I'm on Whyred in the U.S.. I unlocked my bootloader today after the two week waiting period then tried to install TWRP with ADB command lines and got the
"FAILED (remote: Anti-rollback check failed)" error so I then attempted to install TWRP through the TWRP recovery itself but accidentally ticked "Boot" as the destination. Now my phone will only boot into TWRP recovery and I can't get into MIUI 9.6.3.0 anymore! What can I do to bring my phone back?

Download the miui 9.6.3.0 rom, extract boot.img from that, copy it to phone, flash it in the boot partition, voila.

It worked! You're a lifesaver, man. Thought for sure I had FUBARed my new phone. I used an OTG USB stick to flash the boot.img from.

Glad I could help. Next time, be more careful. ??
I don't think I'd be monkeying around so much with my new phone if Xiaomi didn't make it so damn difficult to install TWRP recovery on their "anti-rollback" roms now. It's impossible to install TWRP using adb now because of the ""FAILED (remote: Anti-rollback check failed)" error and even installing TWRP Recovery through TWRP doesn't seem to work, or at least I can't figure out how to do it (it reboots to stock recovery). Bah. I think we need an updated guide or something.

You need to flash lazyflasher after you flash TWRP within TWRP. So that MIUI won't replace it with its stock recovery every time.

Okay, I finally figured out the problem. I was installing lazyflasher right after installing TWRP Recovery and got no errors, but every guide I've read has been telling me to press both "power" and "volume +" until I see the Mi Logo then release "power" while continuing to press "volume +" until the TWRP recovery screen shows up but every time I did that it would boot right into Android. But on my phone I have to release both buttons as soon as I see the Mi Logo and then it will boot into TWRP. So that was what was stumping me. Now it's all sorted and I just made my first Backup with TWRP so all is golden now
Thanks for all your help.

I have one final question which you might be able to answer: if I wanted to re-lock the bootloader and unroot my device back to factory defaults, I heard I can just flash the MIUI 9.6.3.0 rom over my existing install of MIUI 9.6.3.0. Where would I download the correct rom for that for my Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (model #: M1803E7SH) for the GSM Unlocked Global version I have?

Download fastboot ROM and flash it using MiFlash, you have to select clean all and lock option to relock bootloader
en.miui.com/a-234.html for fastboot ROM. Latest ROM version is 9.6.4
http://en.miui.com/download-342.html#508 for recovery ROM

My bootloader is unlocked.
After installing PIE update to MIUI Global 10.3.1.0 Stable, when I try to boot OrangeFox recovery ver. R9.0-2 for Whyred using fastboot command "fastboot boot recovery.img" in CMD ( the result is shown below), the phone does NOT boot in OrangeFox recovery. It just remain stuck on MI logo after booting ...
C:\platform-tools>fastboot boot recovery.img
Downloading 'boot.img' OKAY [ 0.951s]
booting OKAY [ 0.157s]
Finished. Total time: 1.158s
Kindly advise on how to resolve the issue
Did you temporarily deactivate the Anti-Rollback-Feature with
>fastboot flash antirbpass dummy.img
where you will find the dummy.img in the official download of the Xiaomi firmware before trying to boot into recovery?
This needs to be done in the same fastboot-session that you want to boot into recovery.

Many thanks for the advice. Worked like a charm. :good:
No, I did NOT deactivate the Anti-Rollback-Feature which was causing the problem.
In the past, whenever I installed custom recovery on my device including the first time, I did NOT have to flash dummy.img as my device booted into custom recovery without flashing dummy.img.
P.S.: I used dummy.img from this thread:

ONLY IF you have Unlocked-Bootloader, then you can use this MIUI Flashing Guide- Method 2: Fastboot Update to unbrick your device.
Please carefully chose the firmware version (Global / India) to download the fastboot stock ROM for your device.

Great that it solved your problem!
As addendum: The Anti-Rollback (afaik) has to be disabled every single time the recovery is changed/updated. This caught me off guard as I wanted to update TWRP from within the offical TWRP app. This failed and made my recovery unusable (Although I could still normally boot into system).
So let this be a cautionary tale to people.
I can't boot to my custom recovery in my redmi note 5. it is booting to the original recovery. I tried TWRP and REDWOLF recoveries . It will boot in the first time, then I reboot my phone after that when I reboot, it is booting to the original recovery. Same happened when I tried RED WOLf recovery. Pls help me.

After flash twrp, just flash magisk zip through twrp recovery...
I never had a problem with root, I'm going through hell on my friend's cell phone, I install twrp everything ok, no error message, but when I restart both by command and manually to recovery mode, twrp is not installed, before anything, i'm not stupid, my whole life messed with root, rom editing etc, simply on redmi note 8 pro, when you install it via fastboot to twrp, it just won't go, and yes, on cmd / cell shows everything ok, that everything was installed correctly and without error, the problem is when it restarts, both in automatic mode using the fastboot boot twrp.img commands and when pressing the Power with the volume up, and yes, when installing it I did the fastboot flash recovery twrp.img and yes, the file is the correct one, and yes I already downloaded several types of twrp to my device and yes, my bootloader etc. everything is unlocked and I have already reinstalled the rom stock for the latest version and have already done wipe, nothing resolves this hellish problem of not installing twrp on my redmi note 8 pro friend....
Remembering, I've used several types of twrp here for the for the mod, flashing along with k vbmeta etc, nothing solves that

I have the same problem. I have MIUI 12.0.5.0. QGGMIXM and I have tried TWRP 3.5.0_9-0 and TWRP 3.3.1-unofficial. I have flashed both via fastboot with vbmeta extracted from corresponding ROM.
After flashing, I launched
Code:
fastboot reboot recovery
so the device reboots but twrp is not showing, instead it reboots itself into system. At this point if I launch
Code:
adb reboot recovery
the stock recovery appears.
Moreover, I have successfully tried to flash TWRP 3.3.1-unofficial on MIUI 10.0.6.0 via the same procedure. This makes me think it has something to do with the latest MIUI. Anyone has an insight?
I have found this

No, for root and recovery only and stock miui you can follow this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...de-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-root-t3995919
If you're on Android 10, flash this recovery instead of the guide :

Antibrpass dummy.IMG BTW..
Wow that's weird 2nd report that twrp is not working ... Khmm ..that's what I do the 1st thing after unlocking bootloader... Idk something is missing or there is new ABR .. Really weird need new whyred to test...
Enter fastboot mode, on your PC use the command "fastboot reboot", your phone should reboot, it will try to re-enter TWRP, do not allow that, try to re-enter fastboot mode, use the command "fastboot continue" and it should boot normally.

You need to boot twrp before booting muiu. Becasue after first boot miui replaces recovery with stock one.
boot recovery after flashing it and flash magisk, then factory reset device to avoid any crashes.
