Expected battery life improvements with a custom ROM

Hello,
My main criterion in deciding which of the many custom ROMs to go with is amount of battery life improvement I will have.
I see that the AHRD rom is the most popular, but does it also have the best battery life?
Or will the battery life improvements only occur when the source code is released and the One X runs on an ICS Kernel? I am under the impression that for some strange reason, the One X is running on a gingerbread kernel.
Thanks
This should properbly be in the Q&A section.
But anyway if you want great batterylife you should try Cyanogenmod. Those are the most basic ICS roms. Without any Sense gimmicks to suck the power.
That coupled with the Franco kernel should give you good battery life.
At the moment I'm using insertcoin with bricked kernel. And i have about 30% left at the end of the day. And I'm a fairly heavy user. So I find that to be acceptable.
And sorry if my spelling or grammer sucks, I'm from Denmark, so English is not my first language

Using stock kernel for now (signature) ... will give a try faux kernel after the next official release.

Virtually everything that is asked on this board is a question. In fact, the majority of people who visit this board come to get a question answered. So the distinction is odd to me. People ask questions within threads that have declarative sentence titles all the time.
So if I had said "AHRD ROM gives insane battery life" then I guess it belongs in the general forum. Then if someone replies that Chameleon does even better as post #2, and I reply, why is it so much better as post #3. Then I have asked a question. My point is that in every thread there are questions, whether it's post #1 or post #3 seems like an arbitrary distinction. The fact that the Q&A section is not growing very quickly suggests confusion, since I still believe that if you analyzed the content of each post, and dare I say the overarching purpose of the board, is to ask questions. Newbies also see that he Q&A section isn't nearly as well frequented, so they post in the general section.
I think that the Q&A forum and the FAQ overlap in purpose. Anyway, just my 2 cents.
Thank you though for the answers to my question. I had expected, given the Anandtech review, that the One X would have comparable battery life to the iphone 4. However, I am finding this to be anything but the case, and I recently installed AHRD (wiped battery stats, etc). When trying to run down the battery (max brightness at 550 nits and surfing over 3g), I'm dead in 2 hours. My 2 yr-old iphone 4,with a peak brightness of about 500 nits, lasts approximately twice as long under identical conditions. I am finding the One X no better than the HTC Amaze, which has notoriously poor battery life. On the positive side, the One X's battery life is not as bad as the original EVO 4G, and the One X's standby battery drain is extremely low. I shudder to think what the battery life would be like if I had a US version which has LTE.
I have not noticed any improvements with any custom ROM thus far, but it's possible that using the screen at 75% brightness is basically such a determining factor that any gains in battery life are imperceptible to me. If someone can confirm that it is possible to drain the battery if you surfed at max brightness for 3 hours continuously and that that's just the state of phones today, then I can accept that. I just want to make sure that my phone is behaving normally and that any battery tweaks, cpu undervolting, wont' make a huge difference.

None of the custom ROMs change anything to do with battery consumption. A custom kernel could help, however I have tried them all and none of them make any appreciable difference.
Browsing over 3G seems to kill battery fast, I have never been able to get more than 3 hours screen time, and most of the time it is 2 or 2 and a half hours.
Hi thanks alot for the reply. I was thought that custom ROMs were supposed to improve battery life (one of the major reasons, if not the major reason, to install a custom ROM). In fact, in most of the intros for ROMs, they say something like "excellent battery life".
But you're saying that it is at the kernel level where improvements in battery life are made?
I agree with your conclusions--each custom ROM is about the same regarding battery life, and it is possible to surf and kill the phone in 3 hours of screen time, if I want my max brightness glory and over 3g.

ROM for best battery life?

Hi, I'm currently running PA ROM on my GS3. For those of you who don't know, it's pretty much a CM10 ROM with Hybrid/Tablet Mode. I get around 12 hours out of a battery on a school day w/full brightness on. I'd say that's only about average battery life. I have multiple batteries so this doesn't worry me much. But I still want to get the most I can out of my battery. Any kernel or ROM suggestions to maximize battery performance?
(I prefer Stock UI and don't play many games at all. I pretty much have Temple Run 2 and COD Black Ops and I play COD maybe once a month)

What ROM has the best performance and greatest battery life depends on its user. You will probably not get the answer you are looking for by asking this question here. To find the ROM that will best suit your needs, you will need to go around looking at ROMs and flashing them. Make sure not to just determine a ROM's battery life by running it for a couple hours. It is a good idea to run a ROM for a couple days before you judge its performance. Most ROMs claim to have the best battery life, and they all do have the best battery life, it just depends on your usage! Good luck!

I had this old Hero about 3-4 years ago. That thing was a DOG. It ate through a fully charged battery. Even though i had as much bloat removed as possible. To make matters worse i was constantly going in and out of service with my job as i was constantly driving.
For the origional hero i had so many freaking Roms to try out it was crazy.....
To find the best way to test battery life. what i did was i spent a day, and i downloaded my top 3 roms, and turned my screen on. I timed it at 100% battery life and left my screen at 100%.
I then did the same test, but i ran a stress test on each rom.
And finally i ran each rom, and i kept a phone call connected to my work phone. (free nights and weekends)
Turned out on all three tests the same rom had the longest battery life.
Thats how i tested my old hero. If you are dedicated enough you could try the same.
OP, it's hard to say due to everyone using phone differently, do a search and you'll see many of these threads that are gone and buried because there is no definate answer. YMMV on any rom. So try a few see what works for you.. There's FAQ thread in my sig check it out.
Rule 1 states to search before posting. It will reveal a long list of closed threads and the reason in every one. They are all the best.

Bad Battery Life

Hello,
So after hearing that everyone has been getting really good battery life on their M8, i wondered what the issue was with mine. So I tried different ROM's, kernels, tried wiping my data and downloading all my apps again, nothing seems to fix the problem. I've had my M8 for about 2 weeks and i'm currently running InsertCoin after leaving Viperone(because of the bad battery life), I have attached two screenshots from GSAM below, is it the google play services that is sucking all that juice out, what's the deal?.
Thanks.
Lol that's actually good Batley life in my books. You seem to be a heavy user and that is my typical battery life. Those other users who post battery life pics don't use their phones as much. Especially when you stream Spotify.

Teribble battery life on VS985

Hello fellas!
I'm on Fulmics 6.1 on my VS 985 and I'm getting terrible battery life. With only 10hrs of usage, I'm not able to even cross 3hrs SOT.
Please help me out in telling me the best custom rom and how to get better results.
Help will be appreciated.
Thank you!
My VS985 seems to also get terrible battery life across the board as well. I'm currently running PA 6.0.1 with aCC kernel and this setup has me on track for 4 hours of SOT. Stock kernel settings, I haven't even figured out how to get root yet

Best battery life ROM for the G4
