My OnePlus 5T doesn't show large image files on browsers. I checked on a different phone and it all worked fine. I tried Chrome and Firefox Focus and got no luck. I tried reboot, reinstalling the apps, deleting cache but nothing worked. I did some testing and I think an image of some particular number of pixels and above doesn't appear.
The largest image I got that shows up is 3649*4543, 16,577,407. The smallest image that doesn't is 3923*4656, 18,265,448.
(I thought I would add links but since I'm a new user, I am not allowed to include links, I don't think giving partial links to bypass this policy is justifiable, so...)
Edit8: Now I can post with URLs.
For the former: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/53/Farida_Arriany,_c._1960_(signed).jpg
For the latter: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8f/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence.jpg
And when I try the latter, I get this.
http://imgur.com/X2k6doV
The firmware version: OxygenOS 5.1.7
Just to be sure: It is not that loading isn't completed.
Edit6: To be clear, the 3923*4656 file is not corrupted or anything. It works perfectly fine on my previous phones and a friend's phone. Also, Snehasish1994 confirmed me that it works fine. I mainly use the 3923*4656 file because it's public domain.
Edit10: I've been mistaking snehasish1994 for snesish1994. I apologize.
This is really strange. Strongly hope someone can help me out.
Edit1: Maybe this issue is limited to JPEG files. A bigger PNG file of the resolution of 4300*5500 appeared on a different website. It complicates the issue further. I can't even think of any cause.
Edit2: I tried "Download link" on the latter 3923*4656 file. I was able to download and see it on Google Photo. However, I couldn't see it when I tapped "Open" upon the completion of download and opened the file in, I guess, Chrome, all I saw were blackness and a small square at the centre.
Edit3: I found that I cannot upload the bigger 3923*4656 file on Twitter. Twitter responds "Some of your media failed to load" right after I finished selecting it for uploading. I think it meets the file requirements of Twitter. And what's more maddening is that the 4300*5500 PNG file I mentioned earlier could be uploaded despite not meeting the requirements. I think this has confirmed my suspicion that something, be it Chrome or some system service or whatever, is refusing to load or process and render large image files (most likely limited to JPEG files) for apparently no reason. I am inclined to believe that this is purely software related issue.
Edit4: And now on Imgur I was able to upload the 3923*4656 JPEG file. This is insane. I really, really hope someone of knowledge will help me out.
Edit5: I tried uploading the 3923*4656 JPEG file again. On Tumblr it was successful, both from Chrome and the Tumblr app. On Pixiv it was a failure from Chrome. On Imgur, as I tested earlier, it was successful when I chose "Upload from Device" but it seems to have failed when I chose "Paste Web URLs" from Chrome. I didn't try the Imgur app.
Edit7: Since reboot and reinstall don't work, I suspect that it is not easily fixable via usual settings and such. Maybe clean flash?... I don't know.
From the fact that on Tumblr and Imgur I can upload the 3923*4656 JPEG file, I suspect that the process that is required on some sites during attaching large image files is not properly working. And this process may also be related to image rendering.
Edit9: It seems that those images are actually loaded into Chrome, or browsers but they just don't get displayed.
I think this is the case because:
1. I was able to download the image on (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8f/United_States_Declaration_of_Independence.jpg) via Option > the download button on Chrome.
2. I downloaded a whole page (https://shakespearedocumented.folger.edu/file/details/151) as an mhtml file, again via Option > the download button on Chrome. When I view it on my OnePlus 5T the image didn't appear expectedly but when I view the same file on a PC offline running Windows 10, the image was displayed. So it is clear that the image is actually contained in that mhtml file, thus I think it is safe to say that the image is actually loaded into Chrome. But it does not show up somehow.
Can you message me the link so I can check that for you?

Yes, I thought that too. But I leave them off for the whole time. I just double checked the setting it was off. Besides I do not have that option on Firefox Focus. Just to make sure, I understand that there is no data saving option on OnePlus 5T itself. Am I right? The battery saving is obviously off.
Snehasish1994, PM'd you. Thanks.
Is it possible that my OnePlus 5T is defective, even though everything else seems to be fine? I got it only few days ago.

