G7 Thinq won't connect to LTE on T-mobile...help - LG G7 ThinQ Questions & Answers

I just got a brand new international version of the G7 Thinq, it is the international version, with 128gb and 6gb ram.
I'm able to connect to T-mobile and make calls etc, but it won't connect to LTE even though I've been using LTE for years in my area with no issue on old phone.
T-Mobile support was not able to help me.
The highest it connects is 4g
I really do not want to return this phone to the seller, but I don't want to settle for a phone that can't connect to LTE like my old one.
Willing to try anything...any ideas?
Thanks

4G is LTE.

Do you have this phone and live in a LTE area? My old phone actually said "LTE" for the signal when it connected with LTE, are you saying this model phone does not actually say "LTE" on the signal bar?
Can anyone confirm that this phone says "LTE" at the top with an LTE signal?

I have this phone and I'm aware of that.
4G *IS* LTE.
You need to google what LTE is.
occasionally you will see 4G+ (downloading).

I just googled it and I've read 3 sites so far that says they are not the same.....
https://www.tccrocks.com/blog/what-is-difference-between-4g-and-4g-lte/
I'm not trying to start an argument. I'm just used to my phone displaying LTE and if you are saying this model does NOT display LTE, and displays a "4G" instead, then that answers my question. Some sites even say HSPA+ is 4g, and I know that is different than LTE.

On tmobile he is correct 4g is hspa+.. My g7 says 4g lte when on lte.. Did you do a network reset? Or call tmobile and ask then to redo your phone activation to make sure you register on there network right.. Maybe need a newer sim?

Check the APN settings

It's possible that the APN settings may need to be tweaked. I'd start there.

Mine says 4G+. Figured that was LTE.
and 4G (without 4G)+ is not LTE?

I've called T-Mobile, had them do a restart, had them check APN, etc.
I'm using the same sim as my old phone that gets LTE just fine, so it's not that.
I'm thinking something about this international version maybe doesn't support one of the bands or frequencies that T-Mobile uses in Chicago (even though it says it supports GSM worldwide)
I'm probably going to send it back as my 3 year old Motorola phone gets a higher tested download speed on a speed test than this new one without LTE. Just wanted to check if anyone else had the issue. Thanks

T-Mobile uses LTE bands 2, 4, 12, 66, 71, while the G710EAW, which I assume is the model you've bought, supports bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 28, 38, 39, 40, 41 - so none of the TMob LTE bands.
There are six variants of the G7, G710EAW is aimed at Asia/Oceania and together with the G710EMW (64GB/8GB single-sim version of your variant) the only one that doesn't support at least two of the TMob LTE bands.
Sorry, hope you'll find a nice replacement

This is what I was afraid of. But I specifically purchased this model because it had the 128gb, the extra 2gb RAM, and dual-sim....I'll have to research if this is available in one of the models you mentioned but so far I've only seen the 64gb with single sim so I guess I'll have to find a new model. Thanks for the info.

I have the G710EAW and it most CERTAINLY supports bands 2 and 4.
It's even labeled DIRECTLY on the box itself.
Don't get your information from the LG website. The site only shows which bands are used IN THAT REGION, not what is supported by hardware.

Don't believe everything you hear on the internet. Bands 2 and 4 are supported.
These are the bands supported by the G710EAW.
GSM: 850/900/1800/1900
WCDMA: 850/900/1700/1800/1900/2100
TD-SCDMA: 1900/2000
LTE: B1/B2/B3/B4/B5/B7/B8/B12/B13/B17/B20/B28/B38/B39/B40/B41
If a band is NOT supported, trying to select it will show "FAIL" in the engineering menu.
Example: band 25 is shown, but not supported. This will show FAIL.
It was the international LG G6 which had problems with T-mobile, as Band 2 was not supported (shown in service menu, if you select it it shows 'FAIL'.)
I sold one of these phones (I had 2) to a T-mobile user and he's happy.

I have also the 128 GB lg g7 eaw version. My phone shows 4g also. The speed test i have done is 60mbps both up and down and i am ok with that.

My G710EAW shows 4G+. Uaing Net10 on band 2 which uses tmobile's servers. I think each and every person here needs to stop crying wolf. Seriously.
If the US version shows LTE and the international version shows 4G+ I mean who cares if its the same damn thing?
https://www.4g.co.uk/news/what-is-4g-plus-ee/
4G+ is another name for LTE-A, LTE-Advanced or 4.5G and it’s basically a faster version of 4G. It works through carrier aggregation, which allows 4G phones to receive data from multiple bands in the 4G spectrum.
So while standard 4G only uses one band at a time, 4G+ can combine two bands for increased speeds. In EE’s case it’s the 1800MHz and 2.6GHz bands which are being combined

The information is from gsmarena. They have been spot on with this kind of information the last times I checked. However, it seems like they're off with the G7. I just compared my variant with their information and it's off as well. Thanks for catching this!
So in that case I can only think of one reason why the OPs phone would not connect to TMobile 4G: the network in your area is using bands that are not supported by your G7. However, this is quite unlikely, since these would be 66/71. From what I read, they have only been introduced in 2017.

