question about unlocked status/flashing ability - Samsung Galaxy S9 Questions & Answers

I'm looking to get an s9+, i know verizon will have theirs locked down
i see an "unlocked" version on amazon
SM-G965U1 is the model
is this just carrier unlocked or boot loader unlocked? can i flash kernel and custom roms with this model? if not, which model that will work with vzw should i get that can do that?
Thanks!!

You can only flash custom roms on the exynos models. Not sure how well they work on verizon

Yes, you can flash International ROMs on the AT&T model. Of course, you need to unlock the bootloader and install a custom recovery first.
Do AT&T M8s automatically come factory unlocked? I'm with AT&T but am waiting on delivery for an International unlocked from Amazon, thinking it would be more versatile. Is the only difference then the branding and AT&T bloatware?

ROM/RUU compatibility between different variants

I have a Verizon variant. I'm running LeeDroid atm. When installing LeeDroid you can select your variant. I was wondering if you can select US unlocked and essentially operate the Verizon variant as an unlocked variant? I know the Verizon m8 was compatible with at least T-Mobile ROMs and I'm pretty sure the VZ 10 is the same hardware as the unlocked model.
My other question is can you flash a RUU from the unlocked model to a Verizon variant?
I've been away from htc for a while so I'm trying to see how everything works nowadays. I don't want to corrupt my current rom or brick my phone. I've been on Motorola where there's one rom that works for every carrier. Thanks!

I would check the MID of the device and compare it with the firmware. For example, I have a tmobile htc10, but the MID is the exact same as the us unlocked MID, so i flashed the unlocked US firmwares with no problem. If the MID (model id) does not match, I would not recommend trying it. But i could be wrong. But you will also need to change the CID to match the firmware, which isnt the issue really. Changing the CID is very easy. Now, as for selecting the carrier during a rom install, all that does is add some values to build.prop to match the carrier and maybe some specific APN settings for that carrier. Good luck.

Do all S9s with model SM-G9600 have the bootloader unlocked?

I am thinking of buying an S9, I read that the SM-G9600 with Snapdragon had the bootloader unlocked, but before I purchase I want to be 100% that all phones with that number have the bootloader unlocked and not just ones from specific regions. I've seen a few on eBay with that model number, but I only want the phone if I can install Lineage on it.
Also if anyone can share their experiences with a LineageOS custom ROM for S9, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks
Certain models have unlocked bootloaders, certain models don't, you do not get the same model with locked and unlocked bootloaders
But if you're looking for custom ROMs, why not buy the Exynos instead?
I know some models don't have unlocked bootloader, but I am asking about SM-G9600 specifically, I want to buy one off eBay, but they say Factory Unlocked and don't clarify if they mean the bootloader or only the SIM. I am interested in running some emulators that don't run well on Exynos devices, only Snapdragon.

Factory unlocked would mean it's carrier unlocked not the bootloader.

Yes, but this article https://www.xda-developers.com/snapdragon-samsung-galaxy-s9-lineageos-15-1/, says SM-G9600 have unlockable bootloaders, though it mentions that it's from Latin America, I just want clarification whether all SM-G9600 are unlocked or only those sold in Latin America.

That's what I'm saying, it's the model that is unlocked or not, not the region, matters not where you buy it, it only matters which model you buy
All US snapdragon models are locked, a couple of Chinese Snapdragon models are unlocked, that is one of them iirc
All the Exynos are unlocked
Development-wise, no point going for a Snapdragon if you're looking to play about with custom stuff, buy Exynos, for the sake of an emulator?
Enough of this nonsense!
Yes, the SM-G9600/SM-G9650 (Latin America / China version with the Snapdragon processor) are all bootloader unlocked. You absolutely will need to root and flash support files for your carrier to get VoLTE (2G and 3G fallback will not be available from carriers soon as they're all shutting down their old 2G/3G networks) and possibly WiFi calling to work. If you don't already know, you will trip the Knox hardware e-fuse and the void the phone's warranty by modifying the stock ROM. This will also mean the phone will permanently lose access to things like Knox features and Samsung Pay, so do some reading.

TMO-Note 10 + 5G {Just to confirm}

I have the TMO variant and it will be sim unlocked this friday.
I am sure everyone will tell me the info is somewhere, but i have to ask.
Will that enable the OEM flashing or is this a tmobile thing again?
The bootloader is locked in the US Snapdragon model Samsung phones.
You can use any SIM card after network unlock.
You can also flash any compatible ROMs using ODIN. These will be factory images from Samsung. Since this is an exclusive T-mobile device I don't think there are any ROMs for it

Question Flashing Unlocked Firmware on AT&T version

I have AT&T Pixel 6 Pro which is SIM unlocked and I have already unlocked the bootloader. Can I flash unlocked Pixel 6 pro firmware (factory image) on it instead of AT&T factory images?
There are different carrier specific firmwares released for a reason

What happens if we flash unlocked? I know there could be a reason, but could we possibly brick if we flash unlocked on AT&T?

There are only two versions of the latest firmware. Verizon, and non-Verizon. So yes, you should be able to flash the non-Verizon firmware fine. Probably no different from what you're on unless you haven't received the OTA to SD1A.210817.036 yet.
Even those with unlocked phones running on the Verizon network are fine to flash either version. Eventually, there will be only one firmware per month, just like they have for other Pixels.
I could probably flash my unlocked phone that I'm using on AT&T with the Verizon firmware and it would probably still be okay.
If you brick your phone, it's not because of which Raven (P6P) firmware you flash.
