Hello, so I'm going to be receiving my HTC One M9 tommorrow morning, and I was hoping the XDA community could help me with some fundemental questions regarding my new phone.
So, first off, this is a Verizon version, but I'm 95% certain that it comes factory unlocked. HTC6535LVWSG. I hear some people have issues rooting/S-OFFing the Verizon version (VZW at least, but I don't think mine is), but if it's not that version (or already unlocked, for that matter), does that mean that I will be able to load up any recovery from here? Assuming that I've gotten a recovery installed (my past phone was an EVO 3D, which I've tinkered quite a bit with), will I be able to use ROMs posted here? Or will I need to use specially made Verizon ROMs?
All of that aside, do you know where I can find the Marshmellow RUU that I heard just came out for the M9? As mentioned in the earlier paragraph, will I need a special GSM version for it?
EDIT: I found the news post at HTC, I'm assuming that it would work for any M9.
Thanks for anyone who responds!

NO! SLOW DOWN!
If you get a Verizon M9 do not flash anything!! Unless its specifically for the Verizon M9 or the developer of the ROM/Kernel states it will work with CDMA or Verizon M9's.
As of right now only the GSM Marshmallow update is out. Do not flash this RUU/update on a Verizon M9. It's better if you start off by just looking around for Verizon M9 threads. Ask questions in other threads if that particular ROM or file will work on a Verizon M9 or better yet read through most if not all the posts in those threads because more often than not someone in your shoes has already asked the same question.
But if you received a locked/S-ON device do not update/change anything on that phone until you've freshen up on whether or not S-OFF/Rooting is available for the software that comes already on it. It'll save you the headache of playing around with a new phone and it auto updates now your stuck without S-OFF.
Also don't ask questions in "General" that's what the Q&A section is for.
Congratulations! I think you'll be pleased with the M9.
Diaclaimer: I'm a hobbyist and not an expert - you should do some reading of threads and
research before attempting to hack your phone.
A few things:
- you may find better help in the Verizon HTC M9 forums (http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-one-m9)
- S-OFF is currently only possible on Verizon's variant of the M9 via a Java Clip. They're expensive, but there are fellow XDA members who own them and are willing to use theirs on your phone, usually for a reasonable fee
- until your bootloader is unlocked (pretty sure that your phone will NOT come that way - Verizon is not user-friendly) or you are S-OFF, you will not be able to flash a custom anything (recovery or ROM). Attempting to do so may render your phone unusable.
- Marshmallow has been released officially for the developer/unlocked variant of the M9, which is GSM-only. The Verizon variant is CDMA; the RUU will fail to install on your device.
Hope this is helpful. You probably have a bit more effort to go through to be able to hack your phone, but it's very doable and worth the effort. The M9 is a solid device and all the moreso once you have S-OFF (or an unlocked bootloader) and root.
Unfortunately, UPS Next Day Air has failed me, with yet another delay, so I won't have the phone today. :v
I know it's already paid off, and I'm pretty sure it's factory unlocked. What determines if it's a VWZ version or not? How does this affect my modding processes? I hear of several people who can do stuff to "non-VWZ" versions.

Not for the vzw m9. Big difference is the versions they can do already can use htc dev to bootloader unlock and root. Vzw is another can of worms because we need a root exploit before anything can happen.

So, I got the phone today. It was supposed to be delayed but I guess they managed to deliver it! I have to go, so the phone is gonna sit here for a couple hours, but it can boot into the bootloader (I'm not sure if this is a sign that it can be unlocked, but we'll see, I guess.)

Any phone can boot into the bootloader. To determine your phone's status, you'll need to look at the upper left corner when you are in bootloader mode: does it say 'unlocked' or 'locked'? Similarly, does it say 'S-ON' or 'S-OFF'?
First of all you should, in my opinion, deal with the differences of a CDSM to a GSM device in detail and read especially the Verizon specific threads in this forum very carefull.
Seconed to it you should pick up the full information about block based OTA politics, and the major changes regarding moddifications to Android 5.1.1. If never done before you should also read the basic threads abaut unlocking, rooting, fastboot as well as adb commands. If need for further help occurs it is hightly important to be able to explain when, where and assumingly why a problem/error occured.
Besides this have fun with your One M9!

