Which Carrier is better? Sprint or T-mobile? - Moto Z2 Force Questions & Answers

Since only the Sprint and T-Mobile variants can be bootloader unlocked, which has the best network?

T-Mobile for me, 3-4 bars LTE in the house out in the country. It really depends on your location..

Sprint's speed is terrible almost everywhere except my home, I have a tower a few hundred yards away. Work is down in a valley, I have zero reception, even though Sprints website says I should. I have never used T-mobile. Been with Sprint for 11 years now and we get zero benefits out of it, yet all the new customers do. But I think all carriers are like that?

T-Mobile + TMO variant is a must. Opting for this combo nets you an abundance of bands (2, 4, 5, 12, 46/LAA, 66, 252/255). Signal has been excellent for me indoors and outdoors, which isn't surprising given Moto's history with reception. With everything offered by this model I just don't see the point in buying any other carrier Z2.

But can I use a freedompop sim on the T-mobile version?
this site says no

T-Mobile Note II or AT&T Note II?

So is the T-Mobile Note II better than the AT&T one? I know it has a better 3G radio with quad band 3G that does 42mbps rather than the AT&T one that only does 21mbps and is only tri-band. How feasible do you guys think it would be to buy a launch day Note II on contract, immediately sell it on eBay and buy a T-Mobile Note II for the same price?
Plausible if you expect to get $650+tax for the AT&T note.
Is T-Mobile's coverage that bad in your area? If T-Mobile has good coverage in your area then why not just go for T-Mobile? It would make sense to go for Verizon LTE services for the large coverage and high speeds even with the Verizon premium price. But for me it makes no sense in going to AT&T if you have good coverage with T-Mobile. Both the price and speed differences between T-Mobile vs AT&T itself would turn me to T-Mobile and away from AT&T. The only thing that AT&T beats T-mobile is having a larger coverage area. But otherwise there is no reason to go for AT&T.
I just think you are trying to go the long way around. Which is not making sense.

I'm on contract with AT&T for another year so I'd have pay cancellation fees and what not.
And the T-Mobile service isn't very good in my area at all.. atleast it wasn't a year and a half ago.
Not to hog the thread, but, would a T-mobile Note 2 (once unlocked obviously), work on atleast HSPA speeds on AT&T - im not really too bothered about LTE, though obviously don't want the tmobile phone restricted to EDGE on at&t like iphones 4s are on tmobile _ this situation is the reverse of that scenario.
?
I have an option to buy a T-Mobile one for relatively cheap off a colleague, but want to use it on AT&T as thats the contract I have and T-mob don't have great reception in my house!!.
I know the 4G LTE in the T-Mobile Note II is currently disabled but... once enabled would it work on AT&Ts 4G LTE?

If you don't care about LTE, then get the T-Mobile one as that has 42mbps HSPA as opposed to 21mbps of all other Note II versions and it's also pentaband too so it'll work pretty much anywhere around the world

Yes, the T-Mobile phone has AT&T's LTE bands too, although when it will get enabled is still a question
tmobile note 2 will get LTE when its available
it has hardware built in
I'm curious does the T-Mobile Note II use a normal sized SIM card or a Micro SIM?

I'm considering the Note2 on all carriers even the international model if Multi-View doesn't come soon but last weekend tested the Note2 in a T-Mobile store & was impressed by the SpeedTest of 20 ( +/- 2) Mbps down & ~ 2 Mbps up (store is in a well covered area) & Friday night I was with someone where I'd more frequently use the Note2 & tested the network down on her original Galaxy S still pulling down ~10 Mbps down (+/- 5 with avg ~ 8 Mbps down-streaming quality video was great which I can't currently do with my Sprint EVO except off their network here on Wi-Fi) & still ~ 2 Mbps up.
So far I like T-Mobile speeds & plans (reasonably priced unlimited option should I need it though I usually but not always have access to fast Wi-Fi) yet I'm concerned they don't have the same coverage as AT&T (I'll also speedtest AT&T locally this week) so was considering getting the Note2 on AT&T & if not satisfied ($300 + $325 ETF) go get service on T-Mobile with option to go back to AT&T should I move. What limitations besides the 21 Mbps HSPA+ would I have if I get the AT&T model which would also offer me LTE ~ 20 miles away?

