This is hands-down the best phone I have ever used, but I am quite disappointed that the LED notification light was omitted from the hardware.
I was hoping I could use the NoLED app to display notifications instead, on the always-on-display, but unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work.
Does anyone know of any way to display notifications (i.e. text messages, emails, missed calls, etc.) on the always-on-display?

I contacted Huawei about this. I received a canned response, but if enough people request all notifications on always-on-display, maybe they will listen.

Disable messaging and install Google phone and Messages. Mark them as default apps and give them proper rights and you'll have all notifications (home and lock screen). Don't know for Gmail, I use email.

Thanks for the suggestion!
Looks like messages work - I see it displayed on my AOD now.
Not sure about Google phone. I don't see this app on the Play store...
Would also like notifications for WhatsApp, but that doesn't seem possible.

Thanks - will give it a try.
Huawei always on display only for Huawei app, 3rd party apps won't display on the screen. I don't know why did they make this stupid always on display, make no sense. I just shut it off, I don't need to look at the clock and date.

I also missed the notification led on my EVR-AL00 coming from my Mi Mix. Its a pitty that Huawei does not show all notifications on the always on display.
In the last days I evaluated some of the available amoled always on apps in the play store.
Finally I now use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.newgen.alwayson as daily driver.

Compared to other available amoled always on apps it has several advantages:
Shows weather
Displays notification icons
Has optional a simulated notification led
Notifications can be previewed directly
It works for me with direct fingerprint unlock (others close the always on and you have to rescan again in the normal lock screen)
It also has some disadvantages:
Notification Led color and size cannot be customized
It offers a flashing edge, but this cannot be configured a lot and does not use the whole screen, which looks like bad
Weather only shows one configured location, no tracking based on GPS (it cat be set by GPS manually)
To get it work...
Disable Huawei always on
Set all rights for Autostart manually for this app
Exclude it from battery optimization
Give it all rights (I dont use the Cutted Edge feature, so it is not necessary to give draw over other apps right)
Configure the app without Open Camera on slide to left, it does not work
There is another app which has the best looking edge lightning https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.used.aoe But I did not manage to see edge lighting + notification icons in this app and I always had to scan fingerprint twice.
I Have chines version AL00 and no problem with notification without led. Apk NoLed working perfect and I no longer miss the diode I was used to in Note 10. It was only possible to play in the settings and I'm happy. So i solved the problem with Nova launcher when I installed apk Fluid N.G. All I miss is a double tap on display on the Note 8, but I've already used to unlock my face or connect Xiaomi Stratos watch.
Yes works well for those that use always on display, but not if you don't.

Yes but I can not see why it is not used when it is the only way to display a no LED diode notification. The app has no effect on the battery life and I have a SOT over 13h and I usually spend over 2 days! Who has trouble with Always on display?
Good point. But led blinker is nice.

Yes, led blink is nice, but Mate 20X does not have it, which is a shame and I do not understand it because the Mate 20 diode is right over the camera in the tear ...
Just check out a YouTube video, the honor view 20 has a led notification light on the top. Mate 20 and pro also has it. Only mate 20x doesn't, that's sad!
NoLED is cool but the fingerprint sensor doesn't work properly, you have to press the power button first to be able to unlock with fingerprint.
Anyone knows a workaround or similar app? I've seen several for the OP6 but they don't seem to work with our phone.

Hi, I have switched from IPhone to HTC one M8 and finding it ok, but miss a few little things from the iPhone. When the M8 is on standby so black screen, if I get a message all I get is green led flashing to notify me. I would rather the message pop up on the screen same as the iPhone does. Can it be done in the settings is reads like it can, but in reality it doesn't. Unless I'm doing something wrong. I am wondering if also if the samsung S5 rom can be installed on the m8 if I was to root it? As I understand the pop up happens on the samsung. Any help greatly appreciated.

I guess what he means is that all notifications are shown there. But on the stock HTC lockscreen only the HTC apps notifications can be shown, as long as he is usin a stock ROM and not a custom ROM such as ViperOne (as this ROM can show notfications of user defined apps on the HTC lockscreen notification area).
If you want to stay on stock ROM just search the PlayStore there are multiple alternatives to the stock HTC lockscreen which can do what you want and can be installed using PlayStore.

But is it just pop up or are the messages shown in the htc notification widget on the lockscreen? The later is what the OP means as I think.

