Hello,
I will getting the Xiaomi Mi 5S Plus tomorrow.
What are some of the first things I should be doing? I feel like I will not like the MIUI too much as I have used stock android on my old Nexus and more recently Cyanogen on my OPO. I plan to install Cyanogenmod on the phone as soon as they release it.
I believe I should do the following to prepare for that so that I do not need to start from scratch in the future (unsure of order and how to do it, some advice and guides here would be helpful, as well as an explanation of the purpose of each step):
- install custom recovery (I'm 99% certain I need to do this to install another ROM)
- root the phone (I don't think this is necessary, but allows me to do other things e.g. use Greenify)
- unlock bootloader (not sure what the purpose of this is)
Are there any other steps I should take?
Thanks in advance!
Unlock bootloader-twrp-miui eu rom - bingo
No need for greenify
Also ex Nexus use here

Can you please explain what you mean a bit more?
No need to root?
What is mi ui EU rom? I have intl version of the device (Hong Kong). Does this make a difference?
Thanks!
Without unlocking the bootloader, you can't install any custom recovery or custom ROM, just the official Xiaomi releases.
The eu version have less chinese apps and some minor changes compared to the global version. You can check the differences in their website.
Once you have unlocked the bootloader and install twrp, becoming root is pretty easy.

MIUI EU here

I also use Xiaomi EU. It works great. If you want the UI to look slightly more like a Nexus or Pixel try the "Pixel N" or "Android N" themes.

If you are talking about xiaomi.eu, yes it's different.
It's based on official China ROM and as you can see the release of official Global ROM is lagging behind china rom for both mi5s versions. For example stable for Plus is 8.0.4.0 for Global (I guess just one release) while it's 8.2.2.0 for China.
It's cleaned from Chinese apps, it contains many European languages (including Italian) and gapps.

I'm on 8.0.4.0 of Global Rom and I must admit that this is the first phone which makes me so satisfied. I'm gonna stay close to later products from Xiaomi as long as they keep doing this way.
I don-t understand the different ROM-s.
I now have 8.0.4 Global Stable.
It seems tha a 8.2.2 Global Stable should come out since 20 February (but did not come out)
Then there is a 7.3.9 Global Beta released March 10
http://en.miui.com/thread-534687-1-1.html
But why Beta is a LOWER number (7.3.9 to 8.0.2)???????????
Very confusing

4GB is a lot of Ram in my opinion.
Think if you need 64 or 128 of storage in your phonbe, and make your decision based on that.
As far as I know, for my usage (and I am a heavy user) 4GB of RAM is enough nowadays
I am on global ROM. I cannot send MMS picture messages! I have allowed permission in Gallery. Thanks for trying to help. I have now resolved the problem!. The reason phone was not sending was because of 3G signal only at my home. When I tried in a 4G area not far from my location a picture message flew through. Many thanks re whats app .I use same and there is no difficulty sending pictures on it as I Have good broadband 240 megabytes boosted to almost double that with an Asus rt -87 u router and an Asus AC -66 extender. Regards!
hi, i need know after so far try so many custom rom,and i'm feel need stopped and find one to used for daily, please help me to find it, hopefully someone here will help me, thanks,.
OK, let's go.
what you are asking for is a personal thing, personal things are like girlfriends and motorcycles each person has his, but they will not have ours equal.
For Xiaomi with the same amounts of settings without losing both performance. I recommend the MiuiPro rom. is a recent and ambitious project but the developer has stopped designing the Miui9.
All updates are Miui10 (I do not like it)... (I do not know why he stopped)
For your Mix2 (it's the same as mine) I use and recommend miuipro rom 9.5.6.0 China Stable. (It has the name china but contains all the languages.) And extremely fast, if configured properly. (read mode, battery saving, empty cache etc etc etc...)
The best custom rom for a smartphone does not exist.
There is the one you like the most but as our personal opinions you will like more of each ...
best regards !!!!

the difference between miuiPro and miu Eu is very visible in the costum interface, in miuPro there are many bugs that make me think twice using v.8.7.26 if it is very stable and good, just using the battery is not good, and I feel hot making games HD like PUBG