I'm on stable. I don't have a good memory but as far as I can remember, I got mine with Android 7.1.1 installed. Then I got OTA twice, now the OxygenOS version is 5.1.7. Android security patch level says 1 October 2018. When I was downloading the latest OTA update the internet connection went down. I don't remember exactly how it happened though. Could this have caused this weird problem?
What does it mean to switch channel? Does it involve difficult-for-layman operations?

In your case I mean trying official open beta you can find how to switch to open beta here if you are interested https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5t/how-to/soon-oxygenos-beta-1-android-o-oneplus-t3726074 do it at your own risk although there's very little chance things going wrong

I got this from expansys. So I'm not really sure if I can get warranty from OnePlus itself. Expansys stated that flashing ROM will void their warranty. Having said that, I will ask if I can get warranty from OnePlus.
Follow-up.
I am still trying to solve this issue within the current state. But I am now suspecting the issue could only be solved, if it's even solvable, via likes of complete factory reset, clean flash and such. So I started contacting the shop and OnePlus trying to confirm details about warranty and also asking for tech support, now waiting for their responses.
People are still very cooperative, but as of now no one has figured out what the cause may be.
I will be updating as things progress.
I just found that picture-in-picture doesn't function in addition. My understanding is that if you activate this feature by accepting apps to use it via Settings > Apps > Special access > Picture-in-picture > (any app) > Allow picture-in-picture and no additional tweak required, it will do just that. I know that outside of NA, YouTube doesn't do it unless you are a YouTube premium member. I checked this on Chrome and Tumblr.
At this point I'm almost convinced that there are a few more issues I haven't encountered yet and these issues, though looking like they are unrelated, may have arisen from one cause.
I haven't received any response after the last post so I'm not going rush to clean flash and see if these problems can be fixed but it's so tempting to say the least.
I hope that some people still read this thread.
Edit: Oops. Picture in picture does work. I was too nervous, it seems. But the original problem persists so the situation is no better than before.
After checking details about warranty coverage with OnePlus and Expansys, I tried hard factory reset and ROM flash. And sadly, both didn't work.
Snehasish1994 suggested that I try remote debugging, which seems quite overwhelming for me but I will see what I can do.
But well, I am considering return or replacement at this point really. Because, what else can I do? It may not seem like a deal breaker but I use large JPG files quite often, like really often.
I've been mistaking the guy's name snehasish1994 for snesish1994. I apologize.
Update
Yes, the problem persists, still.
I went to a local repair shop. I told them about the symptom and what I confirmed thus far. They were unable to solve the issue. And they said that it is safe not to open the back and inspect the internal to keep the warranty intact. I got no new information there except that they think the problem is too complex to be hardware related, which is a relief at least.
Snehasish1994 is still helping me solve it. Thank you, snehasish. Now, he inquired me if I tried Firefox and actually I hadn't at that point, except for Firefox Focus. I tried Firefox and to my surprise it works as it should!
But then, I am still unsure as to whether the issue on Chrome and Firefox Focus, which are my go-to browsers, can be fixed. I use Firefox Focus much less than Chrome so I am okay even if the issue on Firefox Focus won't be fixed but I can't accept it on Chrome both because I use it most often and it is now the only proprietary web browsing app provided by Google.
Oh, and in the first post in this thread, I said, at Edit9, that the image seems to be loaded into Chrome. This was confirmed via DevTools. Again, snehasish suggested me that I use it. So if I can tell Chrome (and hopefully Firefox Focus as well) to render large JPG files, I should be good to go.
That's all I got since the last post, I think.
Finally, having tried every possible solution only to find the issue was still there, I went for a replacement. I will be receiving it in the next few days or so. Hopefully there will be no problem.
I think anything beyond this point will all be irrelevant to the topic of this thread so this would be my last post on this thread.
It was really annoying to deal with the issue, but I am grateful to find people on xda are helpful. Snehasish in particular has helped me a lot.
That last post would have been the final post. If the replacement didn't have the same problem...
It got delivered a few hours ago. The first thing I checked was of course that nasty issue. It was depressing to see the same issue but I thought "well, it can't be a faulty device or a one-off bug then".
With the clues I listed on this thread, I was testing again. I was thinking about why on earth Firefox can display those images while Firefox Focus can't. And I discovered that the two browsers use different browser engines: The former uses Mozilla's in-house Gecko engine whereas the latter uses Google's Webview engine, which Chrome uses too. But fortunately, Mozilla is trying to implement Gecko on Firefox Focus lately and there's the Nightly version, which has Gecko. I immediately tried it. Boom, the images in question appeared. I'm just a layman so I know nothing about technical details, but I believe that the problem is somehow related to Google's Webview engine.
It may be beyond my capability to dig any deeper but this had me interested.
Anyway, life is tough.
Another followup.
I updated the firmware to the latest OOS 9.0.1. And the problems I have discussed are gone for good it seems. I can now view large images without any problem. After all it turned out I didn't have to replace the previous device then.
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with my 5t now. I hope no one else is facing this issue but if anyone is, hope this thread helps.