My company uses iPhones as business phones. So as I'm using an iPhone S4 with iOs on it for business and am quite sure that they included it into their lockscreen as a list and not as simple popup.
I have to confess it's the only feature I realy like on iOs. As I like the stock HTC lockscreen I decided against the use of a third-party app from Google Play.

Yeah I prefer the stock HTC lockscreen too but I don't care about the notification to be honest. Actually I prefer them to not show up at all because everyone will be able to read my text messages without unlocking the phone.

That's a damn good attitude to have. Don't need other people to be abled to spy on your messages this easy.
You could always use a third party sms application like evolve sms? It has a built in popup that unlocks the screen and bypasses the lock screen. This is what I use and absolutely love it!

I would suggest the OP give the dynamic notification app a try. It's really great, I've been using it for ages and it will do what he wants. Don't get rid of sense, it's much better than touchwiz!
Android L, which is coming out later this year has it built in, I played with it on my nexus 5....you'll love the notifications on that, very much like the iPhone.

This should be in Q&A section. Anyway, I have both Ambient Display and Light Flow on. Light Flow does not mess with AD, and works quite well with it. Light flow colors work. I have the Pro version of Light Flow.

Sorry, the question is about an app so I thought goes here? Anyway. How does your AB work? Does it pulse randomly (like Moto X) or only when lifted or notification?
I used light flow pro and it forced screen wakes for a few minutes without a notification being present then it calms down. I uninstalled it and ambient display stays off unless there is a notification

Ah, I noticed that too but hadn't put that down to Light Flow.
I have a GWR, so disabled Ambient Display anyway.
Has anyone got the Sleep function to work?
No matter what Light Flow settings I use - at night, the LED continues to light up my room, so I have to leave the phone face-down at the moment...
I've been emailing the developer about it - but he's waiting for his 5X to turn up (as he's also ordered a 6P, he has to wait for that to turn up in the same delivery...)
I have enabled notification light through Settings and am able to generate a white light flash (repeating) when gmail receives. Has anyone noted fingerprint security have any negative impacts on notifications like this (more curiosity than anything)?
Admittedly its been some time since I have had to use lightflow pro; good app, just been awhile so I may be rusty on settings I am betting.

Anyone else having an issue with lightflow and mms alerts needing to be cleared manually in the app?
To anyone who has Lightflow pro running well: would you mind posting your settings?
I've tried every combination I can think of: root mode on/off, run every command as root on/off, etc. The best the app can manage is a brief pulse on, then off, then a quick on/off before the LED stays off. Have tried direct mode, too. Tried the Legacy version, but it doesn't cover a lot of apps.
I can't seem to get any consistent results otherwise.

I have only had it for one night but it seemed to work fine for me. I changed the sleep method to "time" (it defaults to NFC or something) and set the "start time" to 10:30pm and the "end time" to 6:00AM. I also have ambient display disabled. I am not sure what GWR is though. Also make sure in each app notification setting you do not have "exclude from sleep mode" checked.
I'm using paid version of LF. For now I'm not rooted.
I noticed behaviour you've already talked about.
1. If I'm using ambient screen I always have notifiction icon "Number of notifications". Can I hide that?
I know I can hide it if I disable app notification, but in that case Light flow don't work anymore ...
2. Is there any solution with messing ambient screen and LW led. After recieved notification ambient lights on few times and completely mess up LF ...
Is Legacy version solving those problems?
Thank you.
edit: I solved problem with legacy.
I have en issue with lighflow legacy that when I set my gmail notification to switch screen on, it won't play the notification sound correctly, the screen will light and notification sound is not completed when email is received, it is like once the screen switch on, the notification sound won't complete till the end. Anyone noticed that? disabling switch screen on, will make the notification sound fine.
I have this problem with a N5x and LightFlow.
It doesnt matter if I do use Lightflow normal or legacy, because on legacy I kept seeing a Lightflow notification and the screen turns on with ambient display continuously due to this :S
All I really wanted from the speaker update was a tone when text messages arrive. Shouldn't it use the ringtone volume?
I assumed this would be an obvious use of the speaker. Can anyone explain to me why this does not work and if there are any work arounds. Yes I checked and sound is on and volumes are turned up (media volume, ring volume and watch ringtone). Thanks

I wasn't able to get LightFlow to give notification sounds either on the watch. I agree too, that's the use of the speaker I was most looking forward to. I'm sure a developer will make something that runs on the watch & will play a notification sounds when it intercepts a notification coming through.