Use debloated miui 11. Good roms are MIUI eu 11.0.11 and MiuiMix 11.0.11 (favorite). It's okay with stock kernel but I use agni kernel. Here's a page with many resources for curtana in one place but be careful before installing anything you haven't seen anyone using.
Curtana Premium
Almost forgot... You can use gcam for slightly more detailed photos than miui camera. There are numerous versions. Check out curtana photography in telegram. Personally I only use gcam for raw images. But for quick shots that you won't be doing pixel peeping on, stock camera is enough.
Hello ftriends, I'm a little confused, are all the ROMs on CurtanaGang valid for the international, European version of the phone? I am very interested in this. I have a new Redmi Note 9 pro bought in Romania. Thanks

That website is not known to a lot of people. Roms made for miatoll will work on your phone. Be careful to NEVER install a rom that's made for curtana only.
The roms listed usually have a support or discussion page linked so look for it. Information in the changelogs can also help you decide. Just make sure that you confirm a rom will work on your phone. The installation guide or the rom thread will usually tell which phone the rom is made for. Look for it and post questions there if possible.
Oh! You said you have a new phone... Don't do anything regarding flashing ROMs before you unlock the bootloader.

Thank you @twistyplain for your detailed answer, I understood. For now my big-big problem is unlocking bootloader... I'm trying hard for three weeks without any result...everytime it saying "wait for 168 hours..." I know I must not sign out from Mi account, don't reset phone...etc... but nothing, same 168 hours to wait... I don't know what to do anymore... any advice is welcome! Thank you.

Thanks again @twistyplain, I know all these steps to unlock ... it doesn't work unlocked. My phone came with MIUI-11 but it was updated to MIUI-12. Probably because the SIM card is not activated on their server (server error ... etc) and is not activated after restart, reset (three times!). Maybe it will work with another SIM card...I'll try it...

I think that's the problem. You must make sure that the sim card to be activated is able to send an international SMS (Mandatory) and it should (maybe) be the active data sim. When you try to activate it make sure you're using mobile data using that Sim card to be safe. Also, try to activate it without another Sim installed.
My primary Sim card activated properly the first time but Sim 2 has never successfully activated. Every time I reboot it tries to activate Sim 2 but always fails. I just wait for it to fail and clear the error message because it affects nothing.

Hi there, so where can i found those?
I'm on the same train, i'm searching a debloated firmware for my new 9 pro.
From what i gather through forums and posts is that the Havoc-OS is the custom firmware+official with the less issues, unless those you mention are better.
I searched both rom subforums but i can't find them.
The closest i find is this which for some weird reason doesn't have as many posts as one could expect Lol

Havoc is AOSP meaning it is based on vanilla Android (not miui). It has a large thread on xda so you can browse that to know about the rom. Official means that it's the one recognized by havoc os developers -- not that it's in any way affiliated with xiaomi. The AOSP rom that most people agree is better than most is Evolution X. However, better than other AOSP roms doesn't mean it's better than miui based ROMs. I always use roms based on stock hence the reason i recommend them. They're generally more stable and require much less effort to get going.
Regarding the source of MiuiMix, you can follow the telegram link in the thread you just posted just under "We follow also other devices, you can know more and update in our telegram channel". I won't repost the link because I'm not sure it's even allowed. When you get there search for your device codename. For instance mine is curtana so i just type #curtana in the search box snd i see a list of the roms released for my device.
Miui eu has a dedicated website so look for it.

I haven't. However the android 12 pre release GSI boots but the system UI keeps crashing apparently.
Why do you want a GSI? Is there a specific ROM that's missing that you want to flash?

I prefer a more official release of ROM... No offend to any Devs... Just prefer a ROM I can stick to longer... Rather than one that stop maintaining and had to switch again and again... I've had a phone before... No official ROM... And someone making tonnes of ROMs, but none go official...
Prefer a close to native ROM... Or lighter ROM. AOSP/LOS.
I have only a laptop with 8GB RAM, also no knowledge to build my own ROM.

I think the same about the custom roms. I can recommend https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations which I used for other phones, but didnt try a GSI with poco f3 yet, need to wait for unlocking.
Btw unlock delay is so useless and only annoys customers. All shops where I looked for the poco f3 sold it unlocked for +30€.

