Hi, I currently have my FTV connected to my router using a wired connection. I tried to make a wireless hotspot using FTV by using the Wifi Tether Router app. It works fine. I can see the access point and I can connect my laptop and my IPhone to it and surf the internet without any issues.
The problem starts when I connect FTV to my router using the build in wireless card. At this point, if I enable the router (through the app), it disconnects my outgoing wireless connection from FTV to my outside router. The hotspot is ON and working, I can connect to it fine with my laptop, but of course, its useless as there is no outside connection.
My question is, is this possible? Using the internal wireless infrastructure in FTV to both act as a software router (through the app or any other app) and also use it for my outgoing connection to the WAN. Can it do both simultaneously? If possible, does anyone have any suggested settings for this app (Wifi Tether Router)
If no one has any experience with this app, is there other app that makes this possible, paid or free? Thanks.
You only have one radio which can either be used as a client or access point.. But not both at the same time.
This works on phones as it uses the GSM or CDMA radio for the wan and the WiFi for lan.
Ok, thanks. If it helps, I have a USB hub connected to FTV. My wireless keyboard and mouse combo is hooked to that and works. I have a Wireless USB adapter from CompUSA (the kind you plug into a desktop to get wireless capability) which I can use by attaching to the USB hub. Can that somehow be used to accomplish this? I know I can always buy a Wifi as WAN router like CradlePoint, but curious if this can be done through FTV.
Edit: In a way, the next logical question is, can an external USB wireless adapter be used with FTV for its outgoing WAN? If so, how? I have the StickMount loaded and I can browse through another storage USB through ES File Manager. Probably not related, but thats the setup I have now.

Doubt there are drivers for a USB WiFi dongle.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Free mobile app
which tethering app did you use exactly?
The Wifi Tether Router. I can't post links yet.

This is what I'd try. I'd look to see if other Android STBs can run an external wireless card and if so, try to find the cheapest one with the same wifi chipset.
The problem is going to be in telling the OS to use one adapter for uplink and one for hotspot duty. In theory it's possible, in practice - well, keep the cost of the second dongle below 30 bucks and tell us your findings.
Here's a device some Ouya folks use http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-WNCE2001-Universal-Internet-Adapter/dp/B007CO5DZ4
that link is to the refurb, new they're just north of 50. Here's a similar one that goes new for 25-35

Basically, you configure it (connected to a PC) then you connect the device to the ethernet port on your fireTV, it acts as a bridge to the wifi network over the ethernet, so potentially you could then use the wifi onboard as your access point.
Probably you could, actually - you've described doing just that already but using a whole cable run, right?
IMHO if your gonna drop $ might as well by an access point.. They can be had for cheap and you won't be tying up your firetv handling network traffic.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will give it a shot in the near future.
I am sorry, I missed the last line, don't understand what you are saying there... Thanks.

Just that in your initial post, you describe running ethernet to your fire and also getting the wifi to work as a hotspot.
Since you'll still be delivering network to the fire ethernet port, this setup will look to the fire as if you've run ethernet to it all the way from your router, and it ought to work just the same.

Not doubting this on FTV, but the matricom mx2 boxes can be used as a wireless hotspot as long as you have it on ethernet.
Once you have an unlocked bootloader, you might have acess to traditional android settings like the mx2 with a custom rom. Just an idea...

That is correct. Works beautifully with ethernet WAN. Works so well that it seems to have a higher broadcast power than my oldish Netgear router. They both sit side by side in my bedroom. As soon as I walk to my garage, my IPhone loses the router, but with FTV it stays connected, with 2 semi circle bars. Also, it chugs along even when FTV goes into sleep mode.

Instead of a dedicated device you could purchase a chameleon type of device like this.

I would love to make my Fire TV an access point. I have a 1st gen and it is also connected via an ethernet cable. Can you tell this newbie how to do it? You mentioned Wifi Tether Router.
Whenever I come home, my phone won't reconnect to the wifi, and it goes and kills the connection to all devices at home wired or not. I have no problem with connecting and reconnecting with work wifi.
It is a BelkinAC1200
any help?

There was an issue with Google devices ping flooding the P2 and thereby knocking the router offline, but this was reportedly fixed around Feb. or Mar. of this year. If you have any Google devices, especially Chromecast or the Google speakers disable them completely and then re-test. Is your phone up to date (9.0)? You could also check the router firmware to make sure it is running the latest version available.
everything is up to date and on 9.. and there is an GalaxyS4 on the network along with my mac and 2 iphones..
never had this issue on my LG G6 until i switched to the P2XL..
i've ordered a asus router.. hopefully fixes it

Wouldn't be a bad idea to install DD-WRT on your router. It has a ton more features and is much more secure than stock firmware.
no can do
picked up a Asus RT-AC53
mediatek
hope this works out
haha
Hey. Is there anyone around with latest stock on Z1 compact who can check the hotspot function for me?
I just want to know if 5GHz hotspot works on stock or if it's only 2.4 GHz mode.
Thanks

Ok, I'm already tested my second device with D5503_14.6.A.1.236_R2D_CE3_1280-7868 version and no option for choice 2,4/5GHz
If I'm connect the only one Z1c SSID avaiable (no secondary 5GHz) and after connect the detail show the network 2,4GHz
Other fact. The magnetic connector charger mystification. (measure: kcx-017)
the stock lolipop only charge with 0,5A - no speedcharge.
The AICP14 latest as same only charge with 0,5A
But. You Line16 charge with 0,8A :good:
:fingers-crossed:
Hi,
Does anyone know if you can share mobile data via usb c ethernet? I have a router that has 2 wan ports and would like to set up the note 10 + 5g as a failover connection. I have the tmobile version. I plug it into my router and the activity lights light up, but no data is being received. THe option to turn on usb tethering is grayed out. Any assistance is appreciated.
Thank you

I have a trendnet TEW-829DRU. I know it's overkill for a home network.

I dont believe it's overkill whatsoever. I had an asus router not too long ago. When I attatched it to the router and I turned on USB tether, it automatically detected that it was a modem. I was able to share my internet connection thru the router and broadcast the signal. As I understand it this is what your end goal is?
Yeah. Unfortunately the USB cannot be used to share a mobile connection. When I have the ethernet dongle plugged into the phone, usb tether stays greyed out. When I connect it to the WAN 2 port, the ethernet option stays greyed out. But I connect it to an open port the ethernet option becomes active and I can receive a data connection to surf on the phone.
As much as i know it's not possible to share internet via USB. If I'm wrong please let me know.
This will be possible soon: https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/...rives-in-latest-android-11-developer-preview/ although not sure if it will come to the Note 10+ and if so when.
Doesn't Settings>Connections>Mobile Hotspot and Tethering>USB tethering do the job?

Yeah but when you have a USB ethernet dongle USB tethering is greyed out.
What I did was to get one of these: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01N5RCZQH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and use it in client mode. Works perfectly.
