WTF is Top Shot? - Google Pixel 3 XL Questions & Answers

I have motion set to on and the latest version of Google Photos. Yet I just get the standard view all option. No suggested shots. Anyone know what's up? I even tried the version of Google Photos going around that enables Top Shot on the Pixel 2, but it still doesn't work.

When looking at the picture swipe bottom to top (up) you'll see a stream of photos at the bottom of the info. Tap on them and If the pic sucks the app will try to recommend the right ones for you.
Took me a minute to get it myself but now it is easy and helps a lot when I'm taking pictures of my 18 month old. Lol
Hope that helps!

I know all this. But after swiping up, I don't get any recommended shots. Ever. Just the usual timeline where you click "view all". It shows you a bunch of shots, with the original photo marked with a dot, but it doesn't jump to a recommended photo.

Had that problem too, this sounds counterintuitive but try to take a blurry picture, as in shake your hands while taking a picture. I noticed that too shot only works when it "detects" the photo was bad in the first place. What constitutes bad, from my experimentation, has been blurry photos, when someone is moving to put their hand up so you don't get a shot of them (lol), and sometimes when the phone thinks the photo is "bad".
Took me a while before it really started working so I forced it by taking really bad blurry photos while motion was on.
Hopefully this helps you to get it working. I found it a bit fustrating at first cause I couldn't get it to work either but a little experimentation, research, and patience worked out. Lol

Thanks, but what about blinking? I thought that was one of the main uses. That's how I've been testing. Blinking or just looking away from the camera real quick to get a blurry shot. Nothing works.
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

Hmmmm, haven't had luck on the blinking. The best way to test it to see if it is "working" is to take a bad shot. My first test was to take a picture and while I was doing so I moved the phone to cause a blurry picture.
I just went through my own gallery using Google photos app and there are a ton of pictures that could have used too shot but didn't. Try taking several purposely bad photos and see if you can work it from there.
I don't think it's you or the phone but rather the phone doesn't think there is anything wrong with the pictures you are taking. ?
I will say that it's getting better over time, as in it seems to be able to recognize that a picture that I took needs to be corrected with the more photos I take.

since google hasnt officially released it, I wouldn't expect it to be working correctly, if at all yet.

Yeah, like I said, I've taken plenty of purposefully blurry photos. But all I get is "view all" instead of "recommendations". I have no idea how to get this working. At all.

Sucky, not sure what else to say other than the tier I list of, check for updates, reboot, and try again.
I find it real strange that it's not working for you. ?

Photosphere... Tips for a perfect shot needed! +poll

Hey Guys,
As the Title says. I need tips for taking sphere photos.
I tried it a few times but it fail's... it looks stuttery and ugly. sometimes after rendering, there are "black holes" where pictures were before it has rendered.
So, what do you for good photo spheres and can you post a link to G+ for some examples of acceptable shots (don't uplad it here. It breaks the spher view)?
I will update this post after I get some tips
I had a few good ones I lost because I formatted everything on my phone. Anyways the best tips I can share that always got me good shots are;
-Good lighting!
-Complete the entire 360° sphere
-Keep the phone at a consistent level.
--for example, don't hold the phone chest level when shooting evenly, near your chin when shooting upwards & down by your belly when shooting downward. Keep it at an even level at all times and just aim it in the direction you need.
-Take your time. Keep your movements steady. Try not to get a "Too Fast" message through the entire sphere.
I did shoot some really good ones, too bad I didn't back them up. I'll try to capture a few in a few hours and post them here.
Keep the lens side as still as possible while pivoting the speaker side or tilting it. Greatly reduced tearing and improved stitching
Added a shot taken from my balcony. the left end has a little tear though

my suggestions,
go SLOW,
use the "back" arrow if you go too fast.
try to keep the horizon (if you can see it) level throughout.
if you are doing a partial photosphere, start at one end...DO NOT start in the middle.
dont take enclosed photospheres....vary rarely do indoor photospheres work well. outdoors with some distance between you and objects give the best results.
here are some links to a couple of mine on Google Plus.

Love your shots!
Never mind. I figured it out.
The primary thing to keep in mind is to keep the LENS as spatially stationary as possible. Rotating around the lens (vs rotating your body) will get you much better results. If you move the lens, you change the perspective and this will cause stitching errors (look up parallax error). The closer the subject is to the lens, the more pronounced the problem becomes. If you're shooting landscapes at a long distance, you don't have to worry nearly as much about it (although you should still try to maintain position as much as possible!) as you do if you're shooting something like an indoor scene.
Frankly, without a tripod and a special head to keep position, I don't think it's feasible to get a perfectly stitched full 360 -- you'd have to be underneath your phone to take the highest level shots accurately.

