Custom Roms - Xiaomi Mi 9 SE Questions & Answers

Considering the Kernel source is already available, how soon could we expect a custom ROM like lineage OS to become available?

Maybe some months
Inviato dal mio MI 6 utilizzando Tapatalk

Is it worth it??
Ive been using this phone with the global one and the only issue I found is the auto brightness. Sometimes the screen is too dark and is not so accurate tbh.
I would like maybe more battery duration but it seems fine (far from my ex phone, a huawei honor play) but in general terms the ROM works pretty good.

so, no kernel sources yet and therefore nobody is working on a custom rom.
are there plans to start so?

Maybe for you it isn't worth..but for us, clean android enthusiasts, we definitely want to get rid of bugged XiaoMeME UI

Lineage os and pixel expirience would be awesome ?

i thought it might depend on the sources that some motivated people are going to build a rom. but yeah i definitely willing to wait for it.

Based on the dev work done with it's predecessor mi 8 se, I'd say there is **** all chance of this phone getting custom roms.
It's a pity, I much prefer the smaller size of this phone, but I'm ****ed if I'm going to have a phone stuck running miui

There was no global version neither release for the Mi 8 SE, things are quite different.
We just have to wait for Qualcomm 712 sources to be released, exactly the same as with the 855.

As stated on another thread, there is no point in waiting for a full ROM when device is Treble enabled.
FlokoROM is already working fine on Mi 9 SE, you can download Aonly GSI img from https://treble.andro.plus/ and flash it.
On top of that, it looks like someone is already reworking the kernel using CAF sources.
For some reference and a full ROM list, you can check https://forum.xda-developers.com/project-treble

Likely not, but why bother. If this device gets traction there will be CM for it but I'm prety sure that won't happen before Xiaomi releases source code. I dearly hope they do that soon, as I've hastily order a Mi 5S yesterday. I hope I'll be able to flash some closer to AOSP ROM as soon as possible. I'm pretty sure I don't really want to use MIUI as my daily driver. I'll surely use it until something better comes along and after I get Google Apps on it.
If someone eventually puts together a CM rom for this device I will try it of course. I try all Roms for whatever device I am on.
That said, I admit that MIUI is not only classy looking, but offers enough customization options to satisfy any modder - my opinion of course.
I have unlocked the bootloader, installed twrp and the latest custom MIUI rom from here and rooted the device. I honestly don't feel like I'm missing anything with this device.
4gb ram, 128gb storage, Snapdragon 821! I easily get about 5.5 hrs sot.
I really like this device. I'm very satisfied.

New Mi 5S Plus - essential first steps

Hello,
I will getting the Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus tomorrow.
What are some of the first things I should be doing? I feel like I will not like the MIUI too much as I have used stock android on my old Nexus and more recently Cyanogen on my OPO. I plan to install Cyanogenmod on the phone as soon as they release it.
I believe I should do the following to prepare for that so that I do not need to start from scratch in the future (unsure of order and how to do it, some advice and guides here would be helpful, as well as an explanation of the purpose of each step):
- install custom recovery (I'm 99% certain I need to do this to install another ROM)
- root the phone (I don't think this is necessary, but allows me to do other things e.g. use Greenify)
- unlock bootloader (not sure what the purpose of this is)
Are there any other steps I should take?
Thanks in advance!

No need to root?
What is mi ui EU rom? I have intl version of the device (Hong Kong). Does this make a difference?
Thanks!
Without unlocking the bootloader, you can't install any custom recovery or custom ROM, just the official Xiaomi releases.
The eu version have less chinese apps and some minor changes compared to the global version. You can check the differences in their website.
Once you have unlocked the bootloader and install twrp, becoming root is pretty easy.

I also use Xiaomi EU. It works great. If you want the UI to look slightly more like a Nexus or Pixel try the "Pixel N" or "Android N" themes.

