Screen Under UV Light - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

Has anyone else seen this on their screen under UV light? I was messing around with my UV flashlight and noticed it. Just wondering if it's normal. In normal light the screen is fine. It's probably nothing to worry about but I figured I'd check to be sure.

For anyone interested this is normal. I went to a Verizon store and tested one of their display units and it was identical to mine.

That's too funny, I just saw the thread you created. At least I'm not the only one who noticed it. I'm thinking it might be the glue holding the screen down.

That would make a lot of sense, and also irritates me that mine has so much less glue [emoji23]

That's the adhesive used to bind the display to the glass it's called LOCA or Liquid Optically Clear Adhesive. It shows up under UV lights because UV is used to cure/dry the adhesive. There's nothing wrong with it and that's how it is supposed to be.

same on my oneplus 6
except on my oneplus 6 it goes all the way to the edges.

What's interesting is that I put a few iPhones under the uv light and none of them appear to have any loca visible. Makes me wonder how they adhere the panels to the glass and also I'd be curious how Samsung does it since apple and Samsung typically always score the best display scores. Not that the loca would have any effect on this, but curious none the less

Yeah I have no idea why some are more visible than others. Probably done by design or the differences in the manufacturing process perhaps.

I'm not surprised by not seeing anything on the iphones. Apple has long had the most stringent manufacturing processes and tolerances. Would be interested to see how some recent Samsung's compare tho.

This is the wife's Note 8. It's there but not as noticeable. Maybe it's thicker glass because of the curved screen but on my son's Note 8 I couldn't see it at all.

On Samsung's I would guess it depends on the country their made in. I know Samsung in particular sources phone from Korea and China with the units coming from Korea usually showing less issues, likely cause of tighter manufacturing tolerances

Yes, those of you who had one for your old Galaxy S2, it's now available for the Note. I consolidated a bunch of orders in my country and these will belong to a bunch of crazy cats who were willing to pay a hefty amount for this screen protector.
This protector is slightly thinner than the old 3M Estoc+ on the SGS2, but the surface is a lot slicker. Scotchtape could not even stick properly to it for me to lift it up to remove dust. The surface feels FANTASTIC! It's matte, yet it's glossy as seen in the photo. I know there are other protectors in the market, but this is still my favourite one.
No rainbow effect, glossy clarity, and matte feel, this is why this thing is the best protector IMO. You can find this protector in gmarket, go to the co.kr version and change to the English site.
http://english.gmarket.co.kr/challe...pos_class_kind=T&keyword_order=3m+estoc++note
That's the link for anyone that wants it, I certainly don't understand it too well.
I will keep my eyes for it, too. It looks really nice! Does it at all mess with the image clarity? I had those Matte screen protectors and felt great to the touch, but readability was HORRIBLE.

Most of the time the clarity is affected by the horrendous rainbow effect for the lesser matte screen protectors. The rainbow effect is nearly invisible, and I would say it's even negligible. I can't see it in a white screen, maybe some can. This is why I swear by this protector, because the screen is clear like a gloss screen protector, but has the matte feel. You can say it's like an improved and better SGIPEN Ultra Optics.
Vulpix, missed the order. Any extras?
thanks for highlighting this screen protector as the best out there
showing as 16.10 dollars for me so around £10..
anyone interested doing a mass order in the UK?

(gauging interest) Slickwraps Camera Lens Protector

***PLEASE CAST YOUR VOTE UP TOP***
So, after seeing questions on the XDA forums and over at Reddit asking about this, i pitched the idea to Weston over @slickwraps and he immediately replied with some interest and sent out some samples to me for testing.
I believe he said this material is 99.5% optically clear so I set out to take a couple test shots before and after to see if they reduced the quality of the images any.
On to the pics.
How they arrive
WITHOUT Lense Protector
bamboo android without protector
bamboo android WITH protector
Bowling Champ! without protector
Bowling Champ! WITH protector
as you can see, the quality is consistent between all images...nothing you are going to notice with every day use.
Fit of the product was spot on, Installation was a breeze. the protector could be a little thicker so the camera "ring" isn't touching the surface, but I'm pretty sure that would hinder the clearity. as it sits, the protector is right about level with the metal camera ring.
overall I am pleased, and like the title says, Weston just wanted me to Gauge interest for the product. No word on pricing or anything, just trying to get the word out on these and see if it would be worth it for SW to start mass producing them.
let me know what you think! also any comments/criticism are welcome.
I would possibly be interested in this. Depends on pricing. I can just see the lens cover getting scratched up easily without something protecting it leaving you with sub par pictures, not that it takes great pictures to begin with.
unless there like 2 bucks with shipping i dont see why anyone wouldn't just get a full phone case. with one the camera is so where near touching any surface.
A protector for your camera lens is pointless as most, if not all, high end phones use sapphire glass which has a 9H rating and much stronger than the glass on your display. The only thing that can scratch it is a diamond and given the amount of pressure it would take to break it, your phone would get crushed before it does.

