worth it to upgrade to one plus 6T? - Google Pixel 2 XL Questions & Answers

I am starting to get bored of this phone. In your guys' opinion, is it worth it to upgrade to the OnePlus 6T? There just aren't that many options for an unlocked phone on Verizon

I've tried the 6T for the same reason - boredom. It's cool at first with the in-display fingerprint sensor, better screen and overall performance, but after 2 weeks I realised that I made it look like my Pixel and I do the same things with it. I'm back on the Pixel now (bought the 6T from a store with good return policy). The OnePlus 6T it's a great phone, but if you are bored I don't think you'll find something different in the 6T since it's really close the the stock Android experience.

awesome, okay thanks. I guess I'm basically looking for a phone with better specs. Not sure if we're going to wait for the pixel 4, get the new one plus phone, or get this 6t

I think the 6T would be a side grade. I would personally wait for the pixel 4 xl. I've tried the Xiaomi Mi 9 which should be an upgrade in every way, but it didn't feel the same. It wasn't polished like the pixel was.

If u want to upgrade do it but be smart about it, wait till the oneplus 7 comes out and watch the oneplus 6t price drop. I wouldnt recommend u getting a 1000 dollar phone. Just not worth that price in my opinion.

Guys I also thinking of upgrading to s10e. Do you think that I will regret? Size and full flat screen really attracts me. Only camera and lack of front facing speakers are bothering me.

Then don't get it. Better wait for the Pixel 4 or even for next year, imo.

What about p30?

The same ???
The P30 has a locked bootloader, a weird and forked OS, delayed updates etc. Not my cup of tea...

I will wait for pixel 4 I think. Which is very long time to wait. More than normal release date because it is not sold in my country

I've gone back and forth with my 6T. I'm only on my 6T because Pokemon go won't work with beta Q..
I went back to my other because
1) wanted ambient display
2) better camera
3) original quality photo backup but this one is minor
4) front facing speakers. Kept covering it on the 6T
5) lighter and easier in the hand
6) don't have to worry missing notifications because of aggressive memory management on the 6T
6T has
1) more screen real estate.
2) better gestures but resolved by installing vivid gestures on pixel
3) better battery life
4) brighter screen

So are you getting it ?

Yes ? No ? And why ? :fingers-crossed:
Yes. My G5 has not survived the numerous accidents it had too well, and the OnePlus 5T is still a "budget" option when compared to the Honor and LG alternatives.
Would I be crazy to sell my s8 to get 5t

Nope. S8 is severely locked down from what I understand. I take software over hardware any day of the week. UNLESS it has gotten to the point where the hardware is making the software experience abysmal... rip little Droid Bionic loved ya <3
op5t is the most attractive phone on the market in 2017 even it still has huge bezels.
unfortunately, it has not wireless charging and ip68.
I'm stuck between ugly sams note8 with the best hardware and the worst software and medium hardware and one of the best software on op5t.
definitely, I want to get op5t when it will have unlocked bootloader, root, custom recovery, and custom rom.
Yes I will, if my current 5 sells (put it up for sale a couple days ago). I wouldn't mind paying the difference after selling my 5 to get that taller screen! And I'm also just the type of person who enjoys having the latest model, despite upgrades being minor
I'm buying it. I'm using a 3T now so it's a true upgrade. Bring on the custom ROMs. The 5T is an affordable alternative to the Pixel 2 XL but with better hardware.
Oneplus is known for pushing this out to developers quickly. Why you think they can Release a phone every 6 months. (I'm speculating Win Win for Consumer and developers.
I'm now debating between this phone, the V30 or the Razer Phone. Not too sure which one yet. Why is OP still using a 1080p screen though?
I have the OnePlus 5 now and just put it up for sale for 400. Hope it sells. If so I'll grab the 5T with that money. The screen and upgraded camera I will be happy with, the low light on the 5 is just garbage. Still not happy that the 5T didn't add OIS but it's I'm okay w/ the video looking a bit odd, not shakey but just odd, and would help with low light if it had OIS. But whatever! Yeah I want the upgrade.
My Moto x pure died in a crash a 2 weeks ago. Since then I hold myself on buying anything till 5t s release. Well I guess it’s the one , I’m definitely going to buy it wish it was on sale right now
Yep. Pixel 2 XL is already for sale.

