Review of Audio Technica ATH-IM02 in-ear monitors w/lots of pics!!!

This is pretty impressive. Detachable cables are a big plus! I wish they had bi-flange tips though,
I think I might actually go for this one... just one query: I know it's probably a wrong comparison to do because of the formats; but how do they compare, sound quality and feel wise, in your experience, with the ATH-M50?

You can buy eartips for a few bucks
M50 and IM02 are in two different worlds, not even apples and oranges lol!!! M50 is over ear dynamic drivers with warm bassy sound, decent clarity, and not much of a transparency (detailed separation of different instruments). Those are my favorite listening headphones on laptop when I watch YT channels or just background listening; very good build and easy to take on/off or use in Dj-style with one earcup. But they are NOT audiophile quality headphones. IM02 are very analytical and detailed. If you were looking for Etymotic as your original choice, M50 is not for you. Btw, Audio Technica also released ATH-IM50 and IM70 dual dynamic driver in-ears but only available in Japan. That IM50 is more on par with M50 in terms of very strong bass, but you are not going to get the same level of details and instrument separation as you get with balanced armature drivers of IM02.

Different beasts I had IM02 as a review loaner for a very short time awhile ago, so can only go by memory. Their soundstage was comparable, nothing out of this world, above average. In terms of details, I want to say that IM02 was more analytical versus UE900 being more balanced with a better bass quantity and smoother upper mids/treble (though a bit peaky as well). IM02 is in category of Etymotic and Zero Audio Doppios where you have brutally honest details which can also get borderline sibilant. UE900 and W40 are smoother and more forgiving, better for enjoyable non-fatigue listening. BUT in my book the king of all reviewed IEMs (from my list) is indisputably ATH-IM03. You get the ear-friendly details and da bass!!!

No, didn't get. I don't think AT is pushing IM01 and IM04 too much and I haven't seen too much discussions about it on Head-fi. If you want a comprehensive comparison, you need to check out earfonia thread: http://www.head-fi.org/t/705687/rev...-ath-im02-ath-im03-ath-im04-ath-im50-ath-im70
I think with IM04 price going up, you might be dealing with diminishing returns but for sure it might be more refined. I only tested IM02 and IM03, where found IM03 to be more suited for my preferred sound sig (with lunashops silver-plated upgrade cable). IM02 is more analytical/details, while IM03 has more bass impact and smoother at the top.
Btw, waiting to receive CKR9 and CKR10 review samples in the next few weeks. AT US is finally going to carry these, and I heard only great things about it! Dual dynamic driver in push-pull config, can't go wrong with that

I think the IM02 that you returned, was sent to me. haha I recognized those markings on the filter. anyway, was it easy to get a sample from beyerdynamic? I been asking them so far no luck.

Great review, thanks. One thing I'm wondering for you or anyone who owns these or an older version is how well they stay in-ear. I've been hearing these are great budget headphones and your review attests to that fact, but I'm always in the market for a good pair of earbuds that have good sound quality, not TOO expensive, and stay in my ears when running/exercising. Any guess on how they'd hold up in that respect?

For running/exercising you will need something more durable with in-ear stabilizers. Otherwise, you need to use Comply Foam tips. They will be wedged in your ears and create a perfect seal which enhances the bass.

No microphonics effect with these headphones.

I have these but I can't find a pair of comfy eartips. I tried them all that was included, and the ones that came with my Xperia Z ultra. And I ended up taking the old eartips from my Sony MW600 bluetooth headset. Still I'm not fully satisfied..I get the feeling that they are not getting squeezed in there like they should. Its like I can still hear outside noise from the street and people talking and cars driving by.
These pair of in-ears might not be right right for my ears so I ordered the "TTPOD T1E". Hopefully they might fit my ears and isolate outside noise better.
But other than that the sound is outstanding for the price I paid for these!