Here's my experience with T-Mo on a car trip from the NW to Midwest. The data was non-existent except on cities & towns, I'd say over 10,000. Where a data signal was available it was typically very good. I didn't speed test my note 2, but likely =/- 10Mbps. In the NW (Seattle area) I find some rural areas with poor data signal. My daughters house is on the edge of a town with pop of about 5,000. I have to go outside to get a descent data signal while she gets good signal inside with AT&T.
Personally I'm very happy with my T-MO service. I've been with then for 10 years, but only about 2 that I've been concerned with data, whereas previously I used primarily wifi and now using predominately data.
Hope with gives you at least one useful perspective.

I will test to confirm but I think T-Mobile service will be faster on HSPA+ (LTE is 20 miles away & don't expect to get it here soon except for Verizon) & less expensive but I'm starting to suspect the potential for range anxiety (that people with electric cars often feel) when traveling out of metro areas hence consideration of AT&T model (which offers superior coverage as well as LTE in some markets now) to use on T-Mobile if possible?

I'm going to look into this further (the T-Mobile pamphlet they gave me last weekend still listed "America's Largest 4G Network) but I'm going to try to check it out again in a T-Mobile store now:
http://www.fiercewireless.com/story/t-mobile-drops-americas-largest-4g-network-claim/2012-07-18

"T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42 is the 4G dark horse. It's really fast, covers a lot of the country, and is inexpensive. We found it to be faster than Verizon LTE for downloads in 11 cities (T-Mobile didn't win, though, because Verizon had much faster upload speeds.) Outside cities, where T-Mobile has coverage, it blew away other 3G networks. But that's the key: T-Mobile's truly rural coverage is slimmer than AT&T's or Verizon's."

t-mobile frequencies

Did t-mobile finally switched their 3g/4g frequencies to use any compatible ATT device? if,so, can I use my unlocked i747 with tmo 4g prepaid plan?
As I understand it, an AT&T phone won't be able to take advantage of T-Mobile's HSPA+ 42Mbps even if they have switched. T-Mobile's network is a work in progress, there's not telling if they have or have not. Try finding a coverage map?

Actually, it's a little more complicated than that. What T-Mo is going through is a two step process: first, 'refarming' (which will reallocate AWS (EDGE) channels to LTE Band 4, and also turn on the AT&T access), and then next year rolling out their LTE. AT&T phones use the same channels/bands, so the refarming is all that's necessary to access HSPA+; unfortunately, the refarming is going on now and isn't complete in more than about 12-15 markets. However, my home market (Chicago) is listed as "promised" but changing by the day, and I am now routinely getting the magic 4G light on my status bar (however, not in farther out suburbs and the like). This is in contrast to just a month ago, where it only seemed to work in the Loop. So, in other words, check with (ahem) sources around the Web that are doing a good job of tracking what markets are being worked on and which ones are live. If you're not in a major metropolitan area, you'll probably have a wait. I just got the phone November 9th, and for this market, it's been pretty much perfect timing.

Thinkin' about leavin' VZW for T-Mobile...

I currently enjoy my Verizon M7 with an old "grandfathered" Verizon unlimited data plan... I really have no complaints about the service level, phone calls are clear and don't drop, LTE data speeds are great... Nonetheless, I dislike Verizon's increasingly-successful efforts to lock-down their devices to an unbreakable degree, I dislike the fact that Verizon STILL hasn't released Lollipop for their M7, AND I feel I'm paying way too much money every month for my line and 3 other lines for my wife and kids (they DON'T have unlimited data - I pay for 2GB per month for each).
So, T-Mobile's month-to-month plans, their offers to buy out Verizon contracts, and the fact that their LTE coverage is reportedly faster than VZW's in 20 USA major metros is tempting...
Questions:
Does modern GSM on T-Mo devices still buzz through every nearby speaker?
How solid are telephone conversations on T-Mobile? Are you happy with their USA network? I'm working around the greater SF bay area with business travel to major metro areas - few road trips...
Are T-Mo's "unlimited" data plans truly unlimited, or do they throttle down speeds after a certain threshold?
Dare I keep using my m7wlv (verizon's HTC One variant) on T-Mo's network? Presumably I can just swap out the SIM, but I suspect limited band selection, etc. Likewise with my girls' iPhone 5ses...
Thanks!
If you get coverage in your area with T-Mobile, then the choice is yours. Nobody will blame you for the cost and device support issues... Not having T-Mobile ever (because their coverage is horrible in my area) I can't vouch for the call quality being any better than AT&T, which was terrible on gsm.
If you travel outside of major metropolitan areas, your 4g will probably have a bad time. Just judging from the few friends that have T-Mobile service asking to borrow my phone to call or look something up...
T mobile lied to my wife about their coverage before she got the device and then tried to say she didn't send the device back when she decided to switch back to Verizon. Plus they have probably the worst customer service ever. It took nearly five days worth of phones calls just to get them to refund the $600 they charged her for the device she sent back. After this experience I wouldn't suggest anyone use t mobile but some people like it I guess.
Still haven't tried them - can our m7wlv work properly?
Thanks @disconnecktie. I hear you, although I expect there are many similar stories from former Verizon customers...
But yeah - I walked into the local T-Mobile store yesterday and it felt a bit slimy in terms of the say-anything sales force looking to have me sign up for a phone. I left without so much as a SIM.
I'll still probably try them to out, but I thought I should look into whether or not my m7wlv can be made to take full advantage of T-Mobile's network; or if the only fair test would be on a proper t-mo phone...
I've heard that our phone won't pickup the LTE bands used by T-Mobile by default, but I've also heard that with the MSL code one can enable all LTE bands for use. Has anyone messed with this and gotten their Verizon M7 to experience those kick-butt LTE speeds on T-Mobile I've been reading about? I'm also impressed by T-Mobile's deal with Google for Project Fi...
As far as I know the Verizon phones get locked out of the other frequencies at a hardware level which means no amount of software modifications will change anything.
I'm pretty sure it's set at the baseband firmware level, likely above my pay grade to edit...

