Q beta as a Daily driver? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

It's been out for a while now, and for a few days I'm wondering if it is stable enough for daily use.
From my researches i found some different opinions...
Some of them were about better battery life on Q than on pie... Some were about worse battery life... And some about crappy image quality with Q....
Can you guys tell me What problems did you face on Q? What are pros and cons vs pie?
Thanks!

For me even beta 3 was okay.. Switched to custom rom only because missing viper and normal file browsing in root folder.. Overall stability and battery was much more better than any rom I have tried.. And it was pretty smooth

I've been using q as my daily since beta 1. That said it is of course beta so you will run into some bugs. Overall it's a good experience and I'm loving the gesture navigation once getting used to it. Also I huge fan of the dark mode. Go into it keeping in mind if you decide to roll back to pie it'll wipe your data

Not yet for me as I use nova and gestures still don't work properly. Otherwise I'd say I'd be ok using it full time.

I've been using the beta since it's release and the latest beta is probably the least problematic one to try

I am loving it as well. Installed beta 4 just after release. However, some important apps I use daily are not really working properly. Some crash outright, some crash after some time. I forget though, if I revert back, I know I will have to wipe my phone for it, but will it automatically revert to my backup from Pie?

Yeah a few apps that were fine for me in beta 3 aren't working well it at all for me in beta 4 as well. OneDrive just force closes, Twitter notifications for subscribed tweets closes, and MLB at Bat says it's not supported even if it worked just fine with beta 3.
If you go back to Android Pie you have to factory reset.

Been my daily since beta 3...some issues but good enough for daily
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk

I prefer not to be a beta tester because I use my phone for business. But the built in call blocking feature that Google took away from all market apps running on Oreo or Pie, makes it worth using on a daily basis. I can put up with a shorter battery life, and plug it in my van for a recharge when I am driving.
In my opinion, it makes for a good daily driver.

Only issue I'm having is that my banking app won't work, but that's expected and in the release notes

no, your backup is now overwritten by a Q backup that Pie won't be able to use. You can use third-party backup apps instead

Actually, if you're referring to Google cloud/drive backup, once you revert to Pie, you can restore from previous backups. You will have to sign into apps like Instagram, etc., but it works. I have done it several times.

The first three were great. 4 has been crashing for me, and about half the time, I have to kill and restart apps in order to start them.

None of my Smart-home apps work with Beta 4 (Mi Home, Yeelight, eWeLink) - so I had to install Android 9 Pie again

Do you have Google Home app? If you do and have your smart home apps linked, I would've tried to use the Google Home app to control things until the apps get updated.

Apparently I had the bad bootloop version of beta 4 installed -- with the tag 190502.018. I flashed 190502.019, and it's working well again.

Pokemon GO laggy?

This is probably the millionth thread I have posted with some sort of issue about the OP3, but I can't find the answer anywhere online for this.
When I compare Pokemon GO on my OP3, Nexus 5 and my iPhone 5s, the Nexus and the iPhone are so smooth, but the OP3 has really stuttery scrolling and animations.
Why is this? it seems like a lot of animations on this phone stutter for me, even after a factory reset on 3.2.1
Can anyone share their pokemon go experience from this phone?

Except that many time I can't log in this game (the server may be over saturated) I don't have some problem when it can log in. But I can't compare to an iPhone 6 that I have because it's not out in France yet (apk on op3, and I can't jailbreak my iPhone because it's my work phone).

Except for the GPS, which just disconnects from time to time, everything on my phone runs really smooth, also Pokemon GO. Played it for 5 hrs yesterday, display was 5 hrs on, no issues at all. I had 30% battery, when I came back.

Seriously? Mine is blazing fast if the server and connection is perfect, gps lock is good and almost warm only for long day use
My brothers S6 Edge doesn't seem to accelerate graphics on Pokemon Go either. Just relax and wait a short period of time for the game to become better optimised. It happens a lot with new games.

Same for me
I am having the same issue. I shared my oneplus 3 phone data with another ipad and Samsung tablet. the ipad and Samsung has no problem playing the game. But the Pokémon go game will freeze. Sometimes it does it when is on Pokémon Go power save, somethings will freeze during game play. For 30 minutes I have to close the game and restart 5 times. I guess is the GPS software is having some kind of bug causing this .
OnePlus 3 still seems pretty buggy and I have to report the finding to another forum thread.

I found plenty of bugs beside just games, such as reboot when Bluetooth is connected when using Google map. I don't think Google map is beta anymore, actually Pokémon Go also no longer a beta game.

