I've out of the XDA/Android world for a while. But I remember that 80+% of the roms had nasty bugs, esp. w the camera, calling, etc. pretty basic usability stuff.
After trying basicly every rom out there, i went back to the Indian Zui. I,m on 2.5.104 Nougat while upgrading twice from 1.9 and relocking the bootloader.
While stock zui doesn't quite get close to Antutu scores on custom roms (i get roughly 130k) all other aspects are miles better. U-touch, camera, fingerprint, everything works beautifully. I get about 6 hours of SOT every time. And it's super stable with Google services working great, opposed to the chinese roms.
Zui grows on you after a while and i will not go back to any other rom. I also own a Z1 and it's also running Zui 2.3 better or the same as CM that it came with. Everything just works and if nothing else, i want a working u-touch, which never works like it should on custom roms. Camera is a disaster on most custom roms. Since Z2 doesn't really have a superb camera, it's really bad on custom roms. So there you go - my personal opinion.

I agree with you.
I respect Dev's efforts and time to build and test roms which work for majority of the consumer's.
But personally i am also back to stock indian zui.
Maybe because I need a firmware I can trust to perform everytime.
I get around 7-8 (sometime 9) hours sot. I don't use volte as I am on Airtel carrier. Using non root greenify for manual hibernation.
Personally I don't feel any lag or stutter on stock ROM too.
I don't demand any cool features in a rom.
All i need is 1. good camera ( photos without noise)
2.Manageable in call volume ( which is currently the issue in viperos) *again no offence to the Dev or his work , viperos is a good rom
3. Sure shot quick gps lock ( i depend on Google maps alot)
4. Better battery and Ram management.
For now I am sticking with stock.
I would also go for stock for the same reasons (at least on my girls phone) but I am experiencing heat issues. Custom kernels don't seems to be working for the stock rom, are they?
I am currently on AEX with DarkMoon kernel and it seems to be working well. Haven't tried camera yet though.
You guys don't have heat issues on the stock??
Many users have been complaining that after ugrading OTA to stock Indian Nougat the performance decreases significantly and phone lags. The result is Antutu of about 110k or in some cases even down to 90k.
I had a similar experience with barely 110k which is on paar with SD 660. The second time I went back to stock I did a factory reset right after upgrading to Nougat. Now it's back to 130k and there is no lagging.

Qfil original Chinese stock 1.9 which relocks the bootloader and puts the phone to "virgin" state. And after that also Qfil Indian 2.0. After that it OTA's twice to Indian Nougat 2.5.104ST.
Deodexed bootlooped my phone to the extent I had to use deep flash cable. I saw a Zuk logo for a second then it rebooted over and over again.
I would be careful with that

Nothing of such on my unit. It never freezed on any rom. I have a Chinese unit though.
If that happens it could be hardware issue. Is it happening on different roms?

I got that when trying the Chinese deodexed. Fixed it by unlocking the boot loader again. That's all needed to fix the boot loop.
Now on Indian deodexed. I will test for a few days. Battery seems to drain faster than AEX. Let's see.
What's the biggest downside you experienced of using a custom rom on your Z2?

Camera definitely plus no working u-touch on most roms.
Bluetooth, fingerprint and hotspot can also be problematic. Battery is better on some roms, performance is also waay better.
I mean on most of the custom roms, eveything just flies. No delay or lag, just like using nitro in nfs)
In that aspect, it's a different phone alltogether.
But i cannot live with the camera quality.
Otherwise DU, RR AICP, Discovery, Mokee.....awesome roms.
Help me please.
Hi! Currently I am using latest AEX. Battery life is good. But camera and utouch quality is very poor. Regretting to leave stock Indian rom. Can you please guide me step by step and give me the download link to restore back to my stock Indian rom with a fresh virgin start. I don't have any issues to delete all my internal storage data. All I need the stock rom with factory state. Where I can update it over OTA. No unlocked bootloader no custom recovery, nothing.
Thanks in advance mate.

Hi mate. There u go
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
The procedure is as follows
1) Use windows x64, install adb drivers, zuk drivers 1.0X QC drivers and Qfil
2) Enable usb debugging in developer options on your current rom
3) put the phone to edl with "adb reboot edl" or with hardware buttons
4) download the chinese 1.9 rom and unpack it
5) run qfil which should detect your phone as Qualcomn Qloader 9008
6) Select Flat build, search for firehose and raw from the folder of 1.9 rom
7) Select download and it should flash
8) if successfull go through the initial chinese setup and enable usb debugging
9) repeat the above steps flashing indian stock rom in the link
10) if successfull the phone will boot up in stock indian rom, do 2 OTA's and you have indian Nougat 2.5.104ST, bootloader locked. Then do a factory reset and you're done
I did this a couple of times on 3 z2's. The issues are limited to drivers not being installed, usb port issues and usb cable issues. In most cases the problem is a phone not being recognized or putting the phone to edl mode.
If you do the steps correctly, it will work.
I just got this ota update. Should I update it?
Is there any bugs?
Anyone else got the update?
Is it oreo based?
Sent from my RN5P
It is a downgrade from Oreo to Nougat.
Because the last Oreo update had several major bugs..
Just the fixes we wanted. Disabled 2x zoom on portrait mode, headphones output now much louder etc.
Well Xiaomi surprises us in various ways..
Did anyone update
I mean is it worth the the data for someone who is still in 9.2.7

