For the most part the Pie update has been unremarkable - with one very large exception that is driving me absolutely batty.
Since the update happened (Bell-LG G7) - if my device is connected to a bluetooth device - I cannot give voice commands through Google Assistant.
Google assistant comes up but when I talk it just sits there - I would assume blinking at me internally like my daughter does when I piss her off.
It appears to me like it deactivates the phone microphone and is not receiving audio - where it did before.
I have tried multiple devices, cars, speakers - I erased all the existing pairs.
Quite frustrating especially when I am driving - if I want to navigate somewhere - I have to look down - turn off bluetooth - set the destination, then turn bluetooth back on. If I am cooking something and listening to music through a speaker - I have to turn off bluetooth, "Set timer for 10 minutes", then turn bluetooth back on.
Has anyone run into this and found a solution?
I managed to fix this today - Settings/Google/Voice -> Turn off Bluetooth Audio Recording
Handsfree operation back to normal.

Running a bone stock OP3, non-rooted, no mods, on the Community Build. Since the latest update, my BT audio is weird.
I pair my phone to my motorcycle helmet. Its a Shoei GT Air with a Sena 20S Comm system installed. It's a very nice unit.
So what happens is that when I push the button on the comm to activate Google Now, so that I can speak to my phone and tell it to dial, get directions, play music, etc... No matter what volume level I set my phone to, or the headset, the "beep" and "Ok" that Google Now speaks when you activate it, blows out my eardrums. It is like WAY high volume, 5x as loud as the music or anything else. I have gone through the comm system settings and there is nothing in there to mess with. I also notice that the volume of Google Now only goes that high when the screen of the phone is off. If the screen is on, then the tone is the same level as whatever music is playing, etc...
If I turn the screen off and the music is at a normal listening level and I hit the button to make a call or fast forward to the next some, that damned Google Now tone is back to ear shattering levels...
I am convinced that it isn't the comm system, because a google search shows similar issues with Android phones and BT over the past few years...
Another weird thing, is that when I turn on and pair the comm system and I hit the button to activate Google Now, if I do it 5 or 6 times in a row, it will eventually revert to normal audio levels, the same as the music or navigation... But when I turn off the comm, then the next time I turn it on I have to do it all over again...
Very annoying but I an convinced that it isn't the comm system. It seems to have started last week when the new Open Beta came out and I installed it.
Now, I have unpaired, deleted and repaired the connection, I have wiped cache and stuff, but I can't seem to get this to work right.
Any ideas?
It has to do with how Bluetooth handles its datastream.
Bluetooth has very limited bandwidth, so it has to allocate based on the situation. When streaming music from your phone to the BT device, it can dedicate the entire bandwidth to the unidirectional stream. However, if you need to use the helmet's mic, then BT has to use the same limited bandwidth to stream data in both directions. This is why BT devices have notable audio quality degredation when used to make calls.
When your screen is on, Google Assistant/Now will acutally use your phone's mic to listen for commands rather than your BT's mic, which means that it does not have to change protocols and reduce audio output bandwidth.
To address your issue with Google Assistant/Now's increased volume, try to place a call while your helmet is connected to your phone and reduce the volume while in call with your phone's volume buttons. Hopefully, the volume change will stick when your helmet uses the same two-way protocol when using the voice assistant.
Try:
Developer options -> disable absolute volume
Tried that Developer Option, made no difference. It's clearly something else going on under the hood. Other Android phones have had it over the years when connecting to BT devices... I guess I will have to just live with it.

Phone is a Samsung S21 Ultra running Android 11. Pretty sure it's not a phone issue as I've had this issue wth other phones but can't remember how I fixed it. I am not running Google Android Auto app. My phone connects to my car through bluetooth and phone functions work perfectly - I can make and receive calls through voice command and my contact list is available. Two issues I'm having concern sound from the phone speakers. Sometimes I have to use Google maps through my phone because the navigation system in my car isn't updated. Google maps works except there is no voice guidance from the phone speaker as normal (voice guidance works when not connected to the car). There is also no voice guidance from the app through my car speakers. UPDATE: I just discovered a setting in Google maps to "Play voice over Bluetooth" so maybe I'll try turning that on and see if that works. My second issue is a sound issue as well, but through YouTube. Sometimes I'm a passenger in the car with my phone connected through BlueTooth to make and receive calls, but if i try to play a YouTube video there is no sound through my phone (or my car) speakers. If I could get it to play through my car that would be optimal, however I'd be fine with just having YouTube through my phone like it used to. I'm pretty sure last time this happened it was an app, like Android Auto, or Google Auto and when disabled things went back to normal (sound playing through the phone) and that's why I haven't connected Google Auto so far. It could be a BlueTooth setting but I just don't know. Any ideas or suggestions appreciated!!
Hey guys, pretty sure a lot of people out there are using a smartwatch along with their Pixel so maybe someone can help me with this: when my Galaxy Active 2 smartwatch is connected most of the time I can not use voice input with Google Assistant / search. When I wake up the Assistant by long-pressing power the device starts listening but apparently can't hear me. When I disable Bluetooth or power off the watch everything's working just fine.
The weird part is this though: most of the time the watch is connected, a Bluetooth icon with two dots on the left and right can be seen in the status bar, but not always! And only when the icon is NOT there, while the watch is STILL connected and fully usable, voice commands DO work! What on earth is going on there?
Same thing with the camera app: when the watch is connected and the icon is there, the cam app tells me a Bluetooth microphone is connected. When the watch is connected and the icon is NOT there, the app doesn't tell me. With the cam it is not a problem either way though because here I can choose what audio source I wanna use, while in the Google app I can't.
Any ideas?
It seems that your Galaxy Active 2 gets recognized by the P6 as a Bluetooth microphone capable device, ergo it won't use the in-build phone microphones.
Does it have microphones, by the way?
You can always change the system "primary" source of a microphone/sound source by going into the Sound menu (press volume rocker, press on three dots, change there or go into See more).

