I just purchased a Verizon VS996 upgrading from my G3. It's been a couple years since I have rooted and flashed a Rom so before I go any further I have a couple questions.
I located the root thread (on xda) and plan on rooting
1. What Rom that is stable as a daily driver do you recommend?
I'm not looking for all the bells and whistles just something with no/very bloatware. I rely wifi tethering via foxfi a lot and will use the audio via usb to my head-unit. It also has to play well with Android Auto (I'm new to that).
Any advice/recommendation's is much appreciated.

DotOS works really well when I used it on my vs996, but I hear if you crossflash to us998 first, ROMs work better.

What does crossflash mean?
VS996 on stock rooted rom here. I stayed here because I want to keep VOLTE compatibility, particularly since VZ will be dropping standard calling at the end of the year, so you will HAVE to have VOLTE to make calls after that. AFAIK, stock is the only place VZ-VOLTE works.
It's easy enough to debloat further if you want. Just remember to leave the MyVerizon app active, as this is where the VOLTE functionality seems to reside.
Also, when rooting, be sure to follow the WTF thread (specifically post 193 by ChazzMatt). Any other thread is probably inaccurate. Print it out, read it, then read it again... THEN do the steps. It's pretty simple (even though the post is long... but that's because it's VERY detailed).

Convert to another firmware.
For VS996, you have to do that at least temporarily anyway -- when unlocking bootloader and installing TWRP. But then you can flash back to latest VS996 firmware via TWRP-flashable zip (built like a ROM), to run stock rooted firmware.
I suggest you do that for a little while anyway, to get a baseline comparison to any ROMs you then may flash. Custom ROMs are a work in progress. What works on stock (LG camera, DTS 3D Surround sound, and for Verizon users having cellular data effortlessly) may not work on AOSP/Lineage custom ROMs -- but devs are always improving their releases all the time. This is not a criticism of any devs.

Yeah, when Verizon CDMA is retired end of this year, and VoLTE is mandatory, that's going to be interesting time for any Verizon users on custom ROMs...
VERIZON CDMA Network Activation Retirement
https://www.verizonwireless.com/support/knowledge-base-218813/
Verizon Wireless is retiring its CDMA (3G) network at the end of 2019.
Current users of CDMA-only devices or 4G LTE voice-capable devices that do not support HD Voice service can continue to use their current devices until we retire our CDMA network, or can change devices.

Rooted Verizon VS996 V30 users won't have to change "devices" when CDMA ends, but if they are on AOSP/Lineage custom ROMs they will have to change back to V30 rooted stock firmware... However, with Magisk mods like Anxious V30, rooted stock firmware is very good.

Are you reading the instructions on web browser or app? XDA app truncates long posts, randomly skipping entire paragraphs. Read in web browser.
Also you should print out the Instructions so you can read them well.
Nothing is missing. There's links to download what you need. Maybe you are skipping the part where you have to Frankenstein your phone temporarily to US998?
SOME of the instructions are a decision tree: If this, then do X. If that, then go to next section.
In the WTF instructions, having a VS996, it should force you to the Frankenstein instructions. When you finish that step, then return to WTF.

This is in Section 3, Prep.
The link to US998 Oreo KDZ thread is there. When you go to the thread, at the top it gives you more details that your want US998 20A or 20B, for the bootloader unlock part. Both US998 20A and 20B are pre-July 2018 firmware with fastboot flash commands.
However if you read more in the instructions, it tells you what you have to do to be able to flash the US998 20A or 20B...
After bootloader unlock and TWRP installation, you can then convert back to VS996 firmware (if you wish) via TWRP flashable zip. That's also covered in the Instructions, towards the end as "Extras".
I'm assuming LGUP is the program (for windows) which is used to push everything to the phone? Post 193 says nothing about unlocking the bootloader so is that another step?
Can someone help me with the specifics of this: "1) Download and install REGULAR LGUP and then go the LGUP folder on C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP and replace the "normal" files with the Dev Patched files (attached to this post)."
Thanks

Little confused by your question. Bootloader unlock as well as installing TWRP and rooting is the whole point of WTF instructions in post 193.
Section 5 is titled: 5: LET'S GO -- UNLOCK BOOTLOADER
THERE is the bootloader unlock, then followed by Section 6, which is TWRP installation and root.
Up until then you have been making decisions, preparing. Someone with a European H930 on May 2018 firmware is in a different situation than someone with Sprint LS998 on 2019 firmware. So, we have to get everyone to the "same place", before we can unlock the bootloader.
In the opening paragraphs, I tell people they need pre-July 2018 Oreo firmware with fastboot flash commands.
That's what the sections previous to Section 5 are, getting everyone to THAT same starting line.
Why don't we move the dicussion over to the WTF thread? That's really what you are asking about now.