I just bought this today. it sounds amazing, but you need to use the right eartips that fits your ears, i found this troublesome for me at first, because with the wrong eartips, you wouldn't like how it sounds.
I also have SM MP21 [so now i own two SoundMagic products ], the sound quality of E10S is way better and accurate. The bass is not overwhelming like MP21, it's just right. The MP21 have higher sensitivity than E10 & E10S, so with the same volume MP21 will sound louder. For ergonomics, i feel that MP21 is more comfort in my ear than E10S.
E10S is an amazing product for the price, i hope it will sound better after break in.
I also tried the older E10 and E30 at the store, i think there's a difference between E10 and E10S, i feel the bass is louder on E10, E10S overall sounds smoother. E30 i don't like the way you have to attach them to your ears, the sound of E30 is more similiar with MP21 but with more controlled bass. E10 & E10S sound brighter and detailed, you could say that they are airy.
I could be wrong with E10 and E30, because i'm testing them at the shop i bought the 10S, i don't have lots of time to tinker with them and the shop surrounding is noisy.

Bass is ok, but not the strongest. Staying in your ears will depend on eartip fitment. But, these are definitely not a basshead headphones.

I have the e10m and I'm using them with the g3 they sounds really great beyond the price also it has very quality aluminum earpiece design.. But unfortunately i can't say the same for the cables and control unit they both very poor quality cheap plastik you have to take care of it so gentle.
It damages so quickly and easily, i start to use them since almost 1 month ago in the gym and now controls doesn't work anymore but, there is more it randomly turns down the volume or does the opposite it turns up all the way up on its own and blow your earphones of course your ears too.. Also sometimes it activates the stupid google search and stops the music.
As you can image it's so much annoying you want to throw them away when these things happens. Other than that they sounds really awesome the bass is solid and it doesn't really overcome the mids and highs.
I'm open to earphone advices btw, which is kind of the e10. Basses can be even more powerful i don't care but it shouldn't be less than e10's i'm a little bass head i think.
Note: Sorry for the possible grammar fails and corrupt sentences I'm not using this language often.

Hey i have updates a few months ago the earphone jack just broke.. So i had to change it and i did but, im not happy with the sounds quality anymore it can be psychological or a real thing i dont know anyways...
Now I'm thinking to give a try the new Piston 3.0.

i'm getting a factory replacement.
So, i'll see how this Chinese quality earphones hold up...

I believe in specs though.
Xiaomi has a frequency range of 20-20k, where as the sony ones have 5-25k.
I prefer an all round sound signature than bass heavy ones like xiaomi piston 3.
I heard the xiaomi p3 have good knowles mic, is it good??

The human ear cant listen more than 20/21k.
You hve the xiaomi hybrid pistons, doesnt have so much bass as piston 3 and have hi-fi audio. Good choice.

You are right, 'cannot hear above 20k but below 20 i.e. 5-20hz there is an ambiance in those lows, though you cannot hear below 20hz there is kind of a bass reflex effect when the earphone gives sounds of 5-20hz. Thats what i want , ambient lows with good mic !!
Over the years i have learned that pounding bass only gives you headache and you wont be able to listen the song though it is your favorite .
I have used the Sony MDR-EX110LP/B for like 2 years now. And I'm very happy with it.
I'm looking for something that has similar sound signature as Sony MDR-EX110LP/B with bigger diver units, min 11mm, 5-25k hz freq respn. and a good mic.
So is xiaomi piston 3 better than sony ex250ap ?? OR
Do you have any better suggestions upon my above observation ??

Hi, I was reading what you guys said and I don't think specs will be good enough to tell whether a pair of earphones are good or not. I have experience with this because I have listened to a lot of headphones and earphones. Most of the time people go for thumping bass, monster, beats esque branded products. These earphones/headphones do not provide good sound quality. Instead they deliver only bass. Lots of it.
Whether a person likes a headphone/earphone is completely subjective. It depends on his/her taste in music i.e. what kind of music he/she listens to and the sound signature he/she prefers.
If you like pop or hip-hop or electronic music then you should go for what is known as a v-shaped headphone/earphone. V-shaped headphones/earphones have a boosted bass and a higher treble, which is good for these genres.
If you like vocal music then you should go for what is known as a mid-centric headphone/earphone. These type of headphones/earphones have boosted mids which give focus to the vocals in the tracks that you listen to.
If you like rock and other genres involving lots of guitars, I'd recommend you to get a pair of bright headphones/earphones. These will put focus on the instruments, especially the guitars and the vocals for a better rock music experience.
Assuming that you are preferring a v-shaped earphone/headphone then these are my suggestions:
1.Philips SHE-3590
2.SoundMagic ES-18
3.JVC HA-FR301
4.VSonic VSD3
Also I'd recommend Xiaomi Pistons, but there are a lot of fakes of this one running around and most of them look very similar to the genuine ones, so it's difficult to spot the fakes.