I'm having the same exact issue with an xperia Z5 compact, not powerful as Oneplus 3 but enough to support the game (SD810 and 2gb ram).
Here's a video from another user with the same problem https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrhiDQzcwJo&feature=youtu.be
Is it the same for you?
Did you solve the problem in some way?
EDIT: in my case it was too aggressive cpu/gpu throttling on higher temperatures

I would of posted this in the themes/applications forums but from I see its fairly inactive.
Just trying to see changes y'all made to the Eui laucnher or if you just stayed stock.
I love the CM theming. I'm using Material Glass. So cool looking! I need to use a darker wallpaper though. I love how thoroughly it themes things. Play store, settings, notifications, keyboard, even google now panel. everything really!

Yeah 727. Just because I have most this written elsewhere to copy:
It's pretty great, very snappy! Not really any drawbacks except IR doesn't work, FP sensor always made me go to 2nd code lockscreen so I disabled it. Battery life isn't as good, but still good compared to most phones. Best I could ever get was about 7 hrs sot, usually 4.5 to 6 ish and a full day to 1.25 or so. Can't really make it 2 full days like eui unless very light use. With Amplify, greenify, all the tweaks etc. I use a lot of nav at work though. There are a few Chinese bloat apps to remove, and no new builds of it since late Nov. All notifications worked 100% correctly for me. Xposed, Viper4android all fine, work on Eui too though.
I also tried MIUI, it's battery life is just stupid good on that one. MIUI > Eui > CM on that. But lots of Chinese bloat, a few errors, still had in app notification issues, theming doesn't work. Lots of new builds on that ROM though. A new 7.1 Aosp is close too [emoji2]

(Discussion) how are your impression of android 8.0 on pixel c?

As you all know Google has rolled out android Oreo to the masses , including the pixel c . I've got the notification on may tablet but too afraid to click install since 7.1.2 working really well for me . My main concern is battery life , being burned with 7.0 before I rather weary of the new software update to 8.0 . I'm using my tablet primary to take notes on lectures so I need a solid battery life.
Can any of you give me an impression of performance and general usability of pixel c with android Oreo installed ? I am using stock pixel c without and root or modifications
Android O works like a charm on my Pixel C. The performance is good, generally no stuttering, lagging etc. Microsoft Word isn't working though, Google Docs saves the day. I use the tablet for notes in lectures too, and I easily get a day and a half of use.
Edit: I'm on stock Oreo, no root, no mods.

It's nice to know . I'm using quid as my primary note taking app . The Oreo impression is generally best across all pixel devices except for people who wanted all of the new feature on their Nexus 5x. . . Anyways thanks for giving your input!
I guess I'll wait a couple of weeks before attempting to update . My exam is coming soon and I cannot accept change in my tablet yet.
P.s this forum is really quiet isn't it ?
Your welcome
I can imagine Android O isn't the best match with Nexus 5x. I had the 5x for a couple of months and all it did was throttle and stutter. My old Nexus 5 is way better on Nougat.
Yes, it's a little too quiet her here, hopefully it picks up.
OT: I tried to find Quid in Play Store, the only app I found was Quidd, a virtual sticker collector app in beta. Can't imagine it works well as a note app. Could you please guide me in the right direction?

I haven't actually used Netflix or Youtube, so I can't help you there. I enrolled in the beta program at dp4 and received an OTA of the public Oreo release about a week ago.
Only been on Oreo for a few days since installing and seems to be ok, no issues.

Clearing cache only gives me force close when trying to start the app. Force close is better than a white screen though.
Installed my OTA update to Oreo from Nougat 7.1.2 today. No issues so far but haven't really done alot either and update went smoothly.
I did notice that this Oreo update also shows a Updating Firmware splash screen that I've never noticed in other updates. Did I just not see them or is this new? What was changed in the FW?
I installed the update....
and apart from a oddity, where the update screen seemed to get stuck in a loop looking for further updates (I had to shut the pixel c down, and start it back up, to fix this)..it's been a fantastic update so far, very smooth and far more fluid. Everything seems to be a bit snappier, and it seems to be loading webpages and youtube more efficiently, and quickly..
BUT!!...I wouldn't recommend you update immediately if you, can't afford for anything to go wrong, as i tend to find that something will be broken somewhere, that we're not yet aware of (like Picture in Picture crashing when you try to use it)....
Maybe wait until you've got all your important stuff, out of the way before you update...
Hope this helps?

