New Nexus Owner Question - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

Hello,
I won a Nexus 7 at auction and didn't realise how old it was, it has a cracked screen so changing the screen. Hardware I can do and have done for many years however having a look at things like roms is leaving me a bit confused. As far as I know it has the stock android that came with it.
What would I need to install to bring it up to the latest version? When I say latest I mean what is the newest version of whatever rom( I think they are called) that will give me an up to date working tablet rather than one using android from many moons ago.

You would need to install TWRP to flash custom roms and i think u should take a look at the Unlegacy rom

[Q] I am a really Overwhelmed Ex-iPhone user (ROOTING AT&T SIII)!

I recently traded my iPhone 4S about 2.5 weeks ago. I am in love with the Samsung Galaxy SIII. I love the sleek style and touchwiz is much more active and more "fun" than iOS. I love the google integration and all the cool features out of the box.
Since I'm new to android I'm really overwhelmed in the amount of information available to "modify or root."
I was a constant jailbreaker and had over 50-100 tweaks/jailbroken apps. I would like to get the same functionality on the SIII.
I wasn't afraid of jailbreaking and it was a one-button press jailbreak.
With android there are so many different versions and terminology to jailbreak and so many instructions and updates and in general just a lot of stuff.
About my new phone:
- Samsung Galaxy SIII
- AT&T
- 8GB miroSD card
- Model: SAMSUNG-SGH-1747
- Android Version: 4.0.4
- Baseband Version: 1747UCLH9

- How can I backup my device? I'd like to keep all the apps (and app data), contacts, everything if possible.
- I read as much as possible but I'm still not sure which guide to follow and which steps I need to take as some are dated and not recent. I'm scared I'll mess up my phone what are the chances of messing up my IMEI, bricking, bad stuff happening.
- Anything else I should know?
- What are some popular ROMS I can install on my phone that are supported (preferrably with JB)?
- Can I always go back to my original settings and apps like a restore but with a backup?
- Once I root what BLOATWARE can I UNINSTALL on my AT&T SIII? How do I do this as well?

hey there welcome to XDA and more importantly to the world of android.
first off rooting can be relatively simple depending on the method you use. ive rooted mine twice using odin. i just followed the video here ON Galaxys3root . com all the things you need are in the description.
rooting your phone using this process will not wipe any data, contacts, pics, etc.
once you complete the root process and get rom manager installed it will allow you to make a back up of the current system with all your data like texts phone call logs etc.
the most popular roms are aokp based and cyanogen based roms. ( just look at threads with [ROM] before it ) roms are personal preference. if you flash a cyanogen based rom you will not have the features of touchwiz. stock based roms are always good too right not im just running stock i747uclh9 rooted.
going back to your original rom is simple all you do is boot to recovery (rom manager) and do a restore. before restoring you should wipe data, cache partition and dalvik cache. (dalvik is under the advanced menu.
removing bloatware just use no bloat free this will let you remove and also create a back up of all apps incase you have an issue.
for right now i personally just use ics based roms if you want to stick to stock since there has not been an att jb leak. however if you want jb i recommend cyanogen nighties basic jelly bean roms never had an issue personally.

Hello, welcome to the android side of the world! Glad you decided to switch over! first things first, in order to root all you need to do is flash a root able kernel via Odin. Tutorial for this method can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 Second, I would not recommend that rom as I just came from it and while it is very stable for a leak it is still quite buggy as it is built from a sprint leak. If you are that anxious to have a jellybean I recommend using aokp by task650 in the original development forum, however this will take away all of the touchwiz things that you said you liked so much. I am currently running kyanrom which I have used before and find myself returning to quite frequently because it is originally bone dry and he has whatever files you would like to add back you can add them through flashing zips. I am assuming you are wanting jellybean primarily for the Google now feature? If you will go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1823194 it is a thread by me on how to replace s voice with Google now and as far as I can tell it seems to be working just as well as with jellybean!