If you are talking about xiaomi.eu, yes it's different.
It's based on official China ROM and as you can see the release of official Global ROM is lagging behind china rom for both mi5s versions. For example stable for Plus is 8.0.4.0 for Global (I guess just one release) while it's 8.2.2.0 for China.
It's cleaned from Chinese apps, it contains many European languages (including Italian) and gapps.

I'm on 8.0.4.0 of Global Rom and I must admit that this is the first phone which makes me so satisfied. I'm gonna stay close to later products from Xiaomi as long as they keep doing this way.
I don-t understand the different ROM-s.
I now have 8.0.4 Global Stable.
It seems tha a 8.2.2 Global Stable should come out since 20 February (but did not come out)
Then there is a 7.3.9 Global Beta released March 10
http://en.miui.com/thread-534687-1-1.html
But why Beta is a LOWER number (7.3.9 to 8.0.2)???????????
Very confusing

4GB is a lot of Ram in my opinion.
Think if you need 64 or 128 of storage in your phonbe, and make your decision based on that.
As far as I know, for my usage (and I am a heavy user) 4GB of RAM is enough nowadays

Thanks for trying to help. I have now resolved the problem!. The reason phone was not sending was because of 3G signal only at my home. When I tried in a 4G area not far from my location a picture message flew through. Many thanks re whats app .I use same and there is no difficulty sending pictures on it as I Have good broadband 240 megabytes boosted to almost double that with an Asus rt -87 u router and an Asus AC -66 extender. Is there a Custom ROM for Huawei 7X/Mate SE?

Would like to use a clean version of Android instead of the EMUI version that is loaded on all their phones.
Seeing how these phones are identical, figured what would work for one would work with the other.
Thanks for giving me any insight.
Coming from the Galaxy Note 4 - hoping I'm not making a mistake with this phone that is enroute.

Coincidentally, just booted that ROM (on my SE) today. It's very very good, noticed a few minor glitches to do with the camera and navigation (will let them know about em).
I'll admit though, emui8 is growing on me It's certainly better than 5.1 was. Love to see the roms becoming available though. No doubt when updates stop (or before), they will be critical to have.

I don't mind emui except that the power-saver regularly kills tasker, ad-blocking vpns, etc. I've tried everything to exempt them from power saving but no go. The battery life is outstanding though (I usually only lose 15% after a full day's usage), so for average users it's a bonus.

Nothing terribly serious. I didn't use it for long, but the camera option for selfie shutter 'palm to camera' didn't work. Also the recently taken shots didn't show in the bottom gallery (I read this is fixed now). And the navigation arrows at the bottom seemed to not be persistent somehow (after a reboot this was okay).
It's easy to go back to stock, except if you haven't backed everything up, have to reconfigure, add / subtract apps etc.
I'd suggest searching for the openKirin website, they seem to be doing the most development. Also follow their directions, they worked for me and pretty easy.

No, you don't need a custom bootloader.
You only need unlocked bootloader and unlocked frp.
TWRP is not supported on OpenKirin ROMs (especially on 7x twrp won't work).
You just need to flash the .img file through bootloader and then reboot to recovery and do a factory data reset.
Can anyone give me some advice: I have the Mate SE, currently on EMUI 8.0.0.332 (security update available but not installed), with TWRP and Magisk. I would love to install a custom ROM, but the OpenKirin site says TWRP isn't supported. Can I still install one of those builds and just expect no support if something goes wrong, or should I find some way to return to full stock before flashing? And if I need stock recovery, where can I find a download for it? I haven't had any luck on searching here yet.

Pretty much any GSI works so long as you have updated to EMUI 8 sometime in the past.

Any OFFICIAL LineageOS 14.1 users?

