Display Artefact/ghosting line on lowest brightness

I have a diagonal line that runs along the width of the display it runs at a slight angel, it can be only seen with the display set a its lowest setting and running a black image in a very dark room. I have taken the phone back to three (solihull) who after 3 goes of trying to see it are aware of the problem and acknowledged it. They checked their demo phone which didn't have the problem. They have contacted their Samsung rep who I am awaiting a call from.
Does anyone have a similar problem?

This is normal with AMOLED displays.

the thing is, my GS2 doesnt have this "problem" on the lowest screen brightness.
I compared them last night side by side and its very noticable on my Nexus
That said, i've already accepted the fact that everyone else has some variation of this "issue" but im more curious on what the Samsung rep has to say about it. I'm also curious if its more visible on some devices as opposed to others.
I put my brightness on a static settings so it doenst effect me much (I can see it a bit on dark grey backgrounds) but i'm just imagining people who use auto brightness cause there's NO way you can miss it on whites/greys

you must have a magic Galaxy S II then, because it is a known issue with AMOLED screens when running at low brightness.

honestly, anyone would be able to spot it out if you saw them in person.
Either my GS2 doesnt have the issue, or its VERY hard to see. I took long hard looks because i was really debating if my Nexus was defective - if this is just how it is then im willing to accept it - i just want to make sure we're not part of some funky batch

It may be a known issue, but that doesn't mean it's acceptable. I've not experienced any issues like this on either of my Fascinates. I'd certainly return mine if there were any screen issues.

I understand the artefacts you mean but this is a single bar about 3mm thick its not dead pixels like the three store suggested otherwise it wouldn't matter about the brightness it almost looks like something is pressing gently against the screen. I have tried to photograph it but my camera/me are not the best.

yeah its pretty much like that
it's like...grainy with weird colours. I wouldnt say i see any thick LINES, instead it reminds me of throwing paint on a wall and letting it slide down. I'll try and take a picture tonight with some high res camera so you guys can hopefully see what im talking about
unfortauntely its not so easy for me to get a return since im in canada and i bought mine through Handtec in the UK - im pretty sure RMA-ing is a huge hassle and wait, plus im not sure if i have to pay for the shipping

Its not like that on mine.

lol i took that pic with my G2x, its not as extreme as that in real life.

An OLED (organic light-emitting diode) is a light-emitting diode (LED) in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compounds which emit light in response to an electric current.
It;s Organic. Each row of organic pixels may have slightly different tolerances to voltage than the next, hence you get dark and lighter rows varying to different degrees on different screens.
By all means take a chance and see if a replacement is all the same tolerances with no darker or lighter lines or if it has lots of them and looks like a striped screen. I don't think its a "defect" as such, its just a "characteristic" of AMOLED. If they wanted Samsung could measure the tolerance of each OLED to a very accurate level and there would be no dark or light lines on any screen. It would be very expensive though, so they fall into a catagory of acceptable or not.
Thats just my opinion by the way.
edit: Im actual glad so many others are questioning this too. I feel less pedantic now. lol

Bear in mind that any replacement you get may in fact have a worse screen. I was lucky when I got my replacement phone (replaced due to volume bug, nothing to do with the screen) and my screen was luckily better. You may not be so lucky.

well i just got my nexus today and as expected noticed a small transparant line running down with screen with auto brightness / low brightness. So i turned it of and manualy set to around 55 60% defintly cant notice it now just bummer cant use auto brightness .... will have to see how battery holds out like this as i luv this phone

Screen issues

I've had 2 Oneplus 3's now, and am now in the process of sending the second unit back for a replacement.
This because the screen wasn't functioning properly, there was lightbleed on both and the screen had a green tint on one side and a red tint on the other side.
Has anyone else experienced issues like this? Is it a known problem, big or small? Or am I just in really bad luck by recieving a bad screen 2 times in a row.

No issue here. Wish the screen was brighter but at least its the same as my g4

The problems you're describing are physically impossible on a Super AMOLED display... and to say that it has happened to both OP3s you received is just as absurd. The pre-applied screen protector is pretty crappy, but I mean c'mon... Are you one of those guys who returns things with the smallest imperfections, or perceived imperfections in this case?

Woah there, I have no idea how it is possible to have the problems I have, I know that with lcd sometimes the glue causes the device to be lit unevenly, don't know if that could be the case, but it seemed a little off. I tested this using this video on full brightness: https://youtu.be/vu0mQa2EpS4
While going from. Grey to black, the pixels should all turn of at the same time, or at least, that's how I think it should be on amoled. But this wasn't the case on both devices.
As for the different tint problem, that does bother me a lot more, reading Web with a changing color if you read from left to right isn't that good for the eyes or at least It bothered me.

Here are some pictures, it's quite difficult to recreate on camera like I see them but this gives a general idea of what my issues were with the first device. The first being the screen tint, on the left of the screen it seems to be more red and on the right more green, while this is a Grey background at about 50% brightness. The second is how the screen is unevenly lit while on a solid Grey low brightness background.

