I just installed substratum/Andromeda, first time using substratum without root how's the experience so far

I'm playing around with it (rooted) and so far almost nothing works.

[Q]Rooting and keeping up to date with the official ROMs

Hello guys
I've tried to gather some information on how to do this but I always get lost on the best and proper way to do it.
So, basically I'm currently on 20F as upgraded through the official LG Desktop tool.
What I wanted was to get Root while still using the 20F. From what I've gathered so far I have to downgrade to 10E, root using purple drake and then update.
So far I'm able to go as far as downgrading, rooting, installing TWRP. My problem is: after trying and flashing 20E, 20F or 20H I have issues with some games (not sure if the same would happen with non-gaming apps) where basically the game simply closes after a couple of seconds open, no error what so ever. The games in question I've tried are Tap Titans and Crossy Road.
Is someone facing any similar issues? Or could someone give me a hint on anything I might be doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Have you reinstalled the games?
As in reinstalled - not restored from backups.

Broken Screen Cast:eek:riginally Rooted Sunshine, Viper Rom, data wiped, safety net fail

Broken Screen Castriginally Rooted Sunshine, Viper Rom, data wiped, safety net fail
Hello, hopefully someone can help me. I have a HTC 10 unlocked US version that I rooted a bit ago with Sunshine and had Chainfire SuperSU installed. A big reason I ended up with the HTC was the root support as my Samsung S6 proved unrootable and thus I was not happy with it since I couldn't use Titanium Backup or use AppRadio Unchained with Miracast due to needing root to allow the touchscreen touches on the Pioneer radio to communicate with the phone. Before I was using an S4 with an MHL cable but the microUSB port gave out on me.
I was still using the stock ROM after root as I was happy with it. On occasion I need to use Barnacle or WiFi Tether router but had problems getting them to work very well. I ended up deciding to switch to Viper Rom which was actually what I had on the S4. I picked Magisk root so I could use Android Pay in the future if I wanted. I did a full backup in TWRP before this. After installing I tried to use Screen Cast to my Screen Beam Mini 2 and it failed, I then tried with the Smart TV and that failed as well. Both of these worked on the stock rooted ROM.
I restored the backup from TWRP but when it booted, it asked me for an encryption password which was my lock screen password. Problem was I've never had either on this phone and tried the 2 pins that I use for most things to no avail. I gave up since I had Titanium Backups and did a Wipe all data in TWRP. This got Android back up and going again, so I reinstalled Viper Rom and it still fails the SafetyNet check in there. Hide is turned on and I chose every google app during install and have not installed anything else at all.
Does anyone have any idea what may be the issue? Venom Tweaks and Venom Hub are on there and it still will not connect to any wireless display. So after wiping my phone which was working great except for the screen casting, I'm not any farther ahead. The firmware is still 6.0 if that matters. If the Viper Rom won't work with Screen Cast, will any of the custom Roms or do I need to go back to stock rooted? It was quite the disappointment when I did the restore and couldn't access the phone without wiping first, defeats the purpose of a backup which I've never had an issue with before.
I found some guides but they were all about if you had SuperSU on there before which with the full wipe I assume does not apply.
Ironically maybe, my new job is customer support for software and the machines it runs and that is more then frustrating as there is not many help documentation and there are all kinds of things that can go wrong and the error messages are not very good at all. For the guys with years of experience it's probably not as bad, but the job requires travel too, so they aren't always around. It's bad enough when my own stuff has problems I struggle to figure out but when someone else is trying to do their job and you are their lost resort to fix things, it's pretty stressful. So I apologize if this was something found by an easy search, I really do try before I ever post anything but just like work, there are so many variables and I don't know which ones matter in this case.
Anyway, thanks to anyone in advance that may be able to help, I"m out of ideas aside from flashing stock firmware and rooting from scratch again, which was months ago and I don't remember the process. Things were a lot easier back in KitKat it seems.....

Hi,
I'm not quite sure what you're wanting help with. Get screen casting working, or getting back to stock?
Hello, I'd just like to get screencast working on Viper or another custom ROM if possible, if it's not possible I should be able to figure out how to go back to stock and root again. Screencast was working on the stock ROM with root. Being able to restore my backup would be nice but I think when I installed Viper I did not check the force decryption as it said you had to format the data in TWRP and I tried it without a wipe, which did work. I still don't get how it set a password when I was never prompted for one and never had a lockscreen password of any sort. I didn't unfortunately do a backup of Viper.