Ah, I know the ins and outs of adb and fastboot already, as I've had my fair share of working with the HTC bootloader-- however I just wanted to clarify some things that I had not previously known. Thanks for the advise, though.
Guys please, anyone can verify that the buttons (power and volume) are a bit 'down after a few months of use??
Welcome everyone!

Let me be the first to ask a complete noob question.
I bought a Mi5s a couple of months ago and loved the phone. However, Miui 8 is becoming somewhat of a annoyance for me. I flsahed the global ROM by making an EDL cable, pretty straight forward. But i'm still missing the stock android experience I had with my nexus 5. Today I saw that Lineage OS is being developed for the Mi5s and when this becomes more stable I really would like to try it.
My question is, where do I get started.
I know ik need to request to unlock my bootloader (I did a couple of days ago) and that I then need to somehow install TWRP. But thats it. Is there a manual I can use or at least read to better understand how the process works and what I need to do?
Thank you very much
p.s. I read a lot of stuff about the mi5 and how to flash it but i'm wondering if the process is the same since the Lineage OS 14.1 is ported and unofficial.
Noob question here too, loving the phone, battery life is amazing after samsung s4 lol.
I read on i guess xiaomi.eu forums not to wipe system partition on twrp. I was always wiping system ( i was just leaving sd and internal and wipe anything else.) So, i shouldn't wipe system on mi5s?

Hi
First of all, I agree totally that MiUi gets a crappy feel after you get used to it and start missing the old vanilla Android. Also, yes. You need to send an unlock request for unlocking your device. Refer to an unlock thread or wait if there's no thread yet. Somebody will eventually make a thread regarding this unlocking and flashing TWRP thingy (mostly me). And unlocking ain't gonna void your warranty, so all good. I don't think that Unlocking the BL is the hard part. You've just gotta apply for permission on their site with a good reason why you wanna unlock it and all. Flashing TWRP and rooting- here comes the fishy part. You can't just flash any TWRP on any device (unless you are that stupid). So wait till a proper thread has been posted about this topic. I would suggest you to go ahead and unlock the device. And also, no question is a noob question. I just named the thread like this so it sounds better. XDA is an open community built with the sole purpose of helping techy-brains all over the world.

Thanks for your reply. I got my unlocking permissions but when I try to unlock with the unlocking tool I get an error that the mi phone isn't connected. On the Miui forum I read a couple of different ways to unlock the device. One of 'm stated you can unlock it on Globa Stable but you have to enter your Mi account details under developer options/MuInlock. And if you can't find that option you have to use a developer rom. Problem is, there is no Global developer rom that is newer than the global. Can you help me?

All that about flashing developer ROM for unlocking is plain bull****. I unlocked mine on global stable 8.0.6.0 (my redmi note 3). If you have been getting errors unlocking the device, make sure you are following these steps correctly:
1. Update your Mi adb drivers.
2. Enable developer options in your phone, enable OEM Unlocking and USB Debugging (because 60% of people forget this step).
3. If you've got permission officially, wait for a week or so, because it needs time to get our name and Mi Account ID registered on their servers as they get up to hundreds of unlock requests per day.
4. After a week has passed, connect your phone to the PC and start the unlock tool. This time it will get unlocked successfully. I guarantee you that this method will work if you follow it exactly how I told you to. I have tested it myself and trust me, it works!
Do update me on what happens with your device. Best of Luck! May the servers be with you... LOL!

So I have Mi5s , from gearbest, not changed anything on it, no rom or anything.., not sure how to do it, so I am using it the way it came... first question, what can I get if I change/update rom or anything like that ?
second. autofocus on video is really annoying and only reason to get this phone was camera and video... I see that on miui website , they still didnt get any answer for this problem, so maybe someone here can help me with that. All works ok if I use some other software and MANUAL mode, but its pain in the ass to adjust everything manual all the time.. so is there any solution to that or no ? global 8.2 stable

