If you have TWRP, then take a backup and after data wipe, restore data

Unfortunately unless you have twrp, stock recovery will format both userdata and data.

Hey guys, I just got a Note 3 and I am looking to sell my Galaxy S3. I hadn't used it much but regardless it's obvious I have to do a factory reset so it wipes all my data and also gives the guy I sell it to a fresh phone.
But I've heard resetting an S3 is not as straightforward as it should be. Now the phone is unlocked (does reset remove the unlock?). So there are two resets? Hard reset and soft ware reset? Which one do y'all recommend and how do you do it? Which reset mode will let the new user use it as if it's a new phone?
You can do a wipe from the OS and also a wipe from stock recovery.
The phone will remain unlocked.

Is the OS wipe where you go to settings and select backup and factory reset? Doesn't the OS wipe leave your saved stuff/collected info on the phone?

It shouldn't. In case it does, that's why I also suggested wiping it from recovery.
To really be safe, you could flash a stock ROM via Odin, depending on the OS that's currently installed.

I guess recovery is the Hard reset this guy is talking about here?:
http://www.androidpit.com/en/androi...alaxy-S3-Factory-Reset-your-Samsung-Galaxy-S3
If so are those directions:
Settings > Personal > Back Up and Reset > Factory Data Reset > Reset Device > Delete All.
Correct? I don't wanna flash anything. I bought the phone a week ago, still on stock 4.1.1 lol just a vanilla AT&T unlocked phone
Do you lose root if you do a factory reset? Sprint LG G3 Lollipop rooted with avicohh's one click root. In Settings>Backup & Reset>Factory Data Reset
No, you will not lose root access.
Factory reset deletes your data partition, cache and dalvik cache.
Your system partition will not be touched.

Are you sure about this?
While I'm not familiar with "avicohh's one click root" method I'm 100% sure that doing a factory reset wont remove your root access.
Factory reset does nothing to system partition. You will still have root.
Thanks.

Hi guys, I think I'm having a little issue with hard resetting my phone. Everytime i go into recovery and do clean install, everything that is on my internal storage stays there, like my download folders, old folders and files etc. So how can i hard reset the phone. Also I've tried going into Settings > Back up and reset > Factory data reset > Reset device > Erase everything, but when i press erase everything, nothing happens. How can I fix this? I'm on eclipse v9 rom.
I'm having some issues with apps taking long time to load, that's why i wanted to hard reset and restart afresh.

You want to clear your internal storage too?
If yes then go to recovery>wipe>advance wipe>select internal storage, data, cache to clean your device and flash your rom again.
You could also flash a stock ROM via Odin and wipe in recovery mode before booting the stock ROM for the first time.

Yeah do a back up first, "factory" reset is self explanatory.

What I meant is wiping system without wiping data, as can be done when rooted
If you wipe System, you wipe everything. Same if you try to delete windows on your PC...nothing will work anymore...like said in post above...backup is the only way
Root the mobile.
Wipe system partition and keep user partition. First take backup. Then try this. User partition has most of the data.
