TWRP backup and restore different ROMs - Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro Questions & Answers

If I am on MIUI 10 stable and flash custom rom, ie, Pixel Experience, and want to restore the backed up MIUI rom, is it a straightforward process with TWRP? Anything I should be aware of, ie, partitions to restore or leave alone, encryption, etc? Thanks.

How to quickly install old apps/settings after new ROM's

As above
I'm just curious on how people generally restore their device with their previous apps/settings e.c.t after flashing a new rom.
For example, I intend to flash AndroidNow to my G3 and run it for a few weeks and then flash Cyanogen. Does that mean I have to start afresh and re-download all my apps and everything after the install? Is there an easier way of doing everything?
I would appreciate any help

There are applications like Titanium Backup or in our phone just for the stock roms we have LG Backup.
If you're installing a new version of the same ROM, it's generally safe to restore APPs and APP data. It's never a good idea to restore system settings after flashing ROMs. And if you're flashing a ROM that's significantly different (such as stock-based to AOSP, or even between two different variations of AOSP ROMs), I wouldn't recommend restoring app data, either.

Nandroid restore not fully working

Briefly as I can, I switched from Treskmod (based on Omni) so I could try out nolimits rom. I decided to go back to Treskmod some time later so I flashed my backup.
Treskmod appeared to be up and running accept there was no sound in the music and no sound in YT (also video appeared really laggy.
I had an older backup so I tried that with the same exact results.
I do think this has to do with the OS Firmware needing to be flashed. When Treskmod booted up I notice it skipped the screen with the 1+ logo and went right to the rom boot animation.
My question, if that is indeed the case, is how do I do that? Flash OP Firmware, reboot recovery THEN restore my backup?
I just don't understand why it needs to be flashed before restoring my backup since both Treskmod and nolimits have OS Firmware built-in.
Thanks

All you need to do is flash ROM, custom kernel if you have one and noverity if you're decrypted. To fix this issues I'd recommend backing up all your apps through swift backup and clean flash the ROM and restore your apps through swift backup after installing from the play store.

I know how to flash a rom and restore data. My question is why are none of my nandroid backups restoring when coming from nolimits? I'm certain it has to do with needing the proper oos firmware (because of missing 1+ boot logo) BUT my backup of treskmod should already have the correct firmware baked in. So I'm not sure.
Yes. Getting Treskmod up & running again is easy, but if you like to try different roms, being able to quickly restore a backup is important or at least very convenient.

Question regarding restoring a TWRP backup

I have my A2 Lite rooted and running POSP Andorid 10. TWRP is installed and the phone is decrypted. I am able to make nandroid backups. If I switch ROMs and want to go back to POSP, when I restore the nandroid backup will I need to switch slots?
Also, if the phone gets borked for whatever reason and I restore the backup, will I again need to switch slots?

No need to switch slots. TWRP restores to the current active slot.
Since there are more and more ROMs with custom vendor I also backup and restore vendor img. Not only vendor but the image, otherwise it didn't work for me.

What TWRP are people using for curtana?

Hi all, I'm currently running miui EU rom 11.0.11 with bootloader unlocked and TWRP installed. However there are so many different twrp recoveries available all with different things working....
So far I've only flashed one rom since I've got the phone but with all these amazing looking custom ROMs around, I'd like to try out a few but it seems backup and restore is currently not possible.
TLDR: anyone know of a TWRP with working backup for Xiaomi redmi note 9s CURTANA?
Cheers

You should use the latest recovery version available, I think now is the OrangeFox recovery, it's the unified (miatoll) version. To can make backup, the recovery need to able to handle the encryption installed by ROM. To restore the backup... another challenge. I using only data backup and when want to restore, I wipe data, flash the rom, wait for first boot (set same pin code as used in backup), than restore the data in recovery. In case of unlucky situation (encryption difference between "restored" and previous rom, the rom stuck at first boot and need to format data partition (will delete internal storage too!!).
I use ofox recovery, having stock rom in an sd card and migrate backup I just flash new rom and when I want to come back, I flash stock and restore migrate. Nandroid backups are a bit risky I think.

Question How does restoring work in this phone?

For context, I want to clear up a few things before trying to root so I don't end up bricking the phone.
So after reading a few threads it seems even recovering via twrp is messed up in this phone. Can someone shed some light on this matter?
Can I restore system, data, and boot partitions via twrp in case something goes wrong (while staying on official miui roms everytime, I don't intend to install custom roms) and I have to revert the phone back to the state it was in at the time of a backup?
It feels like at the very least we would be required to re-flash the entire firmware via mi flash tool and then restore whatever is needed via twrp later. Will this work?
Also I hear using twrp to install the official firmware is not a good idea, what's that about?
I know long post and a lot of questions, so please bear with me.
Thanks.
Custom ROMs and Stock ROMs differ in one aspect, which partitions are left untouched. Since stock ROM is a lot more invasive and formats all partitions, official flash method is recommended.
When you mess things up, mi flash tool is safest option. Its safe to experiment, backup, restore on boot+system+data in TWRP across ROM installs but don't mess up recovery partition. Remember to format data between ROM installs unless dirty flashing on same android version