Long story short, I'm looking for the most stable and refined custom ROM for the MZP. I'm currently using Alberto97's AOSP 8.1 and while everything is working fine, it isn't really that refined. As it is ported from what I guess is the Google Pixel, the OS thinks that the device is a Google Pixel. For example, when I set up the device, it shows the banner "Finish setting up your Pixel". Also, when I register my fingerprint to unlock the device, the setup shows to use the index finger and touch the sensor located on the rear of the device (like the Pixel's). Charging with the phone powered off is also bugged, as it shows nothing but "Charging ??/100". I know these may seem like small things, but I'm a person with extreme attention to detail (almost borderline OCD) and things like these just bug the hell out of me, even though it isn't the devs fault at all (mad respect to Alberto).
Basically, I want a custom ROM that is MADE for the device, not ported. If you guys get what I mean. Polished is the word, I guess.
Seeing as LineageOS 14.1 is officially supported, do these cosmetic flaws exist? Can any LOS users confirm this? I apologize for bugging this sub with my stupid questions, I just want to settle with my phone once and for all.
Thank you to all for your help!

Hi there,
None of the cosmetic flaws you said exist on the official LineageOS 14.1 ROM. I'm using it for several months now and it is certainly the most polished ROM created for this device.
By the way, I've tested weeks ago Alberto97's AOSP 8.1 and it was a weak experience. It wasn't optimized as I expected, some of the animations were jerky and I noticed multiple bugs.
I definitely recommend using LineageOS 14.1 ROM if you want a good experience. Also, I recommend using 7.1 ROMs instead of 8.0's/8.1's. They are way more stable and optimized.
If you have any question, feel free to ask.

Oh yeah, that's bad.
You should post a message regarding this issue on the Official Lineage 14.1 topic to make the developper aware. I think that's not hard to make the bootloader compatible, it should be some parameters to change

I've been trying to Google ways on how to contact the maintainer but I can't seem to find out how. Can you help me by sending a link on how to message the dev?

I contacted the maintainer and he said it's not as simple as that, as there may be incompatibilities with a bootloader from a different Android version. We're messaging each other for the past few days and he sent me a test build. The flash succeeded, though we are unable to make it boot up.

I asked him yesterday but he said that it's against rules to ask for ETAs (even when I only asked him if it would come out, I didn't ask when :/)
Read the thread, one user already posted his email address here, though don't even try to ask him stuff like that again as surely he will link that to me.

The dev (mccreary) just fixed the issue and official LineageOS 14.1 will now be compatible for Oreo bootloaders on the next build (May 2).
I have sideloaded the Oreo OTA on stock firmware.
Now i want to go back using LineageOS 14.1, anyway to do it?

Lineage 14.1 is Nougat based and it will not flash as it will display bootloader error while flashing in twrp. Wait for Lineage 15 or as djdelarosa25 said [/COLOR]

Is there any news for Lineage 15? I am kinda use to Oreo so I am looking for an Oreo ROM. I like AOSP no doubt but I'd also like to try a ROM that is build from scratch for MZP only.

Yeah, thanks for helping me, man! The dev was really cool - replies, debugs, and compiles really quickly as well. Talk about pro.

I already asked him if it was in the works and he said don't ask for ETAs. I asked him again today and told him I wasn't asking for a date, just a confirmation if LOS 15 is in the works. We'll see what he says.
EDIT: So it counts as an ETA then. He said we'll just see it come out (so I guess it is in the works). But I wouldn't worry that much, the dev works really fast.
and yeah, I like a ROM that was made for the MZP as well. As much as I like Alberto's ROM, a ROM built from scratch > a port (though LOS 14.1 is Alberto's work as well). It's a pity he quit development of it.

[FIRMWARE][Mi 5 only] Flashable zips - updated regularly

Down at the moment
Some info about requirements
7.5.4 Nougat-based
The true legendary solid one for some Nougat ROMs (especially WhyOrean's)
8.1.4 Nougat-based
Current minimal version for Cosmic
8.2.1 Nougat-based
Current minimal version for Omni
V9.5.2.0 Nougat-based
Seems to work fine on Nougat ROMs that won't work with 7.5.4 anymore
8.5.10 Oreo-based
Current minimal version for Lineage (LOS) /-based, AEX-mod, Dirty Unicorns (DU), Pixel Experience (PE), Resurrection Remix Darkness (RRD), DotOS, AOSiP
If you get an error7 in TWRP it means the firmware you flashed is too old for the ROM you wanted to install.
Please tell me in these cases and I'll update this post!
Also always remember to be on the latest TWRP version.
At the moment this is 3.2.1-1.