TWRP is already released for the 5T, and I'm sure root will be as easy as fastboot oem unlock.
But for this post, yep I'm buying one on the 21st! I might sell my current OnePlus 5.
I'm using a Nexus 6p and can't wait till tax time cause I'm buying this bad boy...high end specs at 500$ damn Skippy son!

- To keep the price down
- Better performance
- Better battery life
I will not. The 5 is already a big phone. I am at my limits with reach on it. The 5t is physically taller with a taller screen. No thanks. Plus I don't buy into the no bezel gimmick. To me, it's just vanity. It adds nothing to the actual experience. It's just something you hope people notice. Look at me! No bezels! I've never once thought to myself while actually using my phone, "man these bezels are just so ugly and huge". No, I actually don't see them... at all. I'm looking at my screen, not my bezels. And I like my fp sensor on the front. I can't tell you how many times I check my phone while it's laying face up on my desk or table. I might consider it if it did something amazing that the 5 didn't, but it's literally the same phone with a stupid tall screen and apparently a worse camera.
I'm not sure. At the moment I have the OP3. I will get the HTC U11+ or the OP5t.
It's a very hard decision
No Oreo. No treble. No sale.

Is it really worth buying a One Plus 5T

I'm with a huge doubt, which one to buy? an OP5T or a GP 2 XL, what I most want is to have a good battery life. But I've been thinking and looking for forums for 3 days but I do not decide. I would be very grateful for your answers and recommendations.
The only reason I was considering a Pixel 2 XL was for the better camera. Aside from that, I don't think the huge price jump from the 5T to the 2 XL is worth it.
Both phones have the same internals and you don't have to worry about potential blue tint shift/screen burn-in issues with the 5T.
Also, if you're big on flashing, the dev community is usually a lot more populated for OnePlus devices!
Overall though, aside from a mediocre camera, I have no complaints about my 5T, I'm loving it and I'd definitely recommend it over the 2 XL
While the OnePlus 5t is a great phone, I sold it because I just think the LG v30 is the best phone out now.