T-Mobile bands...

I'm VERY concerned about buying this phone now. T-Mobile have only listed LTE bands 4 & 17 on their site.
International
Quad Band GSM; LTE: 4, 17; UMTS: Band I (2100), Band II (1900), Band IV (1700/2100), Band V (850)
What in the eff?
Des just answererd this question on Twitter: https://twitter.com/askdes/status/581568102015569920
It has:
GSM - 850/900/1800/1900
UMTS - B1/B2/B4/B5
LTE - B2/B4/B12/B17 with CA + B3/B7 roaming
This is the perfect T-Mobile phone.
So the T-Mobile version does not have 1700, and is therefore identical to the other models? Do we know if it includes wifi-calling, or if we would be able to flash the T-Mobile ROM onto the unlocked dev version?

It does have 1700! That's Band 4, and for both LTE and HSPA.
The T-Mobile version also supports WiFi calling and texting. I have no idea if the T-Mobile firmware can be flashed to the unlocked version, but I don't see why it wouldn't be feasible.

T-Mobile (Des) confirmed: 2, 3, 4, 7, 12, and 17
AT&T lists: 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 17, and 29 (adds +5 and +29)
HTC Dev & Unlocked versions (per HTC on Twitter): 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, 29, 30 (adds +5, +13, +29, +30)
Maybe the T-Mo phone supports more that could be unlocked, who knows. The extra bands aren't useful to me.
Sorry, but I just want to clarify.
Do all versions of this phone support BAND IV UMTS or not?

HTC has done this on the past couple of phones. Only the T-Mobile phone will do their specific bands (HSPA+). On past models I don't recall anyone getting the ATT/DEV models to work with those T-Mobile bands. I don't believe we ever found out why. Some speculated it was due to cost to license all the bands, or that it is actually different hardware. The M7 and M8 were both like that.
If you are on T-Mobile, I'd get the model specifically for them.

Oh yeah I remember my Dev version being like that. Fortunately, I live in an area that has been upgraded to mostly lte. This was actually beneficial for me and maybe others in the same situation because it actually saves battery life when the phone isn't constantly switching between edge, 3g/+, and lte. I'm sure many others have been in an area that's barely out of lte but still within h+ range and it's still slow as edge or even slower.

Yes, it is OK if you live in a major area that has lots of LTE. Here just north of LA, I get into the other bands pretty frequently.
I am not sure this was answered? Do all versions of the HTC one m 9 support band 4 UMTS? Many ATT carrier unlocked models are for sale and no one seems to know if they will pick up the UMTS 1700 band 4 on T- Mo?

They will not pick up the T-Mobile specific bands, which use 1900/2100 for 41bps speed. They will work with the T-Mobile LTE band.
Wow, still a mystery. I have the AT&T SIM Unlocked One M9 and I have a TMobile prepaid SIM and get Edge, 3G, 4G, LTE Band 2,4,12...I cannot find an app that shows the actual WCDMA (4G) Bands ? But, it notates 42 MBPS when it says HSPA+ 4G using Network Signal Info-Pro App..and also shows 384 Kbps when it says 3G....
So, seems Des is correct unless the Network Signal Info Pro app is wrong?
I turned off everything except WCDMA, and this is what I get being reported by LTE Discovery. HSPA+ @ -113. I have a ATT unlocked M9. I do have the T-Mobile 2.11.531.19 firmware installed as well as the T-Mobile rom.
Using XDA to unleash the power of Android on my HTC One M9
Thanks but as I mentioned I cannot find an App that shows the WCDMA Bands to confirm. As you can see even LTE Discovery says N/A for DL and UL Freq...when on WCDMA...
The only App I can see that helps is Network Signal Info Pro...and unfortunately it is limited and shows me the below in my market;
HSPA+ 42.2 MBPS
HSDPA 7.2 MBPS
UMTS 386 KBPS
But, does not indicate which Band or Frequency ?
Anyone know of an App or Command that will show WCDMA Bands???

Check Settings - Mobile Network settings - Preferred Network Type and set it to LTE if you have this option and is not already set.
But I doubt that this is your problem. You bought the Taiwanese phone, didn't you? While OnePlus supports all ATT LTE bands (17, 4, 2), the Taiwanese Zenfone 2 doesn't support band 17 (nor ww model), which is otherwise typical for less inhabited aeries in the USA, but it seems that is widely used by ATT. Try the phone in the downtown or another city and you'll probably catch the LTE on other frequencies.
Yes I purchased it from Taiwan but all of the sites show so many bands for this phone. Asus does a terrible job with their model numbers. There are so many different versions with the same model number. There is a 4 g setting not lte and that is selected. I did pick up 4g while driving through part of the city.
Is there going to be a US model?
Thank you
Yes. There is a US model and its supposed to be released in the next month or so. The link below, click on specs, shows the LTE bands for each region. Clearly shows the Taiwanese model not having the 17 band.

