As many of us have took the recent Kitkat OTA we have a variety of questions. Since there have been many threads asking the same question or related to the same question, I will be making this thread to keep this from continuing.
Question: I have took the Kitkat update, is there any way I can root?
Answer: No, no known exploit works on the RAZR M, unless you have a unlocked bootloader. Then you can flash a custom recovery and flash a superuser.zip and gain root access (Credits - fredsky2)
Question: Can I unlock my bootloader now that I have the kitkat update?
Answer: No, the bootloader has been patched ever since the JB OTA. No exploits will work with the RAZR M.
Question: Will Rootkeeper keep root after the OTA?
Answer: I've yet to see it work so I assume no.
Question: When I take the OTA, will it lock my bootloader?
Answer: No, once the bootloader is unlocked, it cannot be relocked.
Question: Can I downgrade to Jellybean after the Kitkat OTA?
Answer: No, the bootloader is locked, meaning you cannot downgrade or even touch the kernel.
Question: How can I return my phone to stock so I can receive the OTA?
Answer: RSD back to stock.
Question: Where can I get the SBF Files for the DROID RAZR M?
Answer: Here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=8
Question: My phone won't let me take the Kitkat ota, what do I do?
Answer: Most likely it's because apps are disabled or root is present. RSD back to stock is typically the solution to the problem. If you want to RSD back to stock but don't want to lose your data, look for the question below.
Question: Can I sim unlock after I take the Kitkat update? (Suggestion Credits - gtmaster303)
Answer: Yes! There is a tutorial with video on how to do it found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2487863 . MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PROPER DRIVERS INSTALLED!
Question: Can I flash a custom recovery after the Kitkat update?
Answer: No, unless your bootloader is unlocked.
Question: I'm getting a getvar error, how do I fix it?
Answer: In the xml file found in the zip, delete any getvar lines at the beginning of the file.
Question: Can I RSD without clearing data?
Answer: Yes! I asked myself and I'm adding this for others sake. Delete the <step operation="erase" partition="userdata" /> line in the XML file found in the zip. I suggest using it only for when you're on the same version of the update. So 9.30.1 to 9.30.1. Give credits to lem22 for helping me out! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2755924
Question: What's are the overall changes/problems with Kitkat? (Suggestion Credits - Strife89)
Answer: There has been a full list provided here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=52736453&postcount=1 , click the show button below to see Strife89's list!

The Good
The UI is definitely smoother. It doesn't jitter or stall under heavy usage anywhere near as much as it did in Jellybean.
Battery life when the phone is asleep seems to have been improved a little.
USB audio out is now supported.
The occasional "screen jitter" that plagued the Jellybean build is gone.
KitKat's Quick Settings panel is quite handy.
The native lock screen now supports adding, removing, and rearranging widgets.
Although it can't be installed from the Play Store, the Google Experience Launcher can be sideloaded and works just fine.
The Neutral / Very Subjective
The AOSP keyboard has changed; the keys are smaller and, in landscape, very squashed. You may need to adjust to it (I'm trying, but it's a struggle) or find a replacement.
Battery life when the phone is actively in use has not been noticeably improved in my experience; but it hasn't been noticeably worsened, either.
There's now a shortcut to the camera from the lock screen, which can be used even if the phone is locked by a pattern/PIN/etc. (Great if you're a shutterbug; not so great if someone else decides to troll your Dropbox/Drive account.)
The Google Camera app works - but Photosphere can't be used, as the Razr M doesn't have a gyroscope.
The Bad
No more root, for those with locked BLs (me). (Saferoot fails, and many users are reporting losing root even when they try survival methods.)
Wi-Fi tethering via most apps (e.g., FoxFi) has been blocked, so now you must pay your carrier for the feature unless a new workaround is discovered.
All notifications I've seen so far now flash the notification light white, instead of unique colors. This may be frustrating for some who used the colors to decide whether to check the phone immediately or later. (Luckily, there are ways to address this.)
The Blur launcher is same 'ol, same 'ol. It uses a solid black background for the soft keys and notifications bar (rather than taking advantage of KitKat's transparency support), and it still has that Quick Settings menu on the left (which is redundant now). In addition, Holo Launcher (which I was using) doesn't account for the space used by the softkeys at all, making it difficult to use. (I've switched to Nova Launcher, which is working fine.)
I've experienced some weirdness with the application switcher. Sometimes it drops me to the launcher right after displaying the list, and sometimes apps will overwrite another's position on the list, or be dropped from the list entirely without reason (this is always temporary, however - just bring up the switcher again).
Some apps can no longer write to the SD card - or at least not wherever they please. We still have the Files browser, mercifully (but I favor Total Commander anyway, which seems to work perfectly).
The audio quick switch on the lock screen has been removed. Also, the buttons for entering a PIN are smaller.
(Leraeniesh) Under heavy usage, the Razr M may get hotter under KitKat than it did under Jellybean, and may drain the battery more.
(GPIX) Some users have noticed decreased network performance in some apps, such as Chrome or YouTube, while on Wi-Fi and with Wi-Fi power-saving enabled.
(GPIX) Several users have reported popping noises - when a sound begins to play, or in the middle of playback. (I haven't experienced it, however.)
Swype is no longer included. If you used it in Jellybean, you will need to purchase it on the Play Store after taking the OTA.
(ls3c6) Some have encountered problems with sharing the address book to paired devices over Bluetooth.