It'd depend on how it attached, but I might be interested in this kind of thing. I'd much rather have my keys nick this than the lens proper.

I don't always do everything correctly, and the day I'm carrying a second set or have my hands full and forget what is where needn't be a day that i nick a lens.
In fact, the not doing it right every time is why I bought this phone. Very hard to brick a device when you have full manufacturer's images!
I'd probably try those. I'd prefer a case that had a lens cap built in but I can't find any like that. I'd just be concerned that the lens protector would degrade quickly and affect picture quality, bu your example photos look pretty good.

I am also concerned with how it would hold up, but I am assuming this is very similar to the material screen protectors are made out of... Which is pretty good usually needing to be replaced every 6 months or so max.
I have been really abusing it just to see how it holds up (trying to scratch it with a button, constantly wiping it down (not necessary its just a habit...finger prints don't show up as much with it installed) with my cotton shirt and it still looks great.
But like I said, Weston is shipping me some more of a different material so we'll see how those work out
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
Extremeguard selling the back protector with it, kind of, you just need to trim that piece a little
I'll buy some. It's not about whether the camera is made of sapphire or not, it's about me trying to protect my phone against the perils of my daily life haha. Though I take care of then phone as it is, a simple protector like that is one more layer of added protection. Just in case I do something stupid to it

Nexus 5 does not have any corning gorilla glass or any glass that is 9H for the camera, I could be wrong but it isn't specified on the specs such as the iPhone 5C having that sapphire lens cover to prevent scratchings.
I actually still have the lens protector that came with the phone and never removed it, cause it's so hard when I tried. But pics look great nevertheless.

If anything else you can replace it by removing the back cover and unscrewing the top half its a complete assembly

The lens protector that came with the phone doesn't actually cover the lens. It is a 2D donut and has a hole punched out in the middle where the lens opening is. At least, that was the case for mine.

Yes and it would be great if @slickwraps does exactly the same with their design, i mean punching a hole in the middle. In that case the quality of the photos won't be affected either.

Anyone notice the back discolor just from your hand oil?

I have the black and this is the first phone I'm going to use naked. Love how it feels in the hand, love the minimal form factor. What I don't love is how the plastic back reacts to hand oil. I've just been using the phone for few days and already the back seems permanently stained/discolored on the spots where my hand/fingers typically rest. Anyone else with black or another color notice this? Seems like black may show it more.

I've noticed it on the ice. I don't mind it though. Not yet anyways
Edit: and its not a color difference but rather a sheen difference. It reflects light differently so it has to be at a certain angle in light to notice
The original nexus 5 did this too, just the nature of the soft touch beast. Just take your shirt and wipe it off.

Yup (on the black), in a way it does, and the end result looks similar. But on my Ice it can't be wiped away. I don't know about the other 5X colors.
I'm good with it though. It's very hard to see unless in perfect light.
Same here, thank god the back of this phone isn't too hard to replace. I can get it pretty clean with a good scrubbing.

What is phone cleaner I've never heard of it? (I'm serious)
Every now and then I just use a Clorox wipe or other disinfectant wipe. And no it doesn't remove the different sheen caused from wear. For my Ice it's not the oils by itself, I think it's partly that but more the wear of the plastic. Just a guess though
edit: I'll try to capture a pic soon showing what I see on my Ice. And Jack, OP, could you cap a pic and show what you're seeing?

I've had my ice 5x for 2 weeks. I noticed it few days ago
My sheen started wearing on the first day, it's not a big deal to me as long as the sides don't wear also; probably just put a skin on it anyway. My Hammerhead never showed any signs of fading and it was caseless and cleaned alot.

My hands tend to be clammy all the time but so far everything is wiping off. Doesn't wipe off as easily as other devices though.
Yes I also have only been using the phone naked for two weeks and just received my diztronic revision 2 case. Before I applied the case I too tried to wipe down the back but is does appear to be permanently wear and discoloration and after only 2 weeks use. I've never had this problem with any phone before. It didn't happen to my nexus 5

I have the full matte black diztronic revision 2. It's perfect. I've been using diztronic on all my devices for years I usually wait till the second revision cause alot of first run cases have cut outs missing or miss aligned as was the case with the 1st missing a mic hole but this revision 2 is perfect. Slim profile but good protection. Lip on the front edges so you can put it face down without damaging your screen. All my cuts outs are perfectly aligned. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0176...+diztronic&dpPl=1&dpID=417mnqo3doL&ref=plSrch

Its annoying, other phones don't do this, the M9 was terrible for it, seems it's followed over to the 10.
try cleaning the lens.