This is a little advice that has helped me and some friends of mine that have came from iPhone. Don't root and rom unless you absolutely have to or willing to pay the price to learn the ends and outs of it. Stock Android or in our case touchwized android can provide a complete satisfactory experience alone without rooting. But some tweaks and mods require root and if that can be bundled in a single rom then great. But if you have jail broken before or ever have to restore an iPhone firmware then rooting will be relatively easy, it's just learning how to self troubleshoot when something goes wrong.

The method is mrRobinson's thread (the one mentioned in a previous post) requires downgrading to an older stock version (LG1) so you would need to upgrade again after doing that. Also, people have reported problems downgrading from LH9 to LG1 without doing a factory reset.
Edit: The method in the post I referenced is roughly the same as the one from the galaxysroot site the OP mentioned.

Make sure when you root your device, that the files are for your current build, android version, carrier and etc. If one thing is out of place you can possibly brick your phone. I'm still learning myself. The most important thing is make sure that you read everything 3 times. Make a check list. It helps.

The best jellybean rom I think is ParanoidAndroid. It's CyanogenMod 10 based. CM10 is short hand.

Hey guys when i switched to CWM recovvery and selected backup to external sdcard it said 'android.secure' couldn't be found skip backup of applications.
So it did not backup my app data, what should I do?

Titanium Backup. Make friends with it. In my opinion a must have for any Android device. For backing up everything you'd need when trying out roms to freezing/deleting (be careful with the latter) 'bloatware' (carrier nonsense) it will be a necessity. And life saver.

I couldn't agree with this more. TB is an amazing piece of software and a real lifesaver. Also, since we have external sd cards, make sure to change the settings in TB so your backups are saved on it (if you save it to your internal storage your backup might get wiped during a session of flashing another ROM). If you purchase TB Pro, it includes an option to save your backup to Dropbox (it's well-worth the money and supports the developer too).
OP, I was a longtime iPhone user (I've still got the 4S in a drawer) and I always jailbroke too. Android can be confusing at first, because the terminology is different and just because it's a different operating system. But if you read (and read and read as someone suggested earlier), you'll get the hang of it. Once you do, you'll realize how much easier it is to root and play than it ever was with jailbreaking an iPhone. Another plus...you aren't in constant fear of losing your jailbreak (or root, in this case) because of an update. :good:

Did you understand what you were really doing when you were jailbreaking your iPhone?
What was going on in the background, how the jailbreak was working, what was involved in the jailbreak process or even what the different types of jailbreaks were e.g. userland vs. bootloader (hardware level) exploits [are you familiar with the term "exploit"].
If you think what I am talking about is confusing and if you weren't aware of these things, you might want to avoid rooting and/or flashing custom ROMs.
Android as a platform is much more open than iOS, so lots of features and functions don't require rooting or flashing custom ROMs.
Before I purchased my GS3, I was a die hard iPhone owner, year after year since the first iPhone (with the exception of the recently released 6th gen iPhone and a few diviations here and there to blackberry and old Android phones).
Before I even considered messing with my Galaxy, I read, read some more, and then a little bit more. Regardless of all the reading I did, I had a moderate level of understanding of what I was doing and how my actions were affecting my phone.
All the advice in the world won't save you from bricking your phone if you don't have a general understanding of what these tools are doing to your phone.
In the iOS jailbreak community, the developers behind the tools leverage Apple's fall-back restore features to nearly eliminate the possibility of bricking your phone. But that is also inherent to the platform since there aren't custom ROMs available to install to an iPhone (for many reasons).
To summarize,
It sounds like you need to learn a little more about the world you've been playing in previously before you start playing in the Android world.