Market filters:
When a user searches or browses in Android Market, the results are filtered, and some applications might not be visible. For example, if an application requires a trackball (as specified in the manifest file), then Android Market will not show the app on any device that does not have a trackball.
The manifest file and the device's hardware and features are only part of how applications are filtered — filtering also depends on the country and carrier, the presence or absence of a SIM card, and other factors.
Changes to the Android Market filters are independent of changes to the Android platform itself. This document will be updated periodically to reflect any changes that occur.

Not being able to get apps? Did you read the link? Doubtful. Uh sure. Have fun with vanilla 2.2 and 0.0 apps.
I'm sorry, did you read your own link? If you had scrolled down, it shows several examples of what can be filtered. The filters are implemented by the application developer themselves, and if they don't, they still show up in the market.
Besides, filtering by the application has been in Android since 2.0. Any application that deems a device incapable of running it (for example, a lack of a light sensor) can stop itself from running.
some kind of filter (the ones I've heard of so far are incompatible screen resolution, unverified builds, and protected apps) is already being applied to 2.1 in the AOSP build. I couldnt see Yelp, the Android Community and TMZ apps for whatever reason

Oh yeah, how suspicious. French people couldn't possibly prefer apps in French and people with that new Dell pad thing probably still want SMS and contact apps.
Yeah
so you are saying not upgrade to 2.2 because marketplace will filter apps for our phone, but stick with 2.1 because it doesn't?
well genius, why don't you go and install http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.yelp.android on your phone and let us know how that 'no filtering' works out for you.
When I was running my Vougue we ran into this problem as well, its not a big deal at all. from what I remember it was checking about the build.prob and screen size that is setup in your startup. what I used to do was set my phone to my the specs for the G1, then install the apps after adjusting the density to fit everything on screen and then reboot using factory startup. it worked pretty well for most of the apps since many only blocked off whatever border the developer had.
heres the problem though but with the pace we are going it wont come up for a while, once we decide we have a rom stable enough to flash we lost the abilty to change the settings since WM is copletely gone and no haret was used. I switched over to the Touch Pro and we had the exact same problem which was solved in the EXACT way but we were not flashed still(TP2 still has a LOOOONG way to go sad to say), kept the touch pro 2 for only a few weeks before they replaced my Sprint Line TP with a Touch pro 2 due to all the TP1 problems and i'm still saddened by the slow progress. I am a developer myself and even an avid budsmoker and was still able to help out. now Refer has done a great job but from my understanding he is just doing most changes to the Android Filesystem, theirs a couple other guys working on the kernels which would be were all the hardware problems are going to be fixed from. no matter what build we use something in the kernel is either not right, or we dont have the driver in place for Android itself and since we have few Hardware level developers working on these things it seems to be low progress.
Hi, rather new here so I can't post in the thread on the developers board. Thought I'd try here. I recently flashed Tiny's latest CM 10.1 nightly rom and I really like it so far. There are a couple of issues but after messing with it for a while, it's mostly smooth and works well. My biggest beef, aside from those couple issues is Netflix. The app loads and I can select a show, but when I try to load a video, I just get the red loading screen that goes on forever until I hit the back button. I tried an older apk, and it wouldn't load, period (1.5.2), which I guess is to be expected when running Android 4.2. I tried 2.1 and I got the same issue with the red loading screen. Tried loading it in the browser and I got the usual page that tells me I need a certain browser for it to work. The app worked just fine in the official CM 7.2. Is there an option in settings I'm missing or something or does it not work on this rom (which I don't see why it wouldn't)?