This is the new and way better answer to your question ; )
Thank you Phil, great initiative!
Just a suggestion for you to consider: I know it's extra work, but I think it could be a good idea to post a hash of each uploaded file for integrity validation after downloading (SHA1 or SHA256). What do you think?

Hey there, thanks for your feedback!
And thanks for the suggestion. If you can give me good reasons to do that, I will consider it, but I don't see which protection is offered by these hash files nowadays...
They won't prevent man-in-the-middle attacks, as the hash files can be manipulated as well - as I see it, it only makes things a little harder for both sides.
But what do you think? Do you really think this can help?
All the best!

I'm not so much thinking about MITM or other malicious attacks (even though that can happen too), but merely about a minimal safeguard for checking file integrity. For important things, I always check the file hash when it's made available by the download source.
It means no additional difficulty or effort for the downloading party (only those interested, like me, would check the hash against the one posted in the OP for each file), it's only an added step to generate and post the hash for the uploader party (ie., you ).
Of course, it's not a requirement or a high priority for these files, but it would be a nice touch, given how crucial and sensitive a thing it is. Just for reference, all official LineageOS downloads have their sha256 hashes posted and available.
Thanks for your response, and again, for your efforts and time in creating and maintaining this thread!
Im on xiaomi.eu rom stable which firmware do you recommend for my Mi 5? im new here and have some basic experience.

I don't recommend to use these files on MIUI or MIUI-based ROMs.
OP is updated with that statement.

What's the difference between China-dev and Global-dev?
Hi there, thank you for maintain all of this. I recently updated form 14.1 to 15.1 using FW 8.4.19, but the battery is worse than before.
1) Is this because of the firmware or the LineageOs update?
2) And if it is the firmware what version, in your experience, has the best battery lifetime?
3) To get back to the old good battery lifetime, I am also willing to downgrade, but I cant remember which FW version I was on. But the new 9.5.2 seems to be promising or what do you think?
Thank you once more, this is a great place here

It's just the naming of the MIUI version these files are taken and modified from.
If you wanna know what's behind a new version before flashing you need to check out the changelogs on the official MIUI release site and think about what changes might be firmware related.

Thanks you! : )
A ROM (generation!) update is way more likely to have a high impact on battery life than a firmware update.
Oreo sadly just suffers from very high mobile standby drain. This counts for every single Oreo ROM I was on so far...
If you wanna get better battery, see what happens when you turn off mobile data everytime you're using wlan. Will make an enormous difference.
Edit:
Also check in developer settings if "Mobile data always on" is deactivated.
Useless battery drainer that somehow is activated by default on some ROMs for reasons beyond my reasoning.
As long as I've been using Nougat ROMs and did have a little more insight to actual Nougat based firmware differences as I was doing testing for Xceed, I swore on the good old 7.5.4.
I would appreciate a feedback of how it goes with 9.5.2, if you should decide to roll back (which I believe will drastically bring back better battery life), but I'll re-upload 7.5.4 here later as well, so you can compare.
All the best!

Miui-based
Why do you wanna use these?
Firmware updates are included in new MIUI versions. That's where I take them from
Is there any difference between the global version and China version?

Thank you phil, very interesting.
I have been looking around for a while, but I cant find any 14.1 nightlies any more. On the official LOS I can just find the 15.1 builds, the Nougat ROMs seem to be removed.
But maybe someone has still some stable version and can provide me a link? Or spot me the the correct download place?
I am defenitely keen to try the new 9.5.2 FW on Nougat. Would just be happy to get a good battery lifetime back.
Thank you