Most likely because of the model number difference, it is hardware dependant. You RUU a dev/att edition m7 (same model number) to a tmo edition, and you still will not get aws hspa. I am going to attempt doing some edits and see if it will work as a friend of mine gave me his tmo sim to test this over this weekend. I have read it is hardware locked and nothing software side will enable those frequencies. If I do get it to work or not work, I will let you know. The other variants of the m7 will not save NV edits upon reboot. Hopefully the vzw one will.
Edit: Tried QPST and QXDM... Odd thing is our NV shows all bands unlocked. Well, I did the same edits another user did for his Vzw M8 and still rebooted with only Edge. Checked NV and some bands were now disabled, so it did change the NV values. Sadly I would assume our hardware will not support GSM bands at the NV level. I could try to flash a T-mobile radio, but I would think it is different hardware, so hopefully I don't have a heard brick on my hands after that. I will update when I get some more testing done.

Flashed the 7.x T-Mobile radio. Phone would boot and wouldn't get signal and reboot after about a minute. Still had the NV edits in place. So it must be hardware related on why we cannot get US carrier (ATT/TMo) HSPA and LTE.

Oki thank you for trying
Ran into something interesting today. So after my radio Flash, the edge in my area has been wonky and odd. I did an ruu to hopefully fix any damage to the partition the radio Flash did. Reinstalled nusenseven. I use the traffic monitor. Most of the time it caps out at 35 kbps as it is edge. Some rare times I will see it wig out and pump 500k to 1.5mb for about 3-5 seconds. I do not know if it is software glitching or if the phone is on a refarmed edge band and only doing edge because of software limitation.
I live in a big city where there is refarmed towers all over the place.

Band 30 on the G4.

This is a carbon copy from my post on howard forums but this is a more technically based crowd.
Well, I am hastily planning my transfer to ATT from Tmobile tonight and stumbled across the band list for ATT. I currently have a LG G2 which I really like a lot and was looking to go to a G4 when they are available.
I checked the current bands used by AT&T and the list is quite impressive. I have currently 4 towers within range of my house and a -90 db signal on my front porch. This is impressive since I only get Tmobile on my second floor or the end of my driveway. With Verizon, Tmobile, and Sprint the towers are about 3 miles away. AT&T has 2 towers that are 3 miles away and then two more within a mile. This is where the improved signal comes from. There is also a public safety tower less than a mile away. Both ATT and Verizon are dropping antennas on all the new public safety towers in the county. Sprint and Tmobile not so much because they are still in the LTE upgrade phase. So ATT is the logical choice even though data is capped. I refuse to go to CDMA and my work Verizon phone still doesn't work in some parts of my house. Not an option. I would still like it if ATT had wifi calling.
On to my question. I saw ATT will be adding band 30 support at the end of the summer. I am not sure if they own band 30 in my area but I am in the process of looking. According to phone scoop the LG G4 lacks band 30 support. The Samsung S6 has it. I really like my G2 and the G4 is the logical upgrade. I also know that the G4 has not officially been released so phone scoop and several other sites might not be accurate.
1) Does the LG G4 currently have support?
2) Is there future support with firmware upgrade when band 30 is actually available?
3) Is the chipset capable of it to be added with NV editing like with Band 12 on the newer phones without filters?
4) Should I not worry about this feature since band 30 is not owned by ATT in central Virginia.
5) Should I not worry about the G4 since the S6 is comparable?
6) Will the short range of 2.3 ghz negate the speed boost just like the 2.5 sprint currently deploys which seemed to only work next to the tower when it was WiMAX?
Thanks. Looking forward to having a phone that actually works like a phone and not a drive by wifi thief.