Other naggy issue is epsxe. It works alright but if I press a volume button, it either increases or decreases all the way and all buttons freeze. Nothing works. Home, menu, power button, touch, etc (yet the emu keeps going and the music keeps playing). Sometimes when I press an on-screen button to move, it's like the button gets stuck and the character keeps moving in that direction. I have to remove the battery to reboot. Did not have this issue in cm 7.2.
Other than that, awesome rom and thanks, Tiny, for working on it.
EDIT: Well, I just tried using epsxe again and it even worked when using the volume button. Not sure why it worked except that I let the game load for a bit before pressing anything. After that, it worked just fine. So, I guess it may be even an app issue on 4.2, rather than the rom. Hope Netflix is as easy to get working.
Netflix hasn't worked on JB or ICS. Known issue since day one. Probably won't be fixed as it's not a high priority in the overall picture.
...sorry...I was on the phone...

Well, that's disappointing. I really like this this rom but Netflix was one of the biggest reasons to keep using this device. It's mainly used as a tablet now and I don't want to buy anything else right now. Funny thing, Netflix was the only reason I didn't switch from Windows 7 to Linux. I figure, if I'm paying them every month, I should be able to play their vids on any device I please and it irks me that I can't even get it working in the android browser. Oh well. Thanks for the quick response.
EDIT: Well, I did some research and found that Netflix 1.81 seems to work to an extent. I get sound and subtitles but no video. Going to look into it some more.

It works on better supported devices on ICS and JB. The issue here is the codecs and hardware support / drivers which will not be fixed for now. Just confirming its not androids fault or Netflix's.

So no amount of tinkering with older apks and workarounds (to make it so the app uses older netflix video players) will work because the rom/hardware simply doesn't support playback? I was looking at some other threads and google and a lot of people seem to be having trouble getting Netflix to work on 10.1 and Android 4.2 in general. Seems when the app detects Jelly Bean, it uses its newest video player, which has some problems on some devices. Forcing it to use an older player seems to work for some people. Adding a line to the code to make it use player "6" instead of "10" or something. Haven't actually applied anything to the app to try it because I'm a complete novice at this.
You're the expert and I assume if there was an easy method that wouldn't screw anything up in the CM 10.1 build, you'd apply it. I do appreciate the work you and others are putting into these roms and other than this Netflix issue, it rocks. I may go back to CM 7.2 after a bit but I'll definitely keep an eye on your updates and try them out.

On the last page, someone posted the code that enabled it to work on theirs.
EDIT: I tried the Xposed app workaround, by the way, which did not work for me, using 1.8.0 (thought it was 1.8.1 but wasn't. Plan on trying that next) or the newest version. I realize that these are different devices, but I'm hoping there's a way to get it to work on ours. I wonder if there's a way to trick it into thinking it's Gingerbread instead of ICS (in the thread) and using the player that works on CM 7, if it would work?

I don't have a netflix account currently (had it and didn't use it), so I can't do much testing but based on the link you showed me, the app should work fine. Try the init.d script linked in the github in the thread you posted. Are you familiar with pushing files to your device? You just need to copy it to /system/etc/init.d and add execute permissions. Usuaully I use read-write-execute for user and read-execute for group and other.