Hey man thanks for the advice!
I figured it out eventually. I just had to read and actually try Rooting. I now know most of the terminology of android. It's pretty straightforward. Of course there are some errors. But seriously Android is absolutely unbelievable (especially 4.1.1 and JB) have features I could only dream of getting supported on the iPhone.
If I do get errors there is usually a fix or something I can look up on how to avoid it. If a day comes when I do brick I should be alright if I do brick AT&T should be able to replace it for me. I've been a loyal customer to them and my family included.

I highly recommend this guide to rooting. I used it just a few days ago and it worked perfectly.
I tried AOKP and CM10 but have actually settled on this stock ROM for now. I like being able to maintain the 'motion' features which aren't standard on the others. Google Wallet works well too which is a big plus for me. There should be an update in the next 24 hours to "Milestone 5".

CyanogenMod versions for Wildfire S

Hi,
I am really full of compliments about the good work of some guys that have done a good job in building the actual CyanogenMod versions for Wildfire S.

But what I currently do not completly understand...
Why are most of the CM users really happy about version 10.2 or version 11.0 (like orig. CyanogenMod or WFSY) when those versions - last version of CM 9.2.2 included - do not even have GooglePlay/PlayStore and Data2SD (or Link2SD) installed?...
The last (and obviously most advanced CM version) CM9 (alpha9, v.9.2.2) would already be a wonderful solution for the WFS phone (I tested it!!) and it is said to be nearly finished (even video camera is working now at the version of Olivier) BUT both mentioned, absolutly necessary components are missing (and nobody mentioned it yet). Or what can I do with a phone where I cannot install new apps at all?..
So what is it that I misunderstand?...
I would be very happy if anybody could inform me about how I can find a version that has a complete set of system apps or how/where I can find both missing components to complete them by myself. (and even more happy if the cyanogenmod update function would still find some updates)
Otherwise I would guess that not any of the existing CM-based versions for Wildfire S can be used at all...
Should all the past work for creating a CM version (Android 4.x !!) for the (unfortunately!) one and only COMPACT smartphone on the world, 'Wildfire S' (I must admit, it is in fact!!) should have been completly in vain ???... I couldn't believe it.

many thanks for your tip. You did not mention the point directly but I could answer most of my questions by mayself then.
Now I installed CM9 'cm-9-20140720-Olivier-marvel' together with 'CronMod-INT2EXT+_signed'. Works pretty fine!
Only little questions have been left now...
1.) How can I sort my app icons by subjects/folders (s. HTC Sense)? This Trebuchet launcher does not seem to support anything like that. If there is no chance, which launcher would you suggest instead?
2.) There is no really 'useful' version of CM10 or CM11 for WFS yet, is there? I couldn't find. Do you think there will be s.o. still working for a final version next time?... (why is Wildfire but not Wildfire S an official CM development?)
2b.) At your current version CM9, is there any problem left that should still be fixed? Everything works fine here yet...
3.) Therefore the OTA updater for CM would be a fine feature like in CM9 vers. 9.1.0 (but no updates found yet!). But your current CM9 version does not support it any more. Any reason for that?
3a.) Are updates possible anyway without flashing the whole ROM?
3b.) Is there anybody managing OTA any update of CM (v. 9..11) for WFS?
3c.) Are OTA updates from cm9 to cm11 possible?
4.) Skype does not react when clicking the icon to start it. Any idea what is the problem?...
5.) Some system programs (e.g. contacts or call manager) do not have that nice design than before. There is no chance/choice to exchange them?... (if yes, how and where to find alternatives?)