That stinks. I took that page as it will work in all of these markets. Oh well
Thanks

The topic is about bands not frequencies. There is nothing such as 1700 LTE band. Actually both USA and TW phones work on approximate LTE 700 MHz but bands are different because uplink and downlink are different. So TW model works on band 28 and US one on 17.

It's not that simple. Luckily Intel chip supports all LTE bands. But they must be activated in kernel too. Maybe someone will find the method to activate the missed ones. Otherwise you are not so bad. With TW phone you are short of only one LTE band of four major in the USA, Europeans missed 2 of 3.

Frequency wise is matches everything AT&T needs, i just picked up my 4g/64gb TW model, i'll be playing with apn's to see if i can get lte to pop. Only getting H+ so far.
Correction, shipped with WW firmware, no 700mhz for us.
More - As posted above, this Taiwanese version is missing the LTE band 17. And there are some areas that this may be the only band available, so you will not have LTE in those situations.
Thanks so much.... I was having a heck of time here with my Zenfone 2 in Tucson AZ on T-mobile.... I was stuck on 2G... but updating the APN to fast.t-mobile.com and 2 reboots seems to have done the trick. So glad I don't have to EBAY this! THANKS AGAIN.... Loving this thing so far!
Well ****! This is where I am stuck win H+ on ATT.
No way around this huh unless someone does a new rom? Or is it hardwired?

Q on LTE Bands of VZW G4

Has anyone tested out an AT&T SIM card in a Verizon variant of the G4? I'd really like an android phone that has LTE bands for both AT&T/VZW to swap back and forth with my iPhone. The VZW Nexus 6 worked great, but it was just too clunky for me.
Thanks in advance for the help!
AT&T uses two main bands for LTE, bands 5 and 17. They also use bands 2/4/29/30 depending on the market.
The Verizon G4 supports these bands according to Verizon: 2/4/13, and these bands according to other research I found online: 2/4/5/7/13.
If that's true, it sounds like you should be able to get some LTE in most markets, but you would be limited as the only bands you could get LTE on would be 2/4/5.
Thanks for your help!

Ok. Thanks. I was also reading verizon support web site and it shows network mode menu with the option LTE/UMTS/GSM available. Probably people that is reporting only edge with Tmo is maybe because they are in areas where 3G is at 1700/2100. This phone has only 850,900,1900,2100.

Verizon tends to only publish bands that they use as available on phones. For instance it says the VS986 only works on LTE bands 2, 4, and 13.

Is there a model of the g7 that will work well on at&t?

I'm on red pocket for the next year with At&t and would like to pickup a g7. Since they are not releasing a At&t varaint, anyone know if another model will work well, ie support most of lte bands? I'm struggling to find info. Thanks!
LG-G710UL Which is the unlocked variant. Don't know if it's available for purchase yet but that's what I'm using for work and AT&T sim works without issue on LTE.

Please can you kindly make a screenshot of it on att and do a speedtest internet speed on the app?i appreciate it.
Because I asked 5 sellers on ebay on this model and they said it is not fully compatible and no return with regards to bands not compatible.
I have the LM-G710TM (T-Mobile) unlocked and have 4G LTE according to the status bar logo using the Nxtgen APN

WiFi calling does not work on the TM version...at least on the stock TMo software from what I've seen

I had to have ATT properly provision my phone by calling tech support. At first when I setup the phone it provisioned VoLTE but not the other services. I was able to check *#*#4636#*#* to see WiFi Calling wasn't provisioned until we formally updated the IMEI.
Unlike previous HTC devices where I had to spoof another device IMEI in order to activate services like VoLTE and HDVoice but still didn't get WiFiCalling, this time everything turned on like butter. I get seamless call transfer from WiFi to Network as well.
I did install "Carrier Services" from the play store but I think that is more for RCS and Project Fi support.
Well I got the 710ulm. It was 3g only for a day or two, then Lte kicked in once redpocket servers realized I switch phones. So far so good something about 80mb download speed for $18/month makes me happy.

Did U buy it from B&H? There is one thing that bothers me.. LTE Band 12. Does this phone really have it?
On official LG page for unlocked model G7 Thinq it says: LTE Bands 2/4/5/7/13/20/28/46/66
OTOH B&H says: LTE: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 17, 20, 25, 26, 28, 40, 41, 46, 48, 66 Bands
So where is the true?
I want a black model to use on T-Mobile (they do not offer black model) and Band 12 is really important.
Can U or someone else who has this model (LMG710ULM) confirm Band 12? TIA

Purchased from BestBuy. B+H didn't have theirs yet.
No idea on Band 12. I'm on ATT and it works without issue with advanced services.
If it's a mission critical need for you, reach out to LG directly to confirm. That way it's not speculation, but actual fact.