Well, maybe the best phone out for *you*. Everyone has specifics they're looking for. LG V30 is a great phone, and so is OP5T, and my preferences for me, I need a solid development community.:silly:
I was torn between this exact decision as well myself, given how many hardware issues the Pixel 2 XL is suffering from. Was test driving the 5T the past 2 weeks vs. my current Huawei Mate 9, and in the end, I decided to return the 5T and just ordered the Pixel 2 XL. The new discount Google has on the Pixel 2's helped to drive that decision. Pretty much came entirely down to the camera. The 5T for its price is literally perfect IMO from an overall hardware and software experience, except for the darn camera. I spent a lot of days comparing pics between the Mate 9 and 5T, and there are clearly some shots where the 5T had trouble with in the fine edge details, turning things into that infamous oil painting mess. It's funny because I typically don't obsess over the camera so much, except that when I need a camera, I REALLY need it to capture memorable moments, and I want it to reliably produce the best instant snap picture quality possible, without me having to second guess it. That aside, the 5T's software and hardware has been rock solid stable, insanely fast, and the battery life has just been amazing, easily 2 days for me with regular usage.
The Pixel 2 XL is by far the most I've ever spent on a phone, and I skipped last year's Pixel precisely because of its price. I was on a Nexus 6P till this past summer, when its battery issues finally got too bad...now that was one phone I loved dearly. I've never kept a phone longer than 6 months till the 6P, which I bought at launch and kept for a year and a half. So here's to hoping I can live with the Pixel 2 XL's flaws for me to love everything else about it. I really don't want to ever go to a Samsung if I can avoid it, as I hate bloatware phones, not to mention everybody and their dog has a Samsung/Apple nowdays.
I need a development support phone. That means bootloader unlocking to not break safetynet and run custom ROMs/Kernels, not just rooting and breaking stuff like Samsung. V30 LG isn't worth the $800, and V30+ certainly not worth the $900+ IMHO.
For the money, I would expect more from them all. My only gripe with Samsung, no Bootloader unlocking for US phones...so, it checks all the boxes I have and need.
Otherwise, 5T is a really great phone for the money....only complaint is lack of SDCard, but can run USB-OTG and get around that, wireless charging would be nice. Otherwise, bang for the buck, dev support, can't be beat the 5T.
After having the 5T for some 2-3 weeks now, I would say get the Pixel 2 XL ONLY because better camera and Android updates. But ONLY IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT. Meaning you won't starve yourself or anything if you can get it. If you can truly afford it, you might as well get it.
With that being said, the 5T isn't a bad device at all. OxygenOS is basically stock Android some you coming from a Nexus device, like myself, you'll feel right at home. Especially if you've used LineageOS or some other custom ROM. On the flip side, you'll be stuck on Nougat 7.1.1 for a little bit. As I've mentioned before, coming from a Nexus device, whenever I heard about new Android updates I immediately flashed it, because I could. Because it was available to us like that. With the 5T, I had to switch gears and rely on ROMs to get back to the latest and greatest, or just stay on the current version of OOS. Which isn't bad by any means. I would've been happier if the 5T had shipped with at least 7.1.2 on board, because there's some functionality there that makes the previous version bearable. 7.1.1., not so much. But it is what it is. Substratum themes don't really work too well either.
But that's mostly cosmetic stuff. So, again, if you can actually afford it, get the P2XL. But if you wanna be SMART about your money, get the 5T. Aside from a lacking camera and lack of immediate Android OS updates, there's truly not much you're missing out on with the 5T compared to the P2XL. Outside of Pixel-exclusive features, that is.

Did you know that the price of Google Pixel 2 XL has fallen by nearly 45% because people are not purchasing it and many who purchased are returning it back within the refund period of 10 days given by Amazon. Need I say more?

Here in Canada, after tax, the Pixel 2XL is roughly $1275 (as of this posting). The total I paid for the OnePlus 5T was $730 after the student discount and tax. That's still about a $500+ jump in price, still not worth it for me at least.
I really don't have a lot of options. Coming from a bootlooped 5X (reason why I will never a LG phone) and really wanted that stock feel with lots of custom development. Only choice for me was 5T and Pixel 2, and sadly Pixel 2 doesn't sell where I am.
And I really don't care that much about wireless charging, camera or the 1080P display. Quite an easy choice for me.
I really think it's worth it.
the oneplus 5t camera is its biggest weakness. i really hate the camera and i dont even use the camera that much. coming from a samsung S6, even the S6 takes a fat pile of dookie all over the 5T camera

So brother, in a few words you recommend me for pixel 2 xl? If this the possibility of saving money I do it (and I go for the 5t) but if I really have such a bad experience with the camera OF 5T. Well, I think I would go by PIXEL XL2 . (I come from the s7 and I guess the 5t will have a very bad camera)

The camera isn't necessarily bad, but isn't good either. It's just an average camera in my opinion. If you're not super picky on getting super clean shots then I think you'd be more than okay with it

I hope my perspective helps your decision. I'm smartphone power user. I don't play games but I am multitasking a lot. Whatever I can do on the move using the phone, without turning my PC or laptop, I'll do it. E.g. 3 browsers installed with around 10+ pages on each, diverse google drive docs running scripts, 350 apps, you name it, it's on my phone. So long I can remember, I was looking for the best phone with the best community (phone customization and fixes), and therefore switching between Google Nexus/OnePlus phones. I wanted the best, regardless of price so I was ready to go with Pixel XL2. Until I saw the screen issue. If you are looking at XL2 from an angle, any angle, like have it on your desk, table, sofa, screen will turn bluish. That alone was enough for me to look for better phone. Another thing to keep in mind is that Pixel XL2 has only 4 GB of ram and that would not be enough for me. I went with OnePlus 5T and I don't regret it a bit. Yes, camera is not as good, no OiS, no optical zoom either, and I'll do with Gmod camera or open camera. Can't have everything, I guess.