I don't think LightFlow has any control over sound notification, only vibration notification. At least that's all I see in the Play Store description:
Code:
Light flow allows you to take control of the notifications on your device.
It's main features are:
- Controlling the notification LED for phones that have them (cycling colors through outstanding notifications)
- Sound control, including repeating sounds
- Vibration control, including custom vibration patterns and repeating vibrations
[B]- Android wear vibration support[/B]
- Sleep times
- Lock screen based notifications (on phones that support live wallpapers on lock screens)
- Contact specific notifications for certain notification types

Now on Google Play, as "Smart Wear Notification".
Works like a charm. With sound notification and/or reading text. May work with many apps though I only have tried it with the standard android message apps.
Finally getting what Android Wear should have provided from the beginning along its sound notification for calls.
so if I read all these correctly.. the naitive huawei sounds are for Calls and Alarms only? Notifications make no audible sound ? I just got my watch today and I know when I went into the sound volumes, they are all turned up and I could hear sounds.. but when I get an Android Messages SMS or Hangouts message.. the watch only vibrates.. and doesn't play a sound..
Thanks!

Now you have a fully functioning Always On Display. You can now customize the AOD via the app.
For those complaining about contents of notification appearing on the AOD. Give this Edxposed app a try :
MaxLock
=================================================================================
For those who have modules not supported with Tai Chi, you can use EDxposed and Tai Chi at the same time.
Step 1: Enable App List Mode in EDxposed Manager settings.
Step 2: Black List Tai Chi in App List.
Now Tai Chi won't force stop with exposed enabled.

Lately i've been trying hard to find a fix for a phone (a.k.a Oneplus 6t ) which has no notification LED and an "Ambient Display" which is not enough (at least for me).
I've managed to get my hands on a Chinese app that was developed for Oneplus users to have the best ALWAYS ON DISPLAY. It works like charm with a Now playing, Dash charging indicator functionality and also displaying contents of your notifications. It replaces the Ambient display provided by Oneplus with this new one. I've not noticed any battery drains using this app. I'm on latest OPEN BETA 14.
Here are some samples i've taken:
I've been using this for the past 3 days and so far i am impressed. The AOD is working perfectly.
I used a substratum theme to make the in display fingerprint black because that is the only thing which stays still.
Here is the apk:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VxwomPA0lNGnA3tBJJYeZq55xdvpmP7E/view?usp=sharing
The app is in chinese language. You might make use of these screenshots to configure it (I don't see any settings that needs to be changed though):
Else, you can use this app translator to change default chinese to english. the app is restricted to number of words that can be translated. You will need to login with email or phone number to use the app.
Hopefully, those who wanna give the app a try, will like it. :good:

Awesome. Just a question. Does the FP work fine? Also what about AMOLED Burn-in?

Fingerprint works perfectly. I used a substratum theme to make it black to avoid burn in. The rest wont affect the screen. It keeps on showing different notifications and everything moves at random intervals.
It also uses the proximity sensor to turn off the ALWAYS ON DISPLAY-> Pocket mode
So how do we install it?

Can i just use the app without to change something on the settings?..
And do you know if we can adjust the AOD brightness?
Or uses the system brightness level...

I think the default settings have the brightness level of the AOD on auto. Light sensor is being used. For me it's working.
The blue bubble option is the one for customization of the AOD. Select it and then the second option is the one for auto-brightness. Toggle it... You will see something appear down saying true or false. If its activated, it will display true. Else false.
it possible to change the clock size?

Nope, you can't. But it do reduces in font size when it displays notifications of apps.
I find the clock size perfect though. :3
Any way to switch from 24-hour format to 12-hour?
Also the dash right under the date usually means that it didn't retrieve weather data. I'm wondering where it pulls weather info from if that's actually the case.
This mod seems promising.
EDIT: Any way to hide sensitive content? I tried looking through the screenshots and following what I can, but it seems either I missed it or the option isn't there/working.
There's a problem when I make a call, the sensor doesn't work and the screen doesn't turn off.

I'm afraid no. This is no such option for 12 hour clock.
For me google sends me instant weather data via notification. So, as long as i have internet, the weather info will be up to date. It displays the google weather notification.
Yeah, the sensitive contents don't seem to work efficiently. Sometimes it doesn't display but sometimes it display.
You can lock your apps using app locker and eventually it wont display the data. It will only notify user of new notification.

