Moto Z2 stuck at startup pattern - Moto Z2 Play Questions & Answers

Last night my phone got freeze and I decided to restart it, now when I turn it on the phone ask for a pattern before fully start, the problem is that when I put the pattern it doesn't work anymore, I'm not able to start the phone, when I put the pattern it stays for a long time in "cheeking" and finally fails, I have 3 more tries before it wipe everything.

Sadly not, the only way is just doing a factory reset?
I can't understand why the pattern doesn't work, I use it always.

I have no answer, never heard of a phone locking you out when you know the pattern. The only cause I have heard is some android viruses can do this.

The phone was on WhatsApp, in that moment it freezes and was like that for about a minute, then I decided to reboot it, I was reading about a similar case on Lenovo forums that pattern just stop working, I was able to use the fingerprint but when the startup is locked I can only use pattern, pass out PIN... Anyways I'll try a factory reset and pray to God to see if there is a backup of all my data.
Is frustrating because viruses can't be the problem, I don't use the phone to explore the web or download things, just the classic, WhatsApp, maps, Facebook etc.

That's because of encryption, if twrp is installed wipe data, again reboot to recovery and wipe data, this will remove encryption

[Q] Pattern lock after 4.2 update??

Hello,
So, I've updated to Cyanogenmod 10.1 (4.2) and everything went smoothly, except, I had a 4x4 or 5x5 (can't remember) before updating, and now after the update it shows me a 3x3 pattern that I can't unlock!!!
So what can I do now? Is there a way to bypass the lock screen? or maybe I can downgrade to 4.1 again? I didn't make a backup, and I don't want to lose all of my data ...
Any help is appreciated

This also happened to me, You will have to boot back into Recovery. Do a Factory Reset, which is annoying because you will lose all your data on your phone, but it will fix the problem

You should've done one before flashing anyway.
Alternative Way to Log-in
I know this thread is a bit old, but you can also simply put in the wrong password about 5 times until you are locked out of your phone, and then click the forgot pattern? button in the bottom-right corner.
Then make sure you reset the pattern to one that is 3x3.
You are suppose to factory reset even if you have no lock screen................
I other words you need to erase everything?

Stuck at lockscreen (pattern not recognised)

Three days in with a replacement Pixel C, it has stopped recognising my lockscreen pattern. I know it is correct as I use the same pattern on my phone. Wiping the cache has no effect.
I can't use Android Device Manager to set a new password as it detects that the lock screen is already active.
Is there any option other than a factory reset?

In this case, even a factory reset might not help.
Just to confirm, should anyone else have the same issue, a factory reset did solve the problem and the error has not returned. Still no idea what could have caused it though.
Solution
I had this problem also just hold the power button down for like a minute.
I'm having the same problem, was working fine a few hours ago then not recognizing the pattern. I've tried holding the power button but that just powers it off. When I turn it back on it asks for my pattern to power the device back on and it recognizes the pattern then just fine but once it power's up and I try to put the same pattern in to unlock the screen it says wrong pattern!! What the hell is going on here? Any help please?
This happened to me and Google RMA'd the unit. I had to factory reset it, but if you want to retain the data on it I strongly recommend installing something along the lines of Airdroid so that you can access the file hierarchy remotely even if the device is locked.
Airdroid has its benefits in other areas, however I found it a lifesaver for that one incident which allowed me to pull my files prior to the factory reset.

Thanks I'll have to check into that app. I already did a factory reset this time and it worked but I'm just curious what caused it and if I should just not use a screen lock on it anymore? So when you say you RMA'd the unit you mean Google swapped the unit out for another one? Or they recommended you to do a factory reset? Thanks again for the advice.

Yes, Google sent me a new unit. They didn't advise to do a factory reset, they just advised to return the unit. Part of their RMA process is that they recommend you wipe data (for data protection) so I ended up doing both.
I imagine that there are other apps which would offer access to your device data without unlocking, I just have experience with Airdroid.
I also had this problem, but I was using a pin instead of a pattern. Very concerning to be locked out of your own tablet. Had the tablet for about 3 months before it happened. Factory reset fixed it, hasn't returned since but only time will tell. Doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in the device knowing that maybe you could get locked out at any moment.
The same problem has been found on the Nexus 6p. Lockscreen not unlocking with the correct pin/password, appears to be a problem with the lockscreen as the phone can be booted or decrypted with the correct password.
The suggested fix was to ensure you have prey or another similar program installed. Changing your unlock password remotly via prey fixes the problem allowing you access to your phone.
Just had this problem today. Went to login with the same pattern I've been using for the past 3+ months, and it said "Wrong Pattern" over & over again. I tried to reboot and try again, same story. I used Android Device Manager to lock it & entered a password. Then my Pixel C confirmed that it was locked via the Android Device Manager, but when I went to log in, it asked me for a pattern, not a password! (Bad sign!) And, of course, I entered the right pattern and it told me it was the wrong pattern.
The Google support rep said I had to do a factory data reset. It is indeed disconcerting and frustrating. Next time I'll use Backup!
are you guys rooted? I had this problem on my N5X during rooting and trying to install ROMs. wiping data helped but I simply reset the device anyway. I noticed this also happened on some devices when an incompatible version of SuperSU was installed. If not rooted then you got me.
I am not rooted. I haven't done anything to the tablet except install & use apps and install a p12 certificate (which, I believe, unfortunately, requires you to use some kind of lock screen).
So, I used Android Device Manager to erase my tablet & the problem went away. Yay! I changed to using a PIN instead of a pattern. Now, today, just over a week later, the problem has recurred. <sob!> It says "Wrong PIN" when I try to login, even after powering off & on again, and I am facing the prospect of having to go through all that again.
Just had the same issue, tablet not rooted no developer options unlocked/used just left as factory with apps installed from play store.
Factory reset in progress...
Just happened to me (on the official beta ROM)
This just happened to me today on my Pixel C. I found threads on Google Forums that this has been happening for over a year without a fix.
If your bootloader is unlocked, you can always boot TWRP, Advanced > File Explorer, change to /data/system and delete locksettings.db, locksettings.db-wal and locksettings.db-shm.
Does anybody has an idea here? I'm confronted with this issue: Wrong PIN. No matter how many times i give the correct PIN
restarting Pixel C does not help. Is there any other way to fix this issue?

