There's a pretty good deal on the phone, so I started thinking about it as an option. My main problem is the locked bootloader, so there would be no option to update it after Huawei decides to pull the plug. How many years of support can we expect for the device?
You can expect two major Android releases, and some security updates after that.
So is it confirmed this phone is bootloader locked for all regions? Really wanted this phone as an alternative to the s10, since I cant go without an unlocked bootloader

There is an option in the developer options to allow the oem to be unlocked. So who knows, anything can happen.
hi, so I was trying to unlock the bootloader before attempting to use an AOSP pie rom using this guide on the official LG site http://developer.lge.com/resource/mobile/RetrieveBootloader.dev
Anyway when I come to step 9, I type "adb reboot bootloader" and the phone reboots in fastboot mode. Then when I type "fastboot oem device-id" the phone freezes and I have to press the power button to restart it, meanwhile in the powershell command page it says
Code:
C:\Users\chahi\AppData\Local\Android\Sdk\platform-tools>fastboot oem device-id
FAILED (Write to device failed (No such file or directory))
fastboot: error: Command failed
I checked my drivers and everything seems to work perfectly fine. I am at my fifth attempt and I'm beginning to feel pretty desperate. If anyone encountered the same problem or could help me solve this I will be very thankful !
Thanks in advance.
NB : I'm on windows 10 and my phone is running the korean pie rom.

I cannot 100% say what the cause is with certainty (I have the Sprint version and I absolutely hate this piece of trash) but others have reported similar issues from actually having a different variant that was cross-flashed to the EM model and sold as EM when it's really a Sprint version (for example). What happens when you enter your IMEI number in LG site, does it return the EM variant or something else? That's where I would start (unless you have already done this and confirmed it's EM). Non EM versions lack the full ADB support so we can't unlock the bootloader. This is the same point I lockup as well but mine was not intended to be unlocked.

Thank you for the quick response !
Yes I actually typed my IMEI in the LG site and it gave me a gray OK so I guess I truly have the EM version ? (knowing that only the EM is supported idk) Are there other methods to make sure I have the EM version for sure ? Also worth noting that I bought the phone new from North Africa so it must be the european version and not a carrier one.
Thank you !

Not that I'm aware of but if the LGdev site let you get the unlock code then I will assume it's real as they do validate it. Normally I would suggest to reach out to LG but that's a waste, they won't help. In fact they shutdown the dev recently because of unlock requests so they don't care about us so that won't help you. I'll do some research and see if there's any official way to help but hopefully others will chime in with the answers.

Good luck with LG, they most likely will do nothing to assist you. That's my biggest gripe with LG, they suck with customer care nor give 2 craps about us, the customers. My LGG7 sucks so bad, it's barely usable but they will not do anything to help me nor Sprint so I'm leaving both once my horrible lease is up. All I can say is to sign the bootloader petition and leave LG, it's the only way they will ever change and even then, they probably won't. They will soon be out of business just like Blackberry's downfall and for the same reasons. They don't listen to the customers and change, nor did RIM with activesync, now RIM is a mere fraction of what they used to be, LG mobile is next. I hear so many complaints about LG devices, not just LG mobile but the entire company. All the same type of complaints across all LG products, no customer support when the device stops working and they pass the buck every time, and locked bootloaders (for LG mobile).
There is no unofficial unlock yet, that's why I'm so unhappy with the piece of junk! If I could unlock and install my own flavor of AOSP then it would be an entirely different story and I would fix my own issues and have an awesome device. Instead the jackalope in charge of LG decided to keep the bootloaders locked with no support to unlock (except for EM) but even that barely works (your issue).
I don't know what else to say except LG SUCKS, LG is terrible. I so wish I hadn't let the Sprint rep bully me into this horrific device. I should have stood my ground and not accepted the deal which came with this expensive paperweight (LGG7).

SIM unlocked, yes, bootloader unlocked, no (on Sprint and everything other than the European model, no, EM model, yes), the rest of us, no, huge difference. I would pay a small fortune if bootloader unlocks were possible and why I bought the LG octoplus, still no option yet unfortunately.

Are you 100% sure this is not SIM unlocked using a modified octoplus (I have already gone down this path) so I bought my own octoplus. I am pretty sure all these "unlock" are merely SIM unlocks and not bootloader unlocks. I've investigated this pretty deep and it was only SIM unlocks not bootloader. As far as I'm aware, there is no hacks or mods to unlock the bootloaders for any LG G7 as of yet. eBay results are all SIM (which is simply using oct to apply the US-unkocked m ok model unlocking the SIM).
If you can find a REAL bootloader unlock method that works and unlocks my bootloader, I will PayPal you 20-30 bucks (I'm not joking). There is no method yet that anyone I know, knows of.

