Hi guys
I bought a cheap OnePlus 5t. It's had a hard life, but everything seems to be working ok.
Except- 3 or 4 times a day it starts having phantom/ghost touches. Usually at the edge of the screen (I put touch tracking on) -I've rebooted, factory reset, but no improvement.
Anyone know the best way forward? Don't think I'll get warranty, so is it likely to be hardware or software? Unlock it and put a new Rom/kernal on? Or try fitting a new screen?
Is there any way to know whether it's software or hardware?
Any experience or suggestions gratefully received
Thanks
What rom are you on? I used to be on custom roms and I noticed phantom touches. It wasn't till I went back to oxygenOS and disabled nav bar completely did I fix this. I found that having a nav bar greatly worsens phantom touches because when you type on the keyboard you tend to touch one of the nav bar buttons.
Also maybe check to make sure you are on the right firmware
Thanks for the reply.
I was on stock, I'm now on lineage. It hasn't fixed it.
The touches are always up the left of the screen... When they happen theyre happening hundreds of times a second, as in its not one touch... The screen becomes in unusable because there's so many touches on the top left of the screen -
It lasts for about a minute, or untill I force restart it...
It's driving me nuts to be honest. I've even taken out apart to see if re-seating the screen would help but it didn't.
Would a custom kernal help?
I don't have any experience with custom kernals. And this problem seems a little different than the one I had which was more a single phantom touch.

It seems the touchscreen of my Desire gets less responsive at random times. Anyone else who has this problem as well?
The touchscreen of the Desire is very sensitive in most cases. But it sometimes (randomly) becomes less responsive. I have to give more pressure for the screen to register the touch. This is especially annoying when typing an e-mail or text message.
But for example: when sliding between the screens at the homescreen (Sense), you have to barely touch the screen to slide. When my 'problem' appears, I can actually feel and slide on the screen but nothing happens. When applying more force it does work, but is not as comfortable...
When I reboot the problem seems to be gone for a while, but at some point it becomes less responsive again.
Obviously I have tried uninstalling apps and widgets and see what happens then. But the problem remains. Hard reset/factory reset appears to be working at first, but again after some time the screen becomes less responsive again. This can be after a few minutes or after a few hours. The only way to 'solve' this is to reboot the phone again.
So! Is there anyone who is experiencing the same problems? Because of the factory reset (and obviously not installing any apps after that reset) it seems to me this is some sort of hardware problem.
Any takes on the issue?
I only get such a problem when my hands are sweaty or sticky and when the screen is smudgy. I'm a cleanliness freak though so I naturally keep my hands and the screen very clean avoiding this problem. Otherwise everything is pretty darn consistent on my side... except for one oddity.
I struggled with this phone for months and then gave up trying to type or even just use the touchscreen while it's laying flat on any surface. Most of the touches just never registered, honestly. Even when applying a lot of pressure. Until last week, quite unexpectedly, the touches started registering perfectly. Just as good as when holding it vertical. I was quite amazed and baffled at how something just changed automatically to improve it significantly. The only other observational change in sync was that some apps that kept changing the phones layout based on the way I'm holding it even when I had disabled this feature (like the Tapatalk XDA app) have started working correctly as set now. Just all of a sudden.
I haven't made any setting or config change. I did root a while back but unrooted very soon after by flashing the stock T-Mobile ROM and things were still as bad as the beginning. That's something like 2 months back.

Ok, weird!
Since I am able to reproduce this with and without installed software (hard reset, no sim, no sd, no nothing) I can only assume it's some sort of hardware problem.
So off to repair department it goes! Thought I'd post it here and perhaps someone would have a solution saying:"Oh! That's this or that". You never know
What I found is sometimes it's unresponsive but it's *puts on black roll neck and jeans* the way that I'm holding it.
I think if you squeeze the phone too much it registers a touch on the side of the screen. Also so times when I'm using it one handed the ball of the bottom of my thumb touches the screen and this is registering, making the rest of the screen unresponsive.
I'd consider this to be the problem first (as annoying as it is). I used to have the 2nd problem on the iPhone, but not the first. It's a bit upsetting but I got over it.