That's in the Frankenstein instructions. You install regular LGUP, then go to the C drive location listed and copy over the normal files in their locations with the dev patched files. One by one. Windows will ask you each time are you sure you want to do that. If it doesn't ask you, make sure you have the right location.
The patched files are necessary, because "regular" LGUP won't let you crossflash to other variants like we need to do. Think of Dev Patched LGUP as the "pro" version.
I'm sure my continual "simple" questions are frustrating so thank you for your patient responses.

I can confirm this Combination firmware is legit, or at least the one from the AFH link. You must do a factory reset after flash or the phone will not boot, likely due to encryption.
This kernel is permissive, and it does have ADB enabled by default.

When you say likely due to encryption, do you mean encryption already present on the phone or does flashing this encrypt it? I don't believe my phone is encrypted as I haven't enabled any secure unlock system. Or do you mean bootloader encryption. Unless I'm mistaken the phone isn't encrypted until after a secure unlock option is enabled.
I really don't want to go through my phone setup again when root isn't available yet. This just seems like a first step to enable flashing of a rooted firmware.

Since android 6.0, encryption of /userdata is supposed to have been standard. My understanding is that the partition is encrypted at first boot. It's probably encrypted with your personal key after you set a secure lock setting.
Regardless, won't boot without factory reset. You will lose your data if you want to use this firmware, but simply flashing it doesn't format /userdata. I can't say whether or not flashing back to stock triggers automatic factory reset, but sometimes it does.
I did confirm earlier today thought that you can't only flash the kernel. Phone won't boot, regardless of factory reset. Nor will it work with abl.mbn(I assume android boot loader), and xbl ( download mode?) But, the kernel is not fully permissive anyway. /system cannot be remounted rw, and I can't manipulate the files in /dev/block either.

I'd like to try that, but insofar I noticed in Download mode it says the carrier is ATT. I think this might be set in the /efs but I could be wrong. If so, root can help. For the record, Verizon is the same model N950U as ATT.

Could you possibly make a back up and upload it for me before you make any system modifications. I have boost but my original backup got corrupted somehow and I want to make sure what I'm running is the right firmware. I also want a backup of that original firmware. If you could also do me another favor and pull the oem.img and modem.img and upload them along with the recovery.img? I'm making stock ROMs and for some reason a rom made with what I thought was Sprint firmware works fine, but one made with what I thought was Boost firmware gives me a boot loop for some reason and I'm trying to figure out why? I'd really appreciate it. If you don't know how to pull the imgs I can instruct you, it's really simple. Thanks!

Probably, it will bring NCQ26.69-33 to NCQ##.##-35 for Boost. (According to meta file in zip)
"I also want a backup of that original firmware"
Since I've already rooted, unrooted, lost cell service, lost system, and, just today, bringing it back to a usable state, I can vouch for the NCQ26.69-33 located here
Use the RSD XML-to-flash tool. Found it on Google somewhere.
My best advice is to use the "dm-verity-opt-encrypt.zip" located in root guide before any flash, especially if it entails a system related modification (ie magisk, scripts, etc). If ya get a non-flashable state, flash the boot.img again in twrp, reboot and redo the flash "dm-verity-opt-flash.zip"

Using Motorola's company website to get the unlock key and using fastboot to flash, as stated in the rooting guide, is most thorough. Less 3rd party spam too
I have Boost but digging in the device files has shown a lot of 'verizon' being in various system files. Sprint, is Sprint, especially in prepaid flavors, imho.

Yes, the newest Boost firmware is this one from the link posted above.

>> NEW DLL FILE REQUIRED TO FLASH!! <<
You must use LGUP to flash this. If you haven't upgraded your DLL file for LGUP, inside this same archive, you'll find a dll file named LGUP_Common.dll. Place that DLL file in C:\Program Files (x86)\LG Electronics\LGUP\model\common. Just as a precaution, change the extension of the existing LGUP_Common.dll to .bak or something in case this doesn't work for you. After you put the new DLL file in that folder, open LGUP and in the very lower left hand corner of the window, you should see DLL Version 1.0.31.9.
Enjoy! If anyone has any questions, feel free to hit me up!

There are rumors someone cracked the bootloader and rooted a Verizon LG G6, but for their own reason chose not to publish the method. Knowing the person who told me, I have no reason to doubt it. But, no, I don't know how they did it, as I am not a dev.
This of course leads to a bunch of questions. Is it possible some of the 2017 LG flagship (G6, V30) carrier models have ADB flash commands if you can get past the bootloader? We know the T-mobile LG G6 and LG V30 do not, because the bootloader is easily unlocked and they are ADB crippled. We just assumed all the other carrier modes were the same way, because no one has cracked the bootloader and published the results.
Or this person cracked the bootloader and found some other way to root. They didn't go any further than that, but they did unlock the bootloader and root a Verizon LG G6.