nah , it´s okay. To be expected really. after all next month pixel c will be 2 years old.
No, afaik project treble will be available only on phones launching with O.
About my experience, the update seems pretty nice so far. The performance is about the same. I never had lag or bad perf on this tablet honestly. The only problem I have had are two random reboots two days ago. The rest is fine.
As with all major revisions of android, it will take some time before all the apps are fully compatible with the Os and use the new APIs.
So I flashed in fastboot and run magisk. There is a weird situation when you reboot to go into recovery it says it is flashing firmware, I not seen that message before.
Magisk works, passes safetynet check.
I saw mention that Word crashes, well that is still true initially, when I open a document, it opens then then closes again, tried it 3 times then it stayed open, something about needing to download fonts? So it works eventually.
Battery status is weird, when plugged into power it is says is it NOT charging, when I pull USB cable out, it says it is charging. Small bug, but what you expect for version 0 of 8.
Chrome closes and reopened a few times, but then settled.
I rolled back from clean Oreo to Pure Nexus 7.1.2.
The main reason why is unbearable lags in Youtube app - when the active video is minimized and you want to browse Youtube it's just completely unusable. I think couple of times it stayed this way even without a background video.
Overall I was not happy with the performance so went back to Nougat and the difference is night/day.

Awesome. Thanks!
Be Aware that this is a Chinese beta rom. Unless you are familiar with westernizing Chinese Roms, you may want to wait for the Xiaomi.EU version that should come out ASAP.
If you install this, install Google chrome, and Google search through the Xiaomi store, then you can install Play Store and freeze all unwanted apps. If it's not in the store , it can be downloaded from any APK website.
Glad that Miui 11 is finally here bust isn't It annoying that Xiaomi makes most of us, the western world wait so long for the best features?
I have been using Xiaomi.EU for the past two months and it's been fantastic. Yesterday I installed the latest Global Stable 10.3.5 and it's like going back to March. It is missing A LOT! of stuff that the Chinese Beta Miui 10 per Xiaomi.EU has.
I would definitely wait for the release of Xiaomi.eu. It will be polished, without the bloatware and with the Play Store and Google Services already included. In three days, we should have a Update on the website.
I have tried Pixel Experience( Android 10 ) on the MI 8, and it's good, but it's far, very far from the functions that we have with our MIUI.

I have tried Pixel Experience( Android 10 ) on the MI 8, and it's good, but it's far, very far from the functions that we have with our MIUI.

What functions for example? Miui is ugly af and I don't think there are actually many useful, not gimmicky, features that make it worth using Miui over other custom rom. Also from what I am seeing, Miui 11 is still based on Android 9.

First I like AOSP a lot , and noone is making you use Miui, so.......
a quick google search would have told you that Miui 11 for the Mi8 is based on Android Q edit : it pie for or now but will switch to Q
It's been well publicised that its totally redesigned and will have a look and feel closer to OneUI. Yes, devices older than 4 years will get Miui 11 on their existing SDK. The Mi8 will get Q
By the way, since you hate Miui so much why bother commenting?
It seems that your post serve's zero purpose and simply just clutter's up the thread. A lot of people feel the same way about AOSP, that it's boring and bland, so your point is what exactly ?
Also, so many people install AOSP, and then immediately start installing Xposed, Substratum, Custom lock screens, ultimately making it closer to what Miui is. At the end of the day, nothing is better than anything else.

Why so abrasive? I was making a genuine question. From all the videos I've seen, and the dipper group in Telegram, this version of MIUI 11 is based on Pie.
I do not use any kind of modifications other than custom roms, I don't even root anymore so for me all those functions you are claiming (which I was asking out of curiosity) seem completely unnecessary and gimmicky in my opinion.

It seems that I misunderstood your initial comment, which I took as being abrasive and if that wasn't your intent then I absolutely apologize.
Okay so I installed Miui 11 and its flat amazing, its hard to believe that this is the first beta! tremendously smooth. The animations and scaling down of Miui makes it seem almost like something else. I was very happy to see that all of my data was restored, and I was able to install Playstore and Play Services from the miui App Store.
Next yes its based on Android Q, ( My bad its Pie, but Q is coming) and so far I have no plans to use anything else. I like it, alot. If you plan to install. Be sure to turn off automatic updates, this way you can control when they get installed and there's is no surprises. I am using the latest official Twrp and the latest Magisk Canary, and I flashed DM verity and Magisk prior to booting. One last thing, I formatted user data, wiped and rebooted my phone prior to installing the rom within recovery.
Edit:
If you do not have an extensive mI cloud backup, install Gboard or your keyboard of choice as soon as you can. Otherwise you may get confused by the multi language keyboard.
For me it's no big deal because I have used Chinese roms many times in the past and speak basic chinese. However, it is possible to click a button and move the keyboard into chinese if this happens just click the chinese character on the bottom left to return to English. You will not run into these issues if using swiftkey or Gboard. Next, after you have signed in to Google and have verified your apps, you can use a different launcher if wanted and install app freeze to install any unwanted apps.
Be sure to attempt uninstalling unwanted apps before freezing them, some are easily uninstalled. Finally, I have not seem a single ad. Dark mode works extremely well and so does the themes store. Be sure to format to avoid issues. Make sure that you use root, this is a beat do not expect things like Google pay , or whatsapp to work, maybe they will work I don't know. My cellular service gets LTE, I can send and receive text, and I can use Hangouts.
Awesome job mate. That's really cool. The description you gave and the steps provided, helps a lot.
Yes, not all of us understand Chinese, so it will be difficult to read what they say , but still, I will wait for the launch on Xiaomi.eu, even though, I know that Root was already working on Android 10 since a few days ago.
What bugs have you encountered so far? You say that Mobile Data works, Calls and SMS. Dark Mode, and apparently everything.
What about the Camera? Are there any big differences?
Now, replying to @Kurz97 : Do you wanna know why I bought a phone with a MIUI interface? Because I like it. Don't get me wrong, I worked with AOSP a lot of time, and the beauty of Pure Android. Pay attention, Pure, means Pure, no mods, no changes in the UI, just plain simple. Only changes are Root, Adaway, and that's it.
Second, there are plenty of Rom's to choose from for MI 8, most of them, based on AOSP and the changes that the developers enable. I have tried as said before, Pixel Experience, and it's gorgeous. I really love the transition from the recent apps, and it's a very smooth Rom as well. But the fact that I can choose to have a MIUI based Rom or a AOSP it just makes it so much better.
In the past, I owned a Nexus 6p, and guess what? There was no MIUI for it. I was stuck with AOSP. So for me, the fact that I can choose from two distinguished interfaces, it's always better than being stuck to just one, isn't it? Have a good day