Opinion: Is the OP5T worth buying over current Pixel XL?

I currently have Google Pixel XL. Is this phone worth getting over my current phone? I see its a more active community.
It really depends on your wants & needs.
If you need a brighter display, then after modification, the OP5T is noticeably brighter and easier to read under direct sunlight.
If you want a lighter phone, then the OP5T is noticeably lighter.
If you want a faster phone, then in my experience, there is not a noticeable difference. But then I'm not doing any gaming. Just texting and Internet surfing.
If you need a faster file system, then the OP5T is just slightly faster.
I had the Pixel 2 XL for about 3 days and I clearly prefer the OnePlus 5T. Better display, better performance, better loudspeaker, looks better. And the camera of the Pixel 2 XL was not as good as the camera me the Galaxy S8. OnePlus 5T camera is only a bit under them.
Sorry for my bad English. I am from Germany.
I had the galaxy S8 for about 6 month and was happy with it. But then I had the OnePlus 5T for about 2 days to test it. S8 is so slow compared to the 5T... unbelievable. Give it a try and you will see that overall the OnePlus 5T is the better device.
I had the Necus 6 before the 5 T and initially planned to get the Pixel XL 2.
But not even the best camera of all smartphones is worth shelling out 4 digits of dosh...no chance.
And in every other respect the 5T is on par with the Pxl 2
I got this pixel XL off a RMA for the old 6P and I'm just not digging these partitions. And lack of devs I think there are only like 4-5 decent ROMs to choose from. Thanks for the input everyone. Much appreciated
Pixel phones are generally not worth it since google is focusing on gimmicky software instead of hardware and developers as of late. They are expensive phones that try to justify the price with software, rather pay for hardware tbh.
The 64GB Pixel 2 XL is £629 at carphone warehouse right now. The price is coming down.

Ohay, got it.
As was already said, depends what's important to you. I have both the 1st and 2nd gen pixel XL's as well as the op5t. In my opinion, the pixel phones only clearly win in 2 places over the 5t. The monthly security patches and the cameras. The cameras on both pixels are flat amazing, and while the camera on the 5t is nice, it's not quite as good. But I find myself using the 5t the most. The face unlock is amazing, the battery life on the Oreo beta is insane, the phone is insanely slim and fast and I prefer what OnePlus has done with oxygen OS as far as customizations go, over what Google has done. Not to mention, twrp, magisk and Franco kernel just make the op5t rock
Oh, and I also use both an At&t Sim and a TMO Sim in the 5t which I can't do in the pixels.

I have both, you nailed it. If I am going on a trip and going to take a lot of pictures I bring the pixel 2 xl, otherwise I stick with the o5t as my daily driver. The experience is better imo on the o5t.
The charging is way faster on the o5t. The pixel 2 xl has a slow fingerprint sensor and the reaction time of the proximity sensor is slow too. When I am on the call with a pixel and go hang up it takes to long for the screen to light up. No issues on the o5t it's instant. The updates on OnePlus aren't bad either.

Oneplus 5T or wait for next version?

