Ah.....I think I found my answers after googling around.....Here is the answers if anyone is interested:
There are a number of reasons why Duo Effects may not work with your photo:
One or both lens were blocked when you took the photo.
You didn't use the Camera capture mode. You can't use Duo Effects on photos taken in other capture modes.
The photo you're trying to apply the effects to was taken using the front camera.
The scene was not set to Auto.
The flash was not set to off when the photo was taken.
There was not enough ambient light when the photo was taken.
You've zoomed in or the camera may be too close to the subject when the shot was taken.
Duo Effects can't be applied to cropped photos.
Duo Effects can't be applied to the same photo more than once.
Duo modi all the time greyed out
Hi,
i have the same problem all the time the camera says lenses are blocked. But my hand is far away form the two lenses
I've just seen pictures (taken on a g3) of players playing football. When I take pictures of people walking fast they turn out blurred. How do I take pictures of moving subjects? Or should I use a different camera app?
thanks

I am seeing this too. Took a look at the camera settings, but didn't see anything that would address this. I thought the laser-focusing was supposed to make the camera very speedy in taking pictures.
Thoughts?
Laser autofocus makes it speedy to focus. The shutter speed defines if moving subjects are blurry.
The only thing to change on stock camera app is to set HDR to OFF (it's auto by default). Maybe this will help, if it's using HDR on these photos.
Default camera app in burst mode works just fine - press and hold shutter.

Move youre phone in the same direction as the object and take the picture
Also, make sure your outside on a bright day. Put the sun behind you (so that it's shining on your subject).
Any camera will struggle to freeze an object in motion if it's not bright enough.
The one pet peeve I had with the S7 camera (I had both the S7E and the S7 earlier this year) was that the plane of focus was so narrow that large parts of the photo would be out of focus or blurry (subject and where you tapped to focused would be spot on, but rest of image would often be hazy I AM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE BOKEH EFFECT PRODUCED BY SHALLOW DEPTH OF FIELD!). I recently got the Note 7 and it too seemed to suffer from the same problem. All this is shooting in Auto mode.
However, taking the same exact shot in Pro mode (with ISO, Shutter, WB and Focus still set to Auto,) the photos come out better! It's weird, everything set to auto in pro mode should be same as Auto mode, but its not. I think it's because Pro mode gives you the option to set Focus to "Multi AF" instead of "Center AF" as well as the option to do matrix metering.
Now my question is whether there is a way to set auto focus to Multi, and metering to Matrix in the Auto mode. Doesn't seem to be any menu options.
Most likely the Aperture. When you focus on an object with the Apeture wide open (provided the aperture is big enough) it will blue the objects outside of the focus point. The phone has an apeture of 1.7 which is pretty good.

You are missing the point. I am well aware of depth of field and aperture, and what the 1.7 does. I am talking about multi AF versus spot AF and metering.

In Auto mode it seems to prefer opening up the aperture all the way for that subtle bokeh effect. It seems there is no way to override the aperture behavior of Auto (which is more aggressive than the 'auto' of pro).

The aperture does not change.
I'm pretty sure what you're experiencing is the depth of field, and having f/1.7 is an unfortunate side effect at times. The only way pro mode would be any different is if Samsung's processing is playing with focus in a less than optimal way. If the exact area you intend to focus on is 100% in focus, I see no reason that pro and auto mode would be any different.
Not being funny or anything but have you made sure there's no plastic film thing over the camera lens? Sometimes can be hard to see that it's on there. Only say that because I've not seen any examples of this happening else where like in note 7 camera review videos etc.

Yes. It does. The quoted 1.7 is maximum size. if it couldn't be effectively made smaller, every picture in moderately bright light would look like the surface of the sun. Go into pro mode, you can manually adjust from a pin point (almost closed) 1/24000 to a huge (wide open) 10.