I did a data format from TWRP which uninstalled Magisk I suppose and the Manager app says System not Rooted yet still fails the safetynet check, that makes no sense to me.

I cast my screen with Viper10 and Chromecast. It might be the casting app you are using.
Thanks, at this point I guess I'm going to flash the stock RUU and then figure out how to get twrp and Viper with the Magisk back on there since I've already wiped the data and my backup is encrypted. Is it okay to use Sunshine or do I need to use another method?
I was trying to use the HTC connect, maybe that is the issue. I need to cast with Miracast not chromecast, is there an app that will work for that? My Screen Beam Mini 2 actually got broken in a traffic jam, laptop bag fell off the seat when I had to slam the brakes and caught and ripped the power jack out of it I tried a chromecast instead so I could possibly use that just to watch a video or something without the cell screen on, but using the phone for the hotspot does not let it connect to the chromecast I found, so I went back and exchanged for another Miracast dongle.
Thanks again for the help btw, since I lost my data I just need to figure out how to get to Viper rom with Magisk after flashing the stock RUU and then if I need an app besides HTC connect to use Miracast, what that app would be.

For returning to full stock, go on HTC's site and get the latest ruu for Unlocked. Run it from your pc, while being mindful of the instructions and warnings that come with the file. After that, if you want a custom rom, flash the latest twrp and whichever rom you want.
You don't need Sunshine for anything you mentioned - Sunshine is to get s-off on your phone while is not needed here.

Thanks for the help. I did end up doing the ruu ( which on windows 10 took some work,) then flashed twrp again and installed magisk 13. Safety net passed and screen cast worked. Then I installed viper Rom. Safety net failed but it had overwrote with magisk 12. I flashed magisk 13 again and then safety net passed so looks like that was the issue even if not the only one. Looks like titanium backup has put everything back on too.
So only thing left to figure out is how to do a backup that doesn't encrypt the data with an unknown password but it appears everything is working including the battery charge limiter app.
Thanks again

VK810 Root and ROM Successful

I felt compelled to register here and post my success on getting LineageOS installed on my Verizon VK810 4G Altev LG G Pad tablet. It would not have been possible without this forum and the users who contribute, both with information and with uploads. I initially tried rooting with KingRoot and the OTA updated OS I had from Verizon but the app said there were 63 requests for rooting my device. Forget that idea. After also trying iRoot which wasn't working, I used the LG Flash Tool to downgrade to VK81035A and then was successfully able to root that. SuperSu definitely helped with the process. My guess is, even though both were Android 5.0.2, mine had OTA patches that I guess caused issues for rooting. Installing TWRP was a hassle though. None of the v500 TWRP images worked for me and many of the custom TWRP versions that I found on here did not work for me. You would not imagine the number of times I thought I bricked my device because I kept getting "Secure Booting Error! Cause: boot certification verify" errors. However, what did work for me was, using Platform-tools and VK810_twrp_2.7.0.1.zip for TWRP. For some reason, the other versions posted here did not work for me. It did take me a while to figure out how to get into TWRP because I kept using the Power-VolUp key combinations and it kept bringing me to what looked like LG's recovery menu. I didn't realize that the screen is actually fake and you have to click "Factory Reset/Wipe" on there to get into TWRP. It actually took me a long time to figure that out. With TWRP installed, I searched for ROMs that I could use that were newer than Android 5.0.2 and ended up downloading LineageOS as it came up for the VK810 and since VS500 ROMs weren't allowed to be installed. Now to be fair, the LineageOS Rom that I used (lineage-14.1-20171228_233442-UNOFFICIAL-vk810.zip) is pretty glitchy. The display likes to blink a lot, many apps crash on it and there is no cellular data working for me, but I assume that will possibly be fixed in the future and at least now, I can customize more than I could on stock. On first install, I also lost my root and forgot to install the GApps package from the Lineage website. Anyway, hope this helps at least one person here. Nothing was one-click for me, but I did learn a lot about the process of rooting and flashing, and now better than to automatically allow OTA updates. I do hope LineageOS or another ROM keeps updating for the VK810 because this tablet does not seem that popular and I would like to see Oreo. Thank you everyone for your help!