I just watched that LCD test video and firstly my eyes hurt from the bright white light secondly I am quite picky and having come from the g4 which I thought had a great screen (few bleed issues though) I am quite happy. I couldn't see anything at all on my unit like you have so maybe it's device specific?
I have noticed this weird thing though and it's when I use MX player pro to watch films. I have been watching the dark night for like the 20th time on th op3 but do notice the skin tones look a little warm and when i increase brightness it gets worst. I think this is a combination of the pentile display and the AMOLED screen with a lower resolution than we would like. I am sure I remember my galaxy note 3 and wife's s5 looking like this also but could be wrong.
Overall it is strange using g4 then using op3 it's hard to explain but they are just different not just LCD / AMOLED but the calibration also. Love the blacks though it's like the phone is off when the screen goes dark. Nice.

So the screen turned black fully at the same time, well there's a logo on screen, but apart from that all black?
I know what you mean by that, I think thats in all screens, not sure, but I had it in both screens but also the problems occurred on them too, maybe that's a feature, I at least won't mind at night when the screen is that low and a bit more warm toned. I saw it on a selfie I got on whatsapp, at night when I got it, I saw her face normal, but when I set the screen brighter, I also saw that the photo also had a background! which was invisible and dark on the lowest brightness.

Smallest imperfection? He uses the screen all the time and notices that all the time, how is that small imperfection? Also amoled screens are known for the issues he described. All screens have that issue. Just people like you are not good enough to notice it while others notice it easily.

This logo, not that important, but YouTube shows it really need to turn that off sometime.

Green tint on dark background low brightness

Man I hate OLED lottery.

I have the same effect in original Youtube app. It is just a bad background gradient in the application. Don´t blame the phone....
When I open Messenger with black background and grey status bar at the top of the app in the same brightness level, there is no greenish effect.

I am also having uniformity issues. Very noticeable, unfortunately. As there are no 512GB Ultras available anyway ATM, O will just have to live with it for the moment. Maybe I get used to it...

mm weird, I see it in every single app with dark grey background, even in settings (w/Dark mode on), the bleeding is a lot bigger from the top right corner.
EDIT: Just checked the messenger app (FB messenger) and background is completely black so most pixels are off except for the letters and gray search bar but bleeding wouldn't be noticeable.

I've just checked it with Gmail since it is also a Google application and you can notice the bleed when the lights in the room are turned on and I try to cover the top of the phone to see it. After turning the lights off, whole app is equally gray so in my opinion it is just an optical illusion. If I recall well the AMOLED displays use some kind of dimming (tinkering with the frequency) in order to reach a lower point of the brightness that is not noticeable for human eye. Probably this can be seen when covering a gray part of Google apps in a room that has another not so bright light source.

I made a picture. It is showing a 5% gray test pic and supposed to be uniform. It is easy to see and I was kind of shocked when instantly noticing it the first time I was using it in the dark. Settings and many parts of the dark one UI are using grays in that range.
Anybody else? If it is rare, it will be worth pushing for an exchange.

I did the same test, I'm attaching a picture of my Note 10+ and the S20 Ultra side by side. Uniformity seems a lot better on the note 10+, however on white background the Note 10+ turns more red when I slightly tilt it while the S20 Ultra seems to shift colors a lot less and still white overall.
Still not sure if it's worth the hassle to return.

Could you please check, if is different at 60Hz? For me, it is clearly different.

Oh wow, you're right! I set it to 60 hz and QHD+ and uniformity on the gray test got noticeable better, still some green on top right corner and around the punch hole but noticeable less. I love reaaally 120 hz during normal use though.

Thanks for confirming, same here. I wonder, if this is something, that can be fixed in software... And if the rumoured 'dynamic refresh raze' update might change things.
Could please note people check their Ultras displays?

I am using smiled displays since Symbian Nokias, never had one, where I noticed it so much.

In some cases they were normal during the first days but the problem evolved until the display was unsusable in low light conditions, hope the same won't happen to our phone during the next weeks.

yeah I don`t have this issue I did the screen test in Gmail and download the app that does all the different colors including gray, at the lowest brightness and at other levels of brightness at 120hz its all uniform.

Mine is most noticeable at around 35-40% brightness and with 120 hz but still noticeable with 60 hz while on the note 10+ I can't see any green at all at any level of brightness. I think it's a quality issue and variation of OLED screens but not sure if it would count as "defective". Samsung doesn't do exchanges so it would be a pain to return everything and recorder without the promotions and reservation/pre-order credits. Ugh not sure what to do yet.
EDIT: Btw I tested with gmail and didn't notice the green in the app since it's light gray but as soon as I drop down the notification panel (w/dark mode on) the green is immediately noticeable. It's only with very dark gray that lookd almost black which is what Samsung use for all their apps (settings, calculator, messages, etc.) when dark mode is on. I wish they used true black so pixels were completely off like with facebook messenger.