It is a dept of field issue and they are (pro and auto) different. In Auto mode, it seems that the aperture is kept overly open and the exposure is shortened (less motion blur, more saturated colors, narrower DOF) on purpose. It looks nice. I've paid good money for SLR lenses with a larger aperture so I could make nice portraits with an out of focus background. But it's not what you always want. In pro mode you can manually adjust the effective aperture (same as f-stop in photo lingo). You can set the aperture to 'auto' in the Pro mode and it seems to be better about focusing a larger area of the photo by using a narrower aperture and a longer exposure and lower "iso" sensitivity. So Auto and Pro with all 'auto' settings appear to behave differently.
I really appreciate you guys taking the time to add to this discussion, particularly kaylorRN. But I fear you are all missing the point entirely. My original question may have been poorly worded I suppose.
I am not talking about focus blur or depth of field. I am very familiar with that concept. What I am talking about is situations when you shoot for an entire image to be in focus, but large parts of the image are still out of focus. Best to show you. Look at these photos shot with my old S7:
Photo 1
Photo 2
Photo 3
Photo 4
There is no real 'subject' in these photos, and they are not macro shots, so depth of field / bokeh / focus blur is not relevant. Those photos are normal, everyday photos where the entire photo is expected to be in focus. But you can see the S7 camera in Auto mode locks onto a very small area and other large areas of the photos are blurry.
Shooting with the Note 7 in Pro mode (with all parameters still left on Auto) seems to minimize this problem. I have a feeling its because pro mode allows you to shoot in "Multi AF" and lets you do matrix metering. Can anyone confirm or deny this hypothesis?
Again, I am not talking about depth of field / aperture.
Does anyone know if shape correction has any negative effect? I was going to use it but unsure of the ups/downs

Umm, that's shutter speed; not aperture. There is no way to control aperture because it is fixed on these phones. The phone compensates for the fixed aperture by reducing the shutter speed.
Look at the EXIF data from any picture taken with the s7 or note7 and they'll all have the same aperture. Pretty much any phone behaves the same way (the aperture may be different, but it'll be fixed).

Nothing in those photos appears to be in focus. If I had to guess, you were too close when shooting. Do you have other pics of the same things which were take at a greater distance?

ha. No, I wouldn't say I was too close. A normal distance away. And it was the same story even when shooting from far away.
Should be sharper. Looks as though the camera lens is faulty or you are causing some kind of shake. How were you holding the N7? The bike shots look as though you were reaching down and then angling the device, a very unsteady posture. Even holding the device too tightly can cause shake.

I see your point. The aperture is fixed, inadjustable. However mine seems to be on the contrary. It has a deeper DOF in Auto mode than in Pro mode (Multi AF). I did test many shots and can confirm that. Whatever results, it 's still unsatisfying to me. I 'd like to have a deeper DOF (just like decreasing the Aperture in DSlR)

