt that was related to the wallpaper, it was probably something else I fiddled with that seems to have resolved that!
GSAM's reporting is buggy on the S20U so far.
It will often put one of my random unused apps at #1 with a ridiculous number like 90%, even if they are deep-sleeped.
Unfortunately, none of the big battery monitors seem to be compatible either (BetterBatteryStats has fallback to boot problems etc).

I wasn't aware that Accubattery Pro or GSAM fully worked on Android 10 , last time I checked they didn't .

They seem to work now and yes, I am seeing the same issue (AOD consuming a lot) despite AOD being off. I now package disabled AOD and will keep an ee on it. I am also using the animated stock bubbles, as I quite like them
Checked after posting, indeed disabling the package did not seem to help - I now switched to the one and only wallpaper - pitch black
I know this will be almost impossible to solve with suggestions, but some of my notifications don't come through until I unlock my phone. Most notably WhatsApp. I've turned off all battery optimisation options, removed it from the sleeping apps list, allowed background data and turned off data saver. Still have the same issue.
I have naptime installed so turned that off as well.
What's strange is that a few days ago all my notifications started coming through as normal for a few hours, and then stopped again.
I know the only way to solve this is probably a factory reset, but with loads of tweaks I've gotten it so my battery life is amazing. Leaving it overnight it drains around 3% and depending on how I use it I get around 8h of SOT with 50% battery left so I don't really want to factory reset.
What launcher are you using?
I feel your pain with factory resets.
There needs to be a backup settings to cloud so you can easily restore them after a reset or even a change of phone.
I understand your frustration with this issue, I experimented it as well when I started using my device, back then I did not fully knew about all the battery optimization settings, but, when trying to get all the notifications right, I stumbled upon an app named PNF-no root, which is meant to fix the push notifications from sms, email, whatsapp, etc, I tried so many things, that I honestly can not say if this PNF solved the issue, but in the end my notifications became normal, so, I kept using it, you can give it a try, that is, before you reset your phone, it might help
Do you at least move your phone? Because a lot of apps, to bypass the system's optimisation that put apps to sleep, is that their wake up workaround is gyroscopic based.
That's why WhatsApp and such use a lot the sensor while it has nothing to do about in the first place.
If a battery monitor works for you, you can check that for WhatsApp.

Thanks I have installed it and will see if that works.

Yes I've got it on me all day. It's never left anywhere for extended periods of time.

I've just installed a push notification tester app and my phone goes into doze immediately once I lock my phone and the screen turns off it seems.
If I request a notification, it comes through with the phone unlocked but if I set a delay of a few seconds and lock the phone before it comes through, nothing will happen until I wake my screen up.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
I worked out what the problem was!
I have a VPN that is set to disconnect when my screen turns off to save battery. At the same time I enabled the Android setting that blocks all connections without VPN. Of course when the screen turns off and the VPN disconnects, my phone was blocking all outside connections, hence me not getting any notifications.
Well, I am glad you figured it out
