Lineage 16.0 Boot Loop on OP3T after OTA - LineageOS Questions & Answers

Hi people,
i am having trouble updating my device the last couple of days for which i would like to kindly ask your support.
I am using twrp 3.3.1.0 alongside with latest stable version of magisk and i should also mention that my device is encrypted with an unlocked bootloader.
Before flashing los 16 i had updated my device to OOS 9.0.4 (so i have the latest firmware available.)
So, i installed a nightly build of los 16 and the next day when an update became available I checked the los updater, downloaded the ota update and restarted my device to complete the update.
After the update was installed (which didn't generate any errors) my device rebooted but instead of launching android it suddenly rebooted in twrp mode.
I didn't manage to find a solution that could help me boot android so I decided to format, wipe and reinstall los and recover my apps.
The next day a new nightly build became available (20190709) which I installed and voila...boot loop again.
I installed los 16 in the past with no issues at all and decided to go back to oos as soon as OOS9.0.4 was released.
Now that i returned to los builds i have this issue which is not welcome at all
I decided to do some troubleshooting..... I have just installed the latest update with no issues at all but i kept my device unencrypted.
Obviously the root cause of this issue is applying an update while having the device encrypted. (a problem which i never had before)
So the question is, what am i doing wrong?

I don't have this device myself but, have you tried to obtain some support and guidance within the following Official LineageOS 16.0 thread that's specific to the OP3/3T device?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3866517
Good Luck!

Unless asked to do so, PLEASE don't PM me regarding support. Sent using The ClaRetoX Forum App on my Apple Macintosh.

I have a poco f1 and i was having the same issues with the ota update of los16. My problem was the ANXcamera magisk module that was causing the bootloop. I disable the module before an ota update and after the update I enable it.

[SOLVED] Can't go back to OxygenOS from /e/OS

Hello everyone,
A few weeks ago, I bought a reconditionned OnePlus 5T and installed /e/ on it. Now, I would like to install back OxygenOS.
My problem is that I can’t manage it.
As I couldn’t access to recovery (TWRP) anylonger (don’t know why, maybe something to do with the fact I flashed the 5.1.7 firmware a few days ago, I don't have a clue), I flashed an early Blu Spark one (3.2.1 as the 3.3.x ones won't work on my device). And it worked, I can access recovery through this one.
But when I try to install any OOS zip, via recovery Install menu or by sideloading it (downloaded from the OP website (the most recent one, or from the mirrors referenced on this xda forum, I tried several zips but don't really know which one is really relevant), it fails.
And the only thing I can do is installing back /e/. I tried several ways of doing it, following several guides but even the ones for the ultimate guide available on the One Plus Forum won't work (can't make it recognised by any device manager, maybe the fact that I'm running Ubuntu and not Windows).
So that, for the time being, I’m stuck with /e/OS (based on a LineageOSrunning Android 8.1).
There surely is a step or a file I missed, but which one... Any idea anybody ?
I finally got it working. Through the*********** 's guide.

Hi !
Im interested in going back to OxygenOS from /e/os because the new builds are on android 11, and my current /e/os build is on android 8.1
The idea is to get OxygenOS back, upgrade using OxygenUpdater, and then install de latest android 11 /e/ build.
So what was the name of that guide ?
Thanks

WARNING Miui 11 OTA update breaks Mi Max 3 root

If I am in a class of 1 in terms of rank stupidity please feel free to delete this post. :silly:I got sick of the updater nags. With a couple of previous Xiaomi phones I got away with finally saying yes to the OTA update which would inevitably fail after which the nags would stop for a good long while.
Not this time. I now have Miui 11 (which I did not want and which has a completely broken feedback function, btw) but lost root, magisk, and exposed.
I should also note that another Max 3 user posted here that permitting the OTA update bricked their device, so I guess things could be worse.
About to see if I can re root using the same method as before the update.
Sorry if I wasted anyone's time on the blindingly obvious.
Update: The Miui 11 OTA update completely broke screencasting on my phone. While previous updates crippled native miracast you could still use it within apps such as media players prime video etc. Not anymore. The new casting and widi settings see devices but do not connect successfully while apps with casting ability see no devices at all. If I can't get around anti rollback I'll have to buy a new phone.

Don't worry about anti-rollback unless you go back to rom that has no anti rollback. I go from miui 10 global to miuieu 11 P beta to miuieu 11 Q beta then back to miuieu 10 P stable. Now I settled on miuieu 11 P stable, yes miui 11 Q is very buggy. A few of my app don't work properly.
[Fix] Root on latest MIUI 11 build !
Just update Magisk Manager to 20.2 !
What's with a screen when charging, it keeps turnin on? Happens after MIUI 10 install...
Since the first version of Android Q, I could never do it Root, I can't make Magisk work, whatever I do.
I install it without problems, but when restarting it is not installed, I never have root.
Try 20.1 and 20.2, it still doesn't work.
I have a Mi Max 3 6/128
I installed the latest Miui 11 OTA update last night - taking a full Orangefox backup beforehand. After reboot, the phone was full of ads suddenly and it took me a while to figure out that root had been removed. I soon discovered that Orangefox had also been removed and replaced with a clunky-looking version of TWRP. I reflashed Orangefox and Magisk - coming back to recovery inbetween-times and it booted fine but the ads were still there so I tried to install Xposed via Magisk and that seems to have pretty much soft-bricked it. I can get into Orangefox where it said 'No Rom' which didn't seem like a good sign. I tried to re-flash the full backup I'd made with Organgefox yesterday (and this not really understanding Orange fox that well) but that hung at 'System image' - so I tried to flash without that and that succeeded but it's still totally bootlooping.
I'd very much appreciate some advice:
1. The Orangefox backup I made was with all the boxes ticked - i.e back up everything. I have the dim idea that trying to simply restore all of this won't work (it certainly doesn't seem to work). What parts of the full backup should I try to restore?
2. If I install the latest Global Miui 10 ROM - which is still Android 9 - using the Miui repair tool, will this brick the phone because of ARB? Or is it safe to do this?
3. Will dirty-flashing the latest Miui 11 rom via OrangeFox likely make something I can at least boot up and get some data (it turns out that 'SMS backup and restore' hasn't been working for weeks so I don't have a pile of work texts that I really wouldn't like to lose)?
4. Any other suggestion most gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
(Thinking about it, this thread is for the OTA breaking the MI Max 3, not my particular woes with restoring an Orange Fox backup - so, with apologies, I'll post in the Mi Max3/Orange Fox thread.)
PS: Flashing the OTA again fixed it, short term: no root is better than no phone.