I get what you are saying. I have noticed the same thing on my Note, and previous S7 Edge. I believe you are correct when you say that Auto Mode uses center focus, and Pro Mode uses multi-point. I normally use Pro Mode for just that reason.
Google Camera (all versions) running Pie OS has been very hit and miss in the focus problem, and therefore until a developer or OTA update can fix this issue, it is not recommended for pictures that matter. It is inconsistent as to when these issues occur. This being the case, if you are plagued with the Pie update, your camera performance results will not always be good.
After extensive testing with many hundreds of comparative photos taken with many camera apps this is the simple final conclusion:
Note that all these (except the stock app) require Camera2 API. Instructions elsewhere on this site.
For outdoor photos in bright light: Winner Stock A2 Lite camera app with the following settings:
Picture Quality:High, Contrast:Low, Saturation:High, Sharpness:High. These settings tend to take faster photos than HDR with similar results.
Note that all the camera apps work about the same in overall picture quality and only minor emphasis on color variations. While the google Cameras had a better saturation and warmer tone, the HDR artifacts in the sky make the photos only usable at lower screen resolutions. That limits your ability to crop or enlarge to bigger sizes. The stock camera did not exhibit these with HDR on.
For Indoor and low light: Winner in every test was the Pixel 2 camera app (GoogleCamera-Pixel2Mod-Arnova8G2-V8.2.apk) with HDR off or on depending on light levels. It produced sharp photos with surprisingly good clarity. The stock app was normally muddy and gcam 6+ was too grainy. As a bonus, the portrait mode zooms in (like the gcam 6+, which makes people look less distorted) and there is a motion video option (not tested yet) and lens blur that works better than the 2 lens system of the stock app, but the photos become only 5mp. Like the GCam 6+, HDR for solid color areas (like sky) had the same pattern. Haven't played with all the developer settings yet.
For ultra low light: Winner is the Google Camera 6 (MGC_6.1.013_MiMAX2_V1b_A8.1+fix_Hexagon_failed+blFront.apk) using the night sight feature found under More > Night. The idiosyncrasies of spontaneous app closure when a second shot is desired is annoying, however the results from their algorithm of image stacking is very well done. It also works well to create the smooth water motion for water falls and cascades, but only in dim light.
The gcam 5 app (GCamera_Mod_v.5.1.23_R5Plus_fix_crash.apk), that interestingly the pixel 2 app is based on, did not win in any category.
So I now have 3 camera apps to choose from depending on the photo required. Download an icon app to distinguish the 3 easily. I would imagine these results would be similar on other phones as well.
A note on HDR. None of the phone camera apps do HDR the way it is intended. In normal photography, HDR lightens areas in shadows and darkens blown out bright areas for a more usable photo by combining under exposed, properly exposed and overexposed images that are stacked and aligned. In all the camera apps tested, it makes little difference to shadows and even made shadows darker in the gcam HDR modes. What it does when needed is take multiple underexposed images (each at a faster exposure or lower ISO) and combine to increase (not decrease) contrast for a more vivid (but often artificial) contrast look, while better saturating colors and less noise for hand held images in low light. To do a proper HDR, you need to bracket the exposure and combine in photo shop (PS). There are phone apps that allow exposure bracketing and create the HDR in PS if you really want to get that involved. HDR+ only uses HDR when needed and HDR+ Enhanced the HDR is always on. When no HDR icon is visible, HDR is the HDR+ on when needed (auto mode).
I am currently running pie, and random focus issues have been surfacing for all the gcams. I read a comment that may be an issue with pie vs oreo, although not certain. It seems like Android One users are Google Beta testers. Pies battery life is much worse and no way to see what apps are causing the drain. I suspect it will get fixed in an update. Not for this forum though, there are already many out there for this issue. Main camera is set to Nexus 6P and Front camera a Nexus 5. I read elsewhere that this was optimal, but did not test if the others made any difference. The Nexus phones DO NOT use the same camera (sensor & Lens) on either the Front or Back camera so I am uncertain how much difference the setting actually makes. Most of the other settings were left as installed, although I am still testing to see if any improve the quality. Please chime in if you find any improvements and I will test and update this post. There is always room for improvements.
I would really welcome a more stable google camera build without the focus, night sight and HDR pattern issues. If someone has a line to the developer of these modded apps, please let them know.
Hi, thanks for sharing this. Do you have any specific settings for any of these apps? (Besides HDR)
Which gcam do you use for front selfies? On r5plus mod i get dank front selfies in good lighting but struggles so much on low light so much grain, noise and distortion. Or do you have any specific settings? Thanks

I will do some more experimentation and update the post when I finish. It is very time consuming for the developer settings do not have easy explanations as to what they do.

Pixel 2 for selfies, but HDR must be off for the photo to record. BTW, the flash works, but not sure it is any better then ambient light. Main issue is the 5mp front camera is a bit outdated. Lipstick on a pig is still a pig.
thanks and keep up the good work!
i think test results need to be explained a bit more detailed. for ex. oreo or pie based? you know, it's reported a lot that pie has gcams' losing focus issues (mostly with flash, blurry photos)
and yes, HDR and saturation (or maybe more) settings sharing would be better...

