Questions about the alcatel ideal 4060a - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi all, I'm new around here and Have done some research but I'm getting a little lost. Maybe you all can help...
First off let me say I have a alcatel ideal 4060a that is for my teenage son.. I know it's cheap phone and older but they got to start somewhere. I'm here because this phone has a HUGE memory leak in the OS (5.1.1) and it fills up the internal memory and slowly makes the phone unusable. I've reset the thing, looked for updates and even looked for old patches but nothing has worked. At this point I'm thinking it needs to be rooted and flashed with a different android but what do you think? what would you all suggest? Is there anyone out there that can pull It all together into one place? Also what rom would you recommend? I would be most grateful for any assistance and thank you in advance.

The 4060a Alcatel IDEAL only appears to have a "memory leak" in the OS. In a nutshell, internal storage is only about 4GB useable out of its 8GB eMMC. Once you install a handful of apps, available storage begins to dwindle away quickly due to the accumulation of app data and app cache junk. Unfortunately, other than adding an external micro SD card for extra storage space, there isn't much you can do to remedy this. One helpful remedy is to go to Settings>Apps and select DISABLE on any app that you have no intent on using. While disabling isn't the same as uninstalling, it will make unused apps dormant abd unable to accumulate app data and cache junk.

Issue with apps on SD after reboot

Hi all,
I have as strange issue in regards to apps on the SD card. I'm rooted, S-off on 3.29 stock. I installed installLocationMod, which enabled me to move any apps, even those not necessarily programmed, to be moved on 2.2 to the SD card. I basically moved everything that's not system, gapp, or widget related.
Everything works great, until I have to reboot, or I attach the phone to a PC as a hard drive. Basically, the apps don't come back after the phone comes back up, or its disconnected from the PC. I have to spend many hours doing reboots, battery pulls, dalvic cache wipes, etc, and then seemingly randomly, they pop back up.
When they're missing in the app list, the settings / app manager shows that they're there, but they're always "computing" when I select one to read the properties. Also, the market installer gets stuck, and I can't uninstall anything either.
Recently, I've read threads about partitioning the card before moving apps to SD.. is that still necessary with 2.2? Is that why this is such a pain? I'm thinking maybe the only solution is to move everything back to where they came from, and only move those apps that are specifically programmed to be moved on a non-rooted phone, and get rid of the modlocationinstall program altogether. That's a drag because I don't have room for all the apps, so I'll have to lose some... which is one of the reasons I rooted to begin with.
Any ideas? BTW, this is the second SD card that does this. The card is good.
Thanks,
Mike
Hey, I found this elsewhere on the forums in the LimeMOD rom in regards to mod install location:
"important !!! after a reboot you need to stop LauncherPro in the running applications menu to reload all sd installed apps !!! "
Could Sense be the reason for the missing apps issue? Is there a way to 'postpone' it on reboot?
Thx,
Mike

I'm thinking I might try stopping the Sense service after the reboot and letting it restart and see if they come back. I'll try it if I have to reboot again.. I'm actually avoiding rebooting at all cost now since it takes hours of frustration to get back to working order again.
Another thing I noticed.. alot of programs have that I moved have hidden services that are listed in a start-up auditor I installed just to see what the system was doing on boot up. I originally thought I'd be safe moving them since I didn't have widgets associated with them, or they didn't seem system related. Now I'm beginning to realize that I might have to be more careful what is moved, since I don't always know how they'll behave on boot. I suppose that's another reason why its best for non-techies just to rely on devs to build the default 2.2 a2sd behaviour into their programs, rather than forcing them there with stuff like mod install location.
Oh well... I'll keep you all updated when I know more. I'm rather surprised though, that more people aren't experiencing this...
Restarting Sense doesn't do anything. It seems still to be completely random.. usually after 4 or 5 hours of me continually manual rebooting. Nobody has any input at all?

update:
After several unsuccessful reboots, I was able to get back the apps by going into settings / phone storage and unmounting the card, and remounting it, with no reboot. I've tried that in the past and just had the phone lock up, but this time it worked. FWIW, modinstalllocation was set to auto, and debug was off. I don't know if its repeatable, since I don't relish having half my phone unavailable for half the day to test it, but next time I lose everyting, I'll try it again and update the thread. I realize that judging from the lack of responses, most of you all don't really care, but since one guy did say he had the same problem, and to prevent someone in the future from going through all this aggravation, I'll keep on top of this. It will be my little contribution to the forum...
UPDATE: Had to finally do a reboot, and all the SD apps came back! I'm thinking the card dismount/remount did the trick

g sensor/notification light failure.