Question Can I switch to Verizon with this phone?

It seems most of the 4G and 5G bands are compatible. I'm just not sure about 3G with the CDMA vs GSM. My service through TMobile just hasn't been good enough.
Thanks!
2125 should work fine. 2127 may or may not work. The rest will not work
Verizon's network is mostly 4G or newer nowadays. CDMA will be a factor in coverage but it's minor. I occasionally will pop into the Verizon network with a random device if I know it's compatible with the bands Vzw use. Pop in a sim and give it a whirl.
I'm using Verizon on my 2125. My coverage and service speed is way better in my area than it was with TMobile. Calls texts and data all work fine.
Hi, I'm using Verizon with this phone. No issues at all. My phone usually is on the 5g network, sometimes on 4g. Only thing is that voice over wifi does not work. Besides that service is great.
VoWifi doesn't work. I haven't found a way to enable that on Verizon. Everything else works fine for me. Speeds could be better but that's probably just my area.

CDMA is not a factor in any LTE or 5G phone. Verizon requires a flag CDMA_Less for this phone. Others that are Verizon phones have that set automatically in the back end. This flag has been required for correct functionality for at least 3 years.
I loved VZW and been with them over a decade. I recently switched to T mobile and it was for one reason only. VZW sold many of their towers and TMobile bought them. Tmo used to suck. Service and customer service. But they did one thing. They offered NR..VZW has already admitted that their 5g is a combination of 4G and 5G. UW is available but you will find that to be very limited. 5G is just a marketing tool. The consumers get the short end of the stick and the lawmakers allow the FCC to change the definition of what 5G speeds are. VZW sells the OnePlus 8 5g, will allow the OP9 and OP 9 pro to work. Also while your phone will work on VZW it will not have the correct radio in it to truly take advantage of 5G. This article will explain it
OnePlus 9 Pro Is Now on Verizon, But You Might Want to Stick With Samsung
Although the OnePlus 9 lineup is now certified for Verizon, spectrum limitations, setup bugs, and other oddities mean that a Samsung handset may be the better choice for those not committed to the OnePlus brand.
www.pcmag.com
Uhhhhh, what? None of that is actually true. And that article doesn't "explain" anything. It's literally not saying anything close to what you are.
Perhaps this will explain it better. There's a reason VZW isn't selling the OP9s. VZW has invested heavily in c-band while T-Mobile is utilizing the low sub 6. The OP9 doesn't have the c- band capabilities since most of the world is doing mm UW and sub 6.too tired to go any further. Most people on VZW had to shut 5g off because of the latency issues. If VZW does indeed sell the Op9 pro it will be c band compatible but will be more expensive to produce. Again I didn't switch to TMobile because VZW did something wrong. I switched because if I'm going to buy a 5g phone in 2021 I want it to work in 5g now not in 2022. VZW is late to the game in true 5G. And they had a net loss of subscribers because of this. Personally I do not like tmo. I don't like their CEO especially so im not knocking VZW.

Your post still had no basis in reality whatsoever. I don't give 2 ****s about Verizon, I'm not trying to defend them. I'm just saying you're spreading completely false information.
Here, I'll break it down:
Verizon sold their towers and T-Mobile bought them? That's... just not accurate at all. Are you talking about this?
America Tower: T-Mobile co-locating gear on Verizon towers we bought
American Tower sees a strong future ahead for its portfolio of cell towers it acquired earlier this year from Verizon Wireless, according to an American Tower executive. T-Mobile US, in particular, has been looking to co-locate its network gear on those towers as it expands its LTE network. |...

Verizon leased their towers to a 3rd party company who then sublets the towers. You DO realize that each cell tower holds multiple carriers, right?
Tmo used to suck.

Every carrier has good and bad spots. Where I live, T-Mobile has been on par with Verizon for years. In other areas Verizon sucks. Some areas T-Mobile can't get signal at all.
Service and customer service.