First of all this really does not belong in the development section, in Q&A perhaps.
And you just can't ask every single think that comes up in your mind, you gotta search a little bit and try it out for yourself.
Now, 1. Trebuchet does support folders but not auto-arranging. Most of the popular launchers support this.
2. The current CM10 and CM11 are perfectly functional and working. Though they lag a bit (which is fair considering our old device). And the wildfire only had an official CM7 which is very old now.
2b. If you don't have a problem it does not contain a problem.
3. OTA is working for CM11. But for CM9 a OTA makes less sense considering that its stable now.
4. No idea.
5. Again you have to look for yourself, nobody can babysit you all the time.

to 1.) Did not expect that it would support it. So I did not even search for!... Thanks, this drag/drop solution is more than perfect!!
to 2.) Sorry, then I am not able to find them. I searched a lot and found actual version like 'WFSY11.0-WFS-V5.5, 20140723' or 'cm-11-20140726-NIGHTLY-marvel' where not even back button or Android option menu worked. Lots of functions are missing. I did not try 'cm-11-20140810-NIGHTLY-marvel' but do not expect more within one month. The same with cm version 10.2. In a thread I read that it was give up because cm11 is already working better.
**** So would you please give me the link to the finished versions of cm10 and cm11, please? ****
(a patch for the video camera problem seems to be existing shortly now...)
to 2b.) My first problem I saw was missing updater in cm9 for version 10 and 11. And the strange Skype problem. And video problem was fixed JUST before!! BT seems to have restrictions as well. So there is good reason to ask this question!?..
to 3.) It seems as if simple updating from Android 4.0 to 4.2 (cm10) and 4.4 (cm11) isn't possible!?... Officially it seems to work. E.g. OTA of Samsung offered update from 4.2.2 to 4.4. Strange!... How/why does it work here?...
Remark: So I suppose it is CyanogenMod which does not support it... It will not work without 'Titanium Backup' here...
to 4.) I suppose you will have the same problem!? Maybe you have opportunity to try out quickly!?... Skype really does not seem to run on WFS cm9+INT2EXT+. Isn't that strange?... (I reinstalled it already. No chance.)
to 5.) I asked this HERE because it belongs to SYSTEM apps (contacts or call manager) that cannot easily be exchanged, as far as I know!... Can they?...
There is one thing I would like to add, after your remarks to my point 2... Maybe I could not find the right sources. But this is because there is no resource pool (about WFS at XDA anywhere. Instead there just appear 'lonely' links in some threads. And instead of telling/explaining the systematics (if there is one) you guys generally just mention the fact (e.g. a link). So this makes it hard for non-insiders. You understand what I mean?...
(so e.g. I will have to ask (in another thread) how I can find the 'FM radio' app (no streaming!) which is missing in CM9 - instead of just looking at the right page where they are collected)
I would be really happy to get to know at least where you guys have found the informations for all what you do when 'cooking' new versions, etc.!...

Again only things that are directly related to development are to be placed in development section. And NO if you have a problem with a rom you have to ask it in Q&A. Read the development forum rules in the stickies attached to the top of the section.
And you could also try reading through the stickies in the general section. It will give you some understanding.
Now CM10 and CM11 works, the threads are pretty high in the development section, you can find them if you look. The version of CM11 you used is the right one (the NIGHTLY) and back button does work. Try the later versions. Officially updating to a higher version is different and large corporations can spend time and money to make it work. But it just is not possible (or rather safe) with the variety of unofficial roms. You could try but most probably fail. You can install different apps for call and messaging and they will work. Search for those apps. CM9/10 works fine and have very less amount of problems. Now remember that this is a very old device and the devs are doing it NOT as a profession. So every single thing will never work.
Now as a last your largest problem is you think everything will be written somewhere in front of your eyes. It will not be. You have to use Google before asking a question. And also you just have to calm down and fix your attitude.

I know, I sound as if I would not know which hard work you guys do. But I do, aWF Suser. And I mentioned that already in the beginning.
And I have heard already from your collegues that it would be a good idea if things could be organised some better. The official cm versions e.g have a central resource pool. Or the android-Wiki and CM-Wiki notes are all out-dated (from 2012) !!... Etc.
But PLEASE understand this more as a suggestion than a criticism - from a user that in your eyes only expects and criticises but cannot give. This is not the case!

