[Q] Power banks and the 2A trick

Hi,
I have several power banks, each with different capacity.
I've noticed that when I connect my nexus to a 1A port, it says "charging (ac)",
but when I connect to the 2A port, it says "charging (usb)".
The usb charging (2A) is slower than the 1A charging.
Though I can understand why usb charging is slower than AC charging,
I don't understand why EVERY 2A charger has to be a usb charger?

On my Anker it is AC. It has a total 3A output, with the N5 using approx 1-2A I think. Check your charging cable quality, it does matter on power banks!

That means that your power banks are all designed for Android phones on the 1A port and iDevices on the 2A port. Basically, iDevice chargers put a voltage across the data pins to tell the device what rate the charger supports, while all other devices just short the data pins. You can get a charge only cable to get around this:

Newer chargers and power banks are starting to ship with what they call "smart charging" or "IQ charging," which allows you to get the full charge rate out of any port without a charge only cable.

Well, it's not a hard and fast rule. Some Android tablets will only charge off the 2A port even though that's the Apple standard. The manual for the battery itself says "refer to your device's manual to determine the proper port" which is a bunch of BS. When that battery pack first came out most Android phones still came with a 0.8A-1.0A charger, and the iPad and other tablets were the only devices that needed higher powered chargers. The newer models of it (http://www.ianker.com/product/A1208011) use the "smart ports" that will charge any device on either port at their maximum rate.

Fast Charging and slow charging, anything in the middle?

Is there a way to have something in the middle? I mean Slow charge take 1Amp from the wall charger (either the asus one or any other) even if it can supply 2 or more Amps, and fast charging only works when connected to a Quick Charge 2.0 adapter that I have: is there any kernel that can set maximum current used for charging? It would be nice to use the 2 Amps that the wall charger can supply, even without the quick charge support as many tablets do

i think it will over charge and damage your battery if you do that

Why is that? Quick charge 2.0 specs specify 2 amps for 5v. And other devices can use 2 amps from standard chargers without QC 2.0 support

what makes quick charge is the fact it charges at 5V, 9V, 12V and 20V depending on the device. it starts off at higher voltages when the battery is low and the voltage slowly rolls off to a standard 5v when the battery is near a full charge(i believe the roll off is at 80% battery?)
just thought i would slightly clarify QC, but as for the question i doubt you could do that safely if the hardware was never designed to bring in that much current, you would end up frying traces or something worse.
but some kernels do have the hack that makes it so the phone will always pull maximum amount of designed power by bypassing the data link bridge required to activate that. you see devices have it set up so if the data lines in the usb are not bridged together then the device will only pull a max of something like 1A and that is to protect the item the device is plugged into(like your pc) but when plugged into a usb charging adapter, that adapter might have the data lines internally shorted(or linked) to tell the device that you are not connected to something to transfer data, that your only charging the device and that the phone is free to draw its maximum power.

The problem is that with QC you may get higher voltages in order to decrease the amount of amps and still maintain the same power transferred but before going to the battery voltage needs to be reduced below 5V or it would fry the battery. It's OK to limit current when connected to USB of a computer in order not to damage USB ports that normally can only supply 0.5 amps.

Charging speed

Great Charging
This is the first phone I have had that would actually increase the charge significantly while navigating using google maps in the daylight. And it increases pretty fast.

My Anker QuickCharge 3.0 charger got my G5 from 0 to 100% in ~75 minutes while on. The same charger port got my spare battery in the cradle fro 0 to 100% in ~3 hours (it only pulled 5V).
After lunch today, I plugged it into a USB 3.0 port on my Lenovo T430, and it got from 60 to 100% in under 30 minutes while pulling over 1.2 amps (way above spec).
I'm happily impressed!

That's simply not possible unless you are using a non QC 3.0 charger or bad lead.

I'm loving the charging speed. It's like night and day compared to the M9 I used to own.

Doesn't seem much faster than speed charge 2.0 at all to me

Remember the G4 had a bigger battery so its only obvious the G4 last longer. But luckily we can buy multiple extra batteries :good:

As has been discussed elsewhere, QC 3.0 doesn't boost speed much if at all over 2.0. Instead it provides a continuous range of charging voltages (or amps? or whatever) so that it can charge at just the right rate. This should heat the battery less and (in theory, no idea how true/noticeable this will be after a year of use) wear down the battery less because of it.