The xposed_init file under assets? Can't say I've ever tried this before. I know how to add files to that folder, but no idea how to copy it to a file or whatever that would work. Don't know how to execute permissions either.
Looking things up, I can't just add a file to my sdcard and use ES File explorer to add it to the init.d folder? I copied one of the files on my desktop and opened it up with notepad. It sadly didn't help me. Like I said, total novice with android here or this stuff in general. Would like to give this a shot though. Do I add the text to notepad and then delete the .txt or do I need to make a .js file? As for permissions, do I just add r rw and x to the file?

Yeah, you can add it to notepad and remove the .txt at the end but it uses different line breaks in Windows than what Linux uses so the script may not work right. I'm not sure though. The worse thing that can happen is nothing. Android doesn't use .js which is Javascript. For permissions, yes that will work.

Tried it. Not sure if I did it right. Most likely not. lol But in any case, it doesn't work. Getting a bit tired, so I may just relent. I'm sure many who are more experienced have tried already.
Just curious: If your primary use for your old Dinc is as a portable Netflix viewer, then why not just flash back to a stable GB-based ROM and enjoy?
Seems that would be a lot simpler than trying to get Netflix to work on JB, especially if you're not doing anything with the phone that requires JB.

I like Jelly Bean. I like how it looks and feels. It's a more mature Android. Plus, I like keeping up to date with software. It's kind of nice to have 4.2 running on the aging, yet good o'l Dinc, when some newer devices don't even have 4.1 yet officially.
Also, I got it working, by the way! Before, when I downloaded the newest one onto 10.1, it would just continuously load when picking a video and not work. After tinkering, I got it to play sound but no video. I could tell that the video player was different than the one I used on 7.2 (also, the newest app). I switched back to 7.2 for a bit and downloaded my apps. I backed everything up using Clockwork mod so I could go back to it whenever. Then I backed up all the Apps with Titanium Backup. I switched back to Tiny's 10.1 and restored the apps. I tried out Netflix and it worked. It was using the same player it used on 7.2. I don't know if it detects Jelly Bean when you download it from Google Play or if it does it when you sign in to your account. When I restored it, I was already signed in, so maybe that's it. At any rate, it works.
Well, I spoke too soon. It did work for the first few videos but then stopped. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling with the Titanium Backup, but when I try to choose a video, it says I've been signed out. I sign back in and I'm back to the forever loading red screen. So yeah, I think it detects which OS I'm on as I sign in. Just a guess though. Just shows that it has nothing to do with your ROM aside from their newest player not working properly on it. It can indeed be fixed via the software with some tinkering.
Can you check the value for int name="nflx_player_type" in /data/data/com.netflix.mediaclient/shared_prefs/nfxpref.xml from a working Netflix in Gingerbread? Easier yet, pull that file from your Netflix backup from Gingerbread for me. Check for passwords in the file and clear them out before giving it to me for security.

Here you go. Says It's using Player 9. I have read that 10 is the newest player. At least I believe so.
Edit: just checked that file on 10.1. It says player 10. That means it switched when I signed back in.