If there are any extra questions needed to be added, let me know and I'd be more then willing to add them!
If there is a user having problems that are listed in this thread, just link him here!
I posted both here and Q&A because questions seem to pop up in both places. I'm doing this to clean up the forums a bit better and keep questions from being asked multiple times. Hope this helps and have a great day!
You should add info about Sim unlocking on KK too. Great write up. I will get this thread stickied

May I suggest merging some of the info from this into the post? Linked post is intended to be helpful for those who haven't taken the update yet and are asking what it's like. (Not as numerous as the threads from those who DID take the OTA, but they're there.)
Since I wrote said post: feel free to chop it to bits as needed, if you use it.

Less KitKat related but since most of the Q/A are root related: What's the last version that the bootloader is unlockable? My on contract phone met a watery death so I snagged a used Razr M, I know it's a long shot but what should I be looking for when it comes? I'm seeing a few different #'s but it looks like 9.8.1Q-66, 98.15.66.xt907.verizon.en.us is the last one right?
(deleted the quote code by accident)
Question: I have took the Kitkat update, is there any way I can root?
Answer: No, no known exploit works on the RAZR M
---------------------------
Imho i think it would be nice to point out if you can or cannot have root if your bootloader is unlocked
Like, 'question: my bootloader is unlocked, does that means i have a green card?'
=p
Overall awesome thread op, thanks for doing this for the razrm community

Yes, you're correct, that's the last one with unlockable BL. If that's what you have, you are LUCKY!
Also, I've just discovered it's not possible to downgrade to JB after flashing KK even with an UNLOCKED bootloader!

It is possible. Just tz partition and one other can't be. If you remove command to flash them from xml, you'll be able to downgrade via RSD.

Thanks, someone else pointed that out in another thread and I was able to get it to work by removing gpt and tz from the xml.
You're a power user. Can the Huawei Mate 9 Pro keep up? Rate this thread to express how "healthy" the development scene is for the Huawei Mate 9 Pro. A higher rating indicates available root methods, kernels, and custom ROMs.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
This is a weak spot as it's no well known worldwide. Dev's are not too many and custom ROMs or even Official Updates are missing.
Official updates are excellent and fast since android 8 dropped. I usually get security updates the same month they are for. But it's true, no real custom rom development as of yet. Hopefully we get better sw once Project Treble compatible roms are available.
The Phone is good enough. Nothing spectacular. When I got the root sorted by using the Krom root, the phone is stable. I have high hopes and expectations for the resurrection remix ROM via the openkirin project, in my opinion the best ROM out there.

Would you please explain how did you root your phone with mentioned method (kroom root) ?
Do you think I will be able to root my phone Huawei Mate 9 PRO (LON-L29 8.0.0.378(C432)
I have been searching for root for a long time now, but I am very confused since there isn't really good community around this model.
I hope somebody will be able to help rooting my phone.

Assuming you have unlocked the bootloader.
You can download Krom from here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-9-pro/development/kangvip-rom-b354-mate-9-pro-links-t3790605
When you unzip the rom files, you will find Run.bat Run that file and when it's time to install, you get to the install menu, you select option 2 instead of option 1. Your phone will then be rooted and reboot. Enjoy.

Thank you very much for the support. I am still searching for the best way to get root to bypass safetynet. It seems like magisk root is best way to do so. Well I guess I will not be able to root after all since I don't have the bootloader code. I contacted Huawei support, they do not promise anything but there is still a tiny hope.
I know there is options like DC unlocker etc but I didn't get / read any confirmation about that anyone have successfully rooted their mate 9 pro [No EXTERNAL SD double sim version (LON-L29)] with a DC given code.
In this point I don't know what to do. Even if if I somehow manage to get the bootloader code I still need to find proper magisk root method. Mate 9 pro has no good community unfortunately.
I know my next phone is gonna be root friendly device like One Plus 6 or Google phone etc.
I hate not having full control of my own device.

I'm with you on this one.
Owning this device has taught me a few life long lessons:
1. Buy a popular phone, more spare parts, cheaper repair
2. Buy a popular phone, more community support and custom ROMs
3. Buy a popular phone, cheaper, especially second hand, which I personally prefer
4. Buy a popular phone, got an issue? Someone else already solved it

Hi. I recently bought RN5 AI and I am pretty happy with what I have for this price range, I am happy with MIUI 10 but I feel that I like the stock Android experience better, so I have some questions regarding this :
1- if someday I want to sell the device and lock the bootloader again, will it show on the bootloader status as locked or RELOCKED?
2- does the latest magisk work on MIUI 10? And does Xposed work as well?
3- do custom ROMs in general feel smoother than MIUI 10? And is multitasking better overall?
4- What is the main disadvantage? and what should I look for when I unlock the bootloader?
.
Thanks a lot in advance, I hope I can get all the answers I need from you guys, this forum is the only place I can find those answers.