Arnova's v8.2: GoogleCamera-Pixel2Mod-Arnova8G2-V8.2.apk (Arnova8G2, 2018-08-13, changelog)
Although I am not certain if it is the best. When visiting the rose parade floats, there were random times where focus was an issue. I will experiment further with other versions. Many of the apks that are not compatible will just not start up (black screen or return to home screen). It would be nice to find a more stable version.
I agree except for the stock camera For outdoor photos in bright light... textures are always "muddier" than gcam to me. It can have a more precise light sometimes but it's a price not worth to pay IMO. If someone doesn't want to be bothered I'd suggest to use only the google camera 6 in order to have at hand always the night mode, arnova is generally sharper but you need to fully zoom it to spot the difference... i noticed also that the night mode of camera 6 produces better results than arnova even in mid/low light scenes but not always and not for all the shots... smt i make two shots with arnova and camera 6 night mode and keep the best... pity that camera 6 doesn't allow to be started by double tapping on the power button though.
Are you running Pie or Oreo? Are you having intermittent focus issues with the gcams? Will night sight always allow a second night sight photo without restarting the camera app? Have you looked at a solid blue sky with HDR on any gcam, and is there a pattern there? Thank you.
BTW, all my tests I enlarged the photos to 100% pixel level and more in PS comparing many areas of the photo in unison.

I'm running Pie, i do have some refocusing (but often it stops) but only in very low light condition. I didn't experience problems on second shots of night mode but smt it quits when i select night mode though. I do remember sometimes to see a pattern but only in night mode and in bright light I think. That was also a reason for not to use always the night mode btw... will do a shot on a deep blu sky when I'll see it but as far as I remember I didn't see this issue with arnova at least
I use one Gcam app called "Gcamera" is only in english and hdr front camera works..but is a older version of gcam and don't have a night mode photo etc, IMHO the best choice is for video on 60fps the xiaomi camera (in Pie update 60fps is enable) , for general video and photo gcam (a lot of optimization and hdr+) , and for selfies gcam with hdr off..waiting for it to work.

On ver 5r the development said he has fix the focus too.
I have a Verizon S20+ with the latest camera app update included in the system update last week. I still have issues with the camera's focus. I would like to know if it is just my phone or everyone. If I have my camera set on the standard 4:3 12mp setting, the focus work fairly well. If I set it on the 64mb 4:3 picture quality, the focus is terrible especially close up. Try the 64mb setting and point your phone at your computer keyboard. It is next to impossible to get it to focus. If you switch to the 12mp output, the camera focuses quickly and adjusts as you move the phone. Is this a software bug or just a limitation of the 64mp setting. I really don't know why using 64mp output should affect the focus. In good lighting, the 64mp output looks great when it is in focus. It's much better than the 12mp pictures so I would like to use it if I can get the focus working properly.

Actually, turning off auto HDR fixes the autofocus for me.
Same to me. Terrible focus with 64mp camera, even manually does not want to focus. I try to turning off Auto HDR, but no improvement, same worse focus....
I tried turning off my HDR but it doesn't seem to fix the problem for me. It may be slightly better but nowhere near the focus on the 12 megapixel setting.
I hope Samsung fixes this. I really like using the 64mp setting.

Why use 4:3? I've tried what the OP said above and no major issues. I have got Tracking Autofocus enabled when I was playing with the camera to see if I could get the same thing to happen.

I didn't try this test until after the update so I'm not sure if the problem used to happen on the 12mp setting as well. The 12mp seems to focus fairly well now. The 64mp setting is terrible.

The problem is that the Telephoto lenses (honestly it's not telephoto) uses PDAF and the main camera 12MP uses the Dual Pixel Auto Focus which is muche better.
But is seems like the new update made the focus much better.
The 3 lenses spces?
Ultra Wide 12MP 120º
Wide 12MP 79º
Telephoto 64MP 76º
As you see the tele is just 3º narrow than the wide in real life its 1.06x zoom, but Samsung has a clever way to make the Hybrid Zoom, they take the 64MP picture and CROP it to look like 3x zoom (lossless).
But answering your question, the focus problem is only noticiable in 3:4 64MP because they use PDAF as I say before.
Cheers.:good:
I have the S20 and find the camera won't focus close-up (which is rubbish as I use that function loads!). Then today I noticed with Microsoft Office Lens the camera instantly snaps into perfect close-up focus. So, it's not the hardware causing the issue, or if it is, it's that the Camera App isn't smart enough to use the hardware available correctly.
How is it after latest One UI 2.5 update?