Are you using a screen protector at all?
Since you have the same problem after performing a hard reset, maybe you should consider taking it back to the vendor for a warranty repair or replacement as it could be a faulty digitizer.
hi, had my desire z about a year now, since ive had it, quite rarely ive had a problem of it seeming to have a mind of its own, for example, icons may be selected, or the home screen will slide accross by itself etc. ive always put this down to a trackpad problem.
the other day (after having a miui rom installed for about 2-3 weeks, which was fine untill now), it started acting up strangely, the above problem started happening, but more severe, also the touch screen and softkey buttons would stop working for periods of time (or stop completely untill reset), but screen rotation etc would still be working, which shows that the O/S has not frose and is still working behind the scenes (making me think its a hardware problem).
now, i think ive worked out that this seems to be triggered (mostly) when i open the keyboard. (as also, when the touchscreen stops working etc, sometimes, sliding the keyboard open and close several times, will sometimes seem to unfreeze the touchscreen etc, and will be back to normal, for a while). ive tried doing full wipe and reflashing etc, but i still have the same problems mainly when using the slide out keyboard, which again, makes me think its hardware (possibly keyboard ribbon cable?)
i really dont want to send it off as that means getting it all back to stock etc, and last time i needed the screen replaced, took 6 weeks to get it back!
if anyone could pinpoint the likely source of the problem, id rather replace the part myself..
would anyone have any ideas, as they would be very much appriciated... Thanks...
anyone at all?
I got 2 Zs meanwhile but dont have any problem with the keyboard.
But sometimes when its charging i got the same issues like you - no touch is working and the screens are sliding nearly automatically.
I think this has nothing to do with the keyboard...
Hope this had helped you a bit

thanks for the reply, unfortunately im still no closer to finding source of the problem, its intermittant, happened lots yesterday, not so much today, maybe the digitiser? its like there is another invisible finger touching the screen..
This would happen when i was on stock froyo, like it would cause the home screen to hang, but if i was ion an app it worked fine. I would use it to refresh of sorts when my phone was hung up or i need to reload my apps from sd lol. Sounds weird I know, but even with stock froyo i had problems with my keyboard but with the prerooted GB its as smooth as butter...
still going on, and getting more frequent, i dont think it is to do with the keyboard anymore. im now guessing it is the digitizer, its like someone is pressing an invisible finger on the screen, roughly in the center. it comes and goes, it happens for about 3 days, then goes away for a couple of days etc.
also there is very little info anywhere on the net that can help, including replaceing the digitizer itself
anyone ever replaced one on a disire z/g2?
I've been reading through the previous threads and I'm still confused if the issue is hardware or software related. I have the AUO panel and have broken swipes, and times where I can't scroll properly. This has been going on a couple months now and it's getting on my last nerve since it's frequently happening when I need my phone to work properly. All this time I assumed it was software but a couple threads mentioned it was hardware. Trouble is, some people with the JDI screen also have issues so I don't understand. My question is, has anyone ruled out software by flashing an AOSP rom? I'd rather not send this to Sony if at all possible since they don't cross ship and I'd be without a phone.
I have rarely an issue with the touch screen, when swipe up or down, it doesn't swipe it acts like I've just touched (clicked) once the display. I think it is a software issue, because in my case, if I turn off the display wait for 2-3 seconds and turn it on, it works with no problems.
Can you point me please to other threads that have this issue in discuss?
Thank you!
Have you removed the asf from the screen and placed an actual screen protector on it? I found that this really helped with the weird screen issues.
I have a screen protector over the ASF. But that has nothing to do with my issue, because, like I said, when I turn the display off, wait 3 seconds, and on again everything is working normally.

Yeah, I reboot usually and the issue temporarily goes away. Then it will come back a day or two later. I'm afraid to remove the ASF because I've read some issues with goes touches even with a screen protector. I just want the issue to be fixed... I was thinking of flashing a AOSP rom but wanted to see if anyone with that ROM had any trouble or not. Maybe the L update in January will fix things.
Here are the resources I've read on this issue:

