The title basically says it all. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any live wallpapers that can trigger the dark ui.
So far the only ones i know about are "Amoled" and "Galaxy", both by the same developer maxelus.net. They're very nice wallpapers with a lot of customization options. So if you guys know of any others please share.

I haven't found any so far. Only the dark Google ones that are in the Wallpaper app trigger it, there's like 5 of them that do it. Any 3rd party live wallpaper I've tried that is dark, does not trigger it.

You should give the ones I mentioned a shot. There's free versions of both, but you gotta be on 8.1 for the dark mode to work though.
The darker wallpapers in tapet trigger the dark theme, but I've found even with just setting an image they have to be very dark before triggering this....
Attached a dark wallpapers generated by tapet, and a fairly dark black and white image that didn't trigger it.
Seems to need a certain amount of black to switch to dark..
*Edit* first screenshot since getting the 2xl, screenshots have square edges behind the round corners....

Is that a live wallpaper or app that displayed all that info on your home screen?

Hi guys,
I've been using the AOSPUI black theme on my Nexus 6P and it worked fine on Nougat.
I now have a Pixel 2 XL on stock rooted Oreo 8.1. The same theme behaves in a weird way and some pop-up windows and the power menu have black on black text. I reached out to the dev and he says it should work properly but I can't seem to be able to make it work.
Now I'm looking for another black theme that works flawlessly on stock rooted. Found a few but need some advice, so would you get:
- Swift black,
- Pi Dark,
- Flux,
- something else?
I need a black theme where EVERYTHING works. Free themes are also welcome.
Thanks!

Swift Black works for me very well. But the first time you install a theme, you can run into weird problems because the theme hasn't been updated for the newest version of the Google apps yet.
When I did a clean install last week, Swift Black wouldn't theme my Google app. An update a few days later fixed this.
So I disable automatic updates and wait for a Swift Black update after the apps which I have themed are updated. This way it alsways works with Swift Black.
But to theme GBoard, you need to read the FAQ (some manual steps are required).
Hope that helps.

Domination is another outstanding black theme that gets updated regularly. Also, keep in mind that it's ok to use overlays from different themes on certain apps while your waiting for theme updates should your base theme not work on a particular app :good:
Swift black FTW

I use Swift Black for system UI and settings, Compound for phone. Swift Black leaves a huge blue frame on the dialer UI for me. Looks horrid.

I don't theme Google apps actually. My problem is with the "Android system" overlay on my theme.

Like I said above, the only overlay that gives me trouble is the "Android system" one. If I activate it (black with Pixel accent colors), my pop-up windows are black on black and my power menu blue on blue, i.e. I can't see any text. It's odd, it worked well on Nougat.
Edit: I wonder if it's the automatic (and stupid) day/night mode from Oreo that's being a PITA? Because my current wallpaper is dark and it triggers the dark mode for some stuff. Why did Google add this and not a toggle to enable/disable it?!

I think the only elements that are affected by the wallpaper theme (auto dark/light mode) are quick settings and notification bar.

It also themes the power menu, which is one of the areas that don't get themed properly. I also switched to a light wallpaper and all my QS were gone (probably black on black again)! Something is definitely fishy on Oreo :/

I don't have the issue you describe using Swift Black for system.
Same here, I'm 100% stock using swift black and couldn't be happier. No issues at all.
I'm guessing Swift Black is the winner here!
About the power menu, it's actually the advanced power menu that isn't themed properly (the one added by Gravity Box through Xposed). And also random pop-up windows like when I'm connecting a Bluetooth device.
I use Spectrum as my main theme. Domination is my second theme and is used to theme apps that Spectrum doesn't, such as XDA Labs. It also is used for the Google apps when Spectrum can't theme the app, though that can be hit or miss. For example, Photos cannot be changed to black by either theme at the moment.
Google seems to update their apps every other day, which gives the themers headaches. Of course, in Android P it may all end up being moot.
PitchBlack is my go theme... Updates regularly and plenty options..

After posting this I thought to myself, hope I didn't jinx myself....fast forward to now, 4 updates later to both substratum engine/swift black.... contacts and phone are not theming...I'm sure it'll be fixed soon but funny how that works. Anyone else having same problem?

Are you creating the modules then rebooting before applying? Since March update that's what you need to do. The modules will show up after rebooting.

I'm creating the overlays using the "build & update" option then rebooting and applying them. If you don't reboot, they don't show up in the Substratum manager.
Right now, I'm waiting to get a payment from Rewards so I can buy one theme or two. We'll see.

I disabled all overlays, rebooted, everything was stock theme. Did build and enable for swift black, rebooted, (twice) everything but contacts and phone is themed. Did this quickly this morning before work, maybe a error on my part. Will try again tonight.

I would delete the overlays before rebuilding them.
On my Pixel 2 XL stock (Not Rooted) I still have to Build/Enable and then reboot and enable again. Does anyone else have this issue? I should not need to "Enable" overlays twice.

Now that you mention it, I'm almost positive I did delete and not disable. Either way I'll check it out later, thanks for the advice.
Hello
I hate the white background in Google app is there a way to change the background to dark or just something other than white?

Not according to this...
https://www.theverge.com/2018/2/23/17045944/android-phone-dark-mode-update-promised
(apparently they did it accidentally once, but it was unintentional, and so put it back to only having a light mode).
That said, apparently lots of users liked it, so you never know, they might bring one out,
(and this article suggests that this may indeed be happening...)
https://thenextweb.com/apps/2018/02/23/google-android-dark-mode-night/
But currently it doesn't exist yet on the mobile version of google chrome. (so don't waste your time looking for a setting for it, as it isn't there)

Use swift black theme and theme the Google app.
Stock android still doesn't have a dark theme? Found it in the options but doesn't seem to do anything. The dialer and settings still have a white background. We've got OLED panels with true black. Think Google will ever get around to it? Who wants to stare at a bright white light?

Yes same here. Why does Google have the option when it doesn't work lol
Google is rolling out dark theme on a per app basis. They have it for YouTube and Android Messages now. Apparently it's coming to Google Phone soon (Dialer and contacts). Dark theme definitely makes the notch stand out less.
Hope they do the phone and settings soon.
used to be able to do this a few android versions ago with substratum. there was a theme called aosp dark which was great. I find the stock instagram dark mode hard on the eyes it's so black. i've trawled around looking at current substratum themes but nothing so far. my p6p is rooted.
Check out this post
Substratum + Swift Dark Theme (same colour as other Google apps when using dark mode). See screenshot.
I use this to theme Whatsapp, Instagram, Twitter, Google Files app ... now at least 95% of my apps have the same 'dark' colour and are 'consistent' in terms of UI color.
I have also set debug.hwui.force_dark=true at boot time to turn a few light apps into dark.
Only exception is strava ... white is king for strava.

thank you so much for this! I had given up hope of finding a solution. makes a huge difference.
edit: were you able to get that theme to work for google maps? not working here at the moment. really annoying that the stock dark theme also turns the map dark.