Thanks for the idea! I've been using a GPS mount as an improvised tripod when I take pictures with the GNex. Just need to figure out how to get it to rotate smoothly on all axes with the lens as the center. Maybe strap the mount onto a tripod?

If it helps, this is the general idea I've had in my head. Excuse my sad drawing capabilities.
Basically the bottom would mount to a tripod that rotates around the center point. There would then be an inner hinge connected to handle vertical rotation (clamped to the phone at the center of the lens).

It seems the map app was updated. I can't upload photo sphere anymore with gallery share > maps. I can still upload it via G+ but I wish they have the map auto update soon.
Is there a way to upload in 3d? Viewable by others on their PCs perhaps? Or on mobile phones? How?

you can do it by mobile chrome browser in desktop mode as well.
Move the phone with calm and stability. Try to keep the same "level", it greatly decreases the likelihood of distortions in the final result.
- Don't try indoors it wont work, objects are too close and the lighting varies a lot. Perhaps with a standard that keeps the lens at the exact same position but turns it around like the one described before?
- Keep the same level
- Make sure you move slow when a dot is approaching.
- Prevent any moving objects from being photographed
You can only upload to maps if you have taken atleast 360degrees worth of pictures. At least that's what I think. So if it's say only from left to right and not behind, you can't upload to maps.
Can anyone corroborate this?
If you want the best results, then you want the centre of your lens to be in the same position in space for each picture.
This means rotating your phone through the axis of the lens, which is at the top of the camera.
The further things are away, the less significant this becomes.

Affirm, have been trying for two days to do one with 180 degree rotation left to right and no maps option. Just tried a 360 degree one (and up and down too), and it gave me the option to upload to Maps and has gone straight through.
Not sure how long it takes to get to Google Maps though.

Blurry Camera

Whenever I try taking a picture it takes a few tries to get it right and not blurry. I noticed many people have not had this problem as there aren't many posts about it but I find it annoying. I am coming from an HTC Sensation and that phone didn't have this problem. I think the blurriness is caused by the slight movement caused when tapping the shoot button. I also noticed that when taking photos with voice commands this problem doesn't show. I already have it on auto focus mode so can anyone tell me what else I can do? Just got it and was trying not to root or flash for awhile at least.
Have you tried gong into your camera settu ng and turned on anti-shake on? Is your lens dirty? Have you dropped your phone? If so you may have jarred something lose...try those first ones and see if that fixes the problem.

Anti-shake should definitely be on. But also, instead of tapping the shutter button, hold it down until you get the beep and green autofocus box on your target. Then, when you release the button, the shot is taken. Much less blur inducing vibration in that motion rather than in tapping. It's amazing the manual doesn't even mention that. "Burst shot" also sometimes yields good results. More pics to sort through later on in that mode, but multiple pics taken all at once increases your chances of finding a more desirable and less blurry shot out of the bunch. Good luck!
The autofocus is on and lens is clean. Also is there any way to make it so that autofocus can account for the camera tap? other than holding the button for a longer time? Any hacks?
Also holding the capture button longer doesn't always give clear shots

So in a situation where I am moving (ie. on a plane, in a car, bus, train) this camera is useless because the phone will not take good pix? I'm sorry if I sound like a brat or anything but a camera is important on a phone as that is my only camera. Maybe a rom can fix this or a hacked version of the camera?

Maybe I'll give it a little time to settle, I just did a factory reset and notice a little lag as well. I did transfer a lot of sms from my old phone using sms backup pro so maybe thats causing it? But hopefully a little time will fix if not then I will try factory resetting without restoring messages.

Filmed with Galaxy S3. The camera is not useless.