Yes and it didn't work. Then I tried "6". Didn't load. I tried 9 again and for whatever reason, it loaded. It works just fine now, using the same player it did in 7.2. The kicker is that I check the XML file again and it changed somewhat. It now says "6" and it looks different. I believe the Player line used to be before the Logged in line. Now the logged in line is last. If there was some way to force it to use 6 every time, even when logging in, we'd have a working netflix app on your rom.
Maybe "old app version=17" is the key, I don't know.
EDIT: Exited the app. Still works. Rebooted the phone. Still works. There's no log out button, so I assume to log out, I need to clear data, which I assume would just put me back at square one. Seems to be working fine now, as long as I stay signed in. If I somehow have to sign in again, I'll check the xml file.
Attached the file. Just edited the user id part.
Well, it was working. Then it quit. I checked the xml file and it had switched to 10. Didn't sign in or out or anything. Tried the 6 file and it immediately switched back to 10. So, I uninstalled and then installed 1.8.1. Replaced the nfxpref file with the one I backed up and it worked. Funny thing, it's actually using an older version of the player. I believe that may actually be "6". In cm7.2, it said "9" and was using a newer version of the player (newer than the one I'm using now). It seems to work well so far. Haven't tried updating from this yet, to see if the newest one works by updating, but I doubt it would work anyway. I did notice that in the shared prefs folder, there's only one other file with the nfxpref file. In the newest version, there looked to be about six or seven other files.
Watching this with interest, if you guys figure it out please post a guide and link to it because you're not alone. My Netflix stopped working when I upgraded to 10.1 as well (interestingly it worked fine on my ICS One-Click ODIN Rom that I got last June, not CM) and this was the first thread to pop on my google search as I've started looking for answers.
*UPDATE* Got mine working using the directions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2101525
Hope this helps!

Anyone else getting the bug on updated/non stock chrome that causing the browser to become blank or just stuck at the background color after it tried to load/reload the page you want to view?
This bug occur when I leave the chrome on for too long in the background with several tabs open or heavy web pages
The only way to fix this is by closing tabs and clearing the app itself from ram
This issue occur on both stable and beta version of chrome, any chrome other than the one provided with stock rom
Anyone else experiencing this? Any fix/solution?[emoji55]
me dude. i just had enough of it and removed the update and now it's all back to normal.
Yeah removing the update can fix it but then it defeat the purpose of having update capability, is there any way to make google aware of this?

I am also having this problem. The issue is known to Google, if you research it. We have to wait for an update to see it go away. It's a sad state of affairs. I like Chrome and now I can't use it. And it ruins my exp3ri3nce with my G3, as the problem is practically non-existent on my N7.

According to a google community thread, apparently this is not an lg g3 exclusive issue, this happened on other devices as well and look pretty random
Hopefully a fix soon come because I've tried other browsers and while some of them are nice but they tend to eat much more battery compared to chrome
My phone is smooth for the most part.
Some minimal stuttering when scrolling.
Sometimes I have stutters when swiping down or opening notifications, using multitasking. It's still less than competition.
What bothers me the most are the slowdowns, there are menus and UI elements that consistently have like 15fp/s.
I have these in certain locations or apps.
1. When I have the old open with menu pop-up with apps shown in a vertical list
2. Google Photos when in landcape and it seemingly switches to different color space
3. Some older gen apps
I haven't been able to find anyone else who confirms experiencing these issues too.
Google support was useless.
Try disabling Digital Wellbeing. It's helped a lot of Pixel users.

try going back to the latest version of oreo. I find it smoother and the battery seems more steady on the decline.

I already did that, it improved the responsiveness and delay, but all of these issues still stand.
I can't understand if I am truly the only one, because I can't find nobody complaining, except when there was that huge delay, but I don't have such extreme case.

I don't really want to do that, there are many improvements from Pie, that I really favor. Did You go back to Oreo because You were experiencing the issues, how long ago was this?
Try factory resetting then restoring. I'm on pie and have no stuttering whatsoever

I got my pixel 2xl in November and liked oreo but upgraded after a few weeks to pie. Had it going for a little over a month and battery was the first thing I noticed having the operating system take up second most battery next to screen on time. Too many features and background stuff happening I saw no benefit for so I decided to try Pie ROMs to customize the volume rocker menu and just have a cleaner gapps with less pie stuff. After a few weeks of different ROMs I just went back to stock Oreo and haven't looked back. My curiosity of trying pie and customizing ROMs was fulfilled and now I'm just keeping what I found the safest for everyday when shuffling apps and relying on battery.