I can understand why they do it, it's to stop the people sell the device on AliExpress, buying in bulk from the pre launch sale and install malwares on the device and ship out.
So the 7 days delay means they have to hold it in stock and make their business not very nice... Stock pilings.
I just bought my Poco F3 (8/256), and initially I never really gave any thought about flashing a custom ROM, since at this level, the phone itself is amazing, and I can use it well and reliably.
But I came across people being really passionate towards the EU ROM over the Global one. And they aren't doing it for the sake of customization, they're doing it for literal quality of life improvement.
With that said, as the title suggests, my interest is piqued with the topic, and just wanna ask if it's worth doing so?
I hope you guys could give a conclusive, objective list, not just simply because you use one or the other. (Would really appreciate it :> )
Also I have a few other questions;
Is it technically a custom ROM but is essentially official ROM (I.e. it's from Xiaomi directly so practically nothing changes and everything is still optimized and built for the F3)
Can you go back to the default ROM like nothing happened (Literally back to stock, is that possible?)
And is it safe from a I wanna keep my phone as stock as possible, without any modifications (I really just want the EU if it's officially from Xiaomi and really is stock)
Also maybe you guys can throw around tutorials, and instructions (Like with is TWRP?)
As someone who came from the era of primitive Android modifications (Rooting around 2014) I managed to boot loop an old device of mine, and so I'm understandably hesitant towards these things m
Hopefully my questions could be answered by such an awesome community. Appreciate it :>
Stay safe always guys!
Edit: I really value keeping the phone as is (The experience and the technicalities) I just really want my phone to still be reliable and free from bugs and headaches (With exception to the ones caused by the phone itself, not cause I messed around with my phone)
only one way to find out

Not worth it, the changes are very little, like e.g. added Ads toggle directly in the initial Android Setup and probably other very minor stuff.
Unless you're talking about Xiaomi.eu which is a Custom ROM. I personally use it and can recommend it. Latest MIUI from China, optimised for rest of the world. Advantages are more features and in-house apps like MIUI Phone (with Call Recording), MIUI Contacts, Xiaomi Health, etc..

Wait I'm confused?
Xiaomi.eu is different from the EU ROM?
Does that mean that the particular ROM you're using is actually a Custom ROM (From the community rather than from developers/ POCO themselves)
If so, what exactly are the advantages it provides aside from the one you mentioned? How about substance?
And does that mean that it is outside the realm of being official, and therefore not ideal to someone like me looking to stick to stock everything to avoid the hassle and headache?
Thank you!

Yes 100% different. Many get confused about this because of the website's name.
It's very much a Custom ROM, but very stable, since it just takes the latest MIUI ROM from China (China gets the latest ROM first, because Xiaomi is chinese). The community devs also did a few adjustments to make the chinese MIUI ROM suitable for the rest of the world, like adding Google Services which China doesn't use, etc..
I'm not sure if you can flash the Official EU ROM without having to unlock the bootloader. I think you can.
But for Xiaomi.eu you definitely need to unlock it. For me personally it was worth it, but I'm also very specific about my customisations and also always unlock & root my Android devices.

Damn.
Do you personally recommend going through the hassle of switching over to Xiaomi.eu, as someone who wants to stick to stock as much as possible but also want the best ideal experience (best battery life, general quality of life stuff)
I also wanna avoid stuff like bootlooping, issues with my warranty, not being able to go back to the official state of the phone etc.
Can you also comment on the opinions I see mostly saying that there is better battery over at Xiaomi.eu. and if so by how much? Are talking an extra hour or two on your screen on time and general battery life? Or at best a couple of minutes?
Thank you

Hm. Well, Global and EU ROMs are always behind China ROM and Xiaomi.eu Custom ROM.
First thing you'd notice is the Xiaomi apps like Phone, Contacts, and other Xiaomi apps being improved and having a modern Design. You also get new features like Horizontal Recents-Menu, ability to smoothly adjust Font-Thickness. And probably more obvious stuff.
It's been a long time since I last used Stock ROM, but.. battery life is the same.
Also: When people claim much improved battery life on Vanilla Android ROMs or other specific ROMs, take them with a grain of salt, unless these people do scientific tests.
There's always variation, and it highly depends on the features that are enabled, your apps and its services that are running in the background and other stuff like your specific brightness setting.
You may get bootlooping when trying out Custom ROMs, that can happen, but you can always revert back to Stock ROM. You just need to do research on how to flash a Custom Recovery like TWRP, how to flash a Custom ROM and how to revert back to a Stock ROM.
Unlocking Bootloader and using Custom ROM is probably not covered under warranty, but if you can, you can revert to Stock, lock the bootloader, and say "I haven't modified my phone's software", they wouldn't know.
The best MIUI experience is Xiaomi.eu in my opinion, however you have to take time in doing research about TWRP, Xiaomi.eu, Mi Flash (to revert to Stock if sh*t goes wrong), and yeah.
From Global to EU ROM (Official) however, is not worth it at all. No differences basically.