Can you link where you got the ROM? Is anyone actively working on it? Really too bad the vk810 never got much love, great little device. Been awhile since I've done anything with it, it's my dad's so I got it rooted on 5.0.2 and just kinda left it alone. What prompted me to come back to this forum is screen mirroring won't work. The tablet sees TV and vice versa, it tries to connect but never completes the connection, just kicks back to satellite TV after a couple of seconds of black screen. Don't suppose you tried casting on that lineage build?

I got the ROM from the Invisiblek ROMS site under /roms/lineage-14.1/vk810/ (Can't post the link as I'm currently under 10 posts)
It's definitely a start. There is screen glitching, and no LTE service (Wi-Fi only), so it definitely limits the tablet. I have not done much with it as it was a hassle just to get the root within the OS to work correctly. Some apps aren't detecting root when the OS is trying to give it to them.

It'll have to wait until/if LTE is ever functional then, my parents don't have internet other 4g out in the sticks lol. Google took me right to it, thanks. Will keep it bookmarked just in case
I'd like to write about my experience too as it took me some time to finally get the device up and running.
I will describe what I wanted to do, what mistakes I've made and what should've been the correct way.
The device itself is LG G Pad 8.3, Verizon LTE variant aka vk810
Initally I received it in a bricked state, on launching it showed the "Secure booting error" message and that's it.
1) Unbricking
The goal was to install an official LG system image and restore the tablet to a working state.
Basically, I did everything according to the steps outlined here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/general/vk810-4g-reliable-to-root-install-t3283027
Installed LG drivers
Downloaded the LG Flash Tool 2104
Downloaded a KDZ image
Plugged the device in the download mode into the PC and installed the KDZ using the flash tool
At that point I got a fancy idea to install a non-stock Android on this tablet.
2) Lineage OS
I chose this OS for my tablet, because it seems to be the current standard for non-stock Android installations.
I followed these installation instructions: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/v500/install
BEWARE: that page is for v500, so it won't work for vk810.
Lineage doesn't support vk810 officially. A mistake I've made was assuming that I can just roll along with a v500 installation. Actually, you kinda can, but for me it resulted in Wi-Fi not working and my device's MAC address being 02:00:00:00:00:00.
3) Rooting
I was quite confused here too: there are different rooting methods, and some of them can be applied in different ways.
Ultimately I found Stump to be the most comfortable for me: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg...root-stump-root-lg-g3-sprint-verizon-t2850906
It works fine on this device and uses a very straightforward process: download APK to your PC, connect the tablet to the PC, "adb install <filename>.apk", then launch the app and that's it. It had to go through the bruteforce process to root, which took several minutes.
4) TWRP
I don't remember what exact TWRP I installed initially, but it was a 3.x version, and I encountered an issue where it couldn't mount any of the tablet's partitions. That was quite a pain in the ass.
For a while I resorted to using an older version, 2.7.x, and it worked fine.
Ultimately what I'm the most happy with is this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g-pad-83/general/vk810-twrp-3-1-1-0-unofficial-t3691551
The lesson learned here is that, again, you need to make sure stuff you install is compatible with your device.
Ultimately, after making mistakes at each step of the process, I figured out everything, and just followed the installation instructions on the Lineage page I linked earlier.
* Flash stock rom
* Root using Stump
* Enable USB debugging on the tablet, install Stump via adb and root the device
* Install vk810 variant of TWRP 3.2.1-0 via adb
* Reboot to recovery (turn off the tablet -> hold Volume Down + Power -> you should get a factory reset menu after the LG logo -> select factory reset, then confirm it and you'll be booted into TWRP. That factory reset is fake after you have TWRP installed)
* Wipe everything
* adb push the lineage / lineage's su / opengapps onto the device
* Install lineage, then su and opengapps and you're good to go
Main lesson learned: it is CRUCIAL to make sure stuff you install is compatible with your particular device. Do not assume that you can use another version, even if it is made for a device of the same family.
Just to provide an update here, this is where the ROM that I used came from: https://updater.invisiblek.org/vk810
The latest version at this time seems to be this: lineage-17.1-20200329-UNOFFICIAL-vk810.zip

Thanks for all the great information, but I have the VK810 that has usb connection problems. It will connect, but it keeps dropping (it cannot be trusted with usb cord). I have wanted to root, twrp, magisk and other things just to play around to see what it can do or how far I can go with it. I am not afraid to trash it. Have you or anyone else had this problem? I have reset it, wiped it out, factory settings, but nothing seems to help that usb port. I was thinking that reflashing the rom might help. Any advice is appreciated.

