What is the countinously blinking IR led in the front for? By looking at the notification LED area through anothers phone camera, which is a bit sensitive in the IR, one can see the blinking IR led. Is it for focusing with the front camera? I did not activate facial recognition yet. Actually it is blinking all the time, even when the front camera is not in use.

Ok. But the proximity sensor is always on. Always. Even when the display is inactive. I reseted the system to factory settings and at some point in the process the sensor turns on and it stays on non-stop if the phone is on. Is this normal?

It's always on to check if the phone is in a pocket or not. That's completely normal. When it's in a pocket it disables aod to preserve battery. It doesn't consume battery at all and it doesn't do any harm.
Edit: also disables touchscreen when you're talking on the phone while next to your face.

Ok so I bought a sprint tp2 with a messed up screen (looked like an oil blot in the center). So i replaced the screen/digitalizer from one off of ebay.
Everything works fine and i would recommend doing this for anyone who has a broken screen instead of fixing the digitalizer themselves(less headache involved).
The problem is that I've noticed that led on the left works fine. ember when charging, green when charged, and flashes green when there's a notification. But the led on the right does absolutely nothing. It just doesn't light up.
At first I thought it was the proximity sensor but that seems to be closer to the led on the left.
I wanted to know if the led on the right is suppose to do something? Like on my old kaiser if wifi was on it would indicate that along with gps and bluetooth.
The LED on the right IS the proximity sensor.... Won't EVER light up, and if it did then something screwies gong on...
OK I was just wondering. Thanks man.
the proximity sensor is to the left of the right led

this is correct...
OK now I'm a little confused...sorry. So if you were to be looking at the phone the led on the right is the proximity sensor?
I thought that the proximity sensor is located to the left of the left led indicator and assumed that the right led is actually the ambient light sensor. Correct?
I just wanna make sure everything is working right.
thats what i mean, its nowhere near the right led..

Hi!
I have a problem with ambient light sensor in my SE xperia arc. Users manual says it has this sensor, but there is no option in menu where I can activate it. Also programs like z-device test or androsensor says there is no such sensor is it broken or sth?
My Arc is from Polish Orange, unlocked by code, latest software.
Thx for help
If you hold your finger over the sensor (cover the part on the left side of the speaker) you will see that the phone changes the backlight.
Mine shure does.

TIL: The flickering is only happening under fluorescent light sources.
yeah, my light sensors doesnt work either, anddrosensor says my phone does not support it =(
It's activated by default
Proximity sensor red faint light always on now , randomly turned on not sure why....
I have no motion things enabled
I tried turning off proximity sensor for phone
Ive rebooted several times
Ive turned off auto brightness
Im running the stock s3 rom rooted.
Anyone have any ideas how i can fix this?
Hmm.. My quick research of this makes me think you have a rogue app, a sticky setting or a defective sensor.
Let's be sure we're looking at the right thing. Your faint red light is just to the left of the front camera lens, correct? If so, then it's a definite indication that you're proximity sensor is on and constantly taking a reading.
Is it always on, from power on to power off? Or does it turn on once the phone has booted up? Does it stay on long after the screen shuts off during idle?
This sensor is used by motion features and talking functions. Triple check that you don't have 'smart stay' turned on, or one of the other super cool gs3 features enabled. I'd consider turning them all on manually, rebooting and then turning them all off followed by another reboot.
Lastly, take a look at your apps. Any kind of app that involves motion or talking (Voxer, Skype, certain games etc) can activate the proximity sensor and keep it on. A lot of those apps start on boot and never go away. Close them one at a time, or consider uninstalling suspect apps temporarily.
As a hardware test you can install Elixer2 from the play store (for free). Its sensors section allows you to turn the proximity sensor on and off, as well as test the near and far readings. If all else has failed, it might be nice to know that at the very least, your sensor can be turned off.
Report back with results from everything and we'll go from there.

Well i was using Viber, when i turned it off manually, the red sensor light went off. So it must be ab application that is keeping that sensor on all the time. Smart stay does not need proximity sensor and enabling or disabling it causes no change to sensors. Hope this will help ya

Thank you so much for the awesome response. I didn't find any other similar responses on the Internet other then " oh that's just the ir sensor don't worry about it". I too have viber and I believe that was the app causing the issue because of the way it integrates itself with the phone, can't be certain because so many apps updated as of late but it is gone now thankfully.
I get this when I`m in a dark room. The sensor will turn on. The only way to correct it is to restart the phone.
Plausible Solution
I don't know if this works 100% of the time, but it HAS worked for me. Go to your Viber application, menu, and then EXIT the app. Viber seems to be the culprit, so if you find exiting the app manually every time bothersome, you might be better off uninstalling the thing. Click the Thanks button if it helps =p

Disable Proximity Sensor
I´m trying to disable my proximity sensor in GS3. I tried with Hardware Disabler and doesn´t work, and the Elixir2 can´t disable the sensors.
Does anyone know another app to disable the proximity sensor?

The notification led is connected to the ambient light sensor so in a dark room the led is dim, in a light room the led is bright.
However if you're out and about in even a slightly bright day and take your phone out of your pocket (which is dark) you can barely see the led because it's been in your dark pocket.
This isn't a hardware limitation, if you install Resurrection Remix or Liniage OS the led is bright all the time.
I'm running a stock based custom os because of the camera quality.
I just wondered if anybody has worked out a way to either disconnect the led from the ambient light sensor or even disable the light sensor all together... I don't use it.
I've tried the Xposed Sensor disabled but it didn't work on either BRF5 or ARC5

Turn off Automatic screen brightness? Is the LED not connected to the screens brightness level?
Ummm, actually when I said I don't use the light sensor, I figured it was obvious that I don't use automatic screen brightness (since it uses the ambient light sensor).
Anyway, no.. The led isn't connected to the screen, it's connected to the same sensor as the screen... The ambient light sensor.
You can tell the screen to ignore the ambient light sensor by turning off automatic screen brightness, that however doesn't turn off the sensor.. So the notification led is still controlled by the light sensor.
Have you tried any of the notification apps on Play or Samsung Appstore? There's quite a few free ones available on Play but I've never had the need to try any on this phone.
I've tried them all, I like lightflow the best.
They let you control the brightness up to 100%, but that's 100% of the brightness controlled by the ambient light sensor which in turn answers to the Samsung software.
*Sigh*, if I can't find an answer, I might take my balls in my hand and open one of the phones and physically disconnect the sensor.. It's only a cable with a plug.
I also have an S8+ and it does the same thing.

LOL, if you do let us know how it comes out.....the sensor not the balls.
Has anyone solved the troublesome problem?
Hi guys
Since one day , my screen turns dark when having phone call or receiving phone call.
I can't type the keyboard and press the speaker button, which are inconvenient.
I have updated fw to fw_capricorn_miui_MI5S_V9.6.1.0.NAGCNFD_857fde8b41_7.0.zip
I have this issue on different roms including lineage 14 , lineage15, RR,and pixel experience .
Do anyone also have the issue and do anyone know how to solve it.?
My phone drop to ground once which cause screen crack. I am not sure whether this is the root cause.
Many thanks
The phone has on the front a proximity sensor, which is basically a small light sensor that checks if the phone is near the head or not. If it's near the head, it turns the screen of, so that you don't press any buttons while holding the phone to your ear.
I think either your sensor is broken or the crack always brings light to the sensor.

Could I disable this function?
Always disable light sensor or disable when have phone call
I had the same problem I thought the sensor was broken (you can test it with sensors test https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=asd.vector.sensor ). But it was ok, it turns out it was firmware related. When I downgraded my firmware the proximity sensor was working again...
Good Luck