What about OTA? From what I've read in the past, the Updater app in Xiaomi.eu just downloads the full package and we dirty flash the package it in TWRP. Is that still the case?

Yup, on Xiaomi.eu that is the case.
However it only takes 3 minutes to flash the ROM and to reboot. That's literally it.
It's possible for a system to work together with a Custom Recovery, in order to automatically flash updates, but apparently in 2021, we haven't gotten there yet.
I've heard of some Vanilla Android Custom ROMs having fully automatic OTA-updates. AICP or crDroid I think? Not sure..
There's two option with Custom MIUI ROM ( Bare minimum modifications or else there is Highly modifiable MIUI ROM's like OneOS, MIUI MIX, Hellas MIUI, XTRV, MIUIVN, MI-Globe, etc. ) , Xiaomi.eu weekly beta update and a Xiaomi.eu Stable update which are both based on chinese beta and stable as the name suggests. Personally, I use the Weekly update and i have not found any issues for which i would consider it a deal breaker. I am Rooted and happy. I will never go back to Stock ROM because of how poor the battery life was. And also to factor the google dialer and messages app. I do not like it.
I agree with everything @Animesh Singh said, except the Battery life part.
dreamytom said:
Sì, su Xiaomi.eu è così.
..
Ho sentito parlare di alcune ROM personalizzate Android Vanilla con aggiornamenti OTA completamente automatici. AICP o crDroid penso? Non sono sicuro..

Just to complete the list, even with Syberia I get the update via OTA.

If you really like to more Google default apps than MIUI default apps such as Phone, Messages, Google Discover, etc. then changing from Global ROM to EU ROM from official MIUI site is good to go. Unlock the bootloader first then you can flash the EU ROM. Otherwise just stick with Global ROM, everything is same from performance, battery life, etc. But then again if you prefer a Custom ROM based on MIUI, then MIUI EU from Xiaomi-EU is better, it has better stability and more features as well since it is from Chinese ROM which always release earlier features and bug-fix improvement than the official MIUI ROM. Hope this help
You can check all xiaomi.eu features from the link below (scroll down a bit).
MIUI 12.0 - MIUI 12.0/12.1/12.2/12.5 STABLE RELEASE
STABLE RELEASE RULES WHEN POSTING 1. If a ROM is not published DONT ASK ABOUT ITS ETA 2. If a ROM is not published DONT ASK why! 3. If a ROM is available, download it and use it 4. If a ROM has bugs, post the bug to the bug section if the BUG is not already listed 5. If you use any form of...
xiaomi.eu
Notable features for me are:
Increased volume in headphones after some tweaking in sound settings, better standby and battery life, wallpaper carousel (it has an anime category in xiaomi.eu), better theme store imo because of the AOD category which i couldn't find in the global but most of the stuff is in chinese so it might not be as appealing for everyone, no ads etc
I have been looking at a Poco f3 5g. It will have the UK (EU?) Rom. Should I still try xiaomi.eu?
I have a mi 9t at the moment with pixel experience but I'm willing to give Xiaomi ROM another go.
I like Google dialer and messages app. I don't record calls and don't understand why people make a big deal of this?
Is there less bloat in the xiaomi.eu ROM compared to the official EU ROM?

I have read somewhere that xiaomi.eu have some significant better stuff, i think it was on reddit. I ordered mine yesterday, my Poco F3 comes with the Global ROM so i am also thinking on flashing it to xiaomi.eu or to the Official EU ROM, i am still thinking more about changing to the EU ROM other than xiaomi.eu since it's official and it's the first time i am thinking about flahing a phone, is it possible to change from official Global ROM to official EU ROM and if so, do you know how can i do it?
I personnly wouldnt bother still got bloat like virus scanner pretty sure it Avast with a diffrent stamp dont care for the music and video apps to much bloat , the themes app sucks to ,, gonna flash something make it worth your while like Arrow