It's not sim unlock
It works by installing g710em bootloader and then flashing an unlock.bin .It's actual bootloader unlock. You can probably even do it yourself on a octopus box but I'm not sure what does it allow and not allow you to do.

Hey Piatch, i'm stuck on your same situation!
I have a new LMG710EM taken a month ago in a store, today with the Pie release (I'm in Italy) I found some time to unlock the bootloader, root, debrand (my G7 is TIM branded) and update to Pie.
I'm not new with LG, I come from G2, G5, G6 and now G7, never a problem (apart from the slowness in the updates I like them).
Well, just your situation, only the wording is a bit different, to me it says FAILED (Write to device failed (Too many links)) then the phone reboots and freezes in G7 logo and I have to press the power button to restart it, like yours.
I've tried everything, even reading online, different USB cables, different fastboot versions, but nothing worked.
Then I unbranded via lgup refurbish option to have a clean install and reinstalled all, thinking that maybe the new OS would solve but nothing, same message.
Can anyone help us?
It is the first time in several years that I have not found a solution.
Thank you in advance

Hi f0ster, I did not find any solution because I was lacking the time and tbh the skill to do it. I think we can't unlock the bootloader while under Pie ? Maybe if we roll back to Oreo, then we can unlock it and then update to Pie again ? I don't have the skills nor the confidence to safely flash Oreo on the G7 (I had bad experiences with bootlooping on the G3 and G4). Maybe you could try this way and see if it works out for you ?
Hi everyone !
Hope I'm not making any double post but I couldn't find any explanation for this very specific situation.
After thorough research it, it seems that most of samsung devices has a secret setting called "OEM unlock" that we have to use to do the first step of rooting the device. In some cases that setting is missing but can be displayed again by some "date settings" tricks or waiting 7 days. In some other cases which seems to be mine, the "OEM unlock" setting is simply removed by probably the carrier of the phone and can't be reinstated.
In that last case which seems to be mine, I can't find any precise information wether we can or we simply can't unlock bootloader by other way and therefore root the phone.
Could anyone enlighten me ?
Thank you very much in advance !

I assume you know that the OEM unlock toggle is in the developer settings? To enable developers settings, tap build number repeatedly until it says you are now a developer. You will need no fancy trick to show it as the lock that hides OEM unlock, only came out in oreo. I don't think carriers disable OEM unlock on Samsung's but I could be wrong. Lastly, if you get it figured out, go over here to the right thread and get it rooted. Good luck! https://forum.xda-developers.com/sa.../how-to-root-twpr-flash-a300fu-a300y-t3494362

Thank you for the answer.
You assume right. I enabled developers settings first, saw that I didn't have OEM unlock option visible, then started to look about this issue. It is quick to see that in many case, even for phone not on OREO (I'm with Marshmallow 6.0.1), this OEM unlock is missing. But based on internet available data, it seems that in most of the case there is a trick to make it visible again. It is a sort of samsung security against thief that hide this option for seven days.
The trick didn't work for me and by looking more I saw that some people seems to be facing the same situation as mine. Some suggest that it is disabled by carrier.
But I couldn't find a solution anywhere for that context.
My question remains.
Here is a more detailed explanation :
from https://www.howtogeek.com/239798/how-to-unlock-your-android-phones-bootloader-the-official-way/
""There are two kinds of phones in this world: Those that let you unlock your bootloader, and those that don’t.
Whether you’re allowed to unlock your bootloader depends on the manufacturer of your phone, the model you have, and even your carrier. Nexus phones are all unlockable by nature, and many phones from Motorola and HTC allow you to unlock your bootloader through a similar process as the Nexus.
Other phones, however–and some carriers–don’t allow you to unlock your bootloader the official way, which means you have to wait for developers to exploit a security vulnerability if you want to root and flash ROMs. If you have one of those phones, this guide will sadly not help you.
The best way to find out which category your phone falls into is to browse its section at XDA Developers. If you have an HTC or Motorola phone, you may be able too research its unlockability on HTC or Motorola’s website. If it doesn’t support unlocking, you’ll have to use an unofficial unlocking or rooting method, which you’ll usually find on the XDA Developers forums.""

The Galaxy A3 2015 (SM-A300FU) has no OEM unlock as A3 from 2015 don't even have FRP Lock, neither it has RMM state. That means there is no lock which prevents you to flash any custom binaries like TWRP recovery with Odin. You'll only lose access to knox apps/services (because of knox 0x1), rest remains the same.