So I see "NOOB FRIENDLY THREAD". Sorry if my questions are too much noobish.
I just bought MI5S on aliexpress with installed international version of firmware on my phone. And I want to know how to start?
1) How to unlock everything (+root) + install TWRP + update to latest firmware + backup. Is there a guide for novices?
2) Do I need mi account? (I never user xiaomi phones before)
3) Do we have any stable unofiicial firmwares?
4) Is there a way to disable all xiaomi-related things?
Hi I have a Mi 5S plus.
Would like to root for using some programs (gmd, Autovoice, few others).
Not interested in trying new roms, and prefer a simple root, hoping that I can receive Xiaomi software updates without big problems.
Possible? Instructions??
Hi, maybe not much of a n00b question but didn't want to make a new thread for this little thing.
I own Mi5S since yesterday 3/64GB version and first issue i've noticed is that its getting hot really quick (battery sensor in settings shows 38'C) i know it has Snap 821 but still, making a phone call and feeling hot in hand. Sure, the aluminium back is transfering the heat but its not a pleasant feeling. Is that normal with this model ?

Hey experts,
I see a few questions pending, but I hope someone is gonna pick them up soon, and mine as well!
@sesser, mine does get a bit warm sometimes, but never to an uncomfortable level. Hard to say if you're more sensitive, or whether there's something wrong with your phone...
First a bit about my situation:
I bought the mi5s 3/64GB directly from the Xiaomi online store in China.
Unfortunately I dropped it within less then a month and now the 3 touch buttons are going crazy. Fingerprint scanner is still working fine though. I found a temporary fix with the apps "remap buttons" and "VirtualSoftKeys". But MIUI kills these apps all the time, so I have to re-enable them in settings/accessibility. Definitely not a long term solution!
I also managed to install the google play store. But it is unavailable quite frequently.
I'd like to install LineageOS as soon as there is a stable release. But until then, I hope to find a better solution than what I have now.
So here are my questions:
1) Does the MIUI.eu rom have any advantages over the Chinese version? For example I have quite a few system apps that are in Chinese. Would be nice to have them in English. Or getting the search bar in the notifications go to google.com... Or is there another stable rom you'd recommend instead? Or are the differences so small, that I should wait for LineageOS?
2) What reason should I tell Xiaomi for unlocking my phone? I read "My Mi5s came with a custom ROM. Please approve my unlock permissions so I can flash the official MIUI ROMs." But I don't think that works, as I bought mine straight from their website.
Thanks!

The newest lineageos version is very stable and bug free when you make a clean install with dynamic gapps
while the g6 alone is a fantastic device we at&t users want to play to. as of now i know you cannot boot into fastboot on the variant as ive tried. I also know the chances are slim considering the g5 still is locked. but nothings impossible on xda. look at the H910 V20 model for at&t. its unlocked with dirty santa exploit.
this is a donate thread for bootloader unlock, root and twrp.
im not taking a tally so if someone wants to do that then feel free. only rules are you pay what you pledge upon project completion.
this thread is for discussion and pledges. :good:
updated :
i no longer have the device. i couldn't live without root, got a op3t. but feel free to keep this open for others.
Anyone want to get this BOUNTY up and going with me?
Count me in for $20
I'll give $50
I1l also give $80.
Unlock, Root, TWRP, and don't kill anything along the way... $100.
Root? Any progress? this device deserves some love. Bounty anyone?
I'd happily pitch in $50 for an unlock. Itching to try out some oreo roms
The G5 remaining locked doesn't make it seem all that likely though
Though I'd love to be proven wrong! (please, before I give in to the 5T announcement tomorrow)
Guys I dont wanna be that guy, But look back in history now with G4 G5 and now G6 More than likely bootloader unlock will never be achieved AS any device now on noug and above check system verity root is not possible without unlocked bootloader...
The biggest thing here is my self included If you want a rooted device Research before purchases...
Dont buy devices on hope that root and bl unlock will be achieved As LGs "newer" Bootloader signing is impenetrable as of now.

