Any way to get OTP updates with TWRP recovery? - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

I have my phone rooted but I managed to fake its status to official to get updates.
I manage to get it downloaded but it gets stuck when in recovery which is expected.
Is there a way to install the updates with custom recovery?
Thank you in advance!

If the OTA update had been successful it would have replaced TWRP with stock recovery anyway most likely

You can try to do a Backup with twrp, then update with odin, flash twrp again and then reload you old data from the Backup. Make sure to Backup ur internal Storage, since twrp doesn't do that!!

Should be fine updating with Odin and still have all data as long as HOME_CSC is used, would have to flash TWRP and root again though, used to do this with my S5 each update

No, on the s9 it will encrypt the data partition again, so you have to delet it afterwards if you want to root again.

Thank you guys!

What format option did you select in TWRP and hope you didn't accidently remove your OS? The device could fail to boot if you don't have an OS installed. You may be able to flash a complete stock restore image via TWRP. Would you recall what Android version you were on before the brick? Also what is your phone model and carrier?

Mine was ATT S3 I747 with Android 4.3 system. I did wipe my OS during recovery. That caused the whole problem. Then I use TWRP to flash a system and a kernel in. I was unable to flash bootloader and modem in; I did not know what is the problem. The weird thing is that I successfully start my phone and used it for a while. When I rebooted it, it dies again. I tried to install the some boot update in this January. It never works again. Any advise?

You can try flashing a complete stock system to get your phone back to working condition. Since you already had 4.3, flashing zips often fails if there is a bootloader incompatibility. The stock restore should do it. Please go to the following thread ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2658486
Download the stock restore zip to your PC. Use another device or something to load it to a (micro) SD card. Insert the card into your phone. Boot into recovery mode and flash from TWRP. When done, wipe your cache/dalvik and reboot to system. Let's know if this works for you.

[Q] Updating FW. Re-rooting & Recovering Needed ?

My tablet is currently rooted and I'm downloading a new FW from SamMobile.
After I install the update via Odin, will I need to re-root and also add TWRP back onto the device or are those kept in place ?
Thank you.
Yes you will need to reroot and reinstall twrp. Odin flashes system, modem, bootloader, and recovery. All my data stayed, but I like a clean flash so I did a factory reset as well.

[Q] Getting back root on DE?

My Developer edition Note 4 starting boot looping. I used Odin to reinstall a stock recovery tar and ended up with N910vvru1anj5 baseband version with no root nor TWRP. I finally got odin to work to install twrp 2.8.5. However whenever I try to boot into recovery I get the Samsung recovery and not the TWRP recovery. The Samsung recovery shows to apply update when it comes up. Superuser does not work and I do not have root.
I have a twrp backup on my sd card and the Samsung recovery sees it but I assume that it will not install it properly.
Why is TWRP not working and how do I get back to root. Is there a problem with the rom I have installed?
When I go into download mode it still shows deveoper edition.
Thanks
I did install the 1st update for LP by mistake but was not able to install TWRP prior to the install nor did I have root.
Does it still show Mode: Developer in Download after you did the update? If it does it should still be a DE. Did you back up the aboot partition? Here is where you need to go to do it. If you have it backed up you can always get back the developer mode.
Maybe if you wipe data then reflash the stock recovery it might work. Go into Settings/ Backup and reset and do a Factory data reset. I've never worked in stock recovery but I think it's possible in there.
If you can get this back you need to do that aboot backup.
Go into stock recovery and factory restore then flash TWRP, you should be good

It still show developer mode. I did backup the aboot. My phone is working ok with current rom but I miss Titanium Backup with unrooted phone.
When there is a new Lollipop Rom for DE I will do a factory reset and see if I can get back to TWRP and root with Lollipop. I hate having to restore all my apps and settings after a factory reset.

Do I need to revert to read only ?

Hi,
I've just bought a Nexus 5X and wanted to root it with systemless method for being able to get OTA in futur.
I've booted to TWRP to flash SuperSU zip but I've made the mistake to use the slider when TWRP ask if I want to keep the system as read only.
Is there an easy way to revert back without the reflashing the rom ?
And is there a way to boot to TWRP from android (if i keep the. .img on my phone) ?
Thank you

If you had TWRP touch your /system in R/W mode even if it made no changes, the system partition is tainted (there is meta-data that changed)
The only practical way to get back to untainted /system is to flash the stock system.img. The flashing is simple, but it might take a little time to download the factory image and extract the system.img.
I usually keep twrp in the recovery partition, probably chainfire has something to boot twrp directly. I do know that if you boot twrp over usb there is a problem where it doesn't accept your pin/pattern/pass to decrypt the user partition. I don't know if it suffers the same problem through other booting methods.
BTW even with systemless root, you cannot flash the differential OTA you receive over the air directly. You need to restore the stock boot.img before flashing the OTA.
The FULL OTA you get from the factory image website, on the other hand, can flash over anything, regardless of whether you have boot, system, or vendor modified.
Thank you for the clear answer

The command
Code:
[I]fastboot boot <img file name>[/I]

How to install OTAs after installing twrp?
You need to flash stock boot.img, as TWRP gets installed to the boot.img on your phone. But you need to do it on the right partition otherwise you won't get the updates. Also if you've tampered with system or any other partition of the device, you need to remove them. To get rid of all the steps, just flash the stock rom via MiFlash (you'll lose your data so take a backup).

You don't neccesary lose your data with MiFlash, just choose the option without relock/wipe.

I need to know where to flash the twrp and where to flash stock boot.img when installing OTA
Yesterday I flashed patched boot img using the command: fastboot flash boot patched boot img, without choosing a partition
I made a guide for doing OTA with TWRP and Magisk. You should be able to follow it and just ignore the Magisk bits. The start covers restoring the boot partition.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/how-to/10-0-4-0-to-10-0-7-0-ota-keeping-magisk-t3916863/
Note that I normally get a boot loop after installing TWRP and reinstall magisk as a fix. I'll assume you have your own way to install TWRP.