Yeah I'm looking for a way to do that, change primary audio source, but I don't see any options for that in the sound or any other menu...
I'll add another bug to the list.
When a watch capable of making and receiving calls (Huawei Watch GT2 Pro) is connected, initiating a phone call from a BT headset/earbuds starts a phone call through the headset, but as soon as the phone call connects, the audio switches from BT headset to phone internal speaker.
You have to disable the "phone" function of the BT settings for the smartwatch to get this to work properly.
This didn't use to be the case, so it's clearly a new bug either in P6P or Android 12.
My P6P (US Unlocked) no longer plays media via bluetooth in my car. It just decided to stop suddently (while playing). Calls are still fine.
Things I tried:
- Bluetooth On/Off (On the car and on the phone)
- Unpairing/Pairing
- Reset Network Preferences on the phone
- Tried another phone with the car (works fine)
- Enabled/Disabled the bluetooth media profile (kept the calls and contacts sharing)
- Paired other bluetooth speakers to the phone and they work fine.
The phone seems to think that audio is playing and so is the car, it's just silent. I'm on the December update.
Any thoughts?
Are you by chance having this problem with SOUNDCLOUD? It's been trouble since my Pixel 2 & 3XL / Android 11. And I can get it started with force stop + clear cache, but it is a pain!

Nope, it's Youtube music, pokecasts and Google maps. I suppose it's everythings except calls.

I've had a similar issue since getting the P6P. Usually it's (randomly) when I try to skip/restart a song or when the song ends the phone will still think it's playing, but the display for the car will show it's paused so audio will stop. To get it playing again I have to turn the phone screen on and press pause then play and it'll start playing normally. As you mentioned, only an issue in the car. No issues with any other bluetooth devices.
I haven't been able to get to the bottom of it, but I updated to the December build last night hoping that might fix the issue. Haven't been anywhere yet today to see if it worked, but your post is giving me doubts now lol.
Edit: Just to add, this is playing music locally from storage with the Retro Music app.
Since the December update i have the same problem, it will connect to phone but will disconnect and not reconnect to play media
On the December update. Was in the car today playing all my media. Iike Spotify and local music and works like a charm. Sounds awesome in my Mazda 3 through Bluetooth. Also same call signal as before more or less. Right now at least is good....but haven't left my area as it's the weekend. LOVE MY P6P!
More things I tried:
- In Developer Settings, changed Bluetooth AVRCP to version 1.3, 1.4 and 1.6.
- In Developed Settings, disabled hardware A2DP.
Still no dice, maybe I should go for a factory reset? Man this phone is weird
Yeah my bluetooth headphones and my home theater amp do not skip a beat, but my car keeps cutting out the music, only just started happening, slightly after decmeber update, so I think they pushed other updates (playstore) which caused these issues. Rebooting the phone fixed it, but nothing else including mentioned in the OP repairing the phone to the car, seemed to make it slightly better.
I too have also noticed the similar issue where the music just stops for no reason, and the phone app thinks its still playing, phone reports it's still connected.
For the OP, if you rock the volume keys up down and up again does it change, beause I did have mine at some point force to zero volume.
Update, it scould be related to temperature because in the morning do not seem to have the same problem, only in the afternoon, temp about 30deg C

I tried to rock the volume buttons on both the car and the phone and it doesn't seem to change anything. Both the car and the phone actually think that music is playing (as if it was on mute) and the progress time is always in sync.

Nope, It was actually fixed after factory reseting the car's headunit. Weird but at least it's all good now....

Hi mate, i had same issue, installing android 12L beta 3 fix all my problems, battery is awesome, fingerprint fast, animations smooth like butter....give it a chance and try, maybe fix all your problems.
I know it's a long shot but you should check the settings for automatic do not disturb. I had that happen when the phone realized I was driving and it drove me nuts. Uncheck and mystery solved.
Now if someone can tell me why at completely random times and within a call the device switches back to phone speaker or watch Bluetooth while on an Android auto phone call I'd be appreciative.

Try disabling a2dp hardware offload in the developer settings, fixed all my bluetooth issues.
I'm on miui 13 and I have annoying issues, the device's bluetooth which unable to auto connect with car's head unit. The only way out is to unpair then pair them again. That being said, if bluetooth turned off, it can auto connect as long as car's engine still on. That did not happen to miui 12.5 which rapidly auto-connect. Anybody has any idea how to fix this?

I also have this problem. With iphone works properly.
I managed to get it fixed by putting the car audio in bluetooth connection mode, go to bluetooth app then toggle allow fullscreen app. In connect state it will disconnect then reconnect. In our case, it'll force connect to nearby previously connected device. That leaves another issue, which is media info won't update. So we kinda stuck with first song info or podcast title, then it won't refresh. Probably due to xiaomi policy to limit data transfer or simply unresolved bug. Luckily I have Samsung device which I use most of the time in this regard.