I came here to tell you know that it's Q. However, I was going to attach a screenshot and it is in 9 WTF. Okay, I just found out from the Mi Forum that this initial and maybe the next few releases are 9. However, Q is definitely coming once the wrinkles gets ironed out. Apparently there are a lot of problems Q right now.
@ eternitys : I was certain that I saw 10 under Android Version, I don't know how I messed that up. Q is coming and this build is still worth seeing. but it is a hassle to get working. However, it is working flawlessly with Google services once I froze the Xiaomi services. Maybe wait for Xiaomi.EU

Be sure to first uninstall chinese apps, then freeze some of the Xiaomi updater services.. This is done most easily with App Quarantine.
Next, download and install all google apps that you typical use and give them all permission and at least temporarily turn off battery manager. I did this and will supposedly get 12 hours SOT in regular mode.
For contact you need to ad your Google account, it's in settings.

Question OnePlus Launcher

Maybe I didn't search hard enough, but anyone know if it's possible to install the OnePlus launcher on the Pixel 6 Pro? I successfully installed, but it refused to load, even one install that was reported to work on any Android phone. I'm using ProtonAOSP with gapps.
I bought a Pixel 6 Pro out of love for its superior night camera which is fabulous for catching northern lights here in Alaska, but I absolutely love the OxygenOS launcher on my OnePlus 8 Pro. It's a weird request, I know.
All I have to say is,"why?"
Coming from One+ and Samsung..... All users flash roms to come to a Pixel UI and you want a OP launcher on a Pixel? I'm stumped
I'd recommend Nova7 as it's a better fit for phones than OP launcher.
If it's a tinkering matter I totally understand, but, OP on Pixel?
You can also try lawnchair launcher 12. I was missing a few things after moving from 1+ 8 pro to P6 but lawnchair did the trick for me. Basically a pixel launcher with some more customization.

Which features exactly are you looking for?
There are several available launchers on a Pixel, I can't think of any feature set that OP has that is not available, since you can customize about anything, including icons and how animations/gestures work.
As others have said. What's the point?
Anyway, installing the APK will not be sufficient as the OnePlus launcher also relies on a number of native libraries.
You will need figure out exactly which libraries and make them available in /system/lib(64) via a Magisk module.
Too much hassle for what ...
Specifically, I really like this one touch close all apps button. It's a good visual decluttering for me versus memory issue. If I feel overwhelmed by everything I have open, tap the one button and it all feels clean again.

I'll give it a look.
Closing the apps in that way is not recommended and actually worsens battery use. Doesn't do anything for memory use either really as the phone has plenty and manages it well enough. This is why it has been gotten rid of in later versions of Android.

Eh, I charge it enough. It really is more of a psychological visual decluttering for me. I know, it's really best to let Android manage your open apps.

One thing i like most about One plus launcher is to hide apps with fingerprint.
Left swipe to reveal but with fingerprint.
Is there any launcher which has this feature?
Check out Ruthless Launcher
Google Play Link
It has a clear all button on the left most page of the app switcher.
Also has app locker function with fingerprint unlock.
Dev is really responsive on Telegram and the app receives frequent updates.
It's customisable - app icons support, grid options etc, loads of features including At-A-Glance and Google Feed etc. Been using it for a few years now.