Screen off = no difference in speed
Try with screen on then 3.0 is 2-3x as fast as 2.0
This has made a massive difference in the car when my screen stays on.
3.0 charges at a solid 1A with screen on as oppose to 2.0 that only musters 0.3-0.6A depending on phone temperature. ?

has anyone here tried charging the G5 using a true usb type c fast charger? i wonder what the outcome might be.
i'll be sad if i have to buy separate chargers just for this phone. (in case i get any true usb type c devices in future i mean)

Charged fine with my 6P charger. About 2A so not full whack, but no issues.

Qualcomm's Quick Charge goes outside the USB-C spec in order to be able to charge compatible Quick Charge devices faster (higher voltages when possible).
Dose this meet the USB-C spec, no... Would I be concerned about it, Not if I'm using a reputable QC charger and USB-C cable.

I'll be commenting on these cables and QC3.0 charging on my battery charging thread once I have more data. I have 2 QC3.0 USB wall chargers that I'm collecting data on now. These both have USB-A ports, so they need cable adapters.
But yes, early SPOILER @GottZ: The USB-C compliant cables (USB-A to USB-C) with the resistor limit the benefit of QC3 over QC2. But @stuart0001 does have a point with charging with the screen on.

I look forward to your findings.
After further experimentation, QC 2.0 will hit 1A with screen on when below 32deg. So I've found when screen on:
QC 2.0
<32 = 1A
32-35 = 0.6A
35-42 = 0.3A
>42 =? (I haven't tested yet)
QC 3.0 maintains 1A, certainly upto 42. Again, I've not tested higher than that.
This is all with the cable that came with the phone.

when talking about QC 2/3 you should also mention volt or just combine volts and amps to watts
just talking about amps is like saying A: has 2 inches Ampere and B: has 3 inches Ampere

Dear collegue. I am yet waiting for my X822. Maybe you could give me some information how long does it take you to fully charge your X820 from 0% and are you satisfied?

If the phone is off, I need about 1h30min. to full charge it when it is not in quick charge. First time I used QC and the phone heated up so that's why I know use the normall method.

For me it takes 1h20min with phone on and the capacity of the battery is correct measured with small USB tool. Fast charging is sometimes 8V and 2.5 A.

got the X822 aka the grey version in transit, couldnt resist it at 222US, ewen thow im not in the market for new mobile, allready pretty satified with the p8max that i like a lot and that dont got any quickcharge tech at all afaik, other then just plain 1.9amp charge cycle., according to my YZXstudio1270 meter, but the 4300mah takes here around 2.15 hour to fill, but slowing down massive the last 5 to 10% like the norm.
that tempo is fine by me, but have also purchased the Vinsic P3 terminator with QC and type C in & out. intended for the X822. seemed reasonable at 28US and with product-specs that shouldnt be to fare for real-world according to reviews.
JUst wondering if you can trick QC3.0 trigger on other devices, got an relative old usb trigger for QC, but no QC phones or at least chargers to check if 9v and 12v can be optainable and be used for ones 12v coreM tablet, just like that and push of an button..
anyway certainly looking forward for my first entry into my first QC device Lemax2 X822 and not least typeC.. LeMax2 lookzs wicked in grey. .:good:

You are sure that the quick charge is actually off.?
when checking on mine X822 and turning the knob in setting < battery < quick charge' to not active.
it still display the same voltage and above +6v to around 9v dynamic.. (its the same when the phone is off)
its like the "quick charge off function" doesnt do anything at all. (am on stock X822 assume its 16s EUI'build)
if you got an usb-meter, try to measure if the voltage actually stays around usb 5v level when turning the quick charge off. (mine it doesnt on stock QC charger)

Hello. Has anybody understand what this guy is writing. He always write muach but I cannot get any clue. Get off with your YZXStudio but just say how values you can achieve charging Le 2 Max with Vinsic Powerbank.

I'd like a charger for night-time charging. Does anyone know if there are ill effects by leaving your phone on quick charge for extended periods and doing so daily?
And would one risk damaging this phone by using any other 'regular' charger?