T-Mobile has been leading customer service metrics for like a decade now. They've actually been going a little downhill since the Sprint takeover, but T-Mobile has been the gold standard for YEARS.
VZW has already admitted that their 5g is a combination of 4G and 5G.

"admitted". So is T-Mobile in a bunch of areas. And AT&T. Also, you're thinking of SA and NSA (standalone and non-standalone), not NR. NR (New Radio) allows for SA and NSA, and it's a Qualcomm thing, not a Verizon or T-Mobile thing.
5G is just a marketing tool

I'm not even touching this. This is pure fantasy.
The consumers get the short end of the stick and the lawmakers allow the FCC to change the definition of what 5G speeds are.

Lawmakers and the FCC don't change "definitions" of "5G speeds". Nobody does. 5G isn't determined by speed at all. 5th Generation connectivity. It's how phones connect to the towers, not what speeds they run at. If you're getting 1mb/s on a 5G tower, does that mean you're on 3G? OF COURSE NOT. Just like if you're connecting at 200mb/s on LTE, that doesn't make you "5G".
Also while your phone will work on VZW it will not have the correct radio in it to truly take advantage of 5G.

I really don't think you read the article you linked. The only thing the OP 9 and 9 Pro lacks is wifi calling on Verizon. MAYBE you're trying to say the 9 won't connect to MM-Wave while the Pro can, but it's like that on every carrier. The 9 won't connect to T-Mobile's MM-Wave either. Now, the article DOES mention that the 9Pro won't SAY it's on MMWave, because it's missing the ICON. The Icon.
Insiders tell me that OnePlus could fix this by adding a Verizon "icon pack" to its firmware. I've asked OnePlus for comment and I'll update this when I hear back. The phones also don't work with Verizon's Wi-Fi calling feature. There's just no option to turn it on. Verizon tells me there is no plan to add that, at least for now. I've also asked OnePlus about that.

Seriously, I have no idea what you're trying to get at here. But it's all FUD.
Now, as to your last post:

Yeah, they sold one model and it FLOPPED. Nobody was buying it, so they chose not to have it take up space on their shelves. They still support every model since the 6T on their network.

The C-Band auction literally ended what, 3 months ago? Verizon and T-Mobile don't even plan on rolling it out until late 2022. Why would they sell phones with it NOW? Also, the "rest of the world"? The EU hasn't rolled out MMWave yet, as they just ended the first rounds of spectrum auctions. MOST countries barely have any 5G, if any. And that's fine, because 5G is mainly about capacity, not speed. And they don't need the capacity right now, LTE-A is working fine for them.
Also, you're confusing C-Band with the existing mid-band spectrum that T-Mobile acquired from Sprint, which is used on band 41 and is known as the "faster" 5G (though still slower than MMWave). T-Mobile's low band 5G isn't about speed either, it's about capacity. You're lucky to get over 75mb/s with their low band stuff. Just like Verizon. Go figure. The lower bands have slower speed and reach further, that's just how physics work.
Most people on VZW had to shut 5g off because of the latency issues. If VZW does indeed sell the Op9 pro it will be c band compatible but will be more expensive to produce.

Again, NO carrier has C-Band deployed right now, and won't be deployed in any large scale for at least a year. Why would they make a 9 Pro with it later on when it will be at least TWO models behind? (The 9T and the 10, possibly the 10T as well)
I switched because if I'm going to buy a 5g phone in 2021 I want it to work in 5g now not in 2022.

Uhhh, ok. Despite Verizon's 5G speed sucking, and MMWave not being anywhere CLOSE to ready for prime time, it still WORKS. Again, I don't think you understand that there's a separation between 5G and speeds.

Verizon has been losing customers to T-Mobile for years now. It doesn't have anything to do with 5G, it's about being priced out of the budget market. They want to focus on ARPU vs number of lines, while T-Mobile took the opposite approach, hence them giving out free lines right before every earnings report.

I have the LE2127 I got straight from TMobile. So maybe a no go?
I believe it should work as long as your phone is unlocked, whether it's a tmo or global phone shouldn't matter much except of course for adding some tmo specific bands.

the 2125 and the 2127 is basically the same phone. It will work perfectly fine.

Basically, but not exactly. There's a reason global converted OP9P from tmo must reflash the tmo modem for each OTA.
Since OP already has the 2127, worst case is you give it a shot and see if it works. Maybe it will, may not.