OK
Flashed it. Over 8.5.10 - there was a black Screen with Telephone reset after booting. When I click it im coming into trwp again. Tried with and without lazyflasher. Füll wipe in both cases
I'm using its smooth fast with lots of improvements but having a single bug which I faced, slow-motion & timelapse are not working properly.

Using it! Overall smooth performance. Many bugs fixes came along this update like camera portrait mode zoom fix. But custom theme and font resetting randomly after reboot is not fixed yet. Getting a lot better battery backup than 9.2.7.0. Update to this version without hesitating.
Should I update if I'm on 9.5.11?

I was on Nougat and updated, havn't found any issues with it yet. No idea what's going on with so many bug reports.
Now, for such a big Firm, this is embarrassing and shameful! Seems to me that they can't decide to go or not to go on global market! Unbelievable!

Me too. I had Oreo straight out the box and got the downgrade notification and it failed.
This Oreo version isn't bad, the only thing I'm really miffed with is hotspot not working.
If that was working don't see too much of an issue staying on Oreo tbh

How is the audio clarity and quality when compared to the stock ROM? I have stopped flashing any custom ROMs - be it Oreo or Pie just because of this issue. Also, could you please share the full camera version that you are currently using - is that without the Portrait mode? Also, how much screen-on time are you getting?
Hello there... this post got my interest too. I have jumped back and forth between stock and custom. It is sad "for me" that it seems most devs have given up on supporting / maintaining Oreo 8.1. Everyone is trying to iron out the bugs in a Pie custom... however, I simply want the stability to be there... especially with the camera features and battery life. I am not a gamer either, btw. With all of that said, I have a question or two please.
1. Why did you quote using an older version of Magisk? Is there a compatibility thing that I should be aware of?
2. With the Gcam mod you referenced, does stability work smoothly while recording video? I have found that in many custom builds the stability mode can be jerky and no too smooth.
TIA
Well here I am just giving muy very own personal opinión on the Best Custom Experience I have with Oreo 810 cuz roms and apps.....list is as follows:
TWRP 3210 Advanced Wipe and Select everything except of course External Sd Card...erease everything including internal Storage..we want dead that also....then select FORMAT DATA...to make sure everything is gone....
install Lineage 15.1 July Build.
OpenGapps 810 64 bits nano.
Restart and Initiate Oreo basic setup.
Install Magisk Manager APK restart to Recovery.
Install Magisk 16 Stable restart into Oreo make sure Magisk Manager does recognize Magisk 16.
Click on Vaerify Safety Net click on dowload script and validaty...it will give fail...restart to recovery.
Flash universal-safetynet-fix-v2-beta-5-magisk-v14.zip this is the one FUNCTIONING 100% TESTED BY MYSELF....restart into Oreo now.
Now if you do have corruptable App like titanium Backup install those apps and run any Backup.
Finally flash Alizee Kernel v14 for Non Treble.
For camera I have Arnova Mod test any u want works for me v6 latest Stable.
Below you can attachements as proof. Thanks!

As Motorola will most probably release the kernel sources/source code for our device short after the Oreo OTA it will help the developers a lot to fix all this device related bugs. So yes, it makes sense to wait for it.

I went through several custom ROMs and ended at Android 10 crDroid. Even though most custom ROM devs now switched to Android 11 (R) development, from my experience the R ROMs are still too new and too buggy for daily use. A custom ROM probably won't help you save much battery, but for RAM management, you'll see massive improvements given how terrible it is on stock.

I used Android 10 crDroid. More than often the bottom navigation bar became unresponsive. Real show stopper for me.
What's the situation now? I realised that the phone is no longer getting security updates which is not great. I haven't flashed custom in years, but I remember it was a bother to get banking apps working. Is it still a problem? What's the most reliable and secure custom out there?

Almost all of the custom ROM available for Mi A2 lite is very stable and bugless. Ram management was never a problem in custom ROMs and battery life provided by customs is very near to stock ROM ( keep in mind the battery is very old).
Banking apps should work fine. But it also depends upon the app itself. You can pass safety net and app requiring only safety net should work fine.

There isn't a "best", your experience will determine which is the best for you. I have tried POSP, arrow, crDroid 7 and all of them are very stable and up-to-date. They differ only in customizations and such. Search what do you want and see the specific features of each ROM.
Battery life and stability cannot be compared across users and different ROMs. You can choose any one of the ROMs, all of then are very good for daily usage.