I know it is an old smartphone I have. And I would have bought a new one already a long time ago. But even Samsung Galaxy Mini is too big in size and some important functions you will only find in the big version. Why is that so? Nobody can explain!... (i would pay the same price for a small phone!!! Handy devices must not be worse and more expensive than big ones!!)
The WFS is just the only really COMPACT smartphone all over. And I am sad that the industry detected a trend to bigger displays. The opposite is the trueth. Nearly all my friends e.g. like to have a compact phone but those always a beginner versions/hardware which cannot be understood at all.
Really sad. It is a big strange hole in products on market, isn't it?...
Unfortunately you did not give me tips how I could find a way to get more familiar with what and how you guys are doing. Is it a secret? I could imagine to do some work here as well. I am very interested in how you are doing your development work!...

Olivier's last CM9 version still has bugs, not only the problem with lgCamera and Skype but also at the akku loading status.
It seems as if it is not correctly refreshing. The loading curve (s. settings) slows down a lot and shows e.g. after 4 hours loading still 43%. But after rebooting it changed to the right value finally: 100%.
So again my question before, as Olivier unfortunately put away the OTA update function (but ment that it is not necessary anymore):
How can this version be fixed?
As far as I know you don't offer patches but only complete ROMs...

Okay first sorry for being rude as posting in the development section was not your fault.
Now the main problem with our device is not that its old but that it has a armv6 cpu which is not supported by later android versions. So development for developers is tougher and bugs will remain. I mentioned the general stickies before there you can find some useful guides.
And have you installed GAPPS in CM9 because some apps depend on it and won't work without it.
And just to be clear, I'm not really a developer but just a user like you.

So if I misunderstood you... what is your reason then?...
In fact it would bring us forward if you could please comment my questions and/or give tips to solve the mentioned problem.

I do not have problems with bugs. I have more problems when they cannot be fixed easily (missing OTA updater) or errors are not heard or cared for so that bugfixes will not be available at all...
By the way the phone Wildfire (without 'S') is supported by Standard CyanogenMod and also has an ArmV6 processor!...

The Wildfire is listed officially only for CM7 (gingerbread) . After that it has not been supported. I am not asking you to read the rules, in the stickies in general section there is a thread that lists some guides to some useful things. And is OTA that necessary because in most cases a dirty flash is enough to upgrade from one version to another as long as its the same android version. Upgrades between different android version would not be possible even with OTA (as lots of things change, it will probably end in a bootloop). I am not using CM9 currently so can't speak for that.

So then which CM version are you using on your WFS? And why?
I flashed cm11 shortly but it still has too many problems. E.g. the camera app crashes after successfully recording a video, the launcher only has two pages, launcher does not seem to support folders, etc.
Do you know where I can find the actual todo list? (AndroidWiki unfortunately is not maintained anymore!)
I will give Paranoid 4.45 a try yet. Maybe this is better!?...
Otherwise I will keep cm9 and hope that we can find out why Skype is not running.

Confirming lack of ability to upgrade past 4.2.2 on Tab 3 Lite (SM-T110/SM-T111)

Just rooted my device for the first time today using TWRP and flashing SuperSU. I was hoping it was going to give me the ability to upgrade my device to a stock android version of Lollipop. As I'm looking around it seems like that is not supported by the community. I have used the search bar and haven't come up with much, except a few old threads when Lollipop was just released.
I found this thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2755532 that suggests nobody has modded it past it's final android update 4.2.2. The only difference it seems is it gets rid of some of the uninstallable Samsung and Google apps.
I just wanted to confirm that there is no development going on past 4.2.2 for the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite (SM-T110) before I flash a new ROM from the list.

Do you want to use anything that requires root? Then yes. You don't? Then no.
I personally do use apps that require root, plus I enjoy having full control over my phones, so I immediately root, unlock the bootloader, and install a custom recovery. But that's not for everyone.