I have rarely that issue, like I said I just turn off the screen, and after 2-3 seconds turn it on and it's gone. I'm sure this is a software related issue.
If it helps at all, I never had the issue in the two weeks I tried an aosp rom. However the camera and battery life were a bit lacking so I'm back on a stock rom.
I haven't have the issue too in the past weeks, I've wiping cache and dalvik cache pretty often , because I've installed some system apps. Anyway I will really want to know the cause of this
L.E. I'm still on stock firmware.
L.E. 2 : The Glove mode function, in the Settings-Display menu has an application or something? Has a file redirected to it? Is there in the phone's system a file than can be edited or deleted or something for the glove mode function? Maybe we will find answers there.
I'm not sure that I've made myself understood with the question.
Hello xda-developers,
as I searched for a long time and didn't find anything useful, i decided to post here on xda for the first time.
My problem is the same as mentioned in this post or in the youtube video:

It is not possible to pull the notification bar down in horizontal mode. In landscape mode, there is no problem. The screen is not reacting in this area, even in ladscape mode -> the navbar is not working in landscape mode.
This problem started a few days ago on Resurrection Remix (Marshmallow 6). After it did start, i flashed back to Stock G3 Rom and it still consisted.
Then the screen worked for a few hours again, thus it thought "Fine, it's working, you can flash back". I flashed to CM13 and it worked fine.
After a half day, it didn't work again. So, thats the normal case: It is working for a few hours and then it is not, for 4 days now.
I don't know what this could be and I wanted to ask you guys, if you have any idea, what to do...
So, I would be very happy, if you could answer my following questions:
1. Is it possible, that it is something with the software? I though, that every time I flash a new ROM the whole software is new and bugs are "away"... If this is true, than my problem can't be a software problem. Especially that I've flashed back to Stock, which does install everything new...
2. If it is not software, could it be hardware? But that's not really logical because it works sometimes. Only thing is a loose connection. But can there be a loose connection, which makes the screen not working only on this smart area of the screen?
3. As I flashed Stock ROM, there was the area thicker, because the notification bar was thicker. This absolutely makes no sense, does it? It seems, that the system says "Oh, thats the area which the notification bar covers, let's deactivate it"
4. Do you have any other ideas what to do?
I'm afraid of sending it in because I think, that it will work, when LG is testing the phone.
Excuse my english, i know that it is not the best:angel:
I hope, you can help me because this is a very ****ty problem...
Thank you in advance and lets discuss about it

I can sometimes get it down from the upper left, but not always. For me it sometimes shows a persistent touch and the top center of the bar until I lock and unlock it again. Its definitely a software issue. Wish somebody would look into this!
Awkward Problem
Hello,
Nice to have an answer even in it is not a good one
I "fixed" the Problem by sending it to LG service. THREE TIMES. It really took 3 times that they found the Problem. Changing the touch panel solved it for me.
Hope everybody with this Problem finds a solution. Good luck
I have a HTC One m8 and the top half inch of the screen does not respond but occasionally it does sometimes for a little while. The top half inch generally tends to work when the battery is charged to 100% but sometimes that doesn't happen either. if it helps I use a tempered glass as a screen protector and the screen does not have any physical damage and it doesn't help when u boot into safe mode. I have also tried a hard reset.
Coincidentally i am working on a phone with the same problem (not mine). After a lot google research the owner decided to use another Launcher (Smart Launcher). This did not fix it entirely, if you are in Apps you can use the statusbar, but its not working on homescreen. I dont know why it behaves like that, but surprisingly many people get problems like that. I tend to believe that there is some software problem involved, because changing Launcher or using custom rom has been reported helpfull/fixing the problem (not allways tho..).
Now he had some other troubles with this phone and in the process i did a reset, that did not fix things as you said. I will install a custom rom next and will report back next week.
So i was wrong with saying a new lauchner solved the problem. Statusbar(sb) was accessible in home screen but not in app, said it wrong in the other comment. Now i had some time to test this and i can say that at least the phone i was working on is broken.
The top part does not recognize any touch input. The reason the sb showed some reactions is, that the launcher had a bigger trigger area (i guess), so you could pull it down. But still the top part was not responding. I tested it with stock, S-Rom and one Nougat Rom (dont remember), none of that showed an input in the top part.
Solution for now is different launcher or app that pulls down the bar. There are still some problems in daily usage, that this will not fix, so i guess its time for a new phone.
I am facing same problem. Is it any update which was pushed by HTC which makes the top 1 inch unresponsive ocassionally.. Indirectly, a marketing gimmick to push us by a new phone. So if it is really like that, who would buy a HTC phone again anticipating same problem again. Might go for Samsung (my own preference). huh !!!