Stock rom issues, BL unlocked no more OTA updates [Help/Advice?]

Hi guys,
I am using the stock rom now since the day I got it and unlocked the BL and installed Magisk for root and SafetyNet. Phone worked fine all the time (lazy me never changed the rom) until recent.
Most applications like Instagram, Snapchat (and all that garbage) and others randomly crash recently.. Application stopped working or process.media whatever stopped. Did try to do the usual stuff removing cache, but now this also does not work anymore. Also it's time to update because the WiFi driver has this RCE flaw(CVE-2017-13292) in it and well, lots of other bugs in the rom. The most irritating bugs that all my android devices had. The flashlight stops working because of the camera initialization or something, need to reboot the phone in order to use the flashlight again (when I was with a hot soldering iron in my car waiting for the device to reboot to solder some ****ing wires under the dashboard pissed me off really good. Though long time ago, but you get the idea... )
I did try to update my device using OTA (I knew it wasn't going to work, because mine is rooted). I did try it and the update failed(lol), luckily the phone still booted :cyclops:
What should I do now, can I just flash a stock rom using twrp or is there another stable rom that is clean like the lenovo roms without all the garbish? Which ones are advised?
The version of the rom I am using as of now is in my signature. I do not really need Magisk anymore for now, I had it installed mostly for NFC emulator but the company I emulated the card for no longer exists so meh.. No need for emulating anymore Pachting ads away with luckypatcher is also not worth it and there's like no proper way of blocking ads so I'll rather live with it instead of messing around and putting effort in it.

Android Pie ROMs are pretty stable and usable now (everything works but be aware that all custom ROMs will have darker video recording in comparison to stock)
ROMs of choice:
On Oreo: RR(Unofficial final builds by fullbustah),CrDroid,Arrow or Xtended
On Pie: CrDroid(has an extended desktop bug), SuperiorOs,ArrowOs,AospExtented
I also recommend installing a modded Gcam version because that will significantly boost your camera quality without any throwback or setback.
To install a pie ROM, I have written a tutorial somewhere in our guides section. You will find it pretty quickly.
Also Magisk 18.1 (latest for now) and Adaway still blocks ads perfectly. (Systemless hosts enabled in Magisk settings needed)
I recommend joining Lenovo P2 telegram group for latest news, support and download links.

Alright thanks for the information. I will try to flash my phone next week. I do have one more question. Is there a hardware selftest or test menu in the stock recovery or bootloader because I have a bad feeling that my board might be about to fail. I think this because all kinds of funky things did happen the last few days (I hope the mainboard is still fine, fingers crossed).. I know my old Lenovo had this menu and this way I found out it was dead. Well it was obviously dead but for sure after the test failed because Android didn't boot anymore, and was not able to flash another rom and get that one to boot up.

I'm not sure if the p2 owns a menu like that.
You might wanna boot to bootloader and navigate through the small menu via volumekeys.
But otherwise...no idea.
Good luck!

Secure apps not working with Magisk on Pie

I'm having issues with certain "secure" apps not working on Pie with Magisk after updating from Oreo (Google Pay in stores, Zelle, Chase, etc.) even though safetynet and everything else checks out perfectly. I'm thinking about doing a clean install but I'm not sure what's causing the issue and I'd like to avoid it again if at all possible... I followed a guide on XDA and everything works right except for this issues and the only things different from when I was on Oreo are:
* Installed TWRP instead of just fastbooting into it for flashing
* Installed Sultan's kernel, per the guide (not 100% sure how to get back to stock on that either, unless it'll happen when flashing the update from Google)
I think everything else was the same, other than updating Magisk from 16.1 to 18.0 (and later downgrading to 17.2 after reading that 18 had some issues with hiding). Anyone have a similar issue and found a solution or have advice on troubleshooting? I'm planning on trying a fresh install and only fastbooting into TWRP to install Magisk instead of installing it, and staying on the stock kernel to see if that helps but trying to avoid bricking my phone too.
Thanks
Join the crowd... It's been a few weeks since this started. There are a few work around methods but they don't seem to be consistent or permanent. Most are just waiting until magisk gets updated to fix whatever Google did to detect modified systems.