I am also unsure what to do. I have to say, however, that this is the device that gives me the most uncertainty ever. For this opportunity price I want a good to perfect display. @vwite Don't you think that the dark grays are too bright as well? It wouldn't be so visible otherwhise. I also sent my picture to the 'write the CEO' address and a pledge to be aware of the issue:

Actually I ordered an S20+ now and will most likely just give the Ultra back in the first 2 weeks. Yes, it is a pain, but I really can not stand the screen as is. I am even putting it in its box before I have the plus and using my S10+ in the meantime - the green tint is driving me a little nuts.
I am having a hard time justifying the thickness and weight for a feature I hardly use (amazing zoom) while having an inferior main camera at the same time (focus issues).

i noticed this issue too on my 20+
it seems to be worse some days less bad other days
it also is very dependable on how much ambient light is around - eg is much more noticeable in dark rooms
and yes is an issue with Samsung dark mode that isn't true black but some dark greyish
other then this - all other colours look amazing = so not sure if the screen itself is defective
I do hope there will be a software update that will fix this or make it less visible

Screen Problem

Hello, I've noticed that when I use my phone in night mode I can see green areas on the screen. Are there other people in my case?

No on mine so far. Black is black no greenish.

is see this too sometimes esp at night when its dark in the room with no other lights - in the day when its brighter is not visible
it does seem to be an issue with some backgrounds as i noticed in apps where the background is black (not dark grey or greysh) this isnt visible
so not sure whats going on - but i didnt had this issue with the s10 .....

Yes, I have the same problem, it comes from the screen according to what I read on some forums. Some OLED screen have problems. I think I'm going to get it exchanged.

no issues so far with mine s20+ (exynos variant), however if i were you i would seek to get replacement

the best place to test is in the samsung daily or SMS app - the top part of the app thats meant to be black was sometimes showing more like greyish - now is proper black again?
like i said it seems to be dependent on the ambient light - i wouldnt want to replace the phone if its not an actual issue esp since it took me a whole day to get my stuff transferred and setup

Oled is known for reduced quality the lower brightness you go.
But all units will have varied levels of tints etc

Unfortunately, yes. Also, it is more noticeable at 120Hz.

It is rather horrible and i noticed it right away the first time I used it in the dark. I think it can not really be fixed in Software, but it can be probably made less noticeable, as 120Hz is making it worse.

Had this on my S9+ and S10. Nothing can be done about it.

Using OLED since 2010. Starting with Symbian Nokias, Windows Phone Nokias and switching over with the S8+ - OLED only.
I suppose - never had a display that bad in this regard. At least never noticed it that bad right away. The upper right corner is almost always showing a green tint.
But I am glad, if it is not too widespread - then the S20+ I ordered will probably be fine.

Report it to Samsung, probably get it exchanged, if possible and it really bugs you.
I gave back the ultra because it was too much green tint. The plus has it as well, not as bad as the ultra.

Bottom right corner is way darker and reddish.

Question Do I need to return my f3 because of the screen?

So I finally got my f3, it has been perfect in every aspect, even the screen looks good, but the eye fatigue is simply too much.
I have tried to reduce DPI to minimum, reduce brightness, use reading + paper mode. After these changes it did get noticeably better, but it is still annoying.
I have Samsung galaxy s5 that also has an amoled display, but I don't get the same issue there. Also regular laptop and computer monitors are fine.
So anything to do on the software side to make it better? If not, then what other similar phone would you recommend that has a different screen.

Have you tried enabling DC dimming? For some people (not everyone) the PWM flickering causes some discomfort. I can't see any difference, but I'm glad the option is there.

F3 does not have DC dimming.

The option is there on custom roms, I assumed it was available on stock as well.

Do you know why you have eye fatique? What's the problem?

The text and screen looks somehow muddy compared to LCD screen. Text is not as sharp, or at least eyes feel so, and it is harder to focus to text and objects.
Yes, the screen looks impressive, but can't really use it.

LCD screens are always sharper than their OLED counterparts, but hey there might be a slight problem with your eyes or maybe you've got sensitive eyes. therefore, I can only suggest that you get an LCD device or test an oled before buying. btw I have no problem with the panel even though I prefer LCD panels (no burn in issues in LCDs etc.).
there is still one small thing that I have noticed, there a very slight white line/shadow under the black text and it's more noticeable when the text is bigger like when Im in settings, all the titles or texts seem to have that white shadow under them. Has any of you noticed that? I might make a thread for it later but I just dont care. the screen is waaaay better than my last OLED which was ROG phone 2 with red tint and huge bandings and awful black crush issues...

LCD screens are always sharper than their OLED counterparts, but hey there might be a slight problem with your eyes or maybe you've got sensitive eyes. therefore, I can only suggest that you get an LCD device or test an oled before buying. btw I have no problem with the panel even though I prefer LCD panels (no burn in issues in LCDs etc.).
there is still one small thing that I have noticed, there a very slight white line/shadow under the black text and it's more noticeable when the text is bigger like when Im in settings, all the titles or texts seem to have that white shadow under them. Has any of you noticed that? I might make a thread for it later but I just dont care. the screen is waaaay better than my last OLED which was ROG phone 2 with red tint and huge bandings and awful black crush issues...

I personally use Syberia and have no problems with shadows under text.
Thankfully, I don't have eye strain.

Never had a problem on my end you might want to bust some glasses
