Update: I've since found out that it's only on 3g that it isn't working. On Wi-fi it does work. This made googling for the answer much easier and others have had the same problem - the fix is to delete any proxy settings listed in your APN settings (system settings>Mobile Networks>APNs - delete the proxy settings and then menu>save).
When I was on stock I used adfree android (rooted) to change the hostfile and prevent any ads. It worked great.
On android 4.2.2 (using CM 10.1) it just doesn't work though - it acts like it has but I still see ads. I'm rooted and have given it superuser permissions. Adblock plus, adfree android and adaway don't work either. Any ideas?
Would love to get rid of those ads again!

Updated the OP - fixed by deleting the proxy settings (turns out it was only not working on 3g but wi-fi did - googling this meant I found others with the same problem)
It's a matter of getting the ad website lists and adding them to hosts file right? Is there something more to it?
Sometimes content would refuse to load if I get rid of the ads. Annoying, so I have to stand the ads. Is there something I can switch off easily? Like ABP?
I've tried Adfree and turning off didn't work well IIRC. Probably should give it another shot.

Yeah the adblock plus app can be switched on and off, and adway can restore the old hosts file pretty quickly
Hey guys, I've installed and applied Adaway on my ATT, rooted M8 but i still get ads in chrome. I've tried Adblock Plus which doesn't work either and actually blocks out my internet connection instead of ads, I've tried moaAB which doesn't help, and I've tried Adfree which has a similar effect of Adblock Plus which blocks my internet instead of ads. I have S-off so does anyone have any idea what to do?
Use a different browser? And put this on the pile of reasons not to use Chrome. ?
Are the ads gone from other apps? Adaway working fine for me. Don't know about chrome specifically tho, as you can guess I don't use it. ?
Which kernel do you use?
the original kernel is write protected, so the changes to the hosts file will be undone.

Ads don't appear on Dolphin browser, or at least not that I know of. Idk if it's just my M8 that won't let ad away block ads on chrome or something else but my N5 shows no ads on chrome.
Also, I'm on elementalx kernel

All add blocking extensions will block ads from most known sources but not the newly arrived hybrid ones.
Its like antivirus definition database that has to be updated continuously as the new on arrives.
I'm using Adblock Browser. Nothing can be stopped but we can minimize.

well then just download and use adblock and adaway modules.
that way you can minimise adv. not completely stop them.
also note chrome can give you these pesky popup sites claiming your device is infected and start vibrating your phone .
if you use adblock browser you can save yourself from these intrusive websites

I Will Live With Those Annoying Ads, But I'm Now Using Firefox As My Daily Driver With ublock Extension, It Blocks All Ads, But Still Using Chrome Custom Tabs For Opening External Links Fastly...
In the absence of root and Adaway, I searched and found a lot of references to DNS66. I tried it but it doesn't work. I don't need it for browsing as I use Opera, but I would like it for apps.
I have found that a few apps that I've used on my old Tab S now don't work on the S4 and wondered if anyone has found an ad blocker that works without root?

uBlock Origin for various browsers. Not sure about other apps though.
Doesn't the Samsung browser allow to add content blockers in the "extensions" in the settings? My s9 does and that's where you add the various ad blockers..adblock fast, adblock plus, disconnect, adguard several others..
Edit.. just realized you're asking about Opera.

Actually I'm asking about other apps like games. Opera has a built-in ad blocker that works perfectly and you don't need any third party apps.

There's been rough instructions on how to root in the Q&A section for a bit now, and I put together a little guide after using those instructions on9 9-12-18.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s4/how-to/guide-rooting-wifi-version-galaxy-tab-t3841763
After rooting, you can use magisk modules or adaway or anything else.
I also remember reading that without root it's possible to use secure folder to block all ads on samsung devices (i didn't look into it), there's also a bunch of non-root adblocking apps available that require you to run a notification all the time.

I'm going to wait to root until the systems have been streamlined. I'm also leery of breaking the warranty less than a week into it.
In the meantime, I've tried Blokada which seems to be working without too much affect on battery life etc.
Try Adguard. The free version works for any browser. The paid version also blocks ads in apps.

Disconnect Pro works great, it just really expensive.
Adhell 3 works, but it takes a while to learn to use it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS9/comments/8su2an/anyone_using_adhell_3/e1291fy/
You must follow the instructions on the readme txt file available, section [ For users with v3.1.1 ] in the mediafire folder and use version 3.1.1.230

I must have got it free once, because it lets me install it for free, and yes it works great!

So dns666 actually worked for me, but took a few refreshes. Could take time to clear the cached DNS entries maybe?
dns66 works great. there is a little key icon on status bar though. to get rid of it, swipe the notification until the gear appears and go down to VPN and turn it off so the key won't show up. also, if DNS66 is not blocking ads you might need to update your hosts and add some if applicable. you need to update it regularly because sometimes one or two do not update on their own and it seems to throw the whole thing off.
Can anyone share the safest and best possible way to remove the built in ads without rooting?

What ads are you referring to?
If they are stored as unchangeable system settings, then you can't...
However, most of the ad-like functions can actually be turned off.
Root/custom OS's won't be far. This will be a popular phone.
In the meantime, you could use an ad blocking DNS like dns.adguard.com
And use ad blocking browsers like Firefox.

There's a lot of video tutorial on youtube. Just follow them. There is even a debloater tool you can use. Me, personally did not use the debloater tool yet. Just followed the tutorials on youtube and so far, never seen ads on my mi10t pro yet.
Try using the AdGuard, that's what I've been using. You can easily find it on Play Store or you know perhaps find a ***cough*** mod lol
But that app works perfectly fine without needing to root your phone at all.