Couldn't agree more. Buy your earphones based on what music you love. No two pare of earphones are the same even if the specs are listed at the same there all diffrent and with a sound personal to the earphones your looking at.
If your into good sounding stuff its well worth spending money on a good set brings your most liked songs to life!
Im a bit of a bass lover really and for IEM's i use a pare of Sennheiser ie80s which i love.
For over head i use a Cayin C5 AMP and a pare of J.V.C HA-SZ2000's but i love bass so they do the job for me.

Ahh yeah i've had a pare of them myself in the past there not bad at all for entry level earphones there weighed towards bass more then anything and yeah very V-shaped.
I find that after a while i always want more spent too much on earphones/headphones and amps but to me its worth it.
If you like bass and have the spare cash some SZ2K's are just amazing with a amp of course costs the best part of £300 quid for the set up though but the bass is simply mind blowing these cans shake your whole head!

What headphones should i buy?

Im still using my old iphone earpods but unfortunately the volume remote doesnt work on android so i wish to get something similar but with a better quality to fully enjoy the improved dac and chipset. Searching online i found the sennheiser momentum in-ear which has the remote and mic that i want. What do you think? are there any better ones for that price or even less?

I think the sennheiser momentum in ears are an excellent choice. Everything depends on your budget and needs. I've headphones and earphones that cost multiple hundreds of dollars and off course I'd reccomend some of those (for example: grado PS500's) but if you're on a budget, even sennheiser hd202's or sennheiser cx 1.0 or 3.0's are excellent choices.

I don't have this phone yet (waiting to see how the different issues evolve) but would love to test my 1more Triple Drivers out with this dac. Impressive IEMs for the price (on LGG4 now with Viper4android - mostly FLACs). Check out the reviews online.

Bose or jbl will have great experience bro

And what music do you listen to?

Hard to really recommend something since everyone hears differently. What might sound good to one might sound horrible to another. For general recommendations try similarly priced buds from (in no particular order) Hifiman RE400a, Dunu 22M, Sony XBA H1/H2, RHA MA750, Philips Fidelio S1/S2/TX2, Xiaomi Piston 2, 1More Triple Driver, FiiO EX1, Shure SE215, Onkyo E700, Brainwavz (many models), Audio-Technica ATH-CKM500.
Out of those I mentioned I'd say I liked (also in no particular order since it's from memory) the Sony Momentum In ears, 1More Triple Driver, Shure SE215, Onkyo E700, Xiaomi Piston 2, Hifiman RE400a.
Try to buy somewhere that has an awesome return policy like Amazon so you can try some out and find the one for you.

I want to spend max 100€ and i usually listen to Dubstep/EDM/Trap

Try to listen to Shure SE215,also has a changeable cable. Has extended bass and laid back highs.

Go for the KZ ED10 earphones. They are only 10 bucks on amazon and they are amazing. I've owned, the Sennheiser Momentum in ear, Shure SE215, and HiFiMan RE-400 earphones and I prefer my kz ed10s. I've owned other kz earphone that aren't nearly as good, so it might be a gamble, but these guys are way good. I've had them about a year now, and they are still going strong, my RE-400 wires started going loose in about 6 months. They don't have the best base response, but nothing else I own can touch the same high frequencies.

I recommend the Sennheiser PX-100-II. I've used the older model years ago and have this model now. They work well, sound great, and can be folded up for easy storage. I'm thinking of upgrading to the PX-200-II if I find a good deal on them.