I hope this hasn't been covered here before. I've searched all over xda and Google for a solution but no one seems to address my specific situation.
I used to have a Samsung Epic. I traded my friend for an evo. I swapped our SD cards since epic comes with 16gb. When I got the phone she hadn't made any modifications. Completely stock. My accelerometer and notification light worked fine at the start. Since then I've rooted and installed many custom roms. Before I traded her the epic I was trying to create more space on my SD card and wiped the whole thing. Bad idea. The Rom I was using kept force closing closing all my apps. I flashed a backup I had stored on ny computer and it was no problem.
I'm not sure when my accel and LED stopped working with my evo..these aren't features I use or pay attention to on a daily basis. I only really care about the accel and have been trying to fix it for quite a while now.
I've read in different threads to A) Unroot, wipe everything, and use an RUU to go completely back to stock. B) download and push the accel file over the old one under data/misc in the root of your SD and C) download the sensor debug app to see if it gets a reading. Ive tried them all. I'm back at stock, unrooted. I downloaded the file but when I wiped the SD card it deleted all of my root folders. When I used the RUU it created some of the original folders but not all of them and not the ones specified to replace the files. I tried to create them myself but it made no difference. When I opened the sensor debug app it did not get a reading..or...at least I don't think so, but I don't know exactly what is supposed to come up.
Everything I've read so far tells me this is a hardware issue...but if it was working when I first got it how could it be an issue with the hardware? I had to have erased some necessary file or source that's causing this problem. Right?
Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas? I guess since I'm not rooted anymore I could go to Sprint and have them replace it but I don't really feel right about doing that and honestly id rather just learn what I did wrong and how to fix it. I feel like there's got to be a way to format my SD card to the evo stock settings.
My only thoughts would be to either copy the contents of the original owners SD card, unless theepic has already gotten rid of her original evo files, or copy the contents of someone else's SD card who's evo still has these things working. Would that work?
Thanks in advance for reading this novel and for any input you might have. I've been lurking about in these forums for a few months now and there are some brilliant devs and posters around here.
Oh. One more thing. As I mentioned earlier, the accellorometer is what Im really worried about fixing. The notification light is of little importance but I feel confident that these two issues go hand in hand.
Thanks again for anything you may be able to contribute. This is a long long post for something noooot really that important or common.

Low on space..can I just continue?

I have a stock (2.2) HTC Desire that is reporting it is "Low on Space", the phone storage is 12.90MB. I know this means I wont be able to store further apps but is there any problem if I just continue to use the phone in this state?
As I only use it as a spare phone I dont really want to start rooting it, all the apps that can be moved to SD have been and im unlikely to want to add any further apps.
As im happy with the phone as it is can I just continue to use it as it is, Low on Space? Im sure I read somewhere that while the phone is showing Low on Space there are some things that wont work. Is there anything I might need to worry about?
Many thanks in advance.
It's not a problem for the phone stability to have low free internal memory.
I had the low memory icon in the notification bar for several months before I rooted it.
The disadvantage is that as you said you can't install or update the apps.
However, I think rooting is now pretty easy and secure for Desire.
There is no problem, but you can't install new app or update it.
Furthermore some app don't make the sync due to low space. (many times ago I've this problem with gmail app)
Start the root and install a new brand rom like Cooldroid V3 and you will resolve your problems
Tom
Thankyou for your replies.
I have removed 2 apps that I hardly ever use, but I have left their backups in Astro, so I can re-install if needed. My phone memory now shows 15.9mb. As a result of the helpful advice I wont worry if I get the Low Memory warning again..so long as the phone remains stable, which it has been up to now.
Now I just need to pluck up the courage to root and put a custom rom on it....
I was wondering if you have tried the following? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037619&highlight=move+apps+to+sd+without+root
I was able to avoid rooting for a long time using this method. If you can pluck up the courage and find the time, rooting is definitely better in my opinion because it is a more permanent solution. It's not that difficult if you read a lot (then read some more and then even more), and no-one could have been more of a noob than I.