OPAodMod is an Xposed module that provides OnePlus devices on OxygenOS and HydrogenOS with an always on display like that on the Pixels (and other devices). It's existed for a while, but in the last few months stopped working due to the main developer (RetroX) moving on to another device. I picked it up, and after initially providing modded versions with only fixes and simple additions, was kindly given access to the full source code. OPAodMod has now been fully translated, with a new GUI which is easier to use.
Features:
Always on display, which runs all the time - unlike the OnePlus version
Customisable layout, with options including seven themes, including Pixel and OnePlus (OnePlus supports all the system clock styles too), and a DVD screensaver (it's exactly what you think it is)
Notification display, showing the text of a notification when you receive it and dropping back to just an icon after a few seconds
Live music lyrics on supported themes
Battery Optimisation options such as forcing doze and setting the refresh rate to 60Hz when the AoD is showing
Option to only display when you 'raise' your phone
Option to hide the screen when flipped/in your pocket, disable it overnight, or after a time period (10 minutes or 15 seconds)
Show your next alarm, current weather, and currently playing music
Display a short message (like that on your lockscreen)
Full settings GUI for the module with a live preview of your clock
Quick Settings toggle to enable/disable the AoD
Support for Ambient Music Mod for displaying ambient Now Playing tracks on the AoD

Installation Guide:
- Install Riru Core in Magisk

- Install the module APK
- Enable the module in EdXposed or TaiChi
- Follow the Required Setup in the app
- Reboot your device
- Check the AoD is working and set it up how you like

Thanks! Just to confirm, this has burn-in protection implemented? Any idea on the impact in the battery life?

Yes, this has burn in protection. The battery life does take a noticeable hit, I'm looking at ways to mitigate it better.

Thanks for confirming! I'll try it out. Looking forward to more features and optimizations.
This is awesome!
Just installed it now and it works AMAZING!
One thing I really wish it had is the Fingerprint unlock option on the AoD, but i'm guessing it might be a bit more work.
Is there a way I can participate in the development of the module?

Fingerprint works on the AoD. Chances are because you've just rebooted, it's falling back to the PIN. When it works from the lockscreen, it'll work on the AoD.
Unfortunately while I was given access to the source code privately, it's still not open source so there's no public development access.

I just noticed that the FP does indeed work, but the FP icon is not showing for some reason.
I'm on OP7TP McLaren if that helps.
It does show up on the lockscreen, though.

That's kind of intentional, though I would like to add an option to make it show an indication of where the sensor is. It's more minimal without it though.

Yes, it's minimalistic-looking without it, but it would be nice to have it toggleable
If I remember correctly, in RetroX's version it was impossible to hide notification text for apps that weren't China-specific. Is that still the case?

There's a short list of apps that are hidden with the toggle enabled:
I'll probably add a GUI to edit them at some point, but might just add some package names to the list before that.

Thanks for the info! Also, I don't know if it's technically possible, but consider following the system settings for hiding sensitive content on the lockscreen instead of a separate GUI/toggle. I currently have that enabled for messaging and mail apps and it works on the OnePlus ambient display as well.

It would be possible, but I'd prefer to leave it as a separate toggle for now. I'll maybe change it to default to match the system when I add the GUI to pick apps though.
Hi! I love the module, well done! I think it would be cool if you could also add a quicksettings toggle which makes it possible to easily turn the AOD on and off.
Just wanted to confirm, this is for rooted devices only? No way to get this without rooting? Great work, nonetheless.
New bugfix release, version 3.0.1b
Fixes:
- No longer shows 'null' for twelve on word clock
- Added translations for charging states
- Added the following apps as sensitive apps:
-> OnePlus SMS
-> OnePlus Phone
-> Google Phone
-> Google Messages
-> WhatsApp
-> Facebook Messenger
-> Facebook
-> Telegram
-> Instagram
-> Snapchat
-> Discord
-> Twitter
-> VK
-> Сбербанк Онлайн
-> Raiffeisen Online Russia
An app picker will be added later, this is just a stopgap.
Download is attached and also attached to first post

Not possible without root, no.
thanks for this app. Unfortunately couldnt get the "AOD only when phone is raised" option to work on 7T. stays on all the time. Would be nice if it could work on 7T as well! thanks
Hey guys,
I'm so glad to have come across this mod. I've been using this mod on my OnePlus 6 since a couple of hours. I can already say it consumes lesser power than the AOD on custom ROMs.
Thanks a lot!
Sohail
This is great, will there be a slider to change display brightness? Or maybe a way to shut off a checkerboard of pixels to reduce the effective brightness?