I admit, I did NOT do my research. I got a good deal on it, so I picked it up. Coming from the last 2 devices having bootloader unlocked, I suppose I got used to it. UPDATE : i need more time and research
I just have been at a local store, had this phone in my hands and I have to admit, that this phone could be the perfect phone for me. I love the dimensions. My only problem: on my previous phones I always had full access to my phone (root et al), and this seems to be a real problem with sony phones in general. Unlocking the bootloader is difficult, and if you succeed, this might break your hardware (camera, as this is the case with Sony xz1 compact).
I'd need access mainly to extend the phone's lifetime, using custom roms when the device is not supported by the manufacturer any more. (I have high hopes that updates are easier since oreo.) So my question: This would be my first Sony. What do you expect in this regards?
That at least for two years, you'll have top notch official updates.
By that, fixes for it, like happened for previous xperias, are likely to pop out camera just degrade in quality btw it doesn't break completely)
As for extending functionalities, I hate to admit it, but modern android really.
Even freaking betterbatterystats can be granted all the required system permissions with.
Same for shimming applications with virtualxposed.
Well, if you are only using root and custom ROMs after support has ended, you do not have to worry about that for the next two years (maybe three considering security updates). Sony is in the Top3 Android-Manufacturers then it comes to Softwaresupport.
So, after two years you won't have any problems using an AOSP ROM. Thanks to project treble you could already use such a ROM right now. And with the ported Google Camera APP (which will be working on the new Snapdragon 845 shortly) you will not have to compromise Photoquality when switching to a Custom ROM.
To sum up: You don't have to worry for the next two years and you will be able to use this phone for a long period of time thanks to project treble and GCam.
PS: you do not break the actual hardware by unlocking the bootloader, you simply lose some sony-softwarefeatures, which can be replaced most of the times. At least that's how it's been on Sony Flagships in the past years.

Really? Please post where that rom is, and how to use project treble to install it?
Here is one of those ROMs: https://forum.xda-developers.com/pr...-development/experimental-phh-treble-t3709659
I suggest you to do a search for project treble here on xda. There are several articles and threads to learn more about it.
I do not own a treble enabled device myself, so I don't know exactly how it all works.
Unlocking the bootloader isn't hard, even a noob can do it with ease. Sony is one of few manufacturers that actually supports it natively from their website. But, as you said there are some downsides to it. The DRM-keys will be lost forever, unless you back it up (which you can only do with temp root). But if you going to use a custom rom, there's no need for them anyway.
I'm not sure what loosing the DRM-keys will do with the XZ2 Compact. But with previous models some stuff stopped working, like the image processor. The camera worked, but with a slight impact on pictures taken in low light (probably have to do with image processor).

no custom recovery for this phone yet, so not sure how you can flash a custom rom on it
Via fastboot. At least thats what it says in the instructions, when no custom recovery is available.
I told you to read more about treble and you didn't even read the instructions? I'm not gonna flash the ROM for you.
So to make things clear: I think you could flash a treble ROM like lineage OS et al. but I wouldn't recommend it to you.
Because:
-you would lose your DRM keys. There is no way to back them up yet and no DRM fix, yet.
-Gcam is not working properly an the sd845 yet.
Just wait two months and it will be whole other situation with this phone.
Are you this disappointed with the Sony firmware, that you want to flash another ROM already?
flashing a rom via fastboot is not what I would consider a safe thing to do, and, if you have a disaster doing it, then without a custom recovery there might be a problem getting back to where you were.
I'll wait to flash anything until there is actually something worth flashing, since the Sony stock firmware is pretty good right out of the box
Okay guys apparently I'm too much of the little guy to post this in the dev part. However, I did a search and came accross an eng bootloader or what claims to be for the galaxy s10+. I'm not sure as to the legitimacy of this file, but figured it was worth putting out there. I helped or tried to help when the S8 came out as well. Anyway once I get it uploaded somewhere, I will post the file.
Okay just an FYI this is said to be the eng bootloader from PakFirmware and said to be for G975U
Bootloader filehttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1c3gDQ6vi99NsRS3cZzVkR2C_vzNIPL-s/view?usp=drivesdk
Bootloader RAR filehttps://drive.google.com/file/d/1wG1d0eK6hBnL6-N1SimEIwvKiC2G8YcY/view?usp=drivesdk
If anyone is curious as to where the file came from it was from herehttps://www.google.com/amp/s/pakfirmware.com/2019/02/samsung-s10-sm-g975u-eng-boot-file/amp/
Here is the link to the combination from file with supposed eng bootloader included https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XeL8KfP255QJD0Txv5B79Edneb4SEaY-/view?usp=drivesdk
First of all, I bet you $20 right now it's not, it's just the same combination boot file that comes in every single combination rom.
Second of all, even if it is and I am wrong, it won't help as you won't be able to boot it. Samsung phones require special certificates to allow them to boot eng firmware, and those certificates essentially oem unlock the device anyway. I know this because I have an s8+ that happens to possess one. But before you ask, the certificates are tied cryptographically to the imei and did numbers of the device they are issued for, so finding one for another device won't help you
As has been stated ad nauseum, the USA Samsung devices aren't rootable anymore. People who want rooted Samsungs should purchase the exynos (SM-G975F/D), or international snapdragon (SM-G9750) models
While the above may be true, I was merely trying to help and by no means am I a developer. I, however do not believe that US variant SD Samsung phones are not rootable. There have been countless times before where people have made that statement and yet root has come to fruition, albeit may take a considerable amount of time and effort. Many US customers are unable to buy international variants and are stuck with what we can get. So with that being said, I hope that I am not being too pushy with regards to your statement, I just refuse to be pessimistic when it comes to development and root efforts. The galaxy s8 had root even though it took some time, yet it was suppose to be unrootable. I just like to think that regardless of people saying it "can't " is a motivator to challenge development and experiment.
You two should work with @elliwigy and his root project! He could use some assistance & expertise & team! Cheers