I'm also disappointed with the camera and don't think you're being a "brat" for expecting more from this phone. Seems like the optics might be poor quality...or maybe the CCD itself. Dunno. But hopefully I'm wrong and dev's can improve the camera's performance by modifying the software at some point. The "premium upgrade" that's due soon and already out for others is supposed to fix the cam's poor low-light capabilities(among other added features), so Samsung has already admitted there are real issues with the cam. If we're lucky the upgrade will fix the other cam related stuff too.
That said, there'll be plenty of people out there willing to argue their T999's take fine pictures...Wait, there's one now! Haha... But unless our particular phones are an exception to the rule, this cam pretty clearly(pun intended) has issues. I certainly wouldn't characterize the cam as "useless" though. In fact, I actually like the video it captures better than it's still photos. All focus, shake and grainyness issues aside, as long as you're prepared to do a little post-shot processing on still photos, the cam takes 'acceptable' quality pics, IMHO.
Of course it's possible we do have bad devices. In fact, I've had multiple issues with this S3(including something like the "lag" you mentioned, interestingly enough) and will have a replacement by early next week because of those issues. I'll let you know if my new phone takes better quality photos.
Hey just to update, my camera seems to have gotten better. I messed around with it and even turned off anti-shake and turned it back on. Maybe it was just me not being able to handle the bigger phone (not as comfortable to hold, well at least without practice). But Anvil Vapor try turning off anti-shake and turning it back on. Also mess around with the hdr mode and let box turn green on its own. Pictures are much better now.
Thanks everyone.

Glad to hear you're getting better results! Got my replacement S3 last Friday and have been comparing shots taken with the old and new cams. The replacement fixed every issue I was having with the phone, and it now performs more like I was expecting it to. But for me, holding and then releasing the shutter button to take the shot still captures less blurry pics than when letting it autofocus and tapping the shutter button. I do notice, though, that with the new camera HDR mode results in much less blurry pics than it used to(and maybe even less blurry than single-shot with anti-shake ON/OFF, now). So maybe the camera was bad in my old phone, or it had something to do with it's faulty mainboard. Dunno...
But for an 8MP phone camera, it's ok. And close up, macro pics look quite nice! :good:

[Q] Does the Note 3 have a terrible camera or do I have a defective unit?

Before upgrading to the Note 3 just a few days ago, I had a Galaxy SII for roughly a year and a half. I'm finding that the pictures taken on my Note 3 look awful in both day and low light settings.
I've tried the stock camera app, Vignette, Snap Camera, A Better Camera, Camera Zoom FX, and Camera FV-5 all which swear are the best camera apps. All pictures look like crap regardless of which app I use.
These are from my SII:

So what gives? When it wants to, it takes shots like the last above. When it doesn't, it doesn't. All pictures are unedited taken with auto mode. ISO and exposure settings have not been modified.
Bad module. I had the same problem, photos would not correctly focus. Exchanged it at tmobile, New one works much better. If you hand shakes the tiniest bit the auto focus goes crazy, that's why next one needs OIS.
I'd like to get more opinions please.
Definitely something wrong. The note 3 has one if the best cameras I've used yet on a phone.

My phone has been tack-sharp for the most part. I think 1 of every 8 or so might be blurry but its been really good so far. I've only had my Note 3 for 6 days but I've taken about 60 or pictures. I have not taken any night shots yet, just indoor/outdoor during the day.
Mine takes crappy pictures a lot as well, plus when filming, the slightest movement makes the autofocus go ape sh* and gets all grainy.
Again like you though, it takes great pictures and films when it wants to.

Hey there, I'm having the EXACT same problem with my new Note 3 and it's driving me nuts!
Just got it less than a week ago brand new from Best Buy (March 29).
I updated to KitKat OTA and everything is great EXCEPT the camera. The smart stabilization doesn't seem to do anything, it's always blurry unless it's super sunny and bright and I'm not moving at all.
I've been doing some research and it seems to be pretty common, about 50/50 of Note 3 owners complaining. Somebody mentioned that Samsung changed the image sensor in the later batches of the Note 3? Also some customers have exchanged their device and say the 2nd one works fine.
I'm gonna play with the settings some more but will likely go back to Best Buy tomorrow (April 4) to see if they have another one I can try.
BRB, Keep ya posted
Hope you don't mind me posting on here, but I also got a "camera is acting ****ty" question and it may be related.
I went from a Note II to Note III ... and taking a picture with this is horrible. I press the shutter button. It does the whole "took a pic" animation and then it says "Processing". If I move the phone while it's processing, it captures whatever is in front of the phone as I move it, as if it was taking the picture during "Processing" and not when it did the animation that indicates it took a picture.
Does that make sense? In essence it's ruined a bunch of shots because it's telling "hey I took the picture" and next thing I know, not, it hadn't taken the picture. And in the Note II I never had to wait for any "processing" like this one seems to do for every picture.
What gives?