Any charger should be safe, just make sure the cable you use has Pullup resistor of 56kΩ, without that 56k chip all kinds of stuff can go wrong. usb A to usb C is a really bad setup and you'll need that chip for protection..

I bought the multi pack of Orzly cables , they are the best, relatively cheap... Sturdy.... And won't burn up your phone/house.

Right, but those links mostly focus on USB C standard, not QuickCharge 3.0, which I believe technically violates USB C standards. I'd still suggest sticking to cables confirmed to have the correct pull-up resistor, and if you want to use USB power delivery rather than QuickCharge technology you can also stick to chargers and power banks from that list. I think QuickCharge 2.0/3.0 will still charge faster than USB power delivery though, in which you probably won't find them on that list.
In any case, I bought an 1 port Aukey QuickCharge 3.0 car charger and it seems to work well to charge up to 4 amps. I also bought an Aukey 10000 mAh QuickCharge 2.0 power bank, and it too seems to charge my phone at up to 4 amps. Both were bought from Amazon Canada. I use them either with the cable that came with my phone or good micro USB cables and Tronsmart Micro USB to USB C adapters (which have the appropriate pull-up resistor.)

Question re: cable for Pixel 2XL

I am LOVING my Pixel 2XL as a previous iPhone user but I am needing assistance on power cables. I am used to the usual lightning cable that is used with my previous iPhone but my Pixel 2XL came with just a USB-C cable. What cable would I need to connect the 2XL to my laptop which only has regular USB cable slots?

You should be able to connect it with that cable. The end that plugs into the laptop/PC is the standard USB type; it's the end that plugs into the phone that's USB-C.

The others are incorrect. The phone comes with a usb-c to usb-c cable. What you need for your regular usb ports is usb-c to usb-a. Such as https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics...sb+a+cable&dpPl=1&dpID=41wgZRjwXYL&ref=plSrch

So in regards to actual quick charge: that is only capable using the plug adapter and USB C cable, correct? I will not be able to get a quick charge if I use the USB ports on my laptop...?

Correct quick charge will only happen using a usb-c to usb-c cord (and, knowing google, the actual charger) like what came with the phone.

Correct, unless the aftermarket charger supports USB-C power delivery. Qualcomm quick charge is not sufficient in this case.

So for those that charge their Pixel 2XL through the usb port on a laptop - how long does it take to charge your phone?
I ask because using a USB A to USB C cable plugged into my laptop seems to take forever. I hate to say it but my iPhone charged faster. Am I doing something wrong?

What you're doing wrong is not spending the extra funds to get a proper charger. USB ports on a PC are limited to 500mAh, thus charging will take an extremely long time. Some laptops do have a USB port designed to output a higher amperage, but they don't output the minimum of 2 amps used in smartphone chargers from the last five years.
If you don't have a proper charger, get one.

Research the Power Delivery (PD) specification. Then research PD power banks. There are many that output > 30W but it's doubtful you could charge both devices rapidly at the same time... but the PD power bank would charge either device rapidly. If you really need to charge both devices at the maximum rate simultaneously, you would be better off with a capable PD wall charger. There is also a P2XL "Accessories" section here where you will find more information on cables, chargers and power banks.

Indeed. I'm curious as to why @OU812_ is so resistant to getting a proper charger. It's the right tool for the job.

Then use a USB-A to USB-C cable and accept the slow charging rate. Your laptop's USB power output is the limiting factor here, not the cable. You will need a PD charger (or power bank) to charge rapidly.

With USB-C still not as common as MicroUSB, are there any power banks with Power Delivery?

Absolutely. If you are in the market be sure you confirm the powerbank allows USB-C both input & output so you can use your PD wall charger to top it off. The first generation power banks only allowed PD output, and you had to use the slower microUSB to charge. I've got my eye on THIS ONE. Just waiting for a price drop. :good:

What exactly would I be looking for in a charger that would allow quick charge for the 2xl? Also, will any usb-a to usb-c cable be suitable or it also has to have certain prerequisites to allow fast charging?

Afaik only usb c to usb c will fast charge

What iPad model do you have? Some of them support USB-PD for fast charging via USB Type C, but not all of them do. If it does support USB-PD fast charging, find a powerbank that supports it and you should have no issues. (Pixel 2 XL can use USB-PD as well)