Can you try to record a 4K video, then play it back on Google Photos, and as it's playing swipe up?
Nobody asked the most important things:

If 100% stock, there's probably not much you can do except a factory reset. If you've already done that with little to no improvement, then maybe you just have an aging device.
If rooted, I'd suggest a full wipe, 100% clean flash of the latest factory image (leave the -w intact).
My 2 XL is one of the earliest released devices (Oct 17) and it still runs like new. Of course I'm rooted and flash a fresh factory image monthly (or every other month) and only charge my battery for 15% to 95% (no empirical evidence that it absolutely helps, but it doesn't hurt).

Stock official Pie. Had the issue for all the versions I ever had, since I started noticing the issues ~1 month after purchase. Purchased as new in 2018 November.
Not related to aging, maybe defective hardware. No physical or otherwise abuse. I take extra care not to overcharge the battery, or discharge.
It runs "like new" to me as well, but I have stutters in certain places, and it's uncertain to me if it's even a hardware defect, maybe it's software bug.
I have performed a factory reset. And I also tried opting in for Android Q beta, and then opting out, to make the phone download a new factory image. But I only ever did it with the phone, without rooting or anything similar.

I'm just not convinced that this is indeed a hardware issue.
I've seen users talking about this, a little bit, but none have taken this seriously, so maybe they just get used to it.
For comparison OnePlus 3T and Samsung S8 is so much more laggy compared. But I didn't get the low frame rates in earlier mentioned areas.
Edit: To further explain the reason for not RMA'ing. If there's no proof that the issue is RMA'able, then I'm just going to waste my and their time on something that can't be fixed.
Edit2: There are people saying that Samsung phones don't lag and stutter, yet I have not seen a single Samsung phone that doesn't lag and stutter. Yes, even the S10. Pixel 2 XL is smoother than the S10. But while it is smoother, I experience these frame rate slow downs, I do not see on other phones.

And You are not counting in, but notice the lags and stutters that get introduced, when you use the phone while apps are installing or updating, yes?

The only time I experience stutters/lag with my 2 XL is when I refuse to stop using Froyo era apps, or when messing with custom Roms / kernels. The lag usually goes away once I clean flash the factory image, or delete the 30 year old apps
I've been very fortunate with most of my devices. Maybe I'm not as adventurous in my flashing, beta testing, or experimenting as others,

Absolutely, the "Open with" dialog is the single lagging place in all the Pixel UI.

Solution: Uninstall Aurora and reinstall it from F-Droid.
Before I dive in, 2 questions:
- I'm still runnin the december update, do I need to update to the januari update before I can flash Calyx?
- Is there a way to backup my current install?
Edit: I bit the bullet anyways, first updating to the Januari update, painless process, btw. I decided that I didn't care about a backup.
First impressions: Very nice looking and I saw pretty quickly that within CalyxOS you can back stuff up outside of the bootloader.
Had the 'Aurora store' bug, fixed after reinstalling it.
Gonna love exploring the OS in the coming days.
I have one question about a launcher: I have the paid version of Nova Launcher, and I'm logged into Aurora anonymously, so I can't DL paid apps. Does anyone have an alternative to Nova Launcher? I absolutely love this app (the gestures etc. are a dream) so preferably a FOSS alternative with close to the same functionality would be awesome. I have been able to migrate to FOSS/free apps for all of my paid ones, but I still can't find anything better as a launcher.
Edit2: Might have been nice for them to put a warning before flashing that it will completely wipe your phone.. I made a few last minute backups on the internal storage before flashing. Everything is lost now. Luckily I back stuff up often, but I still lost stuff, so a warning from them might've been nice.
Edit3: I now can't log into my google account (for retrieving my whatsapp backup Fixed by using another phone and copying the local backup to my Pixel) because it can't connect to the server... know error apparently, but I can't find a fix for it.
Why oh, why, do I always decide to try this stuff on a sunday evening when I should go to bed...