Dang i've noticed that it helps a lot but it's still a bit bad. Mine doesn't seem to be quite as bad as yours.
This can be easily solved (for me at least) by rubbing the lens with a soft cloth in a circular motion rather than linearly.
Do you have clear case on?

Appreciate what you're saying, I have a large zags cloth which is probably one of the best cloths that you can buy. The lens is clear..
Mine has the same glare issue. Maybe it can be fixed with a anti glare or a polarizing flim/glass ?

Hadn't thought about that, it's just a shame that htc didn't actually realise that this is an old problem which they really ought to have fixed.

It may look clean but shine the lens at different angles and you'll see oil streaks. For sure that's what it is based on the glare. The same exact thing happens with glasses.

I'll give it another whirl but I'm not used to that much glare from any device.

Glass is always like that and every camera or item with glass whether glasses, shower doors, windows will always do that. For example my glasses and DSLR do that if you touch them. It's normal but strange that many HTC owners are raising awareness on that like LCD and polarization.

Because it's not just the glass causing the issue.

But it is. Unless other phone manufacturers are making some kind of glass with enduroshield that even camera brands like Nikon and Canon aren't using.
Check out my sample and example in the camera thread.

Unless it's exactly the same glass as the m9 which had the exact same issue then i'm not convinced.
My Nexus didn't have this, my S5, infact pretty much none of the below phones did except for the 3 new HTC devices.
If it's glass, then how does that happen? The vast majority of these were glass, the 10 just seems to be hazy, especially in low light, bring the device outside and it's crystal clear, feels like dejavu of the m9 to me.
Might sound like i'm bashing HTC here, i'm not, i'm a bit disappointed, i've always put a lot of faith in HTC and they always seem to drop the ball on something. Suppose that's HTC's way of being unique.

No lad, there's nothing wrong with the phone its just the way it is in certain lighting.

What is the giant bottom bezel for?

What is the function of the bottom bezel if navigation buttons are on screen? obviously Google would have made the screen bigger or phone smaller if the bezel was just blank space... so what is its function then?

The tear down will answer this question. There is always some sort of electronics down there, just a matter of how much. is in there.
hopefully a lot or else that is very disappointing... I wish they at least added a home button or a finger print sensor there at least for aesthetics

The Pixel is built off of the HTC A9 frame, HAS to be. Just look at the damn thing.

Here is the Pixel when some leaks first started to happen. The two sensors have been moved but their the same size and shape. There is also a little blur down at the bottom, might be covering a button of some kind.
A9 or htc10 frame
I like the bottom bezel. I know I'm the minority though.
On my Nexus 6P, the bottom of the screen is too low to reach comfortably, in my opinion.

Wish they would have went with the rear of the HTC 10.
Or just a phone with very rounded corners. Possible they just like the style. Antennae array is in the back under the glass I heard so that seems different then the other HTC phones. The camera is at the top but in the corner also.
Waiting for a device break down and we will see how close it is. I do not really care for the large Bezels either but I suppose they have a reason.

I agree, I'm currently using a 2014 Nexus 6 and the thin bottom bezel makes it so I have to reach too far downward to press the on screen nav buttons, which makes for very uncomfortable use
Judging by hands on reviews of these Pixel phones, it looks like the big bottom bezel keeps the users thumbs in alignment with the nav buttons, which probably leads to more comfortable use, especially when using the phone in one hand.
I agree they could of done more with the bottom bezel, like add a speaker or something. Hopefully they at least made good use of that space internally

You are right, they do look similar in some ways. Judging by the comparisons picture that I added to this post, the bezels are thinner on all sides of the Pixel phones when compared to the A9. The sensor window is the same shape but seems to be a little bigger on the Pixel.
The backside of the Pixel is obviously different and if you turn the Pixel sideways, the Pixel starts out thin on the bottom and becomes thicker at the top, which the A9 doesn't.
So there are some differences and if they did start out with a A9 template then Google modified it to their own liking.

I'm waiting to buy it after the masses already get theirs and some trusted reviews post videos. I'm waiting for MKBHD and Flossy Carter.

Good idea, I hear people are already doing unboxing videos today, so reviews shouldn't be too far away.
Edit - Turns out those unboxing videos are old and not from today, my bad.

Comparison videos are what I really want to see. MKBHD is a little too focused on the camera on any phone, while Flossy actually buys the devices he reviews, and always compares them to whatever else he has.
If you haven't seen his stuff, you should watch his Real Reviews, which are like 45 minutes to an hour...and hilarious. Plus, he's a huge black dude from New York.

You know you could buy the device yourself and have 30 days to return it for a full refund right? Why let others influence your decision... the phone isn't going to be bad by any means, so there is nothing to worry about there.