SM-T800 - Lineage OS 14.1 OTA Updates Failing

Hey all,
Just updated my tab S to lineage 14.1. Its really smooth running! See my previous post on this here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/help/rooted-t-800-wifi-model-looking-to-t4101571
However I can't seem to install OTA updates at all. I don't even get the device booting into TWRP as others have reported (on different devices) when they try OTA updates to the OS.
(if it is necessary to do this manually via TWRP then that's fine, but just want to see if I can do these updates the conventional way)
I'm running my Tab S with Lineage 14.1 as said above. Not rooted, nano G apps isntalled. TWRP 3.3.1 recovery installed before I updated to Lineage 14.1 (and confirmed it works as of this post)
So 2 questions here:
1) Anything I'm doing wrong for the OTA updates?
2) how often are these updates to lineage OS necessary?
Try updating to the latest twrp version, and clean flash again lineage
I usually updatethr tablet every week once new build comes out.. But didnt see any difference in terms of performance, bugs
Hey @rihui
Thanks for the response! I'm half surprised anyone responded after 2 days
(I know this tablet is at its end-of-life)
I ended up figuring out where the updates are downloading to, and updating via TWRP (wiped dalvik and cache) and it seemed to work fine.
This seems to be an issue with a couple people but I don't know about this tablet specifically.
I figure once a month updates should suffice.
Does it make a difference that I don't have the TWRP app installed?
I don't have the twrp app and ota update worked fine.
I suppose monthly update is fine. Don't think there's much new development for the tablet, so it probably fine even though you don't update. (The only thing i noticed is the security patch version getting updated)
Yeah I'm not too worried about it. The update clearly worked as the other updates disappeared from the menu and there doesn't seem to be any issue with the tablet itself after playing around with it a bit.
What Lineage 14.1 did for me is what I wanted -- access to apps that I couldn't install on my older rooted stock ROM (I believe it was Lollipop still)
In another year or two we'll see if the tablet is still lasting
Thanks again!

Encryption / Twrp

Hi,
Some weeks ago I've got a LG V20 and followed some tutorials I found (without reading enough) to install LOS 17.1 with Twrp, Magisk and Viper4Android.
Then I was so dumb to enable LOS' encryption...now the problems start: I cannot install OTA Updates anymore. Twrp says "Decryption failed, cannot mount".
So...in short...how do I get updates now?
Some hours ago I installed LOS' recovery - but it also seems to be not working as expected: when I select " install update" in Lineage, it reboots into recovery - and thats it. No update is installed automatically as Twrp did normally. Can I use this with my already installed Magisk etc and encryption turned on at all? Or do I def need to use Twrp?
It would be very cool if someone here could help to get the decryption in Twrp work...that would be the best way for all and future users in my opinion.
However, I am stuck now with an encrypted phone, installed Magisk - and do not really know how to get an update of LOS the best way.
Many thanks already for every help

There are many v20 variants. Are you sure, you selected the correct version? In your case i would start with a clean installation following the official lineageOS guide.

Yes, I am sure...its a Vs995.
The way youre asking is interesting and I wonder a bit why...it implicates to me that either Twrp should work with encrypted LOS 17.1 - or Lineage its recoverymode with Magisk, Viper / my installed stuff.
I'll now take a look into the official LOS guide...
Edit: i don't get it. I assume sideload through Twrp does not work (encryption !). Recoverymode of LOS does not even ask for the password so I assume it also does not work with encryption turned on. Or does it? If so, how??
Is there any readme/wiki for the LOS-recoverymode?
Again, my device is encrypted. Magisk and other things are installed.
So how to update without any available recoverymode that is able to decrypt?

Your data Partition is encrypted. Sideload does not touch data partition. Follow the guide
As if I didn't know it before, following the official guides producing the same errors as using Twrp.
I tried so many things...using official recovery does not install OTA automatically.
Sideload producing the same errors as using Twrp - "Magisk addond.d failed, cannot find Magisk binaries, reflash OTA Form decrypted recovery or reflash Magisk".

Question installing magisk to update from old phh gsi to arrow

Hello xda,
I've had the Pad 5 for a year now. Since I needed it to be multi-user capable, I originally installed a phh gsi on it, which has been working alright except for a few unwanted reboots from time to time.
Still, I believe it is more than time to update this thing, if only for security patches. Since I saw there's now a device specific custom rom with arrowos, I thought I was in luck.
However, I need to back all of the data up before doing so, if I don't want to get shout at by my children. I kind of understood that the best way to back this thing up was to first get root.
Since I had not done it originally, I set out to install the magisk app (v. 25.2), found the boot.img of my original firmware, patched it in the app, flashed it with fastboot and happily rebooted.
The happiness was short-lived, though, as the magisk app displayed a pop-up saying that it doesn't support magisk versions older than v22.0
What may I have done wrong to get that message ?
Thanks for your time and help !