Just use it for a week and see if there's any functionality you miss. Or to put it a different way: when in doubt, no.

well i use xmod b4 but now i cant even if i root my phone cos its x86 i have htc desire x b4 rooted.
but this fone i see a lot of threads "UNOFFICIAL" on rooting, unlocking bootloader, rom and etc... so im 50/50 i dont
want to brick this phone even if its cheap..

its your choice but i personally would...and the unofficial methods work perfectly fine..im getting the 4GB RAM variant today and as soon as i get it im rooting, unlocking bootloader ,installing my Xposed Modules and stuff.

Depends on why you'd want to root. I like tinkering and using Adaway, so it was a no brainer for me.

YES. The bloatware is ridiculous. I'm probably going to write a tutorial on how to do everything start to finish if you're buying a new 551. Not that bad if you have all the files. Really easy, but good grief, are all the tutorials out there now confusing. Most don't even tell you, you need to downgrade... Took me hours to figure it out. Finally, have a debloated rom, root, and busybox installed so I can install Kali Linux

Same, I am going to wait until Android M as well. I found that when you root phones b4 they get their "improved" stock firmware, the modem/wifi/bluetooth never seem to flash the same and are always buggy. I am being careful with this phone because it works quite good minus the terrible battery life, but on my OnePlus One, I found a 40% increase in battery life even on the early early Android M roms. Seeing that there is no roms even being worked on for 6.0, I am going to play it safe...after all, some of the bloat can be removed without root. Of course not the annoying ones though

Yep that literally posted about the same time I made the comment lol. But having official firmware for Android M built by ASUS themselves, then having it customized by Asus would be better. I do not mean to insult CM, but I have yet to see a truly stable version of their software. Every phone I have had has shown to have issues with CM based roms. It's not the guys customizing the roms, its just the fact that CM is more universal and not necessarily developed for this specific phone by the original coders. Modded code always has issues, and if it comes out perfect, I hope these big companies pay whoever mods it to perfection and gives them a phat paying job. I want ZenUI, its one of the best non AOSP UI out there IMOP. I only want root to clean out the extras I don't want/need. It has more customization than a phone needs for the most part.

Whats up Guys its been while since I last posted and used my Nexus.
I Iam now using it for Uber eats all day.
I have seen there is several roms running 8.1 Oreo. I wanted to know what would everyone say is the best one that would feel and perform as fast as my Galaxy 8 running 8.0 Oreo.
I am Currently not rooted yet on the Nexus 7 so I know you will tell me to get Team win recovery and root first.
Also its been years since I have rooted lol with team win.
I just want the Tablet to feel extremely fast and be able to customize it as much as the rom lets me. I wanted your opinon on how much faster and snapier it will be after 8.1 Oreo. I really could not tell how fast my S8 was running until I started using the Nexus 7 again for comparison lol.
One thing I want to add as well is there way to make a complete backup of my entire device before unlocking the bootloader as in this video I found he says you have copy all filed on your computer.
Is there not a way to backup or complete a Mirror back up before unlocking and installing the boot loader again sorry guys I have not done a root in years so forgot the entire process from what I remember there was always a way to create a entire mirror backup before rooting or installing the boot loader.
Is there any other way to do this is faster way or more efficient proof since this video was filmed in 2013. So any way to root without factory resetting?

Can't guarantee best/fastest but I have been having good luck with the UNOFFICIAL lineage builds at that link. They aren't necessarily 100% bug free but work very well for my usage (mostly browser, a few apps).
I used wugs unlock way back when and assume it would still work. I don't believe he still keeps it up so you may want to verify or check with other options.

A few key things to pay attention to:
- Find the updated twrp(s)
- Read about repartitioning so that system is large enough for the ever-expanding gapps
- most use magisk for root now rather than su

I also have my asus prime running kitkat and it is just slow laggy and buggy as hell it not running like a smooth tablet at all. On the prime I have it rooted with team win 3.0.0
I just want both to be running as fast as my galaxy S8 or as close to it as possible. It seems crazy that Prime feels so slow in comparison when it has quad core processor.