Just got the februari update.. the most painless update I've ever had on a smartphone. Really digging CalyxOS.
About the adblockers; I already run a 'normal' VPN, so VPN based ablocking won't work, right?
Some other random questions:
Any suggestions for (preferably FOSS) keyboards? I currently use love swiftkey, but I refuse to sign up to download skins, can't seem to restore my backup, and I don't trust Microsoft. I can't seem to find a lot of open source ones.
I also have some shared calendars from google that I unfortunately need to use, but I don't want to sign in to google on my phone. Any tips to get this to work? I can import regular google calendars into my nextcloud, but not the shared ones.

About the adblockers with VPN - you can utilize "Secure DNS" option in Android. I highly recommend NextDNS or BlahDNS for no-logging, adblocking DNS service.
As for the keyboards, there are AnysoftKeyboard (has swipe), OpenBoard and FlorisBoard. I am using Anysoftkeyboard and I am pretty happy. I'm beta testing it, and new version should be out soon. Also, Calyx has a firewall feature that allows you to block internet access for any app you want. Just go to the Settings -> Apps and then Data Usage and you can block Swiftkey from there. Calyx Team is currently working on a better UI for firewall, should be out in the following months.

I'm liking Anysoftkeyboard so far. I only wish you could remove the smilie and voice buttons, that would make the spacebar a bit wider.
Will the scureDNS stuff work nicely with a VPN, since they use their own ones, AFAIK. I got it to work, just wondering if it doen't mess with the security of the VPN.

I love using Anysoft Keyboard
I just tried calyxos first time it today myself for 8 hours today. It ha sbeen very nice so far, although most of that 8 hours went in to setting everything up.
Soemthing I hate is that the google camera apk from aurora store is super old.. Ibut that is not calyxos fault.. Probably not that the small arrow to lower the keyboard is ont he left side and doesnt seem to be adjustable either..?
Will have to look around for some safe place to download a more recent gcam or I guess use some port.. Too bad I heard the ports are always buggy and bad and since I got a true pixel for the first time ever I was looking forward to run it with the best possible camera software.

I am using GCam 7.3.018 by Urnyx05 since few weeks and it is all good... If I remember well, I got it here https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-urnyx05/
I don't know if the version 8 does the job on this device, I did not try but am interested to hear back if you try
Edit: check this thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/gcam-camera-px-for-google-pixel-1-2-3-3a-4.3875663/post-84514901

I went ahead and installed the latest official Google camera software from apkmirror. I didnt want to go through the rabbithole of finding what port is the least broken, while also getting the latest and greatest update wise..
Altough now that I've used it for a few days im suspecting I don't have HDR. I cant find any options with HDR anywhere in the app, so maybe something wrong as I heard that if you run googles own gcam on custom roms (I guess calyxos as well?) You loose HDR?
Also its quite annoying that you have to use Google photos to o preview the pictures and I don't want to use that.

I can just say that downloading the version 8.1 linked in the thread I referred to in my previous post should make you happy... I just tried it and all seems to be working without any hassle. And it does not look like leading you to a rabbithole.

I guess that is why people are porting the app. I have working HDR (at least the option is here and can be switched, how to make sure that hdr is ok btw?) and I can check the photos with the alternative gallery apps, or at least with the default gallery. There is an option in GCam to allow using gallery other that Google Photo.
May I ask why Google photo is a problem? Looks like you can block all privacy-concerning behaviors...
Then, more generally, I am running CalyxOS with default microG settings on this device since two weeks and everything is just perfect. All is working perfectly and the battery consumtion is really good.
Great job! Perfect ROM for me on this device.

Exciting! I just went ahead and downloaded the gcam mod you linked to, latest version.
I was already quite happy with the camera just moving from a xiaomi Mi 8 with lineage - using the f-droid open camera only.. Totally worthless experience imo..
At first glance there is definetly more options here including HDR. However the third party picture viewer is still not optional..
Honestly you are right I could use google photos and just remove internet access but I would rather not.. But if Im forced I guess I must.. Did you do anything special to get third party gallerys to work?
About the calyxos on pixel 4a 5g .. I absolutely LOOOOVE it man.. It is lightyears ahead of lineage experience that Ive had past 2 years. Love it!