I am aware, as I was the last person to root one. Changes came with the s9 family that closed the last remaining doors. As you can see by looking the s9 or s9+ were never rooted. The s10 won't be either
Found something
Ok so i found something that might be of some use it says its an eng boot file but idk if its legit or not so if someone can check it out it would be very much appreciated heres the link: https://support.halabtech.com/index.php?a=downloads&b=folder&id=42678

It's not. In 100 out of 100 times you find these online they are just the combination bootloader repackaged with this incorrect name, because they can be used to bypass frp in some cases.
I don't know why you are looking for the eng bootloader anyway. Even in the incredibly unlikely scenario you found the real one, it won't help you because devices past the s7 won't boot them anyway without a special certificate that your phone doesn't have (because it effectively unlocks your bootloader anyway)

Man, if only we were able to find and use the ENG firmware! Even if anyone is able to find ENG firmware, they will not be able to use it as @partcyborg already pointed out.. You would need some sort of ENG Token to convert your device into an ENG device which as he also stated would in itself be like unlocking the bootloader.. If you know anyone or any company that is able to convert devices to eng devices (I highly doubt it) then please let us know.
Last I heard if you could even find anyone that is able to sell you an ENG cert/token that they are very expensive...

haha yes, that irritates the CRAP out of me... its like the entire internet doesn't know the difference between "ENG" and "FACTORY" sometimes..
to add, factory firmware will not allow you to root your device. It is only typically "debuggable" (no it isn't a userdebug and if you don't know what this means then it probably won't help you either), permissive and verity disabled.
ENG firmware typically will have "eng" in its name and 5th letter from right to left will typically be an E (for ENG.)
To top it off, most of the world can't even flash factory firmware onto g975u.... I think people should focus on figuring that out before anything.. if not, the world is doooooomed
On a side note: The S8/S8+ SamPWND root did use some ENG firmware (this was of course released after the S7).. Mainly we used the ENG system which has SU binaries by default.. but I can 100% tell you even if we did come across ENG firmware, we can no longer flash the system without ENG token/cert...

$600 USD per device for the s8/s8+. That is after the company plops down $25k up front just to set everything up.
It's likely priced this way specifically to make it virtually impossible to do things like give them out on XDA
I think elliwigy has rooted the S9. S10 will be very very hard to do if not impossible.

*cough* Just figured I'd leak some protected Samsung AT commands here for you guys to crack that 'cryptography'
AT+ENGMODES=0,
AT+ENGMODES=1,
AT+ENGMODES=2,2,
AT+ENGMODES=8,0,0
AT+ENGMODES=8,0,1
AT+ENGMODES=8,0,2
AT+ENGMODES=8,0,3
AT+DEVROOTK=
AT+DEVROOTK=1,0,0
AT+DEVROOTK=1,1,0
AT+DEVROOTK=2,0,
AT+DEVROOTK=2,1,
AT+DEVROOTK=2,2,
AT+DEVROOTK=2,3,
AT+DEVROOTK=2,4,
AT+DEVROOTK=2,5,
AT+DEVROOTK=2,6,
AT+DEVROOTK=2,7,
Both of these commands have something to do with the eng bootloader being switched.
AT+REACTIVE may also be part of it

these arent secret or helpful
Seems at this rate we would need a Samsung phone tech to get root.