1. EDL flashing via MiFlash has "CLEAN all and LOCK" button which flashes ROM and LOCK B/L but only authorized ACCOUNTS can do EDL flashing and bad news is in order to enter into EDL mode, two points on motherboard required to be touched by wire/metal and simultaneously usb should be inserted
2. Magisk YES, xposed NO
3. YES but in all roms whatsapp and fb messenger calling/hearing voice notes etc, closes the screen for 2/3 seconds , don't know why
4. your device become more dependent on you and too many options of new roms/kernel/mods keep you always on toes to flash more and more and again and again! i found it addictive! , also your device become insecure, and anyone can extract your data (if you didnt set finger scanner on custom rom) then you /data paritition is not encrypted and your privacy is at risk
but at the end! for me, its learning experience and if I am only gonna keep Droid on locked bootloader , never test rom, never tweak fone and have fun with it...... then i should better buy iphone
Dear all. Recently bought a G40F and ever since I was on the lookout for custom ROM support. more specifically, a well tested and "straight forward" custom ROM installation sequence. for a noob like me that's very important.
although Moto shares their kernel source code to custom rom devs, the ROM scene for G40/G60 is nowhere comparable to other phones like Poco X3. Im guessing thats because it's launched only in the Indian market(so far) and it hasnt attracted a lot of devs worldwide. well, its a shame tbh.
I have scoured the internet and was disappointed to find nothing of that sort. just a pile of generalized guides(beware of bricking) which is just copy pasted for every devices out there, probably for clicks and running ads. Yet, thank god I found this guy Selva Kumar A. He wrote a detailed guide and tested it on his own G40, and also has a guide if you happen to brick it.
once again, i am a noob and this would be my first custom ROM. So don't take my word for it. I am here reaching out to the community hoping to find better opinions and corrections to the techniques mentioned above. If any Devs reading this, please spare some time to evaluate this. bricking my phone is such a nightmare, but I want root access and try out some cool stuff.
Bootloader is not unlockable at the moment
Correct me if I'm wrong.
With an unlocked bootloader I can root the phone.
whereas for installing a custom ROM I should wait until a developer makes one that'd fit g40f, which also requires a unlocked bootloader

Bootloader is unlockable good news, an update with latest September Security patch + fix got released
bootloader is unlockable now
I have just unlocked bootloader on the latest Fold 3 F926b Beta and the camera is fully functional!!! - Seems sammy have finally done away with this silly thing lol!!
Please see vid below - i will upload another showing proof of boot splash red text then camera working
here is a video showing the angry warning text and the device booting and me using the camera
So there we have it! hopefully development will take off a bit now and also apologies!!!
Had i bothered to tinker in the last couple of weeks we may have known this earlier!!!!
Finally........
After testing i now know which file can fix the camera on B1 - its to risky to flash it on android 11 as i almost lost download mode SO I AM NOT GOING TO BRING ATTENTION TO THIS FILE JUST YET - THERE WILL BE ONE LOON WHO FLASHES IT ON A11 WHILST ROOTED AND LOOSES DOWNLOAD FOREVER
The camera issue was actually "fixed" in beta 2 ZUKA!!!
- i have tested this on B1 where camera broke on BL unlock and also on android 11 fixing the camera issue but causing download mode issuses.
What this means is that we have something to possibly bite back with should sammy lock down the cameras again
Big thanks to @dr.ketan for the help in finding this
Does f926n have to wait until Android 12 is updated to brush the machine normally, and the camera will not be locked

we cannot root beta yet (or i have been unable too and no one else has even bothered trying lol)
I think we will stand a better chance when we have full firmware and source code but early indications from the "stable" korean version is that Samsung are still killing cameras on bootloader unlock

I tried unlocking BL of F926N (not B) after installation of OTA update a12 (BUL4) released on 12/15, but camera was still dead as mentioned above. And rooting via magisk didn't work well either. So I reflashed firmware of a11 (AUJ7) using Odin and rooted without TWRP.
EDIT: Samsung have really redeemed themselves! my moaning below is now moot
This all confirms that this has been a deliberate move by Samsung to impede the modding community
yes they have done this before with knox etc etc but killing a fundamental piece of the device's hardware just because they don't like rooting is wrong and also probably ILLEGAL if they are not advising in the Download mode screen that this is what will happen.
There has been no statement as to why, they are behaving like the insulting kid in class who hides behind the teacher when the class revolts at their actions lol.
I invite Someone from Samsung to explain whats going on and why they are doing this of course, but silence will prevail with all things Fold 3 (much like it did with the first "fix" that was trumpeted on twitter months ago)
I am hopeful that the workaround i have found with @dr.ketan will see us good for a bit when the release firmware for android 12 eventually lands in Summer of 2022 (yes im being a grumpy sarcastic child today lol) but that will no doubt be patched by these Sammy psychopaths against modding eventually.
Edit - now moot

VERY much looking to jump the Sammy ship as well. Just seems like they aren't interested in listening to the customers...even us. I truly believe they are butt-hurt that the dev community makes better ROMs and improves their products.
But the Pixel and Sony are looking WAY better.