Hi !
About my device, here are details :
Samsung A300FU
Android 6.0.1
BASEBAND VERSION : A300FUXXU1CPH3
Build number : MMB29M.A300FUXXS1CQD5
Carrier was French company called Bouygues.
About bootloader lock or not, I can see on various website that many samsung are bootloader locked but can be unlocked easily by this OEM unlock option. Sometimes it is missing. Two reasons for that : Security check that is removed after 7 days or apparently permanently removed by carrier or geographic area control.
If i'm in that last case, is there any other solution to unlock the boatloader ?Or the phone is just unrootable. It seems strange to me that some phone are just unrootable.
Thanks again !

Hi !
Thank you very much both of you for your help. Indeed there was no OEM unlock.
Many posts talking about OEM unlock existing on that A3 and the fact that I couldn't check if it was locked or not using the two methods advised (with adb or with a special code to dial up on the phone interface) led me to stop at that step to be sure before going on.
It is advises not to root a divise with a bootloader locked to avoid bricking it.
Anyway, trusting your input I did the whole process of rooting and putting a custom rom and it's all great !
I've had my eye on this phone for a bit now, and if all is good, I'm going to get one next weekend.
Some disturbing news though, it appears that unlocking the bootloader will completely kill the cameras. And the only way to get them functional again, is to lock the bootloader again.
SO, I guess this means that recovery, root, or anything else that requires modifiying the system in any way, will kill the use of the cameras?
Is it possible to unlock, root and do whatever, then relock the bootloader and get cameras back while still having root?
The 90% people on this community first what learn ro do is to unlock bootloader. You think that they all dont need camera or..
How is that even possible?
Once when you unblock bootloader you can do what you want, flash custom rom, custom recovery, custom Kernel. Magisk. Magisk modules..
But when you lock it ,and something got wrong ,you get hard brick phone. Bootloader must ne unlock until you use root and etc..
Camera have nothing to do with unlocking and working perfectly. I dont know who say to you ...or make a joke
Btw what phone you want to unlock?
Sometimes it is better to keep quite, specially when you are not aware about current affairs.
@ OP yes, still same.

Well, dang. That kind of kills the idea of fully functional phone with root. I mostly use root for ad blocking anymore. I don't really do the custom ROM thing all that much. Custom Android development these days isn't what it used to be.
I'm looking at either the carrier unlocked version, or the Verizon version (as I have Verizon as my carrier)
I believe rooting for ad blocking means you are paying more (now a days). In my opinion, Private DNS could be a good choice for ad block on unrooted.
I use AdAway. Works perfectly. But for best use, requires root. But yeah, other than that, I don't really use root. Would be nice to have a functional TWRP, but that may or may not happen. But that camera kill is a problem. I guess if I can get DNS to work, I won't have to worry about the bootloader at all. There would be no point.
I use AdGuard on my non-rooted phone and I don't see ads. None.
I see no reason why you need to root to just block ads. There are some great ad blocking apps out there. I love AdGuard because it works not only on my phone, but my PC as well.
There is a reason you cannot get this on the PlayStore. Google kicked it off because it works so well.
NextDNS

Camera have nothing to do with unlocking and working perfectly. I dont know who say to you ...or make a joke

Actually that is where you are wrong. Another user on this forum unlocked their bootloader on fold3 and then their cameras where disabled. There is even a warning message on unlocking bootloader screen that states clearly that cameras will be disabled after unlocking the bootloader. Even Sony smartphones had this but then Sony removed it so cameras won't be disabled after bootloader unlock.
You can read more about it here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/unlocking-bootloader-will-disable-the-camera.4321957/
So if bootloader locked/unlocked doesn't much matter (at least at this point), since I have Verizon, is there any reason to spring for the Unlocked version over the Verizon version? Does the Verizon version have any more apps preinstalled on it that the Unlocked version doesn't? Does either perform any differently?
Unlocked carrier is not the same as unlocked bootloader.

What he said.
Carrier Unlock is the same as SIM Unlock which lets you use other carrier SIM Cards, has NOTHING to do with the Bootloader.
The Bootloader just unlocks the ability to flash custom Recoveries and ROM's. This does NOT SIM Unlock your phone.
Guys, I'm well aware of the difference between the two. I've been at this for 14+ years. I'm just wondering if there is a performance difference, or bloatware content difference between the Carrier Unlocked version and the Verizon Locked version.