I don't have an Axon 7 yet, but +1 for Shure SE215's. I use them everyday listening to mostly electronic music and they sound really good for the price. They have good noise isolation properties that lets you keep the volume lower while still being able to hear the music clearly. You look like you're wearing a hearing aid because they're so large, but it's worth it.

The new Sony MDR 1000X seems to be top notch !
If it wasn't so damn expensive i'd jump on it this second !
EDIT : If you're looking for very cheap with great price/quality earphones, the Xiaomi "Piston 4" are the way to go in my opinion.

I am very satisfied with my panasonic rp-hjx20. Impressive surround feeling and bass potential.

I just got the Tennmak Pro Dual IEMs and with Dolby Atmos switched on, the sound is excellent. USD 29. Also available from Aliexpress for the same price (that's where I got them).
They have a mic and an answer/pause button (no volume control).

My oppo pm-3's and audeze el-8's sound decent on the axon with some viper tweaks. This phone has a good internal amp that can drive some power-hungry headphones.

I also bought the KZ ZS3 for $8 on Gearbest and they're good as well, but the Tennmak are great.

It depends on what you listen and honestly to get the best suggestion pay Headfi's introduction and recommendations a visit after you make an account and ask whatever is on your mind and people will answer
I would suggest the re-400, it isn't just a bit extended lower region but more neutralism on the whole spectrum for best edm experience (because to my experience edm is not just bass all the time) also the re's are pretty cheap so you can save some for other stuff you want to buy

What is in your opinion the better choice? Headphones with Bluetooth or with cable? I assume better use with this phone is a headphone with cable...

Recommended headphones

Guys, I bought the US HTC 10, so it came with no headphones.
Which ones do you recommend? I'm really interested in the Sennheiser CX 5.00 but I'm not sure if they're going to take advantage of the DAC. WHat other recommendatios do you have?

I got the HTC "hi-res" earphones as I'm in Europe. They're very good for a bundled pair and I thought they were too bassy but then I set up a audio profile for them listening to frequencies and they sound fine. That function actually works!
I haven't listened to the cx 5.00 for a while but as far as direct experience on the HTC 10, I'm pleased with
-Sony EX650ap, same price range, quite a nice, refined sound.
-Sennheiser HD25 i-ii, sounds just lovely, get deafeningly loud but twice the price and not an iem...
-UE 700 really takes advantage of the dac, so maybe another dual driver like the Xiaomi Hybrid or One More?
This phone is even able to drive my HD600s to acceptable levels. I'm tempted to hang on to my Tidal hi-fi account after the trial ends.

The original earphones are very good for a bundled earphone but aren't really anything special in the grand scheme of things. Those Sennheisers will probably be a decent upgrade. Otherwise, there are plenty of options available online; the HifiMan RE-400 was just on sale for $60, the Shozy Zero can commonly be found for the same price and offers a bassier alternative. The Xiaomi Pistons earphones are also very good and extremely cheap, the Pistons 3 go for around $15 whilst the triple driver hybrid "pro" model is around $25, both are an absolute steal.

I've got some Bose Soundlink over ear headphones and the sound is immense...

I'm using the B&O H7, which sound great too me. Was using the Beats Studio 2 before that. The sound quality was decent but it was lacking deep bass.

HTC has always seem to nail it in the audio department.

Still have to finish burn in with the original htc in ear but I already don't like them, too bassy! I do really love the Zero Audio carbo tenore, they are worth a lot more than the price they're asking for!

I'm using my old HTC8 Harmon Kardon ear buds for mobile use and Sennheiser Momentum 2 over the ear, corded headphones for home use. Both sound nice with this phone but the Sennheisers are my favorite. Being a decent set of over the ear headphones with a lower impedance, means this phone has more than enough power to get them sounding nice without a stand alone amp. I listen to a wide variety of music but they do a good job. Real comfortable and nice build quailty

They're definitely becoming renowned for it, which is great because I think most manufacturers see it as an afterthought. The bundled Hi-Res earphones are so freakin' good.

to big to me, I like small earphones, and those original form HTC are very good to me, but can't bay it anywhere.