That link above discusses it more, but other than that I'm not interested in "proving" anything. I'm not the dev, and he can release what he wants to release. I encourage everyone to buy the "open market" version of the LG V30. That will have guaranteed root, TWRP, ROMs, kernels, etc.
If you want to read where I got it from, read back through my posts. It was discussed in open thread about three weeks ago.
The only reason I'm mentioning it here is it might be relevant to the LG V30, to let people know a carrier branded LG G6 was bootloader unlocked and rooted. If one person can do it, others can.

Dirty Santa exploit cracked the bootloader of the V20 (December 2016). And here (June 2017).
DirtySanta Exploit Unlocks the Bootloader of the LG V20 H990 -- XDA article, June 2017
And the 2016 V20 still had all the ADB flash commands. So, once past the bootloader, you had free reign. That has changed with the 2017 LG flagships, where LG has removed most of the ADB flash commands.
Even this LG V20 method, in a thread started END of August 2017 has as a first step -- RUN Dirty Santa! Even though Dirty Santa/Dirty Cow exploit was now patched, you can swap out modules in the phone, so it will then still run. So, I do not know of any LG V20 that were rooted where the bootloader was not first unlocked -- even if you are replacing out modules with "Engineering" modules or whatever to allow Dirty Santa to still run. If you have other information to the contrary, I would be interested in hearing it.
Now back during the LG G2 and LG G3 era you could root and install TWRP without unlocking the bootloader, but that was back when signed packages were not required.

I'm not a developer, but I research a lot and I have knowledgeable people tell me stuff.
I keep up with LG phones, and I know V20 bootloader was unlocked by Dirty Santa exploit. Which was why I corrected the misinformation that the V20 was rooted without unlocking the bootloader.
Maybe there's another method of rooting V20 of which I'm unaware, but in V20 forum all I see are the links I posted above - which all involve unlocking the bootloader.
But the v30 is too new to have a dirty santa version anyway. And no adb commands.
Unless this makes it on to the lg list for unlocking I dont think it will happen.

Actually, read the whole thread from the beginning.
You can change the firmware, it's relatively easy, the only thing you will be stuck with is the Sprint baseband (i.e. basically, your phone will still use the GSM/4G frequencies enabled in the Sprint baseband). You will also need to manually update the firmware as the OTA will most likely fail because it will be Sprint's OTA as opposed to generic USA retail firmware.
I did this the other day and have today updated to Oreo, it worked ok. So, basic steps are:
1/ Unlock bootloader via Moto website. Follow their instructions.
2/ Download the generic Z2 force firmware from the same thread above, unzip it, and effectively follow reflashing as indicated in the flashfile.xml.
3/ Put the phone into the fastboot/adb mode and use fastboot command to flash.
It goes quickly, of course you need to have Android tools installed (fastboot/adb) and you need to have your phone connected to the PC via USB(-C) cable.
That's pretty much it. As I said, you will be stuck with the Sprint software channel which I don't know how to change. If you figure out, please share...

Thank you!! Ill read it and see
With this software installed, could we downgrade using a flashall? Just in case it's needed for warranty purposes?
I have read something about a new root method.
Is there anyone tried to use this method?
Can it work on our Lg V30?

1) NO, probably won't work on our V30. Runs on Lollipop, and here's no custom Recovery. Most V30 are up to stock Pie.
2) No we don't need and and don't want it.
Every V30 on the planet can be Bootloader unlocked and rooted.
Why would you need another way to root?

* It probably won't work and even if it does...
* you probably won't have DTS Surround Sound nor LG camera fixes which both came with later Oreo.
It's up to you, your phone.
If you do really want a root access without losing warranty or bootloader unlock counter goes up. There are plenty virtualization apps which emulates root access, or even xposed system without altering your actual system. I saw on YouTube, someone using that to cheat pubg mobile. You can find that by these keywords: "pubgm cheat no root" or "pubgm cheat virtual"
There's no root option in my phone
What should I do?

With REAL root available for ALL V30 variants since mid-2018, I confess I don't really understand why this thread was even started in October 2019 (over a year later) -- or the discussion is still ongoing now almost 2020...
Before mid-2018 only those V30 variants (H930, H930G, secretly Open Market US998 -- but only the 64GB variant) approved by LG could have bootloader unlock code and thus root, but thanks to people here on XDA, ALL V30 can have root. We don't need some "fake" gimmick like this. Maybe for other phones something like this is OK, but all V30 variants can actually be bootloader unlocked and rooted.