Today, the hardware in the US variant "Unlocked" and "Verizon" versions are exactly the same. The difference is only in the software set. And you have choices there. With Odin 3B you can cross-flash between the models to get the software set you want. Hell, you can even put the TMO software on the VZW "locked" device (I use quotes there because it is only locked for 90 days, at which point it becomes fully SIM unlocked automatically). You can load the U1-XAA, the U1-VZW, the U-VZW, whatever you can get your hands on. I am currently using a Verizon device with U1-XAA software, happily on One UI 4.0 beta. The Note 10 was the last device to have different hardware profiles between carriers that prevented full cross-flash support, and that was just because of the differing 5G networks as 5G was still in its infancy.
Notice how my phone setting in the photo show my phone as being a U1 (because it reads the phones software), and my phone info page within Samsung Members shows it to be a VZW device (because it uses the serial number to look up info from its database).
If you have any specific questions about it, feel free to message me. I have been doing this stuff since the WinMo days before Android existed. I don't post a lot because very few people read AND understand.
Oh, and for clarification to all the trolls out there, my device is still bootloader locked, Knox is fully intact, and my device is still covered under warranty (This was tested with my Note20 when i had to have the NFC chip replaced, and it too was a U-VZW running U1-XAA software.).

The 90% people on this community first what learn ro do is to unlock bootloader. You think that they all dont need camera or..
How is that even possible?

Hoping for some progress on camera issue and all we get is this dips### lol
I didnt know that unlocking bootloader can kill camera. I unlocking phones , Samsung mostly. After then Xiaomi comes with lower prices and I now unlocking Xiaomi.
Can understand why vendors doing it..
But ... Some Hacker will always find some way
I have a U1 phone on Verizon. Everything works. 5g, wifi calling etc. Not sure if Verizon video calling works but who uses that? Duo is in the dialer I think. I've used opera browser for years which has ad blocking as well. YT vanced also and fblc

It's with this batch of Sammy phones. Doesn't always kill the camera.
BUT they have tried and haven't found a work around. Maybe 12 will let us, but for now we cannot unlock withou the camera "breaking".
Please see my thread - i believe with a12 this is thankfully now moot!!!!
Hi all, I just recently purchased a Google pixel 6 pro new for cheap coming from a Galaxy S9. I was wondering if there are any downsides to unlocking the bootloader? Like losing some kind of functionality or DRM or Widevine certification, etc. forever? Switching from a brand that has everything locked down I'm used to losing functionality lol

As far as I know, only rooting will have disadvantages, <ie> Banking and Google Pay. My Bank won't allow rooted phones to use its app.
Disadvantages to unlocking the bootloader (unlocking the bootloader can be done without rooting after):
It may be possible that some rare banking or other sensitive apps will notice that your bootloader is unlocked and refuse to fully function.
If you're not very careful, you could accidentally either temporarily or permanently brick your device by flashing the wrong thing.
Truthfully, most of the time, having the bootloader unlocked (or at least OEM unlocking enabled) gives you MORE recovery options if something bad happens (such as you flash Android 20 Beta 1 and it bricks your phone).
Having the bootloader unlocked is by its nature less secure, so if your device gets stolen, there may be a greater possibility a hacker can break into your phone and/or get valuable data out of your account or cause greater havoc. I've never had a phone stolen, although I did find someone's stolen Sprint HTC 4G (if I remember the model correctly) one time, which I arranged to return to the owner by calling Sprint. I assume the person who stole the phone gave up on being able to easily use the stolen phone, since Sprint erased and locked down the phone remotely.
Disadvantages to being rooted:
Have to manually update anytime you want the new month's update.
Have to jump through a few hoops to make sure almost all banking/sensitive apps don't realize that you're rooted. The method may change from time to time due to changes in Android, so there's always the possibility any time you flash an update to Android on your device that you'll have to wait for and flash an update to root-hiding methods.
Advantages of being rooted: Well, you know, there are tons.
Good luck!

Thank you! i've been in the game for a while so I know the pros/cons of rooting and unlocking. I just didnt know if there were any device specific downsides on the pixel 6 pro, but it seems its just the usual stuff. Coming from a locked down brand, this is very liberating!

Cool, you're welcome. Yep, I fooled with a Sony phone once. Was extremely disappointing that it gimped the camera on purpose if you unlocked the bootloader using their official means to do so. And for a while with the bootloader unlocked but not rooted, I still received OTA updates just fine, but then suddenly they stopped allowing OTAs to download and install actually over the air - had to use XperiFirm to download and then flash them manually.
It's getting harder to pass various integrity checks for Play, banking apps, and GPay. And now device integrity. You have to consciously maintain all of these.
