Are there any special steps needed for backing up and restoring with TWRP? Which partitions should I select?
I tried with the default settings and when I restored I couldn't boot.
Should I disable encryption? I had issues with that also and had to wipe it anyways.
Boot, system, data.
It worked restoring a backup on my phone.

Hello,,
I would like to know what is
Backup/Restore > Advanced restore > Data.
What does it restore exactly ?
Thanks
If you have made a nandroid backup, the advanced restore option let's you decide what to restore. If you select data, all of your data from the backup will be restored, but not the system and kernel. Do not do this between roms since this will propably create a boot loop. This feature is handy when you i.e have changed a file on your data partition and the whole system screws up. Instead of restoring everything, you just restore the backup of the data partition. Keep in mind that you will need to create a full nandroid backup to be able to use the advanced restore.
Thanks for all these infos ^^
Hello, I have CWM for long time but that's second time when I used it to restore my stock firmware with apps from a backup made before changing a ROM.
I was using Cyanogenmod 12.1 and before it I did backup of my stock firmware by CWM.
The problem is, when I did restore from a backup, It restored system well, but ... not exactly data.
System booted well, but I don't see any of my apps. Hovewer, when I check in App Manager, I see many apps that i HAD installed but they are shown as 0,00 B weight and have "android" icon.
Memory of my phone is filled as same as when I did backup but apps don't show.
How should I use restore from backup to restore entire system well?
Go to recovery and wipe data, cache and dalvik. Then use advance restore option to restore data and cache.
Now data should work but I recommend using folder mount or sd fix to modify the sdcard restrictions on stock kitkat.
The new partitions are not very clear to me...
What do I have to backup to fully restore the phone?
Boot, data, system and vendor? No IMGs?
Thanks!
I believe the ones that are already selected when you go to make a backup. Data, system, boot. Though I tried to make a backup last night and it failed to mount and wouldn't create a backup. It might be because I'm still encrypted
Cant recall so many partition options in my earlier phones, but with Oreo 8.1 on Rn5 I find these:
boot, cache, data, recovery, system, system image, vendor, vendor image, modem, efs
In all, 10 backup and restore options. I understand data and system are the main ones for backup and restore. And for safe keeping modem, efs as separate backup to the side (not used in regular backup/restore operations).
What about all these new partitions I'm seeing? system image, vendor, vendor image? If I am backing up 9.5.19 and moving to (miui 10) 8.8.23, is data and system all that is required to backup? Will 8.8.23 (fw-less rom) affect these new partitions mentioned? So to restore 9.5.19, just restore data and system and that is enough?
Much thanks.

System - rom
Data - app data & settings
Boot - kernel
It's best practice to restore a backup with the recovery version to which the backup was made
You may want to format data first (will delete everything on internal storage)
Wipe
Format data (option on right)
Restart to recovery then restore backup
If you don't restore data make sure you wipe it in advanced wipe
You must restore at least system & boot
Don't restore anything other than system data & boot unless you are doing it to solve a problem specific to other partitions

Flash no-verity-opt-encrypt-6.0 zip file (link here https://build.nethunter.com/android-tools/no-verity-opt-encrypt/) immediately (before rebooting into the system) after restoring your TWRP stock backup .
