Installing Pie OTA while rooted. - Moto G6 Play Questions & Answers

Hi I have a virgin mobile Moto g6 play. I recently rooted it with magisk and installed twrp. I just got a notification that pie OTA is ready however I know it might brick if I install the OTA. What is the best way to go about installing it. Do I have to manually reflash stock Oreo in order to update or is there another way? Thanks for your help.

Uses the Lenovo Moto Assistant. Remembering that the G6 Play stock rom will be installed on your device. That way, there will be no more root (however you can install later) and the memory will be formatted

Just reflash stock firmware and don't root. You cannot install updates from ota once you root

I just downloaded the full pie firmware from mirrors, flashed with RSDlite (servicefile). Rebooted bootloader, flashed TWRP. Boot to TWRP, flash encryption disabler and magisk.
Still unencrypted, all is well.

Just download the updated firmware from Lolinet and Flash it without erasing data

Update my rooted phone

My unlocked and rooted h815 is running v10c-xx-eu and a custom recovery (twrp)
It run xposed and some cool module
There is an update for me
V 10 d
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2V...p=docslist_api
Can I ota update, or maybe I should use the pcsuite? Will I lose any data during the update? Is it safe?
Thanks

There's a flashable zip here which contains the stagefright fix, meaning it's the latest update, even though it has a different version name. It's from the Taiwanese (?) or whichever other version of the h815. Works on our international unbranded phones.
DON'T TAKE AN OTA
No, you can't update your phone wit ota if you have root. Is there twrp available for h815?

I was in the same case. This is what I did:
I updated my rooted 10c (locked bootloader) to 10d (stock kdz image) with LG Flashtool.
After reboot, I switched off the phone BEFORE first setup.
Then I used the command tool to flash a rooted 10d.
I didin't loose any app, setting, or whatsoever...:good:

Not able to install Os 3.2.4 update(india) for rooted device.

I live in india. When I update my device via system update, 270 mb file is getting downloaded but while installing it loading TWRP recoveey mode and on rebooting os version is still in 3.2.1. My device is rooted. Is there any specific flashable zips for indian version available or please guide me if any other solution is available. Not able to find specific solution. I dont wont to loss datas for this small incremental update
you have to be unrooted and on stock recovery to flash an OTA.
you can also download signed firmwares from oneplus forums which can be flashed through twrp but i think you'll have to download the whole firmware.
What ^said, if you are rooted you can flash the whole firmware using TWRP, all you need to do is flash SuperSU afterwards.
However, i was rooted when I got the OTA for 3.2.4, it told me I was rooted and made me download the whole firmware, I flashed it in TWRP them SuperSU and I was golden.

No data loss on my end. It treated the flash like an OTA, it booted itself into recovery(TWRP), flashed and rebooted.

OP3 Official update installation

So I'm running OOS 3.2.6. which is rooted. In the software update it shows 3.2.7 (1.3GB) available for download but it also says "Root detected, downloading full upgrade. Note: your device will be unrooted." So if i download and install this will it work ? Also, whats the best way to install official updates on a rooted OOS ?
You need clean install of oxygen before you can update regardless, just have to reflash su again afterwards and any kernels xposed you use.

You can easily install it, but after the download su will be removed, so you will have to reflash it.

I'd recommend flashing stock recovery before downloading the OTA update as twrp "sometimes" fail to flash OTA updates. Also flashing the 1.3 gb full update will remove your root. You'll have to flash supersu again for root. And you'll have to do this everytime an OTA comes.
The best way to install official updates on rooted phone is to download the patch only file for 3.2.7 and flash it via twrp. The patch file will be around 40-50MB and it is available somewhere in the XDA threads. Search for it.

Best way is to download OTA update from oneplus forum instead of complete ROM and just flash update

I did try that for the 3.2.7 update. Dirty flashed the OTA patch but it didn't seem to work. It's still 3.2.6

rooting and OTA?

hi all
assuming that i've flashed TWRP + rooted the phone
will i still be able to update the phone via OTA updates?
as this does not work on samsung phones once KNOX is tripped
i was wondering if it would be the same on oneplus devices
your input is appreciated. thanks!

Short answer: No. Custom recovery can't process the OTA update. There's another thread talking about this topic here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/help/root-update-ota-t3712615
If you want the latest updates Funk Wizard usually posts their full zips (not small OTA zips) on XDA (just search in the 5T section) and OnePlus usually has them under the device support page.
I've not tried it myself but I heard once you root and go to software update section oneplus will detect your root and instead will download a full OTA zip which you can then dirty flash in your custom recovery (TWRP) without any issues. of course the flash will remove root and then you will need to flash root zip file to gain root again.
Well, actually I downloaded latest OTA (4.7.4) over wifi and then updated phone while rooted and with custom recovery (oficial 3.2.0 I think). And it worked! I lost root in the process (I rooted again later), but otherwise phone was updated and it was done via custom recovery. So far, I don't have any problems, but not sure if any problems will come later.

wow for real?
so if you're rooted. it will not download small zips of OTA but instead the full sized OTA?
then we can choose to flash in TWRP instead?

Rooted P2XL with stock recovery

Hey everyone, I have a pixel 2XL rooted with stock recovery (and stock firmware).
I was wondering if I can get OTA updates ? I thought I could receive them and install them (and then re-root of course), but I still haven't received the March OTA yet.
Thanks!

You'll likely get the notification, and it might even download, however, it won't install. But no biggie, you can either fastboot the monthly updates, or flash the OTA zip in twrp. Either way, you'll still have root it again :good:

Thanks, but I thought the whole point of keeping the stock recovery is that I could install OTA directly ?
In that case I should probably flash TWRP.

Stock recovery yes, however, root is the ota killer as well :good:
There was a moment that flashing twrp would brick the phone and that they made it where you couldn't flash twrp anymore
Looks like they found a work around
If you accidently flash TWRP to your device using fastboot instead of temporarily booting the image, you will need to download the latest factory image for your device and reflash the boot image.
