Ofc.. That is because TWRP is gone. There is no seperate recovery partition. If you want to boot TWRP, you better boot into bootloader and use "fastboot boot <TWRP image>" to boot TWRP.

I found a way to do this, when booting from TWRP all I needed to do was boot to slot B [ as I knew my OS was on slot A]

This was still a bit hit and miss
now I'm powering off in TWRP - going into fastboot and typing fastboot set_active b

Flash Custom Recovery but Recovery is still Stock

So, I have the X9046 variant, and I've tried to use the TWRP recovery here.
I went into fastboot, did fastboot flash recovery <recoverynamehere>.img, with no errors. But, when I reboot into recovery it goes into the stock recovery.
I even did fastboot boot <recoverynamehere>.img, and it would just be stuck in fastboot, until I forced a reboot.
Any ideas?

I've used that before, and I've had the same problem.
No error during process ?
What are your build ?
stock or custom rom ?
Did you try to unlock bootloader ?

If you're running ColorOS, there might be a script that's part of ColorOS that restores the stock recovery. Not sure. (It's a common thing to see in most OEM firmware releases)

How to turn off updating the stock recovery on Oxygen CMB 3.5.2?

As the title says: How to turn off updating the stock recovery on Oxygen CMB 3.5.2? Everytime I flashed TWRP and booted into it and then booting in system and booting back in recovery it automatically updates the stock Oneplus recovery. A real pain in the ass because when i want to flash something i always need to flash it again.

Head to this thread ->http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/how-to-dirty-flash-oxygenos-3-5-2-t3462288
it has updater-script.zip in the attachments.
Download it and unzip it,
Open OxygenOS Rom using 7zip or winrar,
goto \META-INF\com\google\android
replace updater-script file.

Copy the recovery to your internal storage. After flashing the rom, select "install image" in twrp and then flash the recovery image. Reboot. Done.
And if you don't wanna go that way, then flash rom, flash supersu, boot. Install flashify, flash twrp. Done.

U guys don't get me right? The stock recovery automatically gets updates. For example I flash twrp and boot into it. Then booting into system and then rebooting in recovery again. Then twrp is gone and it boots me into stock recovery again.

You didn't get me, mate. After flashing the rom don't reboot your phone. Right after flashing the rom via twrp, flash twrp via twrp itself. Idk which part you don't understand because I'm on 3.5.2 with twrp.
Did you try fastboot method to flash TWRP ( fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.2-19-oneplus3.img ) ?

so after you flash,
did you boot into recovery, rather than booting into OS?
Flash the modified TWRP, once you are in the modified TWRP, flash the normal TWRP, voila, you keep twrp and 3.5.2

I first booted into recovery. I know that if you first boot into OS it replaces it by the stock recovery but this isn't going on here.

Recovery won't boot

So here is the thing. I'm on CB 3.5.2 and would like to switch to OOS 3.2.6. So went on my pc and flashed the latest twrp with fastboot. It wouldn't boot and stayed at the 1+ logo. So thought maybe switching back to the modified twrp would do its job. It did and booted but you can't flash other zips with this recovery, so the next thing I did was putting the latest twrp img on my phone to flash it manually in twrp. And again it wouldn't boot. So I have no clue ATM on how to get the latest TWRP on my oneplus 3. You guys do?
I am having a similar situation. I was on FreedomOS 1.4.4. I tried out CB 3.5.2. Flashed the modified TWRP. Everything works. Now I tried to flash my back up of Freedom, would not boot, could not get back to recovery. Tried flashing official, nothing. Reflashed the modified TWRP, booted fine to recovery, and is restoring my CB 3.5.2 backup.
What did me and @Roykooiman do wrong?
What do I need to do to restore my back up? Sounds like we have a similar situation.
Latest twrp being twrp the 19 version in the 3.5.2 thread??

You need to be on the modified twrp 3.0.2-19 in order to flash anything back from 3.5.2
Download it here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24727376692773162
I am not sure if this person has taken a permission to distribute

Ok the the modified twrp 3.0.2-19 would not flash the other roms.
i believe @eng.stk only made it to flash 3.5.2
Thus you can miove back to the official 3.0.2-1

That's the point. The official 3.0.2-1 won't boot. Only the modified does.

If you are on 3.5.2 use the modified twrp to restore old nandroid or flash 3.2.4 and then flash back the official twrp

Flash the modded twrp from fastboot. Then flash a rom in twrp. Twrp is in the 3.5.2 thread i think.

The first boot after flashing TWRP need to be into recovery so TWRP could use his scripts to block the automatic restore of the stock recovery.
Also try the last TWRP version 3.2.1

I only use
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
Then
Code:
fastboot reboot
Entering recovery with the volume up key (at the same time that you click enter into adb)
Then into recovery reboot.
After booting into recovery install supersu (flash zip file) ,then boot into system.. try it..