Its a case of buy a new phone or root. Once you hit low memory you will be forever plagued by it even if you uninstall a few apps as data just keeps building up elsewhere. You might buy yourself another 3 or 4 months by uninstalling all the updates for the sock apps such as flash, search, facebook, youtube, etc. I was in the same situation but then bit the bullet and rooted - not too hard as long as you follow the instructions. I now have 900mb free for apps and I reckon at least another year or so of life added to the phone

[Q] Firmware 4.3 'Move to SD feature' broken

Hi guys, I posted this over at android central but I also wanted to post here to get as much help as possible.
"Guys, quick question. I haven't been on stock rom for a long while but I kind of missed using the S-pen and someone suggested a stock-based custom 4.3 rom that I actually like so I've stuck with it for the time being. Now, I never really bothered with move to SD mods because I've learned to use my internal and external memory more efficiently but I figured if it's feature in TW I might as well take advantage since I'll be traveling abroad for two months come Dec. Well I've noticed that even after the apps are "moved" to the SD card, I don't regain any usable space on my internal card. I downloaded a game that's 779MB. My internal reduced from 3GB to 2.2GB. Okay. So I moved the game to my SD card. It moved 778MB to the SD card and 656KB remained on my phone. However, my internal only went from 2.2GB to 2.3GB. What?
I went back and calculated all the games I moved over and I've barely recovered more than 500MB for close to 30 games/apps moved to SD. All the games are still taking up close to their entire size in internal memory. Then what's the point? I have a 64GB class 10 card. Can someone enlighten me on what the hell is going on? I normally would just shrug of when things fail this like this but actually being tempted to use it and then finding it broken is really irritating."
"Also, I should point out that none of the storage is taken up by game data. Usually when I finish game and haven't touched it for a while I just clear data and uninstall. However, I will be traveling with a organization that specializes in providing AIDS/HIV care and education to developing nations, so I will going to multiple small villages across five countries. I'm not counting on having any kind of service for a good majority of the time so I thought "great" I'll take advantage of this new feature and download every game I've ever bought so I have something to occupy my time during the plane/train rides. I haven't downloaded any games on my phone since I got the N7 so every game currently on my phone is newly downloaded and never opened, so, no game data."
Any help would be much appreciated.

Yeah...I know.

Did they downgrade multi-window in kitkat?

It says they only let 2 multi-windows now.... DIdn't before you could do 3 or 4?
Before that I could do as much multi-windows as I wanted? Why did they make this change? Is this a downgrade?
Or am I just imaging things? Was it always 2.
Also, Polaris Office 5 sucks it has so many glitches (document not supported, but it opens manually, doesn't free draw save for ppt, etc.) . I want the polaris office that was included in the original note 10.1.
Also, wtf google Why did you take the external SD card away...
There was a reason why I bought the 16 gb ones.
It was always 2 from the factory. You can root and enable 4 though.

So you use the cloud... Google wants to own your info, not just allow you access to it....
The bullsh!t line about security is ridiculous...
The cloud is not the answer. Download and upload speeds, data charges, file sizes and security issues. Just a few concerns. I use cloud storage and am in the process of reducing it. Trust Google? Hell, that is akin to demanding you trust the government. You cannot.

I agree about the cloud not being the answer. I also agree that taking away a feature people relied on, even made purchasing decisions based on (16GB vs.32GB), for no truthfully explainable reason, is pretty crappy. But it's time to move on. The hobbling of external storage first came to light last December when the SGS4 GPe received 4.4.2. That's six months ago. Since then, nothing's changed. People's choices are:
Leave Android for another OS out of contempt for Google
Stay on 4.3 forever
Root and install a fix
Adjust the way you use the external SD card and come up with new ways to do things
Trade your 16GB devices for one with more storage
***** endlessly to strangers on discussion forums about how crappy Google's decision was and how your life has been ruined
Even with six months having passed, every day, on every forum I view, there's another new thread started about "why can't I save to external SD?" It's getting kind of old. So people need to pick one of the above and move on. And those choosing option 6, no one here can help you and answers to any and all questions you might ask have been posted dozens of times. F'd up external storage is Google's "new normal" and they aren't going to back down.
P.S. - I chose option 4
we can stop 16g android device and finally we have 32g or more.

Someone should tell Samsung.
This really isn't the catastrophe it's being made out to be. Video, games, and pics take up the most storage space. They can be stored and played off the external SD card. Most large apps allow you to move them to external SD too. All Samsung's apps (Video, Music, Gallery, My Files, Samsung Link) have universal access to external storage and can be used to manipulate files saved there. Any app can create its own sandbox on external SD and save/edit/delete files there. What's been lost is every app having access to everything on external storage. It's a pain in the a_s but there are work-arounds that aren't that onerous and most people, especially consumption users, will be fine.
4. root and SDfix
The only acceptable solution is to root and run SDfix from playstore.
I was forced to do that after kitkat OTA upgrade on my Note3 and external SD write was crippled overnight.
My Note10 is still on 4.3 rooted, but when I go 4.4, root+SDfix will be first on the list right after the upgrade.