Actually: did Google forget your PIN? As far as I am concerned: Google still knows your PIN. It's you that doesn't.

Looks you have no clue what you're talking about. Do some more reading before you give a useless comment.
This is an issue with Pixel C since 2016, Google still hasn't fixed it.

Problem with Z2 Force Calls

Well, when i try to make or receive a call the phone not response, the phone take H+ as signal in that moment, but the signal drops.
When I try to call does not even get to dial, just runs out of tone and hangs after 30 seconds,
This started shortly after trying to customize my cellualr with andromeda when I modified the layers, my cell phone was reset every 5 minutes until it reached a bootloop from which it came out only forcing off with vol - and power button.
I remove the layers, uninstall andromeda and I stop having that problem, but a few days later I realized that I could no longer link calls. I'm almost sure that caused it
Today just as I got up I was determined to do the formatting process
i Installed the global version of android 8.0 which is what I had previously.
I set the phone and surprise, I could link call, I proceeded to turn it off to put twrp and magisk since I am very fan of having my system completely modified.
The second surprise of the day comes when installing TWRP told me the post that I had to give in format data, so that my data was not encrypted.
This caused my system to be deleted and when I installed Magisk and rebooted for obvious reasons, I was sent to bootloop.
I reloaded the system and it does not let me link calls again.
I really surrendered to this situation, I did the process of fasboot with the system a couple of times more to see if it worked like the first time, but I still have the problem.
The cell pohne is released from the company and is from Telcel Mexico.
It is in its compilation free of company with android 8.0, I have no problem with loss of imei or base band. I have all the services of my sim least calls.
mobile data 4G lte, I can receive and send messages, only calls I have this case, the motorola support team as always a few potatoes, that's why I come here where there are people with more knowledge to see if someone has an answer to my problem
Sorry if i dont write well in english but it isnt my 1st language
If you have the firmware for your phone, you should do a clean install, then factory reset after the install. Boot it, do a quick setup, don't set any lock screen security until after you have flashed twrp and rooted.

No, not like that. Do you have a complete flashall? If you have a complete firmware for your phone with a flashall, use it to go to a clean stock setup, not a hybrid mix and match.

Forgot my lock screen pattern. Can only try once every 30 minutes now. Please help.

Is there a way to circumvent or remove the lock screen pattern on an Android One phone? Mi A2 Lite running the January security updates, stock ROM, stock boot loader.
My brain monkey threw a wrench and for the life of me I can't figure out which pattern worked on my phone. I Have tried many combinations and reached a point where I am down to 30 minute lock out between attempts.
Is there any way to bypass this? I have a year's worth of data in my phone from a loved one that I don't want to lose. :crying:
I know that factory reset resolves the issue, but I don't want to lose the data. Any help would be appreciated.

Question How can I recover data from device stuck on starting page?(PE+ ROM)

Recently I dirty flashed PE+ ROM into my moto g40 fusion in a hurry without looking at the developer instructions(which clearly says I should clean flash). So ,now my phone is stuck on starting screen with a faded Google logo.I did not even take any backup(Silly Me)!
But somehow I am able to turn on flashlight by long pressing lock button(It was previously set ). I even hear alarms. I think That means phone is awake but for some reason the display is just a grey Google logo
How to fix this?What should I do?‍
I think performing a factory reset might boot the device. But Can I somehow recover the data?
@arsradu Can you please help me out?

Hello,
I don't have the phone anymore. So this is general info.
For as far as I know, you can't recover the data. However, Google does automatical backups at regular intervals, if you let it. So...chances are you might already have a backup. You could try to use it after factory resetting your phone.
Something else you could try...is flashing back the older version you had on top of this one. Maybe it will let you boot into it successfully so you can get access to your data. After that, I would suggest taking a backup, if you don't have one already.
And if you want the newer version again, make sure you follow the instructions given by the developer and see if that works.
I'm not aware of any other way.
Yeah, it could be that the phone is alive, but...if you can't interact with it...it doesn't help.
Thank you arsradu for replying..

I knew you don't have the phone anymore.I read that in the conversations. But I was kinda desperate. So, Sorry that I bothered you.
I hadn't allowed Google to backup my data except for photos and videos.
Flashing the older version of the rom on top of it was the first thing I tried,But the PE Recovery said the data was corrupted , didn't let me to boot into it and it wanted me to factory reset ‍. So in the hope of keeping the data I reflashed the same rom.
But, the exact same advice from you today gave me an idea.I know the data is intact in the device, If I somehow can backup this ,I might restore it in a clean flashed rom!
So I went through other XDA threads, watched some YouTube videos.
Then I boot it into twrp(again, thanks to your tutorial) took a backup of only data, wiped everything, flashed the previous version and restored the backup. And now I am writing from my own device🥹🥹.
But the problem is partially solved.I lost some important files from internal storage (as expected) .When I tap, I cannot open important settings options like individual app info, developer options, restore and backup etc .I can't swipe down the quick settings menu. When I try to toggle night light the display is just getting dark altogether.

Glad you managed to find a way! Good job!
My suggestion would be to make a backup, while you still can, and do a clean installation of the rom.