I've had the blurry processing problem as well. Probably couldn't replicate it if I tried. Maybe it has to do with whether you are saving to sd card or internal memory?
Saving to my 64GB card that I used on the Note II without this issue.
Damn camera
Yeah same here as well. You have to take off stabilize shot and just take regular pics until someone can make a mod for it or Samsung gives us an update. You could go the other route and take smooth video and then playback and take pics from there. (^_-). I was and still am pretty pissed about this camera. It works sometimes but the whole processing thing is terrible. I too am coming from the note 2 and it had fantastic pics as does this note 3 it just does so when it wants. Be very still when taking pictures.
Thanks for the heads up. Took off the Smart Stabilization crap and now it works as I'd need it. I've done photography for a few years so I can keep a phone steady enough for a picture. The tradeoff of instant capture vs software stabilization with a delay is silly.

Note 3 camera much better WITHOUT Smart Stabilization, but you still need to hold VERY still.
The convenience of a cellphone camera isn't so convenient when it distorts your equilibrium

It still take a very long time to take the picture and save it.

Dust on rear camera

Hey Fairphoners,
I guess you've heard about the problem of having dust inside the phone and on the camera (see main fairphone post or https://fairphone.zendesk.com/hc/communities/public/questions/200997773-dust-inside-phone).
How are you dealing with this? I myself had to open my phone recently to clean it and now, a few weeks later, my camera can't focus again..
If many people are affected by this problem one could (and should) get in touch with the fairphone staff.
Greetings!
Bump!
I won't believe that no one else experienced this problem yet, so let me ask this: how many of you still use their cam since the beginning without having cleaned it.
Don't be so shy
I do, though it might be my low standards.

I did it yesterday after I finally got me the fitting tools.
It's way better again and the pictures are better. You see it best, when looking at details (I compared a dusty one with the cleaned one, when taking a picture from the same object)
But since then my microphoe is really almost silent. I have to speak really loud so the other side will hear me...
I did not do anything to the microphone...
Anyone an idea?
@Vinnl: So, did I get it right that your camera still focuses correctly (especially when you are close to the object)? Or did you mean that you are not really using the camera..?
@haiag: Hmm.. I did not experience nor hear about such a difference in the microphone sensitivity - maybe some of the connectors/connecting parts on the motherboard have been touched?

I don't know what "correctly" is, but most of the times is focuses, sometimes it doesn't, but I guess that is normal? I use it now and then, but not that extensively.
I got my FP1 in January and took a number of pictures since then (~700 or so). Never had problems, no dust, no focus issues, no red tinting. I even can't remember where I put my Casio Cam as the FP1 makes faster and better snapshots. But I think that won't help you anyway now, does it?
Argh, you guys have been lucky with the phone..
But thanks for the answers, 'cause any answer is better than no answer
PS: To test your focus just take a picture of a text and see if it's sharp/readable afterwards.
Mine can't focus a text on a piece of paper anymore.. Either it shows the red rectangle and it doesn't take the pic or the green one but then the pic is not readable/completely blurred (and I mean like *completely*)

This is what I get: https://i.imgur.com/0rAk4nS.png
(If I move the camera closer to the paper it cannot focus either, but I suppose that is to be expected at some point.)
^that looks good, compared to my pics

Snapchat Quality

I added some pictures to my Snap story and noticed the quality a lot less than my Note 7 and even my Note 5, but the worst part is for some reason the photo doesn't fill the whole screen.

Lol relax buddy. Maybe im just seeing if anyone else had this issue and also had a solution. Only reason for comparison is using another flagship as an example. I hope whatever has you so upset gets better ?
Would you be able to post Snapchat photos from your other phones to compare? When it comes to the Pixel/XL, what makes their photos stand out is the HDR+ mode. Stock photos don't look as good without it. Maybe that's what you're seeing through Snapchat.

That makes sense because snapchat on Android doesn't actually take photos, it does a screenshot of the lens finder.
Any idea why the photo wouldn't take up the whole screen, could this be due to the camera hardware specs. This is the first Android phone I've seen do that and not sure what's causing it

Pictures on my XL do take up the whole screen without any issues and as far as the photo quality is concerned I find it good

Could you screenshot and show me how it looks? My buddy got the LG V20 and it's doing the same thing, it fills 90% of the screen but the bottom and top there's a black bar