Should I wait until the next version of the Oneplus phone comes out to purchase? Seems like it might be around the corner. I'm really impressed with the specs and features of the 5T. I'm just ready to dump this dang pixel xl. Are all you developers pleased enough with the 5T to upgrade to the next version when it becomes available?
OnePlus seems to iterate their phones every 6 months instead of the typical year. This means that a 'new model' is always just right around the corner. It also seems like (to me anyways) that this drives DEVs away as who wants to develop for a phone that will only be produced for 6 months (or less with the OnePlus 5).
It really depends. I'm happy that LineageOS 15.1 and Franco kernel is out for the OnePlus 5T and I wouldn't want to wait weeks for them to come out for the OnePlus 6. Moreover, as the OnePlus 6 appears to use a notch, I'm happy with my OnePlus 5T for now. It comes down to personal preferences but I wouldn't always bet on the newest and latest devices. It could even be that the OnePlus 6 will be much more expensive or lack a feature you want.
If you do tend to get the OnePlus 6 I would advise you to not buy it instantly. I was happy not to have bought the OnePlus 5 after the jelly scrolling issues (even though I would never have bought it due to the fingerprint sensor being at the front) and I'm happy I got the OnePlus 5T with no issues so far apart from the Widevine L3 problem which I do not care about too much.
This comes for every phone on the market. Should I buy it or wait for next gen.
Do you want it, buy it. Can you wait, wait. Next will always be better I guess.
OP6's screen might be 19/9 or more screen ratio with notch.
Snap 845 for sure.
Good to wait.:fingers-crossed:
I dislike the "notch mentality" and personally probably only use 25% of the power of the Q835. 5t is a solid phone that will last me hopefully the next 2-3 years. If the camera gets a big overhaul I might consider an earlier upgrade but looking at OP's track record I'd doubt it.
I ordered a pair of 5T's. These pixel xl's had to go. Thanks for everyone's input.

Can't find any phone to replace

Hi pixel users,
I want to learn if you are having same thoughts like me. I want to replace my 2017 pixel 2xl but never convinced by any brand that is real update. Google camera( only photo not video) always makes me stick with my device. Pixel 3xl was never upgrade when it first released. Oneplus 7 is still behind when competing the camera. Pixel 4 will be bazel king still and it is not sold in my country Turkey. Galaxy phones are always washed out camera and bad battery with exynos. Huavei having problem with Google so hard to trust. So another year with pixel 2xl probably.
I've had similar conclusion. Pixel 3 - ugly, Pixel 4 - looks like it's gonna be ugly too. OnePlus phones are the closest competitors in my eyes with their clean software and continued long Android updates, but camera still isn't on Pixel level and water and ingress protection isn't IP certified. Samsung's software isn't for me and their update cycle is terrible.
So Pixel 2 for my wife and Pixel 2 XL for me are still one of best phones out there for us, while it's getting Android updates I won't be changing them soon.
These of course are subjective thoughts.

I'm waiting for the OnePlus 7T, should be released around Thanksgiving
Same here. I thought I might have gotten the Pixel 4 but the 2 XL has just been too perfect for me to think about updating.
Pixel 4 XL would be the way to go
I need good camera, so only pixel, samsung or Huawei. I tired of big phones, so thinking about s10e. People talks what oneUI is good and clean like stock and I like what s10e has flat sreen.
I like, what 1.5 year old pixel is fast like new.

I agree with that!
I wish everyone would stop making tall skinny phones already. I love my 2xl performance wise, but sorely miss my Nexus 6 screen. That was the PERFECT size phone. It's bezels are close in size to the 2xl. If only the guts were easily swapped between the two of them!

While I love my P2XL and 3aXL, I would get behind an updated Nexus 6 in a heartbeat! Next to the HTC M7, the Nexus 6 was my absolute favorite device. Would love to get that phone's body with upgraded internals (really wish it was possible to update your device to newer hardware without changing the outside).

I thought to buy one but battery and camera performance is worse then pixel trust me. Size is perfect but has some disadvantages. It ıs also important which region you are from. SD is a lot better than exynos.

I really think that it will be future proof but bezels is making me think and the worst part is the region. It is not sold in my country Turkey. I have a bit hope for this year. They may start selling because 3a and 3axl are great alternatives for Turkish market. I would probably go for pixel 4 if I can.

Camera will be ok, I had samsung top line and I know Samsung's camera.
Yes battery worse, that's main disvadvantage for me.

I'm starting to see a lot of these opinions about the 2xl. Mine has been one of the best phones I've owned. Oneplus 7 pro or pixel 4 are the only phones I would consider.
